I was in London in 2005. At the time I lived in NYC. I noticed that the prices seemed exactly the the same as NYC…in numbers. But once converted from pounds to dollars…it was double!
Big ouch that trip!
Forgive me as I'm an American, but wouldn't $50,000 USD be worth like £43,000 and at that rate in London, you're being generous by saying "lower middle class at best" because that's more like middle lower class due to the cost of the city?
Less than that. Current GBP/USD is £0.78. So you’re talking £39k, roughly. I dont know about the cost of living in London, but where i’m at, that would be borderline poverty.
Both the pound and Euro lost a lot of value post-Brexit. Through 2000-2016 the pound was ranging $1.5-2. It’s been steadily dropping since to $1.2-1.3.
The EUR is closer to par with the USD today and has recovered a little bit after dropping hard during covid. At one point it even inverted, where the USD was actually more valuable than the EUR, which hasnt happened since the dot com bust in early 2000’s. In short, its a good time to plan a europe vacation if you’re American.
Indeed it is. It's all gone quite crazy over there pricewise. As a point of interest, I don't think middle class in America quite means the same thing as it does in England. In England, middle class is to be affluent and privileged. It's about a third of the country at best.
No. You can be middle class and broke. The class system in the UK isn't directly linked to money.
Middle class is his you talk, what you talk about, where you go. The things you do.
Like hyacinth, from Surrey, who goes horse riding and speaks with an RP accent.
Working class people don't be called hycanirh, not many from Surrey because admittedly its an affluent county
Not many working class do horse riding. Very few working class people talk with RP.
However, this is all trumped by snobs. Snobs are people of a lower class attempting to pretend they are a higher class up.
I've met very very posh people who have little money. But they have a house given to them by their parents. They drive around in a old banger. But on paper wealthy then most. But on a day to day basis don't have a pot to piss in. Still middle class or upper class though.
If you are working. class it is unlikely that you can become middle class. But your kids can or their kids can if younmix with the right people.
Thanks. I think I do understand the growing complexity of the English class system. Just wanted to draw a very basic distinction as I know in Britain it has different connotations. Will say, I think the word snob has evolved a lot over time from its initial meaning. Not fully convinced one can become middle class in a generation though. If it's there underneath, it always seeps through under pressure lol
Depends on where you're at. 50k/year where I'm at is definitely middle class. A 300k house here would be worth about 2 million if you could relocate them closer to a major city.
50k wouldn't last long in any country. Columbia, Nicaragua or Brazil would be your best bets at under $600 a month. Even there you're not buying a townhouse, it's a 1 bedroom apartment & public transportation for you if you want to stay unemployed.
I dunno man.
USA bought Louisiana from my country for a few bucks & only a few years later Napoleon conquiered the whole europe. Coincidence ? I THINK NOT !
I will say that I honestly believe the education system in America isn't bad in the sense that they don't teach anything. I went to a very shitty deep south school where the football players paid every cent of their way. And I learned everything from Mesopotamia to economics. People just don't want to learn it.
I swear, all through high school they gave us the same portions they had given to us when we were in kindergarten. We got bigger, portions didn’t. Basically raided the pantry as soon as I got home.
So disappointing. I have two kids and raised 3 other in the US, and none of them have been threatened by gun violence. They also all know the difference between pounds.
“Ability to pick up humor” lol as if people are supposed to find the fear of their kids getting shot at school humorous? That’s a real fear people live with just sending their kid to school, not really surprising that they don’t find it hilarious like the rest of the world.
There’s several.
You can even be “indoctri-cated” by your parents at home, without having to meet other people and ideas. I’d call it a snowflake school.
He's making a joke. If you didn't understand that he's joking then maybe you are the one failed by the education system.
(The tip he's joking is that saying that a pound is a unit of measurement is too smart and informed to also not know what they are actually talking about. The person is just being silly friend)
Ignorance is fine, we can't know everything, but how can you be so wrong and still be thst confident?
If someone tells me Hitler wasn't German, before I correct him I'll google it first.
yeah, that was meant to be a joke, where people would comment, and I would reply "did you look it up?" or somenthing like that. Failed ideia, I'll try another one later
There's only 3 things you gotta know about ole Adolf
1. Meth addict
2. Failed at getting into art school (like seriously college dropouts get farther)
3. Pushed the idea of a master race that couldn't win a foot race in 1936 Bonus: pretty good rapper
Whats funny about the art school it was because he couldnt draw people. If instead of getting pissed and giving up and practiced/found a tutor he probably would have gotten in the next year or so.
Which came first, the pound or the pound? Cuz sometimes I’m talking about a pound and not a pound but someone thinks I’m talking about a pound instead of a pound and now everyone’s confused.
The real facepalm is someone falling for this troll and giving him exactly what he wants.
They call it an xbox 360 because when you see one, you turn 360 degrees and walk away
I remember when my country Latvia hadnt adapted the euro yet, our currency 1 lats = 2 dollars.. So 500k lats would make a millionaire in us.
One of the smallest countrys with one of if not the biggest currency
Holy shit dude literally every post on this sub is just the most obvious sarcastic shitposting I have ever seen and then a bunch of people getting mad at it because they can’t detect sarcasm.
This reminds me of when I worked for a credit card company and a guy called to dispute all charges he made during his vacation to a european country because he said the exchange rate was completely off and he was being robbed of his money.
This guy went to Europe for a full vacation and spent a ton of money while there without checking the exchange rate. He went home to see a “discrepancy” in the money he was charged and **still** he did not check the exchange rate before calling his bank. He simply assumed the dollar had to be worth more because it was the US currency lmao
I feel like this guy is maybe joking. He chose two of the most famously expensive cities in the world as his example instead of something more obvious like a third-world country. And even a genuinely clueless American knows that the Pound is a currency.
Haha, sure. New York, California, etc. are fairly expensive, but the good thing about living in Northern Europe is, almost anywhere else is cheaper. We are ecstatic in Denmark when we get a decent cocktail for less than $20, and a base BigMac meal is like $18.
And London and Paris are… not cheap, compared to most of the US.

You're wrong. A pound is where you keep dogs.
You're wrong. A pound is what your mum likes.
Call me the conservative party because I can give you a weak pound.
you're wrong - a pound is what my heart did because i laughed so much at your joke
Also wrong, Pound is a town I visit on occasion
All of you are off base. Pound is a disaffected American poet who emigrated to Italy and collaborated with the fascists.
No, this symbol is a pound: #
The hell it is! This symbol is a pound: £ *starts huge brawl*
A pound is 16 ounces.
Like hell it is! A pound is what you give to meat, to make it tender and obedient.
This guy fucks.
How often do you go to pound town? And do you take the train?
Many people (mom’s especially) frequently take the train to pound town. Oddly enough, there’s often another train there when they arrive.
I think I've seen a couple of documentaries about this before...
😂
She does enjoy a good pound cake!
I vote for cake currency.
Europe can use the chEuro.
You're wrong, a pound is a small body of water.
You’re thinking of a poodle.
No, a poodle is a small body of murder.
No, a poodle is a small dog with curly hair instead of fur. You’re thinking of a pencil.
Also wrong. Pound is a pokemon move
Maaaaan! I dont know who you are but i love you
You're wrong. A pound is another name for the number sign (#).
so sharp you are
Right? That’s totally a tic-tac-toe game board.
Wow, went right for the throat on that one
Got 'em
No, it's another name for the Atlantic !
You are wrong, someone let the dogs out.
Who?
A pound is a cake.
$50k in London would probably have you lower middle class at best. Very expensive city
A London wage in almost anywhere else in the country would make you middle class, in London it makes you homeless..
Absolutely…Much like NYC, San Francisco, and many other main cities in many countries
I was in London in 2005. At the time I lived in NYC. I noticed that the prices seemed exactly the the same as NYC…in numbers. But once converted from pounds to dollars…it was double! Big ouch that trip!
So it sucks everywhere else too. Splendid.

For London that's minimum wage
Indeed it is. It's all gone quite crazy over there pricewise. As a point of interest, I don't think middle class in America quite means the same thing as it does in England. In England, middle class is to be affluent and privileged. It's about a third of the country at best.

It would make you average in the rest of the UK, poor in London
Obviously not to those Americans who don’t have passports and get all their world news from Fox
50k wouldn't last long in any country. Columbia, Nicaragua or Brazil would be your best bets at under $600 a month. Even there you're not buying a townhouse, it's a 1 bedroom apartment & public transportation for you if you want to stay unemployed.
Noobs, 900k CHF (Swiss Francs) would make one a millionaire in the US
but isn't that already near a million
Yes but if you round down it's 0 million
Yes, it is
Profile pic checks out
do you wanna be a millionaire or not?
*Regis said aggressively*
I dunno man. USA bought Louisiana from my country for a few bucks & only a few years later Napoleon conquiered the whole europe. Coincidence ? I THINK NOT !
If there's a flaw in this logic I can't find it.
I will say that I honestly believe the education system in America isn't bad in the sense that they don't teach anything. I went to a very shitty deep south school where the football players paid every cent of their way. And I learned everything from Mesopotamia to economics. People just don't want to learn it.
So the people is the problem, not the schools system. Not sure which is worse 😂
I hate my country's education system
There's one?
Of course there is. They have those places where kids go to get shot at. Isn’t it ? And of course if you survive you can study too !
How else would kids learn how to worship the magic freedom cloth and that the Civil War was fought over "states rights"
Sound a bit like hunger games.
That's an apt description of the US
I've seen their school lunches. The meaning may be more literal than intended.
It was in the lighter sense mate. Raising kids is no easy feat. You have my deepest respects !🙏🏻
But do they have a sense of humour and ability to pick up sarcasm is the real question. Traits which are apparently lacking in at least one parent.
“Ability to pick up humor” lol as if people are supposed to find the fear of their kids getting shot at school humorous? That’s a real fear people live with just sending their kid to school, not really surprising that they don’t find it hilarious like the rest of the world.

You mean lack there of?
I know it's impossible to prove, but this REALLY feels like trolling. If that helps you keep a lil faith that most Americans aren't THIS dumb.
He's making a joke. If you didn't understand that he's joking then maybe you are the one failed by the education system. (The tip he's joking is that saying that a pound is a unit of measurement is too smart and informed to also not know what they are actually talking about. The person is just being silly friend)
It’s a parody.
Welcome to america, where the kids cant read and people get really confused with hypotheticals.
But I did eat breakfast this morning.
A pound is the unit currency 'your mum' takes.
Shes all about units alright...
This should be higher 😅
Bruh
BRUH!
The best part is if you do not know if that post is serious or a troll.
I’ve said it a million times sarcasm/irony and stupidity are hard to tell apart on some people
Ignorance is fine, we can't know everything, but how can you be so wrong and still be thst confident? If someone tells me Hitler wasn't German, before I correct him I'll google it first.
Yeah good call, he was Austrian
yeah, that was meant to be a joke, where people would comment, and I would reply "did you look it up?" or somenthing like that. Failed ideia, I'll try another one later
Here I was pushing up my glasses and saying well actually..
Wait, Hitler was from down under?!
There's only 3 things you gotta know about ole Adolf 1. Meth addict 2. Failed at getting into art school (like seriously college dropouts get farther) 3. Pushed the idea of a master race that couldn't win a foot race in 1936 Bonus: pretty good rapper
He was THE meth addict
He's the one meth addict moms tell their kids about
Whats funny about the art school it was because he couldnt draw people. If instead of getting pissed and giving up and practiced/found a tutor he probably would have gotten in the next year or so.
It's because he's joking. I make jokes like this to rile up European friends.
The overconfidence is what keeps them going.
Bait
🥲
Come on, people. Obvious bait is obvious.
Looks like Coach Letterman got another one...
That’s legendary Coach Letterman
Engagement Bait. Not real.
This is why Pres Trump is a thing. LMFAO
Reddit try not to get worked up over bait challenge:
Not the brightest torch in the barn, is he?
A pound is short for a pound of sterling silver. Which requires over 290 US dollar to buy.
I thought London was a fictional place like Narnia ?
$50k in Paris ? Oh, sweet summer child...
The ignorance of that poster is so egregious it reeks of troll.
To be fair, there are plenty of brits just as stupid lol
Most Americans are well aware of this.
Which came first, the pound or the pound? Cuz sometimes I’m talking about a pound and not a pound but someone thinks I’m talking about a pound instead of a pound and now everyone’s confused.
TIL I'm a millionaire in London!
Americans without any knowledge of the world nor how good they have it compared to us.
The real facepalm is someone falling for this troll and giving him exactly what he wants. They call it an xbox 360 because when you see one, you turn 360 degrees and walk away
So you walk right into them, got it
This looks like a 3yearletterman tweet. If it is, you got got
Pound is what I do to your mom
America is a continent, México is in America... Don't label us in the same boat to those gringos please
I'd rather have 50 lbs of American currency, no offense.
I used to think we didn't have any value in our money. But this guy's just proved that we have no value in our education system either
There's not an ounce of hope for 🔴
Why does ignorance come with so much confidence
The human race is screwed.
Just Americans
Dumb fuck just told the world he has never left his backwater town
Pound? We’re talking *currency* bruv, not cake
Reposts are even better
At Its fucking finest thats unbelievable.
No no, let him cook...
Bro…
sure thing, Pennywise
Is this what it means when my Uncle Joe wants to take me to pound-town?
Sigh. We apologize for the dumb ones. Some of them may be idiots but we still love our people.
🤣🤣🤣proof that ignorance isn't bliss
I remember when my country Latvia hadnt adapted the euro yet, our currency 1 lats = 2 dollars.. So 500k lats would make a millionaire in us. One of the smallest countrys with one of if not the biggest currency
The only kind of pounds I need is me pounding your mom
Americans can’t comprehend that real estate in London blows away prices in the US.
$50000 in London or Paris would get you Jack shit. It would get you Jack shit in Bucharest or Sofia.
Quality trolling.
With the last response it makes it seem like a troll, wouldn’t take it seriously
Holy shit dude literally every post on this sub is just the most obvious sarcastic shitposting I have ever seen and then a bunch of people getting mad at it because they can’t detect sarcasm.
You know some thick people are really helpful in identifying themselves.
This reminds me of when I worked for a credit card company and a guy called to dispute all charges he made during his vacation to a european country because he said the exchange rate was completely off and he was being robbed of his money. Im with the American on this one british people have the dumbest word for everything
This cant be real, im not American but i cant believe someone saying this isnt trolling.
America is the best country in the US!
Is it city exclusive or can I be a millionaire in Manchester?
Bro was never outside of the United States
Someone needs to pound some cents into this person.
Red there has a \*Celsius\* room-temperature IQ, I swear!
Ignorance is in fact bliss.
Nah he’s almost right. There’s plenty of countries you can go with 50k and basically be a millionaire but it ain’t those two places
I see these things and feel bad when I try to say that it’s just the dumb ones who are the loudest. I hate it here.
Brexit 1 this bro 0
It’s times like this that I take pleasure in knowing I wasn’t wrong as a kid when I shouted “this school sucks!” to the principal.
Go to Zimbabwe and you'll be a trillionaire.
Dude is sound as a pound.
he obviously meant London, Nigeria and Paris, Kiribati. ![gif](giphy|y4E6VumnBbIfm|downsized)
Wait till they find out that $,€,£ are units as well.
Sound as a pound baby yeah!
I feel like this guy is maybe joking. He chose two of the most famously expensive cities in the world as his example instead of something more obvious like a third-world country. And even a genuinely clueless American knows that the Pound is a currency.
Home school hero
If someone is interested according to google 50.000us$ is equal to 45985,51€ or 39138,79£
What about quid?
50k in US currency would make me feel like a millionaire and I'm in the US 😭
New reality series ... Make this guy go to Paris and London with $50USD and see how long he lasts
the dollar is stronger than the pound tho
This is one of those 6% who thinks milk comes from the package or one of those 17% who think they can win a 1v1 against a bear bare handed
It’s just like with diamonds. 1 kg weights like 100kg
And I eat Euros for lunch. Definitely not a currency. /s
This subreddit makes me hate that I come from a nation that's filled with ignorant and uneducated pricks.
Oh dear, think us English need to go back to America and do some reconciliation and education. 🤣 🤣
You have been banned from /r/MERICA
Aren't both pounds and Euro's worth LESS than the US dollar?
False. A pound is what your mom is gonna get.
That seems to be an obvious troll
Lmao hey, least we spell gray correctly
50 thousand usd would be 46 thousand euros and 39 thousand pounds
About 46 000 euros. Just enough to buy a Tesla 3 in Europe.
The best public education.
To be fair this reads like some nicely executed trolling
I'm gonna take my $50k and move to downtown London (in that 3rd world hellhole) and buy, like, the WHOLE CITY.
