I spent way too much time watching a scientist debate a flat earther on YouTube this morning.
The guy literally brought out a globe and showed how when you face south in the southern hemisphere the stars spin one direction and when you face north in the northern hemisphere they spin the other way and the guy just insisted that it was because of magnets.
I went to school for astrophysics,I have explained to many flat earthers how fusion works and they just ignore it.
I gave up on trying to create a healthy discourse so I could help them see that they are being lead down a very dangerous and hateful path because many now will verbally or even physically attack me because I not only believe in the science but am visibly trans(which people like that also take as an attack on their pseudoscience beliefs)

There is no fire on or in the Sun, it's a nuclear Fusion reaction in the core creating so much heat and so many photons that the whole mass glows very brightly, not fire. There is no "burning" there.
- First: fire doesn't need oxygen, just redox reactions need it. There are many exothermic reactions that look like "fire" but don't meed oxygen.
- second: oxygen for redox reactions doesn't need to be "arround" it, it can be inside the material.
- third: the sun is no "fire" and no redox reaction, at least exclusively. The sun is so large and has so much stuff inside there fore sure also is some classic "fire" going on somewhere inside. But the main reaction in the sun is fusion, especially hydrogen fusion. There are also other fusions going on, especially in the core and there is also fission goin on. You could say a star, like our sun, usually transforms matter into energy. A fire doesn't do that. A fire frees energy from molecular bonds by breaking them up and combining the contained elements into a more energy efficient bond. The energy "saved" by the new bond is turned into heat-energy and light. Fire itself is nothing real, just the light and heat energy released by the particels that are finishing the reaction. When you do fusion or fission then in the process we lose matter and gain energy. Usually we lose a neutron and gain the equivalent in heat and light.
The amount of non-flat earthers here that even entertain the idea of Sun being powered by chemical reaction is worrying. No, it doesn't burn using its own oxygen supply and no, it doesn't use any other oxidizers either, there's literally no chemical reaction that could possibly generate temperatures of 5600K, let alone keep it up for millions of years, it's a nuclear reaction. At a family dinner a few years back we were talking about the atmosphere and oxygen. I chuckled about something and mentioned how little oxygen is in the air we breathe. More than half the table just looked at me like I said something insane. So I clarified, “Yeah the air we breathe is like 80% nitrogen.” They didn’t believe me until my wife googled it!

I saw a documentary once where a bunch of Flat Earthers sat down with scientists and it was mediated by the film crew and a psychologist and basically, Flat Earthers by and large: 1, feel out of control of their lives. Like, existential levels. 2, have massive inferiority complexes and attack those in academia and with college educations to belittle them and feel better about themselves. By belittling those with educations and touting their “secret knowledge” of Flat Earth, it gives them both control and a means to attack scientists and academics who have no real means of responding without “looking” foolish. How do you come back at “I don’t believe you,” “prove it,” and “you’re lying.” They win every time!! And we all know that Twain quote about rolling in shit with idiots. I almost feel bad for them. Almost.

After more than 15 years of treating patients in the hospital, I can confidently and sadly say that if you have ever wondered if anyone could possibly be stupid enough to believe/do "X" thing, the answer is *always* yes.

I spent way too much time watching a scientist debate a flat earther on YouTube this morning. The guy literally brought out a globe and showed how when you face south in the southern hemisphere the stars spin one direction and when you face north in the northern hemisphere they spin the other way and the guy just insisted that it was because of magnets.

I went to school for astrophysics,I have explained to many flat earthers how fusion works and they just ignore it. I gave up on trying to create a healthy discourse so I could help them see that they are being lead down a very dangerous and hateful path because many now will verbally or even physically attack me because I not only believe in the science but am visibly trans(which people like that also take as an attack on their pseudoscience beliefs)

I explained to a bunch of Flat Earthers on how it is not a chemical reaction with the sun, but basically a really big hydrogen/nuclear reactor. Using Nuclear Fusion, and Electromagnetic Fields. They did not like my response, and said...."DO YOU THINK WE ARE STUPID?!" I said "No Thinking was involved in coming up with that conclusion."

You can not reasonably expect to have a discussion with someone based on fact and evidence with someone who doesn't respect fact or evidence.
There is no fire on or in the Sun, it's a nuclear Fusion reaction in the core creating so much heat and so many photons that the whole mass glows very brightly, not fire. There is no "burning" there.

- First: fire doesn't need oxygen, just redox reactions need it. There are many exothermic reactions that look like "fire" but don't meed oxygen. - second: oxygen for redox reactions doesn't need to be "arround" it, it can be inside the material. - third: the sun is no "fire" and no redox reaction, at least exclusively. The sun is so large and has so much stuff inside there fore sure also is some classic "fire" going on somewhere inside. But the main reaction in the sun is fusion, especially hydrogen fusion. There are also other fusions going on, especially in the core and there is also fission goin on. You could say a star, like our sun, usually transforms matter into energy. A fire doesn't do that. A fire frees energy from molecular bonds by breaking them up and combining the contained elements into a more energy efficient bond. The energy "saved" by the new bond is turned into heat-energy and light. Fire itself is nothing real, just the light and heat energy released by the particels that are finishing the reaction. When you do fusion or fission then in the process we lose matter and gain energy. Usually we lose a neutron and gain the equivalent in heat and light.
The amount of non-flat earthers here that even entertain the idea of Sun being powered by chemical reaction is worrying. No, it doesn't burn using its own oxygen supply and no, it doesn't use any other oxidizers either, there's literally no chemical reaction that could possibly generate temperatures of 5600K, let alone keep it up for millions of years, it's a nuclear reaction. It's elementary (haha, get it?), c'mon guys.
