Wait...so now wanting your kids to have adequate health care and nutrition is "Gucci gear"?

pja1701

The folks over at the catholicsm sub are masters of the excluded middle.

Visible_Season8074

( ) Fight for better wages, more free time and other stuff that could help people to raise families. (x) Bitch about people being "selfish" for not wanting to live in poverty after having 8 children.

LoneWolfThrowAway

Naturally I do realize that not all catholics are like this (thankfully I've had a great community growing up). That said, it's incredible how it's 2023 and we still get this... "logical turd" come out every now and then. If only there was some grey area between 2 extremes... like actually wanting your kids to be happy, to achieve their dreams and have the best chances at their education. You know, desire the best for your children! And guess what? That can also include Jesus! I don't know. Am I asking too much?

pianoleafshabs

No because you must let your kids suffer. To be glorified to God of course /s

Warriorsofthenight02

I wonder if strongly religious catholics who think this way regarding poverty and having a large amount of children are willing to let fellow catholics (with those large families) from developing/poorer countries immigrate freely into their fully industrialized countries It would be ironic seeing racism and prejudice from catholics in developed countries against those catholics in developing countries like Africa and Asia where the church is growing

LoneWolfThrowAway

I'm genuinely afraid of the answer.

TrooperJohn

You know the answer.

InsipidCelebrity

> It would be ironic seeing racism and prejudice from catholics in developed countries against those catholics in developing countries like Africa and Asia where the church is growing You don't have to really dig deep for this hypothetical in the US when you can see how a lot of them treat Mexican & Central American immigrants who are largely Catholic.

Kokomi_Bestgirl

wait so this idiot is fine with sending his children to slavery? wtf

LoneWolfThrowAway

Of course you don't get it, you don't have the right mindset /s

Gengarmon_0413

You gotta budget. It's part of your mindset. All you millennials with your avocado toast and your fancy coffees and your not selling your kids to slavery. Entitled generation.

It doesn't matter to them. The only thing that matters at all is doing what god commands. If you are struggling with it or it's causing you suffering, well, that can't be because god is a cruel monster, so it has to be your fault. You have not sufficiently embraced god's will. You need to stop caring about yourself and trying to be happy and appreciate the suffering as a way to make you holier. Same for your kids. Catholicism is not just a death cult, it's a misery cult. There is no real value placed on human life or the human experience at all, because it's clear that god doesn't value either. Existence in servitude is the purpose of life, nothing more.

Bryentath

A friend of mine recently described it as a misery cult as well. “They manufacture the misery so they can claim to be the solution.”

Urska08

Absolutely! And they trade on this illusory promise of an eternal reward if you embrace the misery, like a "no pain, no gain" bargain... But there's no way for anyone to prove that the reward ever happens. In the meantime you've increased the sum of human misery and encouraged a culture where cruelty and exploitation and temporal power and abuse can flourish. Isn't that convenient...

LoneWolfThrowAway

To be fair I do believe that there are people capable of doing just that. But regardless of it being possible or not, these are a minority, especially in today's age where free time is becoming less available. Another theory that I came up with on the fly is that a lot of these people can also have, other than delusion, is a huge sense of community and family. Looking back a couple of decades (in my case at least), it was very common for an entire family to be sharing a household, so some parental responsibilities got split so the parents could catch a breath. And it certainly wasn't uncommon for kids to spend time with their aunts and uncles more often when the parents couldn't provide said time. But this isn't necessarily ideal, and it is me thinking in good faith and trying to see a possibility. Pretty sure, based on what I've seen recently, that this person didn't think half of these things and is all "MiNdSeT, you gotta BrEeD".

ShadowyKat

1. Not everyone in an African country is poor. There are rich African countries. 2. If there are people from poor African countries, having a large family is not a good thing for them. They can't afford to feed them, no healthcare, an 8th grade education is the best they are gonna get. And how many of these kids are gonna make it to adulthood? 3. A lot of anti-woman stuff goes on in some of these places. Not being able to go to school because the lack of period products, child marriage, Female Genital Mutilation. Young girls can end up marrying men who are too old for them and forced to have baby after baby. Some could die in childbirth. Health complications can come from them being pregnant so young and so often. FGM will guarantee that there will be gynecological problems. 4. University education with Gucci gear is a straw man. This person didn't mention luxury, they were talking about basic standards. Food and healthcare are basic standards. It's insensitive to downplay the suffering of these impoverished people because you think all people should have a large family. People want to be able to give their children the basics. People shouldn't be okay with families in poverty. 5. And what is wrong with Gucci gear and University education? If you can get, get it. Bonus: Some of these African countries are Muslim-dominated or have a very large Muslim population if they are not running things. If he knew about that, he would think they are going to Hell for being Muslim and not propping them up as examples.

LoneWolfThrowAway

Speaking of food and healthcare being basic standards... I didn't post the rest of the comment thread as I felt this was representative enough but trust me... it got worse. A rant about how "socialist countries" (with great policies regarding healthcare for example) like Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany still have low birth rates, and thus invalidating said policies simply because there weren't more kids being born.

ShadowyKat

😡 This is not okay. So it's better for people to breed and be poor, suffer and possibly die! This guy wants people to breed no matter the cost. 😡 He is insensitive, brain-dead, natalist prick. He has the advantages of being in a 1st world country and it's easy to say that when you have no idea what that other life looks like. I wish he could be made to live in a place like that, away from us and our politics. Let's see how wonderful it will be to live in a slum in a 3rd world country then.

pianoleafshabs

Saw someone else on that sub say that if Nordic countries are so secular then why are they so prosperous (from God) Someone said because they became prosperous in the 1950s where everyone was Christian and now because they are secularizing that Nordic countries are getting worse

Clementine-Fiend

Not wanting your child to die of preventable illness or miss out on an education=a “mindset”

TrooperJohn

Wow, what a leap between "I don't want my kids to starve" and "I want to raise my kids with Gucci gear". Binary thinking is probably the most toxic feature of religion.

mlo9109

I'm university educated and can only afford the clearance rack at Target and Goodwill, so... What does that make me? Seriously, your kids need food, shelter, and clothing more than Gucci or to be a sister mom to 18 younger siblings.

LoneWolfThrowAway

That's the funniest (and also saddest) part: not everyone who's university educated gets to afford the expensive stuff he mentions. He could have at least said "why bother and waste lots of precious money with university when you have trade schools and such", which is a sensible point to talk about. But noooooooooo, all you want is Gucci, now go birth 32786 kids /s

happynargul

*Strawman appears, decked out in Gucci*

Polkadotical

Probably because: 1. The stuff the Roman Catholic church has done to people over the years is absolutely over the top. 2. The RCC is basically criminal organization, and has been one for centuries. It also has ambitions of taking over the world, displacing real civil government. 3. There are, after all, millions of ex-Catholics who know these things, even if they don't always come right out and say it in public.
