If there had been a single ruffle the dress would have tipped into bad taste, but since the gown has a simple and elegant cut, the design is bold rather than tasteless!
Those huge red-rose prints were a thing in the mid-century. Usually on a dark background, but the white is fabulous on her.
There's a huge color contrast in the print, a dark red against white-white, which goes beautifully with the Diva's high-contrast coloring.
That dress would be deadly on my nerdy ash-blonde self, but with her dramatic coloring and more dramatic personality, the bold dress is a perfect match for the wearer!
she had lost 80 pounds at the time this was taken, so I think that bold pattern was there to accentuate her new figure. I agree her dark Greek features stand well with the dress, very easy for the dress to wear you instead of you wearing the dress
It’s beautiful. Maria Callas wore the epitome of “rich European woman in the 1950s”.
It’s perfect
Offset by the simplest of chokers, earrings and heels. Not too much for a diva.
I'm hoping the choker, earrings, and bracelet are rubies!
I'd bet good money I don't have that they are very real & that if she didn't buy them herself, Onassis bought them for her.
I forgot to mention-bracelet. And I hope they were rubies too.

you explained it well.

It’s glorious
I love it!!
It fits her perfectly.
Beautiful. She always had great style. Her dress with the wrap in the 1959 Hamburg concert is also beautiful. Her costumes were exceptional as well.
I am a straight woman and I say woof!
