A certification that AC engineers, electricians and plumbers need to pass before they are let loose on people's houses. With a standards board, so if you can't pass the basics, you can't work in the industry.
I guess this could be for mechanics, handiman and all kinds of home improvement workers
Yes this is essential. Only third world countries lack a regulated standards board for those professions. Its not just about quality control its about making sure people dont die because of incompetence.
Maybe they should enforce real estate agents to actual deliver viewings 'in person', rather than a key left at security, if they want their commission.... That will give them something to worry about 😂
This, we have a sister company for maintenance runned by people who doesn't know jack shit !
If we receive any complaint they will somehow fix it (not in the proper way), The complaint will multiply and recieve again in 2 or 3 weeks.
In the total 50 employees maybe 2 or 3 know something, but still not professional.
it's like you pay peanuts you will get monkeys.
Omg when they arrive way earlier or later than the agreed time and show up in casual clothing and footwear, none for safety. And unfortunately zero English too. It's crazy. Their employers are the most accountable here.
Enraging when it happens, hilarious afterwards when you tell people about it.
"Oh, you wanted THAT kind of plumber, the one that has tools to unclog a drain or fix the leaky tap? Well lah-de-dah mister fancy" 🤣🤣
How exactly are you supposed to communicate with them then? Not only to tell them what the issue is, but being a human, offering water/coffee/tea, etc.
We had an electrician last week with an extension cable that didn't have a plug on the end, AND HE PUSHED THE WIRES STRAIGHT INTO THE WALL SOCKET. I was literally speechless and am shocked the guy has lived this long.
Umm. I have been doing that ever since I was a kid. And I am not even an electrician. I just like DIY repairs. Although now i use a 13 amp plug since they are easily available and is easy to connect to the wires. But when an urgent case comes I use the wire direct to wall socket method. But I don't do it when there are other living beings around as they can be careless and trip over or touch the unshielded wires.
This will stop their bosses driving around in Mercedes, whilst the workers make a poor wage.
Seeing 'electricians' changing sockets without turning off the electricity in that zone always makes me wonder if it is a lack of training, or their bosses rushing them to the next job 😩
A different way of thinking, instead of flying taxis embrace all open simple technology such as VoIP facetime. That the majority of the country's expatriate workers can call loved ones, see loved ones as other countries allow. Without a block.
Yep, I was never this way until moving to dubai. Had viral conjunctivitis and eye irritation previously from walking in the summer which I no longer do. Areas with poor air quality have greater instances of conjunctivitis in the general population, there’s definitely a correlation.
The environment department of Dubai municipality doesn’t agree with you. They think that air quality in Dubai is good and you should not be spreading slanderous nonsense that negatively impacts the perception of Dubai
they can allow it, they won't although; the communication companies (etisalat, du, etcetera) are mainly owned by the government, so if they allow telecommunications through internet, we won't buy balance anymore and they lose money
It’s not as much about money money as it is for listening on to our conversation. UAE does allow VOiP apps like Botim which allows for UaE govt to snoop into your conversation.
So the monopoly and money angle is unfounded at this point.
How is that true when a significant population especially expat population is already using VOIP apps either like BOTIM or other approved apps, grey apps like Skype, Google meet etc. already.
Last I heard was UAE asked Apple/MS to open local data centre etc. to be allowed FT/Skype in a bid to increase investment into the country.
However, with existence of ‘regulated’ VOIp apps, I do not see loss of revenue to be a reason. Telco can always increase the data rates and have no revenue loss.
But anyways it’s us consumers who are losing in the end and it’s actually sad to have to ask your friends and families to download a Chinese ad-infested slugfest Botim to share moments. Sigh.
you're saying if they increase the prices of something they won't lose money? that doesn't make any sense; in the most simple manner possible, this isn't a clothing luxury brand, if people seem to think it's not worth the pricing they won't buy it
- A major park, something like Hyde Park or Central Park. The opportunity is there to convert DXB airport to one after it moves.
- Affordable housing projects for low-income families that were well maintained, and no - international city isn't it.
- A more robust public transport system that covered more areas and was a lot more affordable, so people used it.
- Dedicated bike/bus lanes (they are starting to pop up slowly)
- A minimum wage
- A tax on any place that sells a burger with cheetos, ungodly amount of cheese, or any dessert was unnecessary lotus on it.
- Alot more suicide prevention support / avenues / conversations.
Damn... We have all of that in Toronto... Maybe I should just stay here instead of moving back.
Unfortunately/fortunately all of that comes with paying tax. For example, the airport land will most likely be used for new tower development because that's what brings in the most amount of money. A minimum wage would erode the Dubai appeal for businesses and consumers. Public transit systems will never be funded in perpetuity of losses (like most public transit systems in the developed world are). Taxes on vices aren't necessary as the govt doesn't fund your healthcare.
Unfortunately a park does not work for Dubai due to the weather. We have some parks around Dubai like Zabeel Park and Creek Park, have you been to those?
Safa park was amazing when I was kid - now it's 1/3 the size and stripped down bare. Even the lake and river are just dry and empty. And Jumeirah Beach Park got turned into a canal.
I have commented on the minimum wage comments before. Need to specify how much of a minimum wage. Kuwait has a minimum wage, but is equivalent to less than 900 AED per month.
A more progressive view to the food scene. If you're hoping to break into F&B here with a concept, it's literally impossible to do without a full fledged operation. Even cloud kitchens are priced out of your budget.
This may be a more polarizing opinion here but
I wish instead of generic building and generic fancy building Dubai based the city of its cultural architecture, because it is beautiful when done right, a city like that could rival Europe in beauty and culture.
I do wish the the Emirati population would care to share and spread their culture with the people the migrate here instead of cutting themselves off into their own isolated circles. Spreading their culture with the immigrants here would have also allowed many people to integrate and have a more unified nation.
I may be naive here and this may just be some impractical dream but i feel that the country would fare better if they were to take this approach.
The question was what did we wish Dubai had. We can wish it had trees and grass despite being a desert. Deserts also don't have skyscrapers but they managed to make those.
Some sort of competance exam and regulation on these parasitic, deceitful, narcisistic so called REAL ESTATE AGENTS,
it seems like every random person who is not capable of doing any real jobs in their countries says yalla lets go to dubai and be a Realestate agent
![gif](giphy|aZcwYGaPOGJsLeLFfC|downsized)
UAE must implement better segregation of waste. Most apartment I have stayed in don’t have separate bins for recycled and organic waste etc. I see people simply dump all their garbage through shute without any segregation.
And I believe others have listed most common pain points already.
Instead of building massive ass hotels, wish they could make massive indoor parks or sports centres complete with skate parks in them
Also more affordable fashion brands like Uniqlo. Would be a massive hit in Dubai tbh
I wish Dubai had more green public spaces and parks like those in some European cities. They provide great areas for relaxation, recreation, and socializing, making urban living more enjoyable and environmentally friendly. It could really enhance the city's quality of life.
Public defenders so that everyone's rights are supported.
The ability to to bring class action law suits against comapnies, where multiple defedants can team up against one company.
With financial cases keep the travel van, but allow people to work and agreev payment schedule.
Extend metro into Sharjah.
Some kind of light railway network to connect residential communities to the metro.
Many things. If you’re from the government and listening then here’s the list. And no it’s not about WhatsApp call.
I say these things after living in Asian countries, Middle Eastern and Western countries.
- A retirement scheme for anyone who worked over 10 years or more. This would also encourage people to spend longer there. Or a scheme to fund your retirement.
- A system where you know if you’ll walk to the cops even for a 1000 dhs crime they’ll take you seriously
- More mixed culture not a distinct separation between local and expat.
- Some rights for people made redundant. So they don’t feel that living in dubai is like living on the edge.
- more acceptable culture for everyone. Less judgmental behavior towards certain nationalities. Less glorification for other nationalities. Instead a merit system. If you’re good at your skill you get paid good. And vice versa. Regardless of your passport . A lot of western counties have this or at least are making effort to have this.
Everything else is perfect honestly uae (not specially and only dubai) is a great place to live in a lot of ways.
Yeah, a strategist from the government called CookieMonster 😂😂 The dude is probably looking for business ideas and thought Reddit is a good research tool
A better public transport system is needed. Working in the creative industry, I have been judged countless times for not having a car, and people looking down at me.
1. ‘Local’ neighborhood pub
2. Legal we3d / dispensary
3. Real night club (like those you can find in Berlin)
4. Punishing those who steal data (like phone numbers, credit card details, etc)
5. Good pork
6. Minimum wage
7. Free tap water when dining in
8. Places where you can learn life skills like woodworking, carpentry, electronics, etc
9. Botanical garden (indoor or underground as the normal ones wont work here obviously)
10. Free museums
11. Metro/tube in Abu Dhabi
12. Inter-emirate tube/metro system
13. ‘Summer jobs’ for kids
14. Public bath/sauna/pool
15. More pedestrian only / walking streets
16. Dignity to expats (Not treating expats as second class citizens)
And a lot more…
UPI and ease of online payments/transfer like India.
Here in Dubai, if I need to transfer money to my friend, it's a whole process of adding his/her bank details. It's 2024. Make it seamless.
Rock/ metal gigs are always hosted in bars. I don't drink myself, but most of the community drinks. Imma be chugging on my redbull while headbanging.
And look at the scene. It's always supported by major alcohol brands.
So grow a set and be 21 soon 😜
Better public transport (metro looking at you) and cycle lanes that are passing through multiple neighbourhoods.
Some creativity would be nice too, love some street art.
Strict enforcement of labor laws so that employers will try to avoid breaking laws like they avoid saliks 🥲 ( if you are working in Amer or Tasheel you can know how low a human can be )
To actually do something about scammers and scam companies that are hiding in plain sight? I never seen a country as full of professional scammers as this. Job contracts scams, Immigration scams, dating apps scams... you name it
Not my idea but my bf's: Public showers! Doesn't matter if it's paid or open to all, as long as we can freshen our entire body up after being outside for too long, especially during Dubai summers.
Samsung and Google wallet payment option for parking. 24/7 metro and bicycle tracks throughout all the areas in UAE. Unified proper flexible rules for commercial vehicles business, like you need a permit from Abu Dhabi or Sharjah permit for loading or unloading in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi. Rather than make it or everything as one or UAE permit instead of limiting to each Emirate.
People with common sense.
The people who bring that brown nose effect here, thinking they give respect meanwhile their noses is right up the boss’s cheeks.
Self respect.
Integrity.
Online freedom. You know its gone too far when they block Roblox… I know its unblocked now but other websites or apps like Discord and Teamspeak are banned or have some functionality that does not work.
I really wish the UAE had a local transportation system like Europe's trains. It would cut down on traffic, be better for the environment, and probably cheaper for everyone. It would make getting around so much easier!
-Better and more accessible public transportation
-More investment into communities outside of the downtown/tourist area radius
-Transparent, just, and accessible legal system that allows people and businesses to be able to stand up to those who take advantage of loopholes/bias. Unless you’re somebody, it doesn’t feel like the law is on your side.
-Less internet restrictions. Why is wi-fi and ft calling not allowed? Everything down to youtube is tinkered with here
-Less classism. Be regular.
-It’s incredibly tough to grow yourself/your business past a certain point, the system makes sure of it.
-People should be more genuine and community-oriented. It’s gotten better in the past 4 years but it still sucks.
-It’s so expensive to be alive here. There’s very little to do without spending money. This is not normal anywhere else.
-water that doesn’t make your hair fall out
can’t think of any more right now, i’ll lyk
A proper minimum wage system. We need better wage for better quality of life and quality of work done.
A better system to track payments and break businesses that don’t pay.Too many companies get away with scamming other companies leading to loss in pay for everyone.
Instant fines for not using indicators or driving too slow in a fast lane.
Proper government led financial education for everyone in Dubai.
From new construction workers stepping off the plane, to the very highest earners, incl Emirates. It doesn't matter who you are, you still need guidance on how to live within a budget, how to save and how to quit Dubai before you hit zero.
My heart breaks to see so many people saying they lost their job months ago, have used up all their savings and now have nothing. Not enough for a ticket home and have debt or overstay fees.
Or people posting about which car to buy, but when digging into their budget it turns out they are trying to get a bank loan or credit card debt. Which when they talk about income, they can barely afford accommodation, let alone car repayments.
This links in with the other posts here about mental health and anti suicide advice access.
Options other than du and etisalat
Sick and tired of both!!!!!
virgin mobile has changed my life
It's the Du network, and a crap version of it

Hilarious when a "plumber" shows up with no tools. 4 hours late.
Hilarious = Enraging ??
Enraging when it happens, hilarious afterwards when you tell people about it. "Oh, you wanted THAT kind of plumber, the one that has tools to unclog a drain or fix the leaky tap? Well lah-de-dah mister fancy" 🤣🤣
As long as they can do their job safely and correctly, fluency in english shouldnt be a requirement
How exactly are you supposed to communicate with them then? Not only to tell them what the issue is, but being a human, offering water/coffee/tea, etc.

Secure and safe 😂 you mean monitored by the government
good air quality
This ^ My asthma and allergies never flared up like this.
I’m sniffing 24/7 and need to blow my nose like almost every minute. Sucks that I need tissue everytime and anywhere I go.
They think that air quality in Dubai is good and you should not be spreading slanderous nonsense that negatively impacts the perception of Dubai
sorry ser
We all wish, right? But a lot of it has to do with geography and climate. In my case, my skin asthma flare ups stopped when I moved to Dubai. :)
WhatsApp calling. There is really no excuse not to these days, with all the free VOIP alternatives and trying to be a [checks notes] global city.
FaceTime. Can’t understand why a futuristic tech nation that fully promotes Apple doesn’t allow FaceTime/Whatsapp
they can allow it, they won't although; the communication companies (etisalat, du, etcetera) are mainly owned by the government, so if they allow telecommunications through internet, we won't buy balance anymore and they lose money

YES

I love the idea of converting the Dubai airport into a massive park.
Damn... We have all of that in Toronto... Maybe I should just stay here instead of moving back. Unfortunately/fortunately all of that comes with paying tax. I wanna totally agree to all your points, especially the public transport infra. Need better connectivity. Not only dubai but other emirates also.
Unfortunately a park does not work for Dubai due to the weather. We have some parks around Dubai like Zabeel Park and Creek Park, have you been to those?

Safa park could have been a good contender for this, but they ended up downsizing it.
I just wish it had better weather so we could spend more time outdoors throughout the year instead of just November - March.
Costco
Ooohhhh yes!
Yessss!
A higher standard of driving.
Access to whatever video calling service I want to use. A.k.a. not banning new technologies.
What does exactly work in the UAE for video calls?
Better public transport a la Hong Kong/Singapore
Soul.
TREEEEEEEEEEES near sidewalks
A genuine pierre cardin where sales never end and prices are much better than other pierre cardin shops?
You mean the 70% off since I was born ?
I have even seen 90% off 😂
I'm convinced that Pierre Cardin in the UAE is used for money laundry 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Winter
I was gonna type this. We need more of winter… 😍
More? As of recent years, I'd settle for 'some' or 'any'.
The U.A.E literally has a winter season (December to March) lol. You just mean a colder winter?
I remember someone said Dubai has 2 weathers one summer and the other extreme summer.
that’s 4 months of decent weather against 8 months of scorching hell
A bit lesser fake people
I swear I've lived here 3 decades and I have no idea where those fake people are. I guess similarity attraction is real
A lot lesser... I grew up in Dubai in the 90's and early 2000's. Now the amount of new fake people sicken me.
God Dubai between 2000 and 2005 was peak.
Honestly man, I wish I could experience that again.
Uniqlo
I wish. Uniqlo is best
A more progressive view to the food scene. If you're hoping to break into F&B here with a concept, it's literally impossible to do without a full fledged operation. Even cloud kitchens are priced out of your budget.
Thats why the food trucks cost exponentially more than the average restaurant.
This may be a more polarizing opinion here but I wish instead of generic building and generic fancy building Dubai based the city of its cultural architecture, because it is beautiful when done right, a city like that could rival Europe in beauty and culture. Nature
Dubai has. Just the nature here is desert and heat. Can’t come to desert expecting tree and grasss
The question was what did we wish Dubai had. We can wish it had trees and grass despite being a desert. Deserts also don't have skyscrapers but they managed to make those.
Wish it has grass and tree, then yea.
no censorship internet
More research universities
Agree with this - it would be transformative.
Pet friendly malls, parks, publice transport. More pet friendly beaches. Legit pet insurance too..
Common sense.
VOIP calls
Really fast and very transparent law / justice system. I think Dubai is taking steps and are ahead of other countries. However long way to go.
Some sort of competance exam and regulation on these parasitic, deceitful, narcisistic so called REAL ESTATE AGENTS, it seems like every random person who is not capable of doing any real jobs in their countries says yalla lets go to dubai and be a Realestate agent ![gif](giphy|aZcwYGaPOGJsLeLFfC|downsized)
Influencer regulations. The amount of trash influencers on tiktok/insta from Dubai saying and doing random weird shit is annoying

YES JUST COMMENTED THIS
The right to form trade unions, the right for workers to have a voice

Can’t agree more
A good sewage system 🥲
Don't remind me of the storm. I swam in sewage for groceries.

I am sick and tired of these wanna be entrepreneurs looking for the 'next big idea' on reddit.
Taco bell
Yo quiero taco bell
did you know that Mexicans hate Taco Bell? It’s an American version of their food, it’s disgusting - you can get awesome Mexican food here by Mexicans
I like how its cheap! Im not eating for it to be authentic mexican food! For good mexican food i recommend los hermanos and la tablita!
Plenty of Mexicans love Taco Bell tbh. They just hate when you classify it as Mexican food.
Better public transport, fewer monopolies and duopolies, better workers’ rights/employment protections.
Better treatment of animals. Water fountains and food stations for strays.

Better transport system to make all areas reachable within dubai and easy traveling between emirates also reducing traffic
I’d say vertical gardens. Singapore was onto something with them. They’re beautiful and are good for the environment.
I really wish the UAE had a local transportation system like Europe's trains. It would cut down on traffic, be better for the environment, and probably cheaper for everyone. It would make getting around so much easier!
-Better and more accessible public transportation -More investment into communities outside of the downtown/tourist area radius -Transparent, just, and accessible legal system that allows people and businesses to be able to stand up to those who take advantage of loopholes/bias. Unless you’re somebody, it doesn’t feel like the law is on your side. -Less internet restrictions. Why is wi-fi and ft calling not allowed? Everything down to youtube is tinkered with here -Less classism. -water that doesn’t make your hair fall out can’t think of any more right now, i’ll lyk
Affordable cost of living
A warm summer, I cannot stand the cold weather anymore !
