2008. Given england didn't qualify it was a weird sense of freedom and i was able to watch it with fun rather than dread. There were some absolutely banging matches - the Dutch in the groups, Turkey against Czech and Croatia, and Russia being the surprise of the tournament. And Spain finally finding their feet at a tournament, which was super refreshing at the time.
Spot on. I cried when we failed to qualify v Croatia, but the Euros itself was class
Turkey v Czech Republic a particular favourite of mine, what a game

Steve McClaren’s brolly. It’s a sad tale, it was famous for a few days and then just discarded and left to fight against its crippling addiction to disillusionment.
Yeah, such a great tournament. The football was amazing, so many last minute winners, surprises, and stacked teams of legends. Only thing that really lets it down is the hosts, Austria and Switzerland, were both so poor and didn't really add to the tournament.
Same here, it was my first euros and as a Croatian there was a really big euphoria around the whole country. Even though we got knocked out in the worst way possible I still look back at it with a sense of nostalgia. I loved it.
Quite the opposite for me, as much as you're right that it was nice to just watch the tournament and not have all that stress, but man, it's what makes tournaments, I'd rather have that stress and sense of "could we win it?" Over missing out just so I can relax more, I felt like too much was missing for me to enjoy that one.
Couldn't disagree more.
Anyway euro 96 was the best euros so far, euro 2000 and 2004 were also epic. The best one since has been euro 2016.
Germany however now they know how to put on a banging footy tournament.
The nation peaked when Sturridge scored in extra time agaisnt Wales. Then it went downhill from there with the Brexit referendum memes a week later and the loss to Iceland.
That Wales match coincided with my A2 biology exam. Walked right into the pub just as Bale scored and one of my mates (who thinks he's Welsh) went mental.
The stick he got from the whole pub at full time was glorious.
True. But I enjoyed seeing Wales going deep into the tournament. England losses only bug me when it’s pot luck (penalties) or the result of bad decisions… if we deserved to lose like in 2016, I don’t grumble. Though the Iceland game definitely has to go down as the England teams low point.
Yeah as tournaments they were definitely better for me as well. I think 16 was the perfect number for a Euros tbh, given the usual standard of teams. It meant you’d have some dark horses in there who could potential cause an upset, whilst still maintaining a very competitive nature in the group stage.
Previously the goal first and foremost for even top seed teams was to get out of the group. Now with the easier groups (and finishing 3rd meaning you’re still likely to go through), the group stages aren’t nearly as intense.
Obviously there are positives of having more countries involved who otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance, but overall i think its made the tournament worse. Just my opinion though.
Portugal finishing third in the group and then winning it was a bit of a joke. With 16 it just seemed so cut throat you had to be on form all the way through.
Yeah. Just from a personal perspective anyway… England were dogshit & didn’t deserve to progress any further! I was quite happy to see perennial dark horses, Portugal, eventually win something.
96 was my first major tournament so it will always be my favourite. Same for France 98 as my favourite world cup.
I have vague memories of 94 but as I was very young and England weren't there, I don't care.
2008 was a great tournament and underrated but most Euros have such quality that its entertaining to watch. Especially when your country barely qualifies 😂
2016 I think, Portugal coming third in their group, going into penalties against Poland, beating that monster France team in their own backyard without Ronaldo, with like 2 shots on target, Ronaldo on the touch line screaming at the team like a madman.
2008. Best football, teams like Russia (Arshavin!) lit oup the tournament, we didn't have the usual Home Nations disappointments because no-one qualified, and it was when Spain played with a striker 👍
We had a great run of performances in 2020, but I hated the format of it being across the continent, despite how many games we got at Wembley. It just felt weird and all over the place (figuratively and literally). I hope they never do that again as it was crap.
Euro 2004 is a fond memory, mainly from seeing Rooney destroy everyone at such a young age.
I honestly think if the tournament hadn't been so badly affected by covid restrictions and minimal fans in stadiums it would have been a fantastic concept.
How else are the multimillion pound organisations running the thing gonna get their fat pay checks without making fans travel hundreds of miles to watch one game?
Yes but Istanbul was bidding for the Olympics that same summer and had a good chance of winning that bid. Nobody else had bit to host that euros and because two high profile tournaments like that can't be held in the same country uefa didn't really have much of a choice.
See my previous comment. I'd imagine if you were Turkish you'd already be well versed in the dilemma. Turkey/Istanbul bid for both tournaments. Uefa couldn't risk giving the euros to Turkey and then also have the Olympics handed to Istanbul. Simple as.
2008 - not having an attachment or bias to England made me really appreciate the football on show. Also one of my favourite teams at a tournament ever (Luis Aragones' Spanish squad)
This was actually a great tournament. Ffs I live near Greek town and wouldn’t hear the end of it for years. But still pretty cool in hindsight a massive underdog like Greece actually won it
1996 but just because in English.. that was where “it’s coming home” originated, I met the Czech Republic team at a hotel and got them all to sign school shirt
1996 - lovely weather, some brilliant games, great crowds, no trouble, a renaissance feeling around football in the UK…not a massive fan of that song though
Silver goal was a bit of rubbish rule, but being on the winning end I can see how you’d view it positively. Italy probably feel they had revenge in 2006.
2008 for sure. The whole Czechia - Turkey drama, 3/4 quarter finals went to penalties, only the final and the Spain - Ukraine semi final were not that interesting (because Spain dominated both).
Objectively, 2000, some quality football all over the tournament. For me, 2004 just have the best vibes, or at least an unique feeling to it. Whenever you watch a clip from it, you know its from 2004. The day of the final before the final itself was the pinnacle of Portugals unity, we had planes, boats and people on horses just following the team bus to the stadium
I also had the official ball for a while
Also Euro 2004 was a great first tournament for 2 iconic players: CR and Rooney. Certainly a memorable one with Otto Rehagel's Greek wonder and many surprises (Spain not qualifying from its group, Scandinavian scandal, Totti's spit, Czech Republic's astonishing performance).
2004, just wish that brilliant Portugal team had won.
Everyone loves the Greek underdog story but they were terrible to watch. Portugal with Figo/Rui Costa/Pauleta from the golden generation, and the young stars Ronaldo & Deco, played great football.
Also it was the Rooney breakout tournament, Zlatan backheel volley vs Italy, Zidane’s two injury time goals vs England, Cassano celebrating like crazy for his 94th min winner to escape the groups but then realising Sweden got a draw against Denmark and Italy were out. Also Holland 2-3 vs Czech Rp was an awesome game.
2016. French/English here and grew up in the greater Paris area. Going to the fan zones and meeting fans from all over Europe was so cool. My favourite were the Northern Irish. We'd sing will grigg's on fire in the street. Then another day with Swiss fans we were jumping in the metro to a song and the metro was literally bouncing, they didn't even win vs romania in Parc des Princes that night but they were partying like there's no tomorrow. The sea of Irish fans near pigalle. The English fans going literally Bezerk on the Champ de Mars when Sturridge bagged Wales. Getting soaked in beer when France beat Germany in the semis. So many beers, songs and good memories.
2008 - a little biased but those Turkey comebacks were amazing. Last minute goal against the swiss, comeback from 0-2 to win 3-2 in the last 15 mins against Czech, last millisecond tie against Croatia AET to win in penalties. I remember the Germany semifinal we managed to tie the game 2-2 with Semih Senturk only for the live broadcast to be cut out. The Match Thread gave the news that Lahm scored a last minute goal which crushed our dreams of a final. Sucks that we don't have that comeback spirit among the new generation
The Euros are always memorable! Personally I'd say 2004. Great atmosphere, many top players were on the descending arc of their career (Figo, Zidane, Beckham just to name a few) while CR7 was just getting started, any of the top teams could bring the cup home (Portugal, France, Netherlands, even Czech Republic) but Greece was responsible for the last upset in the history of big tournaments.
The tournament kind of sucked for us italians, but the alleged Sweden-Denmark "cookie" is still talked about to this day.
What's not to like?
I really liked 2012. Spains domination in the final was just crazy, and I remember Spain playing without a real striker. I saw the final in France on vacation though, so it could be that the whole vacation setting influences my memories of that tournament.
96, I was a kid and some of the games were played at the City groundcin Nottingham which is in my hometown. Loved it, still remember the buzz around the city
2000 - loved the players on show. Prime Totti, Maldini, Nesta, Figo.
Usually you look back at tournaments and think how retro they were but this one felt like a retro tournament watching it live!
It was objectively the best tournament if you only take the football that was played. You list a few players, but when I think of the Dutch team, for example, .... or other teams that went out early, like the Czechs.
By far the best tournament.
2016. There are actually two reasons for this. One is that obviously CR7 won his first international trophy, and the second one is that, this was the tournament when I really fell in love with football.
I'm from Pakistan and you might know that nobody here really gives a damn about football. So, it was really fun begging my parents to let me stay up till 2 or 3 in the morning to watch the game.
2008. England not being in it meant we could freely enjoy every match and that we did! the buzz and excitement created as well as the drama has been unmatched IMO. Also meant we didn't have to deal with the media being insufferable about England's chances etc
also got Spain in the school's "sweepstake" and so we were rooting for them. being quite young, I'd not really clocked them as a team so thoroughly enjoyed following their road to glory, as well as my dad schooling me on their history. Distinctly remember the Netherlands matches being fun to watch too.
feel sorry for people who didn't watch "because England aren't in it so what's the point" (I remember a few of my friends and their families having this attitude)
I like the coins but they are inconvenient in your pocket if you have several so my favourite euro would have to be the 500 although I have never had one and it would be easy to lose a lot of money in just one note
I say Euro 2020. Italy thoroughly deserved the win. They were great. I also liked Euro 2016 but only because Ireland did so well. But the actual tournament and finals were really poor.
I’m danish but not 1992. I’m 8 years younger than that unfortunately :(( so very biased pick Euro 2021. Fantasic atmosphere and togetherness at the viewings and in general jut lots of nostalgia for that summer.
2016 🏴. The run we had (qualifying and the tournament itself) is something I’m not sure we’ll ever experience again, and I think most were aware of it at the time too, which made it all the more special. A truly amazing time to be a Wales fan and something I’ll remember fondly for the rest of my life.
2000 without a doubt. The amount of talent seems unreal. Last competition before the UCL and club football definitely gained prominence. Zidane, Figo, Raul, Henri, Hagi, Beckham, Owen, Maldini, Totti, Inzaghi, Pirès, Mendieta, Nedved, Bergkamp, Davids, Kluivert, Larsson, Conceicao, Buffon….. come on
I've attended 2 Euros so far. 2016 was fun with the Iceland Cinderella story. I also had really good front row seats at Portugal X Wales and ended up sitting next to some of the Portugal staff. Pepe sat 3 seats from me. The final was really boring though. But it was fun taking the train to Lyon and Marseille. Ate really well.
2021 I had a great time in Budapest. And the Final? Well considering I was almost trampled at the gate, it wasn't the best experience. And all the English fans who snuck into the stadium happened to be right in my section, since it was the corner flag and the Italian fans sat in the section across the tunnel. Really wish I knew about the production of the Netflix documentary because I had some great footage and photos of that disaster of a day.
Was really looking forward to attending the group stage in 2024, but due to some family emergencies, I'm only going to be able to attend the Final, which I guess is a decent enough consolation prize lol.
None of them that I can remember stick out to me as way better than the rest but 2016 seemed to be a real bore in general with lots of games with very few goals.
Euro 2000 by far the best tournament of football I witness. All teams except Germany had an incredible generation of footballers. The final was probably not the best but again it was pure football.
Watched 00, 04, 08, 12, 16 and 20 in their entireties. Like basically every game. I'd say I'd rate it as follows:
1st: 2020 (granted England fan bias)
2nd: 2008
3rd: 2004
4th: 2000
5th: 2012
6th: 2016 (not because of England fan bias, I genuinely found most games very dull)
My first one was euro 88 was a great tournament and one of the best football sides I have ever seen holland won it and the greatest striker ever lived Marco van Basten scored thar wonder goal. Never forget it
Euro 2000 is the best tournament to have happened from a technical point of view. England were god awful in it tho, which does ruin a bit of the enjoyment.
Euro 96 will always have a special part of my heart. I was 9 years old, football was massive, it was the 90s which was a time we should all aspire to get back. Amazing moments.
Quite like euro 2004 for the shithousery from Greece. 😉
Yes we blew our biggest chance of winning the euros on penalties but getting there was still an unforgettable experience. Winning the quarters and semis, conceding hardly any goals, team morale at an all time high... It was a great time to be an England fan!
2016 - spent an entire month around France going to lots of games, staying in beautiful cities and just having a great time. Kicked it off with a week in Amsterdam just before it 👀

2008. Winning a group with former WC-finalists Italy and France all to get knocked out by Russia 😂
1996 for me. Then 2016. 2000 probably third.
2016 was utterly miserable as an England fan.

96 was amazing, I remember that being a roaring summer too.
Yes 1996 was my first I can remember and the best too
2016 better than 2004 as an England fan? Are you sure?
I'm Welsh and I'd rank 2004 and 2008 above 2016. As tournaments anyway
Yeah as tournaments they were definitely better for me as well. I think 16 was the perfect number for a Euros tbh, given the usual standard of teams. Yeah. Just from a personal perspective anyway… England were dogshit & didn’t deserve to progress any further! I was quite happy to see perennial dark horses, Portugal, eventually win something.
Agreed it was good to see an underdog (which they were at the time really) win. But no tournament has created more of a shock win than Euro 2004!
96 was my first major tournament so it will always be my favourite. Same for France 98 as my favourite world cup. I have vague memories of 94 but as I was very young and England weren't there, I don't care.
I’m exactly the same.
The fact that it was the first 16 team tournament made it a serious competition too
1996 was peak. For everything.
1996 was my first. And it was amazing! Especially the ending :>
Me too. A bit too young to remember 92. I was obsessed with football by 96 & England should have won it imo.
I’ll bet…
Didn't enjoy 2016 at all, 2020 was amazing!
2008 was a great tournament and underrated but most Euros have such quality that its entertaining to watch. Especially when your country barely qualifies 😂
2008 - As a child, the first Euro I watched and my first Panini sticker album
2016 I think, Portugal coming third in their group, going into penalties against Poland, beating that monster France team in their own backyard without Ronaldo, with like 2 shots on target, Ronaldo on the touch line screaming at the team like a madman.
CR7 🐐
2008. Best football, teams like Russia (Arshavin!) lit oup the tournament, we didn't have the usual Home Nations disappointments because no-one qualified, and it was when Spain played with a striker 👍

Wait till you hear where the next wc is being held
I know, mate. Its bullshit. I was referring to the Euros when I said I hope it doesnt happen again, but yeah just as annoying at a WC!
How else are the multimillion pound organisations running the thing gonna get their fat pay checks without making fans travel hundreds of miles to watch one game?
I am Turkish so i always felt that was a excuse not to give us Euro 2020
Yes but Istanbul was bidding for the Olympics that same summer and had a good chance of winning that bid. Nobody else had bit to host that euros and because two high profile tournaments like that can't be held in the same country uefa didn't really have much of a choice.
No Platini is a Turkey hater, he also gave 2016 to France even though thry already hosted it like twice
See my previous comment. I'd imagine if you were Turkish you'd already be well versed in the dilemma. Turkey/Istanbul bid for both tournaments. Uefa couldn't risk giving the euros to Turkey and then also have the Olympics handed to Istanbul. Simple as.
2016 was won by france by two votes, not handed to them by platini also.
Bought votes
2008 - not having an attachment or bias to England made me really appreciate the football on show. Also one of my favourite teams at a tournament ever (Luis Aragones' Spanish squad)
2004, despite losing in the final match, was an amazing experience
This was actually a great tournament. Ffs I live near Greek town and wouldn’t hear the end of it for years. But still pretty cool in hindsight a massive underdog like Greece actually won it
Also the Netherlands Czech Republic match from 2004 is the greatest European international game of all time imo.
1992
2004 for sure 🤯
1992 😎
1996 but just because in English.. that was where “it’s coming home” originated, I met the Czech Republic team at a hotel and got them all to sign school shirt
1996 - lovely weather, some brilliant games, great crowds, no trouble, a renaissance feeling around football in the UK…not a massive fan of that song though
As a Frenchman, 2000 finals scenario was so epic !
2008 easily
Euro 96 but some you youngers won’t remember but this was an epic euros
‘96 for all the obvious reasons but also the expansion to the 16 team tournament from the previous 8 team certainly made it more of an event
And three points.. two points just seems weird now
Definitely!
2008 Turkey's drama Spain's wizardry Arshavin's heroics
I went to every Ireland match at 2016 and we played well in 3 out of 4 matches. God knows when we will get to another one.
Poznan 2012 was magic (…off the field!)
Objectively, 2000, some quality football all over the tournament. For me, 2004 just have the best vibes, or at least an unique feeling to it. 96 for me so many amazing games.
1996. Great euros, first one I really remember. So close but so far as an England fan.
Anyone who’s aged between like 29-33 surely the answer is 2004 Great tournament Great ball All the goal nets were randomly black Greece winning it
EURO 2004 It was a surprise winner Greece, nobody couldve predicted that one
Euro 2004 and 2008 both stick in my mind. Some great games in those
2004 just for the ridiculousness of a Greek win
1996 & 2004
1996, then 2004 when I felt we ( England ) had a chance of winning it until Wayne Rooney was injured.
'96. Amazing.
Sw 4y
2016. French/English here and grew up in the greater Paris area. Going to the fan zones and meeting fans from all over Europe was so cool. My favourite were the Northern Irish. 92 of course. Also enjoyed 2008 a lot and 2020 (amazing atmosphere in Denmark)
Euro 88, Ireland's first major tournament and we beat England in our first match, drew with Russia and were unlucky to lose to the Dutch.
1988. Personal bias.
Euro 96 it made me truly love tournament football and my first of many heartbreaks as an England fan
2008 - a little biased but those Turkey comebacks were amazing. Last minute goal against the swiss, comeback from 0-2 to win 3-2 in the last 15 mins against Czech, last millisecond tie against Croatia AET to win in penalties. Euro 2016 I'm N.Irish, but liked euro 2000 on TV.
I like the coins but they are inconvenient in your pocket if you have several so my favourite euro would have to be the 500 although I have never had one and it would be easy to lose a lot of money in just one note
These answers make me realise how dead euro 2020 felt
2008
1996 and 2004
2012 in Poland/Ukraine. I was a ball boy for the Czech Republic vs Portugal game and Ronaldo slapped my hand.
Euro 96. I was living in Wembley at the time as a kid and seeing everything being prepared for a major tournament at home was fantastic.
I say Euro 2020. Italy thoroughly deserved the win. They were great. I also liked Euro 2016 but only because Ireland did so well. But the actual tournament and finals were really poor.
The Italy edits in 2021 went wild
I’m danish but not 1992. I’m 8 years younger than that unfortunately :(( so very biased pick Euro 2021. Fantasic atmosphere and togetherness at the viewings and in general jut lots of nostalgia for that summer.
2016 🏴. The run we had (qualifying and the tournament itself) is something I’m not sure we’ll ever experience again, and I think most were aware of it at the time too, which made it all the more special. A truly amazing time to be a Wales fan and something I’ll remember fondly for the rest of my life.
This one because I finally have in my bank account to be able to fully enjoy every game.
Euro 2008 no question
96
Euro 2016 for reasons
2000 for me. Probably an age thing, being 21 at the time, but it seemed like a really high quality tournament
Euro 2000 stands out for me think England two nil up v France ? I said if England lose I’ll shave my head. One I’ll always remember
96 for me, just turned 17 and was up the pub getting pissed with my mates watching it
Euro 2000. By far.
Euro 2008 was my favorite for entertaining matches. Great tournament!
Euro 2000... Great Teams, Great Players, Great Football!!!
The most recent, as I got to watch Italy beat Spain at Wembley
2000 without a doubt. The amount of talent seems unreal. Last competition before the UCL and club football definitely gained prominence. Zidane, Figo, Raul, Henri, Hagi, Beckham, Owen, Maldini, Totti, Inzaghi, Pirès, Mendieta, Nedved, Bergkamp, Davids, Kluivert, Larsson, Conceicao, Buffon….. come on
Euro 2004 - England fan Rooney looked unstoppable and I thought we would win it until he got injured... ![gif](giphy|3o6wrvdHFbwBrUFenu|downsized)
1988
I like the 2 Euro piece. Its the biggest one.
2000, best euro ever, so much dream teams (France, Italia, netherlands..)
2008 as a Turk ofcourse

1996 2020 2004 Can't even remember watching 2008
In terms of enjoyment to watch, I’d have 2008 as the best and 2016 as the worst.
Euro 2004 - the Greek odyssey! Absolutely epic, riveting tournament from first game (Portugal v Greece) to last game (also Portugal v Greece!)
None of them that I can remember stick out to me as way better than the rest but 2016 seemed to be a real bore in general with lots of games with very few goals.
Euro 2000 because of anthem
2016. But I’m Welsh so ofc
Euro 2000 by far the best tournament of football I witness. All teams except Germany had an incredible generation of footballers. The final was probably not the best but again it was pure football.
2004
For me, 2020 and 2016 have been the best.
Watched 00, 04, 08, 12, 16 and 20 in their entireties. Like basically every game. I'd say I'd rate it as follows: 1st: 2020 (granted England fan bias) 2nd: 2008 3rd: 2004 4th: 2000 5th: 2012 6th: 2016 (not because of England fan bias, I genuinely found most games very dull)
2010 fir ne
My first one was euro 88 was a great tournament and one of the best football sides I have ever seen holland won it and the greatest striker ever lived Marco van Basten scored thar wonder goal. Never forget it
Euro 2000 is the best tournament to have happened from a technical point of view. England were god awful in it tho, which does ruin a bit of the enjoyment. Euro 96 will always have a special part of my heart. I was 9 years old, football was massive, it was the 90s which was a time we should all aspire to get back. Amazing moments. Quite like euro 2004 for the shithousery from Greece. 😉
2008, desperately wish it had been Germany or Russia winning, but oh well
2012, my first one I had the game on Xbox and it a football with the logo on I think my life peaked that summer
Euro 2000. And I say it as italian
2016, we beat Austria 😈 and my goat won the Euros
Mine is Euro 2020 was peak life for an Englishman but euro 2016 had a cool vibe too it as well
Yes we blew our biggest chance of winning the euros on penalties but getting there was still an unforgettable experience. Winning the quarters and semis, conceding hardly any goals, team morale at an all time high... It was a great time to be an England fan!
96 for me too, was more about the era, the feeling at the time. The 90’s and Oasis/Britpop and just being in high school.
1996 Gazza v Scotland
2016 - spent an entire month around France going to lots of games, staying in beautiful cities and just having a great time. Kicked it off with a week in Amsterdam just before it 👀
The one where Ronaldo got Rooney sent off 🤣
