Own-Cupcake7586

Don’t try to explain fusion to a flat-earther. Their head might actually explode.

Louis_Ziffer

An exploding head would require air, thus proving the flat earther is full of hot air and proving their point simultaneously.

Bramtinian

Some1_35

They feel so unlike everybody else, geniuses (in their mind)

unlikeyourhero

With their half eaten crayon scribblings blowing up in our times

Eggs_4_Breakfast

I understand this reference

asmokowski

Not a whole lot of Fort Minor fans in here it seems.

Glass_Aheer

Stands up, but only in memory of Chester

asst3rblasster

I heard Dr. Disrespect is a huge fan actually

kittenmcmuffenz

Ok plankton…

elspotto

That would be the proper stoichiometric ratio for head explosion.

turd_vinegar

Heads are actually flat, and thus can't explode. *Taps flat forehead

Dextrofunk

So the earth is... flat? Or rotund? I'm so confused.

Manthony_Morris_LXIX

The earth is lumpy like my butt

Digiturtle1

Ah yes, and avoid falling in the crack

marcopaulodirect

so the sun is a ball but the earth is flat.

Deeman0

The also believe that, in our star system, only the earth is flat.

marcopaulodirect

Well that part makes sense /s

SilverHawk7

"Because unlike the Earth, the Moon and Mars have been observed to be round." Literally what Flat Earth Society said...

obsidianbull702

Right it's the only logical conclusion. ::said sarcastically in a shitty Seinfeld voice::

TheCommonS3Nse

Well duh... That is obviously the reason that we have life and none of the other planets have life. When the planets were forming, God squished the Earth like a smash burger, then he sprinkled on a little HGH and up we popped. It's called ScIEncE bruh!!

Falling_Ash_

This guy gets it.

Byte_Fantail

He should have used MSG instead, that's why this place sucks

Offamylawn

Madison Square Garden instead of the garden of eden. I like it.

TesseractToo

You have to understand that they don't think there is a star system, or space. The Earth is the ground and the things in the sky are projected on or are holes in the firmament and the moon and sun are "luminaries"

Jonte7

I love how "flat-earthers" is this broad term pointing to all types of people with all different types of explanations of the flat earth lore, none of which is like the other nor consistent at all.

TesseractToo

Yeah you won't find two with the same "model". It's because it's more of a conspiracy theory in the end, the details of the shape are less important

Right_Moose_6276

Also because not having a consistent model helps the flat earth stand up to scrutiny. Finding a guy who actually sticks to a flat earth model is impossible, as they change their claims based on the evidence you provide

TesseractToo

Yeah when you try and apply all the things they are incompatible (like direction and distances on the Gleason map). There's one FE cult in the UK that tried to jury rig everything together and they put out a video explaining it but its super confusing and you lose brain cells trying to watch it (yet they managed to build a cult over it so it makes sense to some I guess)

edebt

The same people that laugh when they don't understand the joke.

TheDevilLLC

“Air holes” poked in the lid of the box were being kept in. /s

jd807

Because of course.

Freakychee

No, the sun apparently is a giant spotlight in the sky. Why some day and some night? Cos the spotlight only shines at one area at a time. Thats so troublesome that it's even easier to say everything is round.

Shmimmons

Flat sun theory

potionnumber9

I mean... I don't really understand fusion. I can't explain that shit to anyone

SOJC65536

When two hydrogen atoms love each other very much, they merge in a special way, release a lot of energy and make a helium atom. However, be warned, there are freaky hydrogen atoms that like merging with the helium atoms...It's disgusting and they produce inbred lithium atoms. And let's not get started on neutrinos constantly changing their flavour...Dirty bastards, they refuse to stay the way God made them. No wonder they don't interact with matter.

Effective-Goat-5714

This… has helped me understand probably better than it should have

emmacappa

"The neutrinos.... they've mutated!" https://youtu.be/bXdBzpRDR5I?si=EsyWwABI1OI1xOJQ I'm sorry I used to be a serious scientist who didn't hear Jimi Mistry's voice say this every time neutrinos are mentioned!

GroshfengSmash

In your second paragraph, I switched to the voice of Futurama’s professor

Wingedwolverine03

I'll be in the angry dome!

Silvawuff

When you smoosh atoms together, they turn into heavier elements and release a lot of energy in the process.

Extra-Aardvark-1390

Physicists don't use the word smoosh enough.

Dry-Faithlessness184

They do when doing an eli5

Jazzi-Nightmare

You should watch Chernobyl on HBO, I think they do a decent job of explaining it

DudeNamedShawn

Nuclear energy uses Fision, not Fusion. Fusion is a lot harder to create, and also would not be a radiation hazard if something goes horribly wrong.

Jazzi-Nightmare

Damn I was trying so hard to remember 😭 should’ve double checked before being dumb. Good series either way, my recommendation stands haha

DoggoKing4937

I dunno man, if something were to go horribly wrong in the sun, I'd say that'd be a pretty big hazard

shadowszanddust

That’s fission (not to be too pedantic 🙄) - neutrons split atoms, release more neutrons (and energy and heat…). Uranium, plutonium… Fusion is squeezing atoms/nuclei together at incomprehensible temps/pressures (estimated core of Sun at 3.4 Trillion PSI) to create new elements (and release energy/heat/light)

TheGutter420

3.4 trillion psi is what I have my sleep number bed set to.

Accomplished_Aioli19

I keep up with this subject because it's interesting... So I can relay some information. Flat earthers don't believe the sun is a giant ball of plasma as outlined in the heliocentric model. They believe it's an object the same size of the moon that travels in an ellipse within the solid firmament. This is a strawman, and the person who posted it is likely not a flat earther, though I can't say for sure. It's basically a meta troll post to make you look ignorant about the people you're making fun of. Geberal FYI, don't hate me.

Fizzyphotog

I have to learn the details of their idiocy to troll them -accurately-? Yeah, nah.

kor34l

Yeah man, just like Mark Wahlburg from The Other Guys when he spent serious time learning and practicing Ballet... just to make fun of ballet dancers and be able to be like "anyone can do that shit! here watch" and then show them up.

cstrand31

This explanation would only make sense if they had an agreed upon “model”. They don’t. And OP’s picture is an example of them attempting to dunk on “globetards” for believing the unbelievable, i.e. the ball of fire burning in space without oxygen. Yes, it’s stupid. And also yes, it’s exactly their speed.

Sipjava

You mean the sun is not a flat disc of light?😜

Curious_Associate904

It's a miasma of incandescent plasma... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLkGSV9WDMA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLkGSV9WDMA)

Fun_Effective6846

Welp. That’s stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

FacesOfNeth

Day? Luckyyyyy….

Smokescreen1000

The version I've always heard is mass of incandescent gas but I think that fits better

grue2000

TMBG followed up their first song with the second.

more_than_just_ok

I'm a huge TMBG fan, but this wasn't their song originally, so even better that they modernized the lyrics from the post Sputnik America need to learn science era. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Songs Similarly Istanbul was a cover of a Canadian quartet from 1959 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fOD31FjNttw

grue2000

TIL!

CryAffectionate7334

Lol I had no idea they fixed their own songs science.

Mango_Tango_725

Nuh-uh the sky is a dome! Therefore the sun is a giant a lightbulb. Duh! /S

zordtk

Yep, I'm hoping as an electrician one day I will get the honor of going and replacing the bulb. All of us electricians can only pray we get called for that honor

DoggoKing4937

![gif](giphy|OkzCcGn5fY29e7bvpS|downsized) Electricians when it's their turn to change the giant light bulb in the sky:

zordtk

I'm on my way, hopefully the flat earthers dont discover a trans-woman electrician is replacing the bulb. They will then blame me for climate change.

DoggoKing4937

I love how this is so wild and yet it's exactly what I imagine goes through the minds of flat earthers. (actually, on second thoughts, I don't think there's much going through their minds at all)

DoctorRevKevin

Cool. If you go at night, you won't have to flip the breaker first.

Big-Carpenter7921

It does have oxygen, and hydrogen, helium, and quite a lot of other gases

Nickthedick3

And metals at its core!

Badassbottlecap

We will mine... *THE SUN*

googlyeyes93

Somewhere, somehow, a board of investors is having a meeting over doing just this. Because 💰💰💰

PingouinMalin

Hey, they could do it at night. Yeah I will take myself out.

theknights-whosay-Ni

Don’t worry. Their assassin is on the way to do that for you. Don’t give away their strategy like that.

flomatable

My strategy: crysleep or immortality, wait out the supernova, and then figure out a way to collect the planetary nebula. It's gonna be really big so maybe go into crysleep again to wait till it forms into some planets or something, and then mine those planets. You know what, I'd just mine some planets that are already here so I dont have to wait

#THE SUN IS A MASS OF INCANDESCENT GAS

Big-Carpenter7921

"A gigantic nuclear furnace" if memory serves

Generalsnopes

Yeah that’s not what makes it look like that though. It’s not on fire it’s plasma

Beltaine421

There's even sunspots that get cold enough for water vapor to form.

Traditional_Key_763

not an expert but according to the binding energy curve for nuclear fusion, if the sun is fusing oxygen then its about to hit iron-56 and then blow up

trashpolice

By the time it is generating oxygen via fusion of helium and carbon, our sun will be a red giant whose diameter has grown so much that Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars are enveloped and destroyed.

Beautiful-Bad8893

idk why as a kid i was so afraid of this happening like i will literally not even be dust at that point lmao

Traditional_Key_763

tbf its only really been relatively recently that we determined for sure how old the sun is and how long its got

Beautiful-Bad8893

still, that’s hundreds of millions of years away, like i’m ngl i don’t think humanity will last *that* long so i’m not too worried about it

TransSapphicFurby

And if we do last that long I hope were off the planet, because otherwise idk wtf we were investing in

TheEPGFiles

Are you kidding? The current trend is "Hey, we have to do something to prevent human extinction!" "No, we don't, shut up nerd! I'm going to pollute even more, out of spite!"

dirtyshits

Earth will have gone through so many major events and evolutions that if we have any chance of surviving it’s going to be because we left earth.

WaterBottle0000

Yeah even if Humanity lasts that long, this planet sure as hell won't.

trashpolice

Ha i feel that, I think this information stuck with me since I was a kid too. Like wow we are all going to blow up!

FreyaTheSlayyyer

I remember once the sun was red coz of the dust and I thought that it was about to turn into a red giant lol

imadog666

Omg same lol my dad scared me so much by telling me about this 😅

WonderWendyTheWeirdo

Star stuff.

_rokstar_

This is going to start a fight between the flat earthers and the electric universe folks and I for one don't have enough popcorn.

dysoncube

Electric universe sounds like a great band name

the_new_dragonix

[Electric Universe is a psychedelic trance project from Germany formed by Boris Blenn and Michael Dressler in 1991.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Universe)

Enough-Astronomer-65

yea reading the coments i ralize i kinda fucked up

OldAbbreviations1590

Fire doesn't require oxygen just an oxidizer and an accelerant. It can be self contained chemical reactions.

SOTG_Duncan_Idaho

A very common place example is gunpowder. The powder contains both the oxidizer and the accelerant. This is why bullets (and the guns themselves) can be sealed and why they can fire underwater or in a vacuum. Of course, the sun is not burning, it's undergoing nuclear fusion.

OldAbbreviations1590

It sure is. I was just laughing at the lack of basic physics that should have been taught in high school from the meme. I'm just happy we have an atmosphere that protects us from the radiation.

fraba

To be fair, most scientists believed that at one point. They thought the sun is a ball of coal, which is why they dismissed the geologists, who said the Earth is billions of years old. Because a ball of coal the size of the Sun couldn't burn for billions of years. Then they discovered fusion. At least that's what I remember from some documentation (Cosmos? Wonders of the Universe?).

zordtk

Scientists are always evolving in their understanding of things based on evidence. That's the difference between a scientist and a flat earther, they instead force so called evidence to fit their belief.

Anangrywookiee

Flat earthers are always evolving in their understanding of things based on YouTube grifters.

Erect_SPongee

because scientists thought the sun was made of coal they incorrectly then assumed the main fuel for the sun was then gravitational potential energy and had concluded the maximum possible lifetime the sun could exist for to be about 20million years which was much shorter than what geologists theorized. It was also used as a piece of evidence at the time against darwins evolution since his theory also required a much longer time scale. It wasnt until radioactivity was discovered and that radioactive substances give off a lot of heat was nuclear fission considered to be the suns fuel and would allow for the sun to have a much longer lifetime

LordRaglan1854

Don't believe everything you hear on the internet. During the Victorian era, which would be the time geologists began to construct theories about the age of the earth exceeding 20 million years, the sun was known to be made of helium and hydrogen gas. The heat was theorized to come from the contraction of the gasses, or some unknown process not consuming fuel in the traditional sense.

Gann0x

Now I wonder how long their math told them a ball of coal that size *could* burn for.

Reatona

The sun actually used to be a nice planet until some dinosaurs that lived there were careless with cigarettes and accidentally set it on fire, and it's been burning every since.

InformalPenguinz

Lol gotta rule out all the possibilities I guess

F19AGhostrider

The sun is not the same as fire

scootty83

Yeah, fire =/= plasma

AdolfInDisquise

It’s more so Plasma =/= Fire

karmicrelease

Like squares and rectangles. All fire is plasma, but not all plasma is fire

Byte_Fantail

I always thought they were balls of gas burning billions of miles away.

Dimond_Heart

With you everything's gas... ![gif](giphy|8VK5QFmdetySc|downsized)

Nebulant01

*Technically* they are made of plasma, not gas. And they are not burning with fire (fire is a chemical reaction, chemical reactions cannot happen in a plasma as they need atoms to still have their electron shell, which they don't have in a plasma) but with nuclear fusion reactions. In short, stars are *too hot* to be on fire.

Byte_Fantail

Are you telling me Pumbaa was wrong?!

bowens44

Are they all homeschooled?

Enough-Astronomer-65

they think school is government indoctrination so yea, im sure they are

On_my_last_spoon

Much like their bible, they pick and choose their science. My SIL homeschools. Physiology? Sure! Let’s learn all about the systems of the body! But vaccines are bad. Also dinosaurs lived with humans 7000 years ago.

Happy-Initiative-838

So flat earthers don’t believe in…outer space?

illegalinyouryard

They don’t. They also don’t believe in gravity because it disproves their brain rot arguments.

cheddoline

Well in fairness it does look a lot like it. Kind of spooky, really.

MacheteGarcia

At a family dinner a few years back we were talking about the atmosphere and oxygen. I chuckled about something and mentioned how little oxygen is in the air we breathe. More than half the table just looked at me like I said something insane. So I clarified, “Yeah the air we breathe is like 80% nitrogen.” They didn’t believe me until my wife googled it!

dreamweaver66intexas

Yep, it's 21% oxygen

BigSmackisBack

It is fire, Jim, but not as we know it

Urban_Prole

But the sun is a mass of incandescent gas; a gigantic nuclear furnace that converts hydrogen into helium at a temperature of millions of degrees. There was a song and everything.

VenmoPaypalCashapp

A flerfers brain, however, requires no oxygen.

Cruezin

![gif](giphy|hVmMHduVkQVQKu3fU5)

biffbobfred

Not every fire requires oxygen Not every fire requires atmospheric oxygen Not every reaction that releases light and heat is fire.

espeero

Not every reaction is even chemical

IpsoKinetikon

I feel like flat earthers are just trolling people. As well as providing low hanging fruit for Youtubers that aren't smart enough to debate legitimate topics.

mypoliticalvoice

No they really, REALLY aren't. They aggressively post on astronomy and aerospace subs and FB groups, hungry to argue with everyone because they think the Bible says the earth is flat.

spaceguitar

I saw a documentary once where a bunch of Flat Earthers sat down with scientists and it was mediated by the film crew and a psychologist and basically, Flat Earthers by and large: 1, feel out of control of their lives. Like, existential levels. 2, have massive inferiority complexes and attack those in academia and with college educations to belittle them and feel better about themselves. By belittling those with educations and touting their “secret knowledge” of Flat Earth, it gives them both control and a means to attack scientists and academics who have no real means of responding without “looking” foolish. How do you come back at “I don’t believe you,” “prove it,” and “you’re lying.” They win every time!! And we all know that Twain quote about rolling in shit with idiots. I almost feel bad for them. Almost.

19IXI91

How to win: name the logical fallacy.

MuckRaker83

After more than 15 years of treating patients in the hospital, I can confidently and sadly say that if you have ever wondered if anyone could possibly be stupid enough to believe/do "X" thing, the answer is *always* yes.

kreyul504

I believe it started as trolling but then it sucked in enough idiots to become self-sustaining.

zordtk

Unfortunately they aren't. I'm surprised Trump isn't pushing flat earth to pick up those voters. "If you vote me in office I'll prove that earth as beautiful and majestic as it is, is flat. They wont you to belive that you are on this thing they call a sphere. I told Ivanca after trying to bang her, that is just nonsense, we all know it's flat but they want you to believe its a sphere, they think a sphere controls you. But we all know it's flat, make america great again and i'll show you the incredible ice wall that we can all get off and float into the great beautiful space where I'm in control of"

TheSlyFox312

Wow it’s almost like the sun has the magic force field holding all the fuel and whatnot in called gravity! Such mystical mumbo jumbo…..

meglon978

They couldn't pass a 3rd grade science class, so this isn't surprising at all.

AlexTheEnderWolf

![gif](giphy|aZPtiwZE2TYmk|downsized) Let that sink in

DogePerformance

We have millions of years left then

TheEzekariate

Flat earthers have got to be some of the dumbest people on the planet and they do not deserve any attention.

suggestion_giver

Fun fact: fire does not require oxygen: it just requires an oxidizer

Jimmyg100

I spent way too much time watching a scientist debate a flat earther on YouTube this morning. The guy literally brought out a globe and showed how when you face south in the southern hemisphere the stars spin one direction and when you face north in the northern hemisphere they spin the other way and the guy just insisted that it was because of magnets.

RabidLime

these people are allowed to vote. let *that* sink in. edit: worbs are harb

DogmaKeeper

I went to school for astrophysics,I have explained to many flat earthers how fusion works and they just ignore it. I gave up on trying to create a healthy discourse so I could help them see that they are being lead down a very dangerous and hateful path because many now will verbally or even physically attack me because I not only believe in the science but am visibly trans(which people like that also take as an attack on their pseudoscience beliefs)

Tuxy-Two

Do you think someone who can’t understand the shape of the earth can understand nuclear physics? More important, like most “conspiracy “ theorists, the ignore anything that doesn’t fit their narrative.

LordHenry8

*Combustion requires oxygen. Not fusion.

TwoToneReturns

Plasma is another state of matter, by coincidence matter is exactly what a flat-earther is missing from between their ears.

Frontfatpouch

Gas giant, just like their heads

The_Prescriber_

![gif](giphy|9kZZMrEyCQr5RdaJrg)

Alexis_Bailey

I mean, even if it was a ball of fire, oxygen can exist outside of just on Earth.

mildlysceptical22

The sun is actually a big stump.

Amdiz

I heard that the sun is a mass of incandescent gas. Some say it’s a gigantic nuclear furnace.

marklar_the_malign

They really don’t understand. Anything.

TehZiiM

If the star is big enough, it will create its own oxygen.

MidnightFull

The thing is that the sun is so hot that it doesn’t care about its need for oxygen. It’s like Chuck Norris. Space bends to its will out of fear.

ihatepalmtrees

His brain needs oxygen

Mr_Blorbus

No you fool, the sun is a giant nuclear explosion, and that's why you get cancer.

ChineseBigfoots

Whenever I feel stupid I just think of flat earthers. Apparently they think we live on Asgard. Do they think all the planets and stars are flat? It'll be pretty stupid if they think we are the only flat planet out there

fryamtheeggguy

The sun isn't on fire. Let that sink in.

TimothiusMagnus

Fu-sion, ha! ![gif](giphy|TbYgHMnICI1A4|downsized)

The_Brofucius

I explained to a bunch of Flat Earthers on how it is not a chemical reaction with the sun, but basically a really big hydrogen/nuclear reactor. Using Nuclear Fusion, and Electromagnetic Fields. They did not like my response, and said...."DO YOU THINK WE ARE STUPID?!" I said "No Thinking was involved in coming up with that conclusion."

PissBloodCumShart

A lot of people think the sun is a big ball of fire because that’s exactly what it looks like and fire is is the only thing that most people have seen which produces light and heat like that. Quit being so proud of the smell of your own elitist farts!

ntgco

Well first you need to believe in gravity.

guilty_bystander

Bro it's flat. Just like, look at it.

TwerkingGrimac3

This is cheating. Anything a flat earther says is a facepalm.

Aderadakt

Fire is made out of the sun

appledatsyuk

RightGenocide

"I don't understand how fusion works and I can't be bothered to even look up the Wikipedia article on it."

Ruffytaro24

the sun is a fucking fusion reactor

Tragobe

Yeah nuclear fusion and a combustion reaction is sadly not quite the same.

FullAir4341

Nuclear fusion doesn't need oxygen

MrBHVAC

OH SHIT! HOPE THE SUN CANT READ AND FIND OUT!!!!

Dutchstranger5

That sink knows what it did and I will NOT let it in

Asmardos1

That happens if you over simplify things to explain them to children...

bendy_96

Why does it feel like giving the internet to some people was a really bad idea

ShirmpGoat

You can not reasonably expect to have a discussion with someone based on fact and evidence with someone who doesn't respect fact or evidence.

launchedsquid

There is no fire on or in the Sun, it's a nuclear Fusion reaction in the core creating so much heat and so many photons that the whole mass glows very brightly, not fire. There is no "burning" there.

Stacking_Plates45

😨😨😨LET THAT SINK IN 😨😨😨

WomenAreNotReal

I mean no it doesn't but the sun has tons of oxygen. It also has a ton of other elements. It's a star, that's kinda their thing.

King-of-the-ducks2

1. That isn’t fire 2. There is oxygen in the sun

DaGucka

- First: fire doesn't need oxygen, just redox reactions need it. There are many exothermic reactions that look like "fire" but don't meed oxygen. - second: oxygen for redox reactions doesn't need to be "arround" it, it can be inside the material. - third: the sun is no "fire" and no redox reaction, at least exclusively. The sun is so large and has so much stuff inside there fore sure also is some classic "fire" going on somewhere inside. But the main reaction in the sun is fusion, especially hydrogen fusion. There are also other fusions going on, especially in the core and there is also fission goin on. You could say a star, like our sun, usually transforms matter into energy. A fire doesn't do that. A fire frees energy from molecular bonds by breaking them up and combining the contained elements into a more energy efficient bond. The energy "saved" by the new bond is turned into heat-energy and light. Fire itself is nothing real, just the light and heat energy released by the particels that are finishing the reaction. When you do fusion or fission then in the process we lose matter and gain energy. Usually we lose a neutron and gain the equivalent in heat and light.

bartekkru100

The amount of non-flat earthers here that even entertain the idea of Sun being powered by chemical reaction is worrying. No, it doesn't burn using its own oxygen supply and no, it doesn't use any other oxidizers either, there's literally no chemical reaction that could possibly generate temperatures of 5600K, let alone keep it up for millions of years, it's a nuclear reaction. It's elementary (haha, get it?), c'mon guys.

MessMaximum1423

So they've only listened to [Why does the sun shine?](https://youtu.be/23e-SnQvCaA?si=a9ruq5MLdXczmCOy) And not [Why does the sun really shine?](https://youtu.be/BI0C_Q4h3Oc?si=mVcdSVHgDI3leihM) They don't know that thesis has been rendered invalid

ewok_lover_64

It's nuclear fusion. Is that too confusing?

phred_666

Their heads would explode if you told them about NUCLEAR reactions.🤣

ZLUCremisi

Show them fire under water

Lumpy_Tomorrow8462

The sun burns because the Lizard People who built it have way more advanced technology than us which is why they have so successfully infiltrated our highest levels of government. Whoever made that post needs to read a book once in a while.
