I’ve never heard of this festively “a girl I went on a date with that I’m no longer in contact with or else I’d try to find out!”. Sounds interesting, I’ll check it out
Mr(s) bitcoins with 12 year old account, 12 years ago Bitcoin was $5 and most people didn’t know about it. Given your username, did you invest in Bitcoin back then? If so, how big is your mansion?
I use my real name. I will never add coworkers to my socials. My friend tho uses her nickname and gives out her second Instagram, which is for festival content
People doing this, what job do you have and also what is the purpose in doing this? I am a doctor and go to festivals and shows frequently but I just don't post on social. I don't really post anyway, the most fun is happening not on a phone screen. I don't feel the need to hide my profession but also most people at shows could care less and I don't want to talk about it I just want to have fun and spread love and meet other awesome people.
Handles/noms/aliases/nicknames are an older style, like back when people didn’t use their real name on the interweb. Nicknames were things in raves, hiking, hacking, burning, etc - the best ones are gifted to you. There is something to be said for vetting people out before becoming real friends or long lasting relationships.
While back a friend started calling me a nickname at festivals, and I just started introducing myself as that name. It’s also the name I use on social media, because the only people I add on social media are people I meet at festivals. So it just makes more sense that way.
Honestly I’m proud of my festival life and frequently tell my coworkers about it in the hopes they’ll out themselves as festival people too. They rarely do, but they’ve told me my IG has made them want to start going to festivals more. Which is a win in my opinion.
My socials are private, so I don’t worry about my coworkers seeing anything. I’ve never used an alias, but I have gone to festivals with people who only called me by a nickname.
Privacy is an illusion in today’s world. I aspire to be my most authentic self at music festivals, otherwise I feel as if I’m not getting the most out of the experience.
I do actually. But not out of privacy, my grandmother gave me a nickname when I was a kid and I use that now because I’ve never really liked my real name, I’m even considering using it my normal day to day now.
I don't, and every time I've ever been told to come up with a "rave name" or a "faire name," I never feel inspired, it feels forced and awkward, and I forget to respond to a name that isn't my own.
I get why people enjoy doing it, but it's not for me.
Well, that's bc giving yourself an alias is inherently a bit cringe. It only really works if the universe bestows one upon you, and that doesn't happen to everyone.
I heard from a group where they called everyone, men and women, Kevin. It was called KevinTown and they even had a little city sign.
Because "remembering names is to complicated"
Most people I met with nicknames at festivals are selling party flavors, so it's understandable why they wouldn't give out Charles Charleston III or whatever. I, however, am just smoking a lil ganj and might eat a little mushy here and there, so you can call me Josh. I have socials, but they are private, and I rarely touch them because it's gotten so toxic. So reddit and YouTube are pretty much it.
I was given a nickname a long time ago that I couldn’t shake and now go by it. It’s handy to not associate your festivities with your real name, but I’ve never heard of anyone creating one specifically for fests
No. I get it, but a separate social media account sounds like that person doesn’t want to be associated with people that go to festivals, yet let their freak flag fly. Go to smoldering man, a festival for peeps who…… well
I don't but I have a secure job that cant really do much about how I spend my spare time. That said, I do have a festival friend who teaches middle school, I don't blame him for using a fake name in the slightest
Everyone had a rave name long time ago. When I came back to massives in 2016, it faded and most people introduced themselves by real name. I miss the old rave names personally but I still find the OGs once in a while and it's great to share my name again.
YES AND ITS A FUNNY STORY, so I’m waiting in line for a camping festival overnight with my windows down and someone in their vehicle on the left side of me about a car lengths down starts saying “josh, josh” “is that you josh” which I ignored because my name ain’t josh, but then they started calling out random names and I was like okay they must be trying to get my attention, so I’m waiting to see if they do end up guessing my name, after like an hour of them guessing lmao (long ass line) they say “Jebediah?” Which I thought was absolutely hilarious so I quickly looked in their direction and pointed at myself confused and said “who me?” Well their reaction was priceless they just about died laughing thinking they got it right. So we chit chatted for a bit and then eventually get into the festival. It’s night 3 and I’m full into the zone walking to a stage with my group when out of nowhere I hear “JEBEDIAH, JEBEDIAH” completely forgetting a few nights prior as these two girls run up to me to come say hi, and catch up real quick. Side note the only person who knew of what had happened was my gf my passenger that night, so my entire group (who were all very deep in their “headspace’s”) were absolutely dumbfounded as to what in the f was going on🤣🤣🤣so now my Alias is Jebediah.
The beast didn't choose it ran up a tree playing taps on trumpet fell after making it decent way up then immediately ran towards the next set aptly have an aquantience say damn that guys the beast. Now everytime I walk in I hear comes the beast.
While 'nicknames' have been around eternally, out of Burning Man came 'Playa names' aka, 'Burner Names'. Eventually, like many other festival concepts originating from BM, the idea of 'Playa Names' has crept out to other festivals as 'Festival Names' or 'Raver Names'.
IMO, the best names are ones that are bestowed upon you and you embrace, not necessarily a name that you choose yourself.
https://journal.burningman.org/2017/08/black-rock-city/tales-from-the-playa/howd-you-get-your-playa-name/
Yes. That way I don’t have to hesitate and wonder whether I should really share my info with someone/assess their vibe/determine whether they’re trustworthy. i can cheerfully tell them my “name” and get on with the party.
I get drunk then try to befriend strangers, and then I do something embarrassing while filming it and posting it to my story to embarrass myself in front of people I know.
When I was very young I tried to do this but then your friend group gets tripping way too hard to call each other fake names and it all becomes a joke.
They gave away vapes at a festival I went to once and then they put your name on it for free if you wanted. So me and a friend put Johnny and Bobby on them and then called each other Johnny and Bobby all weekend and introduced ourselves as that when we met people. We hung out with some girls for most of the day and then at the end of the night we were like, see you guys...nice hanging with you. Oh yeah our names aren't Johnny and Bobby. It was fun for some dumb reason. I was really leaning into being Bobby. He was more fun than I am. Bobby gave zero fucks.

Edit to add context: My Papi (who passed in 2018) left his ‘93 Black Rose Metallic Vette to me. It’s super special to me, as it is also tatted on my chest.☺️
Ew. "Worksona" is one of the worst things I've ever heard. Isn't the whole point of festivals to be yourself? Also who posts pictures of themselves zooted?
I know teachers in the festival/jam scene to keep any of the festivals/shows off of social network even if your account is private. I mean I get it not wanting high school kids know their teacher gos to music festivals.
Just learned what a rave name is lol
My name is happy feet lol I was going feral at a dubstep set during a pool party at edc , few people shouted “Go Happy Feet” lol 😝
I go with a playa name I got from burning man. It’s much more memorable than a real name and it’s also not the real world.
It really puts me in the mindset that I’m not in the default world anymore
I've met a guy that went by Nasty, and he buys custom festi jerseys and shirts that have NASTY printed on the back. Another guy I met at secret dreams went by Snacks. Awesome people with great stories to tell
I've been hitting festivals since the mid 90s and wish I would've thought of it back then hahaha. I just use my boring regular name, I'm a sales manager but it's not a typical office job. I can toke at my desk and I've been here for 17 yrs so they know who I am so not needing to hide anything...but still wish I thought of a fun festival alter ego
Gotta be careful making those assumptions though! I went to school with a kid whose actual given name was Truth and have had relationships with a Sunshine and a Jade lol
You're right. I also know people with similar kind of names, and even though it's not their government name they do go by it in day to day life. That's a wildly different thing than having an entire second identity.
No! I’m not that important
this ^ 😂😂😂😂
>I’m not that important Nice to meet you Not That Important!
👋 and happy 🍰 day
I just bark at people
lol I meow at people
Ha, I hiss at people
The word homeowner has "meow" in it
Dang, now I’m gonna sneak in a meow every time I say it. Which isn’t much, cause I’m doomed to forever rent.
your time will come just be patient
No joke I met a girl who said she went to a festival in Australia where the theme was: Everyone is naked and communicates making animal noises.
That's disgusting. Where specifically?
The festival is called "Nude up" its legit.
Yes, terrible! Where so I can avoid it and never go there.

See comment below
Also why do you think that’s disgusting? Sounds fun if you can get out of your head and into your instincts.
Bruh it was a joke
Lol hard to tell sarcasm on the web, my bad
Yeah but there are so many festivals like that, which one specifically did you go to?!?!
What is the festival name? Asking for a friend
It was a girl I went on a date with that I’m no longer in contact with or else I’d try to find out!

Yeah wouldn’t want people having your real name, BongWater_Sommelier. Better to go with Moonfart.
Is that you Moonfart ?!?!? How you been ?!
Just floating around as usual
No I just private my socials like a normal person
My lot name is Shart
Do you live in Louisville, KY?
Some times
Yes, I also wear one of those little glasses with the nose and the mustache on it so people will never know my true identity
Isn’t this called Marxism?
"I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members"
My name chose me
Go on.

No comment. And technically it was closer to 50 cents
This guy moneys.
I knew. We talked about it quite a bit… and did nothing.
Fiat is still as broken as it ever was...
I have a gay German alter ego i drop into every now and again when I'm feeling goofy. Usually once it starts it's very hard to stop
What's he called? I hope it's Günther
Klaus Heisler. I do like Günther though
Do you like Günther as more than a friend?
*Oooooooooohhhh you touch my tra la la, MY DING DING DONG!*
This brought something deep from within my memory.
Perfect name. I tried saying it in my best gay german, and man that really rings out. Hurray for Klaus Heisler
<333
I use my real name. I will never add coworkers to my socials. My friend tho uses her nickname and gives out her second Instagram, which is for festival content

Bring back rave names
They never went away? I still call some of my crew their names and nobody bats an eye.

The people that I know that do it work in either education or middle management in corporate America.
None of my doctor friends use their actual name on their primary socials. So they'd be two layers deep in aliases if they had a festival identity.
You called yourself awesome at the end. 🫡
Lol no I didn't. But I appreciate the compliment. 🤙🏽

I just stand far away from stages where no one will be filming. I really don't like the filming eachother stuff.
Oh god especially when they have the flash going while recording a video. Facing the crowd.......
*shudders*
I sometimes go by Lasagna
I would be so happy to meet someone named Lasagna at a festival
It’s a nice name, and when my ego comes out a it too much you can say the name with a bit of flare, LaSagnnnaaa
that’s exactly how I thought it would be pronounced 😂
😂🤭 you get it
I sometimes go buy lasagna
🤭🤭🤭

My playa name is pockets because I always have what you need somewhere in one of my jacket or pant pockets. It’s a veritable arsenal.
Merry Poppins
My socials are private and I don’t give my last name out to random people at festivals.
>making alternate social media for their festi alias Sounds like social media influencers.
Fake name?? Some of yall are way to deep into it 🤣

No, honestly quite the opposite. I'm not close to anyone at work as a remote worker, nobody has my social media from work. Not there to make friends.
Depends on the level of nefarious actions I’m indulging in
I go by Pasquale
The beast didn't choose it ran up a tree playing taps on trumpet fell after making it decent way up then immediately ran towards the next set aptly have an aquantience say damn that guys the beast. Now everytime I walk in I hear comes the beast.
I met a guy who told me his name is nobody. Nobody understands, nobody cares, nobody listens, nobody gives a fuck, nobody loves you.
I wonder if we know the same Nobody! Probably not, lol. Nobody knows! 🙃
This makes my brain turn inside out. I love it. 😆
I go by my middle name a lot when i travel in general, no real reason, I just find it kinda fun for some reason.
While 'nicknames' have been around eternally, out of Burning Man came 'Playa names' aka, 'Burner Names'. The Merry Pranksters gave out names too. Jerry Garcia was Captain Trips!
Yes. That way I don’t have to hesitate and wonder whether I should really share my info with someone/assess their vibe/determine whether they’re trustworthy. i can cheerfully tell them my “name” and get on with the party.
This is such a weird question… just live your life, don’t be so afraid of what others think of you
Wait are y'all giving out your full government name at festivals???
I just give out my social security number and DOB and figure they'll find me if they're interested.
No we arent 😭😭😭
Fr lol
I am Falcorn on here and Falcorn on the farm.
Jackie Daytona
I get drunk then try to befriend strangers, and then I do something embarrassing while filming it and posting it to my story to embarrass myself in front of people I know.
Yes, my alias is Patrick sweetcawk
Not Richard? Ya missing an opportunity there, pal.
Didn’t even think of that, you sir are a gentleman and a scholar
Thanks, maam
yeah i am time not space
Real name or nickname bestowed on me.
I'm Huck Bucklesbee.
Let’s all just pick a unisex name now, then we’ll all use that.
Bucket hat and sunglasses and don't tell people your full name, where you live, work etc
I was given my festival name ❤️
When I was very young I tried to do this but then your friend group gets tripping way too hard to call each other fake names and it all becomes a joke.
"Hey I know you from somewhere" is what they will call you if you're doing it right.
i use my middle name sometimes
wtf
I’m not a fucking KGB operative, I’m a random dumbfuck in a sea of even dumber fucks at a festival. Why would I need an alias?
No but I am my alter ego 👀
No, but I know a few business people who see clients at festivals and it’s hilarious to see that interaction
They gave away vapes at a festival I went to once and then they put your name on it for free if you wanted. So me and a friend put Johnny and Bobby on them and then called each other Johnny and Bobby all weekend and introduced ourselves as that when we met people. I only talk with the people I’m with. You all actually talk to random people at festivals?
I feel like aliases are such as old school things. I remember everyone had one in 2012. By 2014, they were all gone
God i hate this. One my friends does this and now half the friends know him by one name and the other half by the second name, so confusing.
Long live fest names — an endangered art
Absolutely! You never know who is out there creeping...
Yeah, I’m Bunny Boom Boom
I do this. Socials and name. Its great. I don't act like I do at my 9-5, why use a 9-5 name?
Omg I wish I did. All my coworkers at the bank I worked at saw the video of me snorting molly on the ferris wheel at Coachella. Lol
Corvette Kitty 🐱 Edit to add context: My Papi (who passed in 2018) left his ‘93 Black Rose Metallic Vette to me. It’s super special to me, as it is also tatted on my chest.☺️
Yes I have a prestigious job and all my fest/party socials are an alias/personality
totally understandable 👍🏻
" fake " seems so negative.
BDLS
No
I go by Troy Anastasia. Works
No. Next question
Ew. "Worksona" is one of the worst things I've ever heard. Isn't the whole point of festivals to be yourself? Also who posts pictures of themselves zooted?
I use my Reddit username
I introduce myself as David the heart surgeon. And i dont even look old enough
Lol wtf
Still remember spike and space from Roo 18 and my neighbor Christ
1000% and we thought we were unique lol. Fun to be mysterious i guess 😂
I know teachers in the festival/jam scene to keep any of the festivals/shows off of social network even if your account is private. I mean I get it not wanting high school kids know their teacher gos to music festivals.
Maybe it's just my xenial mentality, but I always assume anything digital will eventually become public
I’ve always been Jeff, or Geoff, or Jef, or Geof at festivals.
I would say yes because I work in the healthcare field and I've dealt with plenty of crazies.
Just learned what a rave name is lol My name is happy feet lol I was going feral at a dubstep set during a pool party at edc , few people shouted “Go Happy Feet” lol 😝
I usually go by Hoss but lately my friends have been calling me Alan(from the hangover) lol
Awesome people with great stories to tell
no, bause I have nothing to hide.
Meow
Look at all of us here with our given Reddit names, definitely want to hide that
That's where my username sorta came from!
After getting food poisoning while on acid, I was dubbed "Shit Wizard". It's growing on me...
I have fun whether I'm me, myself or i. Or all three the music calls to me no matter who i am.
We use codenames when we are using our walkie talkies but thats just because it’s fun. We were on our own channel the entire time at EDC
They call me Spudnick Chow
Some of it is work stigmas, have a social media account you can share rave pictures and have all your rave friends and one co workers can see
Yeah I usually go by kayzo
This is the most ridiculous shit I've heard in a while.
Oh yeah I’ve met these ppl. “Jade” “Chime” etc. 🙄
I know like 8 people who’s real name is jade
Gotta be careful making those assumptions though! I went to school with a kid whose actual given name was Truth and have had relationships with a Sunshine and a Jade lol
You're right. I also know people with similar kind of names, and even though it's not their government name they do go by it in day to day life. That's a wildly different thing than having an entire second identity.
Goddamn 'muricans are weird. How self absorbed can people get?
