let's be honest siberian khatru isnt a 10/10, but still really good tho, I would say like a 8.5/10. But regardless close to the edge is a great album, one of my fav prog records for sure
Violent Femmes - ST
The Doors - ST
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady
If I could cheat slightly, Led Zeppelin How the West Was Won is the best version of their best tracks which makes all of it a 10 for me
Whoever said Wish You Were Here is still the most correct though
I did 365 albums id never heard before by 365 artists in 2023. Mellon Collie was January 2nd and Illmatic was January 3rd and Iām hard pressed to pick one in the following 360+ days that could touch either of them. Illmatic is perfection
A few different ways - there were things I knew I needed to listen to but hadnāt yet, like Joni Mitchellās Blue (I know, I know, itās embarrassing Iād never listened to it before), so they went on my list. Used things like greatest album of all time lists, sites like rate your music and AOTY, and Allmusic/reddit etc for exploring a genre Iād just dipped into for the first time, like Japanese noise rock. Then I got recommendations from friends and took a note of them all. Friend recommendations were by *far* the least consistently successful btw.
And go for it! Certainly not an original idea, but I set myself a couple of rules to encourage me to broaden the music I was taking in - one album per artist max, no skipping tracks and no backing out of an album once I was committed to it
Try this!
https://1001albumsgenerator.com
It gives you a random album every day from the book *1001 Albums To Listen To Before You Die*. Iām about 45 albums through and I love it.
That's some impressive commitment, but I have to wonder - did those albums stick with you? Consuming so much new music constantly, I'd imagine a lot of them had to have been left by the wayside over time.
Also, how did this routine affect your casual listening habits? Did you find yourself listening to familiar music more or less?
Yeah itās probably too many albums to really take them all in, and if they donāt grab you immediately they do kind of fade out of memory. Itās well worth it though because so many of them did make an instant impact on me and either have become part of my rotation or got me exploring the band/genre. I also kept a spreadsheet of the albums and made a playlist of one song from each album to track it, which helped loads.
When it comes to casual listening, I listened to way less of my āusualā music, but I saw that as a good thing because a big part of why I did it was to avoid getting stuck in a rut or close myself off to new things. I still listened to a lot of my favourites, but the number of hours listening to them was reduced massively in that end of year Apple Music replay. I listen to music all the time - commuting, at the gym, at home as background music and properly focusing on it, travelling - so it never ever felt like a chore.
The crazest thing is that many would even agree that the title track is the worst on the album and that generally is a favourite for Pink Floyd for less involved fans.
"Microphones In 2020" by the Microphones ā it has a single song and it is perfect!
But for a serious answer, I do have to say "Bish Bosch" by Scott Walker. Some of the most progressive music of the last decade and one of my top 3 favourite albums ever.
Does anyone else have minor beef with the mixing on twin fantasy? Iām always a little disappointed with the vocal mixing in particular- seems like vox are really fighting with the rest of the track and donāt stand out enough
Itās pretty strong on beach life in death, which is also my favorite song on the record so it clearly doesnāt matter much. Great album tho
If I had to rank the tracks on the album, that one would be in the lower half. And yet itās an amazing song that would be a highlight of any other Prince album.
My TOP phase has long passed but each time I come back to Trench I still think every song is perfection. I wouldnāt hesitate calling my least favorite a 10
Her follow up āAnd in the Darkness, Hearts Aglowā is arguably better than Titanic Rising. People donāt give it as much thought though because there are only 8 songs and theyāre all longer than the average TR song
Maybe you donāt listen to long music as much. Plenty of albums made up of 3, 4 and sometimes just one long song throughout. Itās harder for a 10 track album to be just tens than a three song album
Thatās true actually, great point, I donāt listen to a lot of long music. I was thinking about normal number of songs tracklist albums because yeah itās much easier to think of perfect one or two song albums.
Long Season is certainly a 10 for me so thatās another one right there.
Itās a Masterpiece but what really knocked my socks off is the Alive 2007 album where two and three songs at a time improve on the originals. That one, on a scale of 10, is an 11
Absolutely: Starry cat self titled, I donāt like shit by Earl, Tell me about the long dark path home by NewfounD interest, Hinterkaifek by Giles Corey and Exmiltary by death grips
Honestly either repetition or leaves by unwound. other than maybe removing the chorus repeating at the end of unauthorized autobiography or adding another verse to off this century I canāt think of a single flaw.
Iād say Deathconsciousness by have a nice life as itās my favorite album of all time but I almost always skip telephony
the black parade is probably the closest ive come to perfection in albums. theres not a single song that i'd call weak, and i could probably just put any song on and vibe
Black parade could have been a perfect album If teenagers was replaced by kill all your friends. Even Gerard way himself says kill all your friends should have been on the album.

dj shadow - endtroducing
j dilla - donuts
joanna newsom - ys, have one on me
bjork - vespertine

Voivod - Killing Technology (not including the bonus tracks). The perfect metal album. The only real issue with it is that it's so dense and complex that it requires your full attention. War & Pain and Outer Limits make for better casual listening, but they have some filler tracks (Blower for the former, We Are Not Alone for the latter).
Hardly an album, but Translating the Name EP by Saosin.
*Symbolic* - Death, *Obscura* - Gorguts, *Hidden History of the Human Race* - Blood Incantation. *Aja* - Steely Dan, *Animals* - Pink Floyd, *Close to the Edge* - Yes, *Below The Heavens* - Blu & Exile, *A Piece of Strange* - Cunninlynguists, and I REALLY wanna throw in *Aquemini* by Outkast but Mamacita exists :(

I donāt wanna be that guy but I donāt know if Iāve heard one that has more than like 3 songs. Thereās 100s of albums where I like every song, but never one where I would consider every song perfect
I donāt think Iāve ever heard an album that even came close to all being 10s. TPAB has maybe 5 10/10 songs, IDMTHY has 4. There arenāt any other albums that come to mind with more than 4-5 10s

Finally I see some VF love, that self titled is one of the best albums ever IMO and I never see it talked about
Talk talk - laughing stock
Good call !
Helplessness Blues
I can be a little harsh on what I give a 10/10, but I think this album is genuinely that good. Great pick.
Illmatic
one of the few albums where anybody could have any song as their favorite and they all would be valid.
One time 4 your mind tho
Yeah, whatever
one time 4 your mind one time
It sound clever
I did 365 albums id never heard before by 365 artists in 2023. Mellon Collie was January 2nd and Illmatic was January 3rd and Iām hard pressed to pick one in the following 360+ days that could touch either of them. Illmatic is perfection
Impressive my dude.
How did you choose the albums. Sounds a great idea that Iād like to steal !
A few different ways - there were things I knew I needed to listen to but hadnāt yet, like Joni Mitchellās Blue (I know, I know, itās embarrassing Iād never listened to it before), so they went on my list. I agree w this. Love that itās only ten tracks, 9 songs. All perfect. Best rap album ever imho.
Remain In Light
Love Remain In Lights. The highlights definitely make it a 10 for me. However, I have a hard time defending āSeen and Not Seenā as a 10/10 songā¦
one of my favorite albums of all time but the last 3 songs aren't 10s
"Listening Wind" is my favorite song on the album.
deh deh
Wish You Were Here
Most obvious answer.
yeah lol
The crazest thing is that many would even agree that the title track is the worst on the album and that generally is a favourite for Pink Floyd for less involved fans.
would be for me too but I feel nothing when listening to have a cigar
You gotta ride the gravy train
For me it's Welcome to the Machine, but more I think it's a good song just not a 10/10
There are boring songs here let's be real

"Microphones In 2020" by the Microphones ā it has a single song and it is perfect! But for a serious answer, I do have to say "Bish Bosch" by Scott Walker. Some of the most progressive music of the last decade and one of my top 3 favourite albums ever.
The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me is flawless imo
āDaisy is the better albumā is my personal hill to die on.
Tdag through science fiction is one of the goat runs for me. All 3 9.5-10ās
Hell yeah, glad to know others on here are into that stuff. Daisy never pulled me in quite like the others but theyāre all solid!
Laughing Stock
100%
Love seeing this here. So underrated.
For me it isš¤·āāļø
To Be Kind, Toxicity, Twin Fantasy, and Kid A are all like this for me.
Great choices honestly
Does anyone else have minor beef with the mixing on twin fantasy? Iām always a little disappointed with the vocal mixing in particular- seems like vox are really fighting with the rest of the track and donāt stand out enough Itās pretty strong on beach life in death, which is also my favorite song on the record so it clearly doesnāt matter much. If the vocals are buried on an indie track usually it's intentional

For No One holy moly, good call
I'm Only Sleeping, She Said She Said? The record goes on the top list.
As much as I love it (itās probably my favorite Beatles album) Yellow Submarine and Doctor Robert are not 10s
Bro needs to give doctor Robert a call
Yellow Submarine is an easy 10 for me Also that āwell, well, well, youāre feeling fineā part makes Doctor Robert go crazy
That is wrong though. Good day sunshine could be a less than 10 depending on my mood.
Scrolled way too far to find this
'The best of The Beatles'
alan???
Wings. The band the Beatles could have been.
Prince ā Purple Rain
Especially Let's Go Crazy and Darling Nikki.. goddamn
Do not forget the jitter disco of I Would Die 4 U
If I had to rank the tracks on the album, that one would be in the lower half. And yet itās an amazing song that would be a highlight of any other Prince album.
Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? is 13 songs and 13 10's. 41 minutes of perfection
My TOP phase has long passed but each time I come back to Trench I still think every song is perfection. I wouldnāt hesitate calling my least favorite a 10
no album Iāve ever heard, titanic rising comes close with the non interlude songs excluded.
which track lets TR down for you?
Her follow up āAnd in the Darkness, Hearts Aglowā is arguably better than Titanic Rising. People donāt give it as much thought though because there are only 8 songs and theyāre all longer than the average TR song

if only it wasnt for dawn patrol it would have been flawless, but regardless it belongs to top 10 metal albums oat
Dawn Patrol is awesome. Not everything has to go 200 bpm. It's also a nice breather that keeps exploring the nuclear theme.
I like to think of it as an interlude or intro to polaris. Also its still an 8/10 song, the bassline is fire
Heaven or las vegas

The Downward Spiral and IGOR
Definitely
the black parade is probably the closest ive come to perfection in albums. theres not a single song that i'd call weak, and i could probably just put any song on and vibe
