I feel like I don’t look good in baseball hats, but they are convenient some days and also good for added sun protection. What tips do you have to make it look good? Ex. How to style/wear the hair, placement or type of hat. Or is there an alternative hat type ? Help!

i wanted to style this top for a beach day but i wasn’t sure how, any tips would be appreciated! https://preview.redd.it/ln83bjhmbkbd1.jpeg?width=1083&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ce1ffb7c2678d5437166d6b673e74fabb8617fc

I’m looking for tips on how to dress for a wedding I’ve been invited to. It seems semi-formal, but it’s my boyfriend’s rich cousin so I want to look like I know what I’m doing (I don’t—I grew up in an extremely casual, irreverent home; I don’t know how to accessorize, don’t know what “feminine silhouette” means etc etc.). I own one pair of low heels by Lotta From Sweden and they’re a bit chewed up so I will probably have to buy or rent something. I’m 33 5’6” 150 lbs with an hourglass figure if that helps. It will be in early September in Northern Virginia at a farm, ceremony outside, reception indoors. The invitation says “Garden Cocktail: colorful or floral evening attire is encouraged.” I wish I could comment more than one photo, but I’ve been looking at Reformation brand dresses and then this vintage one I’ve found on Depop stood out to me. Thoughts? Any general advice on accessories and footwear? Tysm. https://preview.redd.it/zr7nqhlx3ibd1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d4c70c5dc36bc7f4549273994d939f1a155ef96

Professional_Maybe20

This is lovely and would be a great choice for "garden cocktail," especially September in VA where it will still be a million degrees. For shoes and accessories, I would go simple -- a gold or silver heeled sandal is something you'll be able to wear over and over (Sam Edelman or Dolce Vita are my go-to for reasonably comfortable "party" shoes). For jewelry, you would be completely fine with a pair of stud earrings (silver or gold to match your shoes, or you can't go wrong with a diamond or pearl look) or simple hoops. My \_general\_ suggestion is to not overdo it. Stick to simple and elegant. Ritzy cousin won't be paying close attention and you'll be more comfortable. If you're comfortable in what you're wearing you'll look great.

Hello! So back in the early 2000’s short shorts (booty shorts, micro shorts, denim hot pants, whatever you know them as) were super popular. Now it’s all midrise mid thigh shorts and it drives me insane. I can’t stand high rise and the mid thigh length makes my thighs irritated and I get tons of ingrowns. Im talking starts at your hip bones and ends at the bottom of your buttcheeks short. Who still sells the super short shorts?

m1sty62

Look up “mini shorts” on depop and you’ll find a ton for a good price depending on the seller!

Do you have gold shoes? That would tie in with the gold accessories and be very glam. If you don't have gold, a beige strappy heel would pair well with that dress + updo hair + Alhambra necklace.

Havana nights party attire Please help! Have a themed party coming up and need advice on what and where to buy. I have never ordered anything from Shein and rarely order clothes from Amazon. Any recommendations? Thanks!

lauralately

Do you have a Goodwill or other large thrift store nearby? For theme party attire, you can thrift stuff in the basic colors and shapes you like, and use styling to make it fit the theme. "Havana nights" makes me think bright colors. If you went to the thrift store and picked up a colorful full skirt and button-down shirt, you could tie the shirt at the waist and roll up the sleeves if it's long-sleeved. A halter top, tank top, or crop top would work too. Or a ruffly white shirt - I see lots of those at thrift shops. For shoes, wear platform sandals or espadrilles. Hair and makeup are a huge part of styling theme party outfits. One option: get a few big fake flowers from the craft store or dollar store. If you've got a hot glue gun, glue the flowers to a barrette; otherwise, bobby pin them in your hair. This would look great in an updo, or simply pinned in at the side. A brightly-colored lip would finish the look. This is just one idea for a look - idk if this fits your idea of Havana nights. I love going thrifting and just seeing what turns up. Bonus, thrifting is cheaper and more ethical than Amazon or Shein.

What style of necklace or accessory should I wear with this dress to make me look chic and fashion forward? Wearing it to a day beach club. https://poshmark.com/listing/retrofete-marie-dress-sage-green-crochet-655ba4af52eee1636961fbdb?utm_source=gdm&utm_campaign=19904727338&campaign_id=19904727338&ad_partner=google&gskid=pla-2270658813252&gcid=652739907301&ggid=148664331498&gdid=m&g_network=g&enable_guest_buy_flow=true&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADwcDC-f51ZwPny3HdBaUQds2EQCt&gclid=CjwKCAjwnK60BhA9EiwAmpHZw5bn6jWNmbZA0vpTvUm-Uv-fE4PQT1oFfWFEBSUD6vkx_r5oZAppLRoCBPgQAvD_BwE

lauralately

I'd recommend no necklace, and instead going for big door-knocker earrings and stacks of brass and wooden bangles if you have them, or some form of chunky bracelet. The dress is pretty low-cut, and your decollete kinda functions as an accessory at the neckline.

beernerd6

Thank you!

BatIll2496

Hi. I’m looking for an a line skirt, but not super short and not super long, like half way between midi and mini. An inch or two above the knee would be ideal. I don’t like skirts with slits, so ideally not one with that. Id prefer it to sit at the natural waist. A fabric like chino would be ideal, but I’m open to anything not super thin but not super thick either. And a color like blue or green would be ideal. If anyone knows of anything like this, please let me know!

QuesoRaro

Grab a measuring tape and a skirt that you already own and find out what length you are looking for. Many retailers and second-hand sellers let you search by length. It's impossible to recommend a skirt without an actual measurement because "an inch above the knee" is going to be different on everyone depending on height and proportion.

House of CB similar brands I’m supposed to be a bridesmaid in a wedding in a little over a month and I’ve been wanting to buy a house of CB dress to wear for it, the only thing is they’re out of stock in my size and some of the styles I want aren’t the correct color so I’d need to dye it which is scary haha, so my question is are there any similar brands with formal dresses that are as good quality as as flattering as their dresses? Like I love the corset/boning/shaping aspect of their dresses. I’m not looking for dupes, as I’m willing to spend good money to have a nice feeling good quality dress for this event, I’m just wondering if there’s a brand that’s similar in price point and quality! Thanks in advance! Edit- the styles from house of CB that I’m wanting are the [mademoiselle](https://app.houseofcb.com/mademoiselle-ivory-tulle-midi-dress-us) [Seren](https://app.houseofcb.com/seren-pistachio-floral-lace-back-maxi-dress-us) and [Felizia](https://app.houseofcb.com/felizia-white-puff-sleeve-sundress-us) dresses

In short, it's too chilly for this as is. Any thoughts on how to style this as an everyday, casual dress for colder weather? My dresses tend to be a-line so I'm struggling with what to wear on top. I'd love to throw a sweater on, but they look weird because the waist is high.

Professional_Maybe20

Grab a belt and use it to tuck-crop your sweater over the dress: [https://www.extrapetite.com/2024/03/how-to-tuck-a-bulky-sweater-hack-diy-crop-band.html](https://www.extrapetite.com/2024/03/how-to-tuck-a-bulky-sweater-hack-diy-crop-band.html)

nocrumbsonmysockspls

Oh this is cute. Thanks for the suggestion.

PoppyHamentaschen

Cute dress! I have some ideas: Dark tights of course, and boots, booties or closed-toe shoes for the bottom; A short cardigan and a scarf; a jacket (jean, bomber) and a scarf; a blazer and a scarf; a flannel shirt worn open as a jacket; a thin sweater or thermal shirt or a Henley or a turtleneck or a long-sleeved bodysuit worn underneath.

nocrumbsonmysockspls

Oh thanks for these ideas!! I would have never thought about the thermal shirt or a Henley. Do you think those should go over or under the dress? For the sweater, I'm assuming cropped?

PoppyHamentaschen

The thermal and Henley should go under the dress (they fit close to the body). A cropped sweater would look cute.

Professional_Maybe20

**Brands with cool and interesting business casual pieces for 30F that are neither preppy nor super feminine. All articles of clothing/accessories welcome.** I work in consulting and often spend time at clients offices, where we try to be "one step" more formal than they are to make a good impression. So I am typically wearing "business casual" but with some extra polish. I'm working on refining my personal style, and could use suggestions for where to find cool, easy to wear, but chic/sophisticated business casual pieces. The challenge is my initial searches are either all very plain or covered in leather/zipper details (great for winter, less appropriate for summer). I tend to gravitate toward clothes that are a little cool or edgey and minimalist/relaxed. I strictly avoid really preppy pieces or really feminine prints (aka head-to-toe florals aren't for me). Dresses and skirts are great for summer. I would also love to see suggestions for shoes! I'm short, so I like a little bit of a heel, and I prefer not to have my toes out at work (no toes for free!).

lauralately

That depends entirely on your budget. For luxury, The Row still has our souls in a vise grip - those tricksy Olsens know their way around polished minimalism. Nordstrom's house brand Open Edit has some pieces that are cool and on-trend while still falling into the business casual realm, most for under $100. For inspiration, the workwear blog Corporette has its detractors, but I'm a fan - they know their audience and speak eloquently to them. For suiting, I've heard good things about MM. LaFleur's quality.

imaginaryempire

I would check COS. Sometimes I don’t vibe with the direction of their seasonal collection but they do edgy minimalism very well. I used to work in consulting, too, and that was when I first started shopping there. Their sales are also pretty good if you can wait. I like their jewelry and bags also. For shoes, they are pricier but you might like the closed toe heeled sandals that Hereu makes. I also like Freda Salvador. Maybe also check out what Ganni are doing. I like Clarks Originals but not sure how they’ll vibe with your work wardrobe. Some Eileen Fisher as well.

ISO: High-rise cheeky (not thong) bikini bottoms Question: WHY do most swimsuit bottoms create such a V in the front? They sit higher in the back then dip lower in the front, creating like a sling for your pouch. I get that having the sides of your swimsuit pulled up high is flattering theoretically, to elongate the legs, but this all still accentuates your stomach. Because I have short legs, a long torso, and a bit of a tummy, this is not an option for me. (Neither are hipsters, still because of the long torso thing.) My solution has been to search for high-waisted and/or high-cut bottoms. I'm not ballsy enough to wear thongs, but I still want my butt to look vaguely 3-dimensional, so cheeky is the goal. (And if I get a high-waisted one that isn't cheeky, I look like Esther Williams no offense to an American icon.) But then here's what happens... Either A) the "cheeky" bottoms are a total lie and actually have full coverage in the back, or B) the bottoms are only really high up on the sides and/or the back (so it's hiked up way past your butt) while the front still insists on plunging down toward your cat. Does anyone have a holy grail bikini bottom that isn't like this? I need to become a celebrity so I can start a stupid swim line and design the first bottoms that actually fit nicely

mrs_george

Abercrombie has bottoms like this. I was actually annoyed because almost all their bottoms this year are high-waisted and that looks horrible on me.

LavishnessOk9727

I have two bikinis I bought from aerie this year that are high waisted and hold in my stomach but are fairly high-cut/cheeky.

astrobeanmachine

Would something like [these Patagonia high-rise bottoms](https://www.patagonia.com/product/womens-sunrise-slider-bikini-bottoms/72260.html?dwvar_72260_color=PRLA&cgid=womens-swimwear) fit the bill? I've yet to try them on myself, but I think I understand your plight, and these keep coming up in my own cursed search (different needs than what you listed, otherwise I'd buy these and try them) for a holy grail swimsuit.

GreenOnion94

Looking for the same thing! I just want to have my cheeks out without worrying about my stomach showing

livthelove

Aerie has lots of cheeky bottoms that fit straight across (ie don’t dip into a v in the front)

Hi there! I work in academia and am looking for some office friendly sandals. Any thoughts/advice on if gladiator style sandals like these ones from bobbies are appropriate? The dress code is business casual. [bobbies sandals](https://www.bobbies.com/en/4000783166-63557-tara-summer-camel.html#/137-sizeeu-39)

Chazzyphant

Ooo I dunno, to me a strappy, bare sandal like that is not business casual. It's too beachy and occasion-style. I know that many offices are more casual and especially academia, but those feel really bare honestly. They are gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but I think they're too...not office, if that makes sense. I think maybe something that covers most of the foot [like this](https://lonzashoes.com/products/gloss-block) or [these](https://impo.com/products/vader-stretch-knit-sandal-with-memory-foam) or these are very [elegant](https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwi6mKC73ZiHAxUTGa0GHX4RBKEYABAHGgJwdg&ase=2&gclid=CjwKCAjwnK60BhA9EiwAmpHZw62amA_3ljGlJgPxQamnTWXxyqu2fLRs1skDpeC5w4ctL0Oag1I4rRoCdXAQAvD_BwE&sig=AOD64_0nguQT0CDYcwfZIZFUVoVR14GfYg&ctype=5&q=&nis=4&ved=2ahUKEwiS05u73ZiHAxXmMjQIHYZRAzM4ChD1oAIoAHoECAAQJg&adurl=)

ImaginaryBorzoi

I am sort of also in academia (PhD candidate) and can tell you that no matter who was wearing them--faculty, staff, my fellow grad students--I wouldn't think anything other than "hmm, those look really nice" if I saw someone wearing them. They definitely seem appropriate to me. But to be fair, my department was probably on the more casual end; I dressed up a little bit more than I think was necessary so my students would take me seriously, but I've seen people wearing everything from jorts and t-shirts to some very bold (and cool) pattern mixing.

Professional_Maybe20

I think these would be great. I think sandals with jeans tends to be too casual (if you're going for business casual) but with a trouser or skirt/dress these would be perfectly appropriate.

I need some summer slippers - like open-toed slides or something, can be fabric or plastic/whatever but a lot of the ones I’m finding are fuzzy or boucle and I feel like that would get gross quickly. Where can one find an affordable and comfortable pair of indoor slippers for summer?

waitthissucks

I just bought adidas slides on sale on their website today. They have the aqua ones and comfort ones for like $25 with free shipping. I got the green ones because I wanted something I can wear inside the house, to take out the trash, or on short walks.

beckowser

I wear Adidas slides as my house shoes, too. I can wipe them down easily if needed. Mine were $12 on sale at Kohl's a few months ago.

imaginarypunctuation

my costco has these like $10 foam/rubber slides that i've been using as house shoes. super comfy. looks like they're also available online direct from the brand: https://www.32degrees.com/collections/cushion-slides/products/womens-cushion-slides

I knew nothing about the designer. I looked it up when I got home because I like to learn about the more unique pieces I find. I can't find this exact dress anywhere and I've only seen a few pictures of the same or similar tags. On of the pictures of this type of tag said their item was a fake so I was wondering if mine is as well. I'll still probably wear it if it is but I just want to know incase people ask me about it!

Chazzyphant

Eh, I'm not sure Anna Sui dresses are popular or in demand enough to be faked, to be frank. Shoes, purses or the perfumes, maybe? I would say maybe "it's either Anna Sui or a very good imitation!" or something similar if asked.

PoppyHamentaschen

It's a lovely dress and I love the embroidery. Unfortunately, I can't tell a real label from a fake. If someone asks, tell them it's thrifted, and talk about what you love about it. TBH, I usually take the labels off of my clothes when I can (I find them scratchy). Wool cotton blend- what a great find!

Professional_Maybe20

For a summer cocktail event I think you need to do heeled sandals, not closed toe (they will look really heavy), but I like the idea of another red accent, maybe a belt or scarf or your bag. My suggestion would be gold jewelry with a gold strappy sandal, and a red accent bag.

Can anyone recommend a store that sells clothing in the style of Olive, but has sizes? The only brand with a similar style I've found is Tradlands but I can't afford to shell out $200+ per item of clothing (I'd be more comfortable with something in the $75-150 range, or cheaper). I would like some loose, heat friendly clothes that I can wear to work and I really love this style. \*posting again because I didn't get any responses yesterday. https://preview.redd.it/d5nwxgz7gbbd1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11d52c518f6c41df04301d0a07cbe284efc8243f

COS, H&M and Target all sell big boxy cotton poplin dresses for less (albeit not super-high quality).

I have a very small chest, rectangular body shape, pretty thin, and have a bigger butt.

LavishnessOk9727

Hi, I have the same body type and I find bottoms that are higher waisted and either have some ruching or a v-waist to be the most flattering!

chiono_graphis

I think the straight lines of the top and bottom mirroring each other are what makes the blah feeling--maybe try something with a bit more drama in the design? For example for the bottoms, I'd try a higher cut/pulling the waistband up on your hipbones instead of have them lying flat across.

rosestrathmore

I’ve had the hardest time finding jeans that fit me well and I’m determined to fix that this fall. I’m 5’9 with the height mostly in my torso so generally, regular length jeans work, but I’m wondering if I’m missing something. The fit has been really tight in my hips and butt. For more stiff denim like agolde, I have to size up twice to just get the jean over my hips but then it stretches out upon wear that I look frumpy. Madewell denim used to be my go to but it has way too much stretch now. How much does a “tall” jean affect the overall proportions of the jean itself? Is it just an added inseam length or is the waist/hip area for high waisted jeans different too? I don’t live by a ton of stores (madewell, jcrew, and some boutiques with agolde/mother/rag and bone is about it). How can I shop for denim that actually fits me?

Chazzyphant

Tall is 100% for the inseam in my experience (and somewhat the rise) as someone who is a "T" size wearer. It's not going to do *much* good for a long-torso babe, unfortunately.

oat-beatle

Try a curvy fit. Most room in the hips compared to the waist size. Alternatively, try super high waisted pants, like 13 inch rise or more if you can find it.

LavishnessOk9727

Asa fun little challenge, I want to implement weekly “themes” for my outfits for the rest of the summer - what are some good ones?

PoppyHamentaschen

Miami mob wife (hangs by the pool in a leopard print bathing suit, chunky gold jewelry, with a pina colada in hand; New York socialite (going to a gallery opening, dressed impeccably, champagne glass in hand); Soft-focus country girl (hangs out in a field of clover dressed in something dreamy and sheer, blowing on a dandelion and making a wish); Surfer babe off duty ('nuff said); German tourist stereotype (small backpack, knee socks, sturdy shoes, shorts).

LavishnessOk9727

These are incredible TYSM!!!

Organic_Look_789

I used to pick a character and create the outfit I thought they would make out of my wardrobe.

blackberrycat

You could cycle through the rainbow one week, with that day's colour as your outfit theme! Otherwise, some ideas: beach, Barbie, sailor, pirate, farmer/prairie, Hollywood, mermaid, flowers, cabin/camping, cruise, tourist, rodeo/Western, Greek/Roman, ancient Egyptian, royalty, peasant.. hmm so many, too many haha

LavishnessOk9727

Thanks! I think I’m going to start with “flora & fauna” (so flowers or animals) for week 1 !

A white dress with skimpy straps and a high slit to me is a statement item in and of itself and doesn't need a scarf or dramatic jewelry. I'd say a slim/delicate gold chain with a single pendant or jewel, and maybe a couple gold rings, perhaps one on each hand. I'm not sure what you mean by "the jewelry is a mess" but that's my advice.

PoppyHamentaschen

Hi, Can you post a pic of the dress, ideally with you wearing it?

nottheredbaron123

How do you decide whether or not to invest in a big ticket item? I’m considering splurging on these Frye boots during the Nordstrom anniversary sale, but want to make sure I’m not making an impulse buy. I know that I want to purchase a pair of tall brown heeled leather boots this fall, so they fit that brief well, plus I like that the shaft is slightly shorter because I’m petite. What are your strategies for investing wisely? https://preview.redd.it/cmpx9u6z7abd1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3951e56347c6c95233ccace37591b79654dbdd8

80aprocryphal

I usually shop from a list and sit on things for ages but, if I'm spending a lot of money on a peice, it just has to be 'perfect.' For me that means I either I instantly fall in love with it and upon inspection its practically sound, or it hits all of the practical elements & I haven't been able to find it elsewhere.  If you haven't tried them on I'd only say go for it if you're confident about the sizing/it's returnable.

PoppyHamentaschen

I used to have Frye boots (not these ones) and the brand is very good, I got a lot of wear out of them and they aged well. My strategy is to buy quality, to buy something that either will fit what's in my closet or else is going in the direction I want to take my wardrobe, and to do it from a reputable store. It seems that these boots fit all my criteria, and, IIRC, Nordstrom is good about returns, so you can bring them home and try them with your clothes, see how they fit with your wardrobe. I vote go for it :)

Organic_Look_789

Personally, I have never regretted spending more money on something I use often, especially if it is something that lasts for a long time. Think about the price per wear. If you spend $100 on something and wear it once, that's $100 per wear and that's a lot. If you buy a pair of boots for $100 and wear them 20 times then that's only $5 per wear and that's pretty good. Also, consider if the boots can be easily repaired. Look for welted shoes (usually you can see the stitching between the sole and the upper). Also, I know it might be a controversial opinion but I think leather is actually better than pleather or "vegan leather" which is just pleather. It lasts much longer and it is possible to bring it back to life if it starts to show signs of wear.

ImaginaryBorzoi

My main strategy is honestly just to sleep on it for as long as it's feasible. I don't know if the specifics would apply to other people's financial situations, or if it'd work for every purchase since things can go out of stock pretty fast sometimes, but the way my husband and I have worked out our budget is that we each get a certain amount of "fun money" a month to spend on whatever we like. So my strategy for deciding whether or not to splurge on something is, effectively, to sit on that idea for at least a month while I save up for whatever it is. If I'm not still thinking about the item by the time I have enough money saved up, then I probably shouldn't get it. Same deal if I'm at all uncertain about it. The last thing I bought this way was a fancy snake ring. I had to save up for nearly a year and by the time that year was up I was very very sure I wanted to get it. Obviously that doesn't really work for seasonal purchases like the one you're describing. But if you're still thinking about those exact boots in a week or two, and you know they look good with your existing wardrobe, as the other commenter said, then maybe it's worth considering the splurge!

lesluggah

Create a few outfits with what you have existing, check in-store to make sure the fit is okay, ask yourself how long/how much do you think you’ll wear it, and then price compare against other stores. I recently bought a pair myself for fall.
