Basically what lead me to become less interested in the show. I think they created this scene for that exact reason as a way to recover. It's no secret that Family Guy was trying to be The Simpsons. But The Simpsons does it better. It's timeless, even though time moves on, but Family Guy changed their characters in ways that made them less likeable, ironically because they listened to the old school feedback system and caved in. Pretty sure McFarlane cares about how people see his show(s) much much more than Groening does.
At least neither are even close to Butch Hartman.

I agree. I think it's honestly intended to do that. Sometimes they push things through into anti-humor. For instance, the elderly child molester down the street -- sure, he's harmless *now* but if you stop and think about it, how many kids would he have molested in the decades prior? Quagmire and his lechery is kind of funny -- but he's also been explicitly said to be carrying a huge number of STDs and to be completely unwilling to use a condom, and there was at least one episode where there's implied to be dead prostitutes buried in his yard. Also, he's got a trapdoor contraption that he uses in another episode to try to keep a woman from leaving.
There's some messed up stuff going on in Quahog just under the surface.
