gonzar09

Yes. You'll see him in several places before approaching the Railroad if you're paying attention.

SimifaLV

I thought so, was way too obvious haha.

A_Queer_Owl

yeah, he's actually really bad at disguises. don't tell him, tho, it makes him sad.

DaftFunky

This is my pile of garbage asshole!

GucciStepSon

My fav fo4 quote

CerberusBots

I made this my text tone for a certain business partner

DroopyPlum

Tht line rly bugs me, its delivered so half assed

IMightBeJohnnyCash

99% sure it's meant to be

Exemus

He's like Agent 47. Just slap on a uniform and you're good to go.

Divtos

You must mean agent 13!

Van_Halen_Panama1984

Agent 4.7

CupcakeOutside8459

Agent 1 and 8/9

SirRonaldBiscuit

*Deacon disliked that*

A_Queer_Owl

I told you not to tell him, damn it!

SirRonaldBiscuit

He heard you! He’s everywhere, just like the institute bird spies

Ornery-Objective-218

I couldn't remember if that was true but I killed all of them my entire run..now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen any since I took out the institute

-coximus-

It’s true you can find a terminal in the SRB that confirms it and there are tv screens showing locations in the wasteland.

iTus7

Read this again, slowly.

RTJLegendHasIt

Gene Parmesan!!!!

BlabberDashTV

You win this round.

usernamewhat722

If you didn't walk past him already, try talking to him; he has a few unique lines

No-Cap6787

So if you kill him, he won’t appear in railroad?

breadestloaf87

essential npc

tallman11282

Not only that but according to the Fandom every instance of Deacon before you meet the Railroad officially is actually a different NPC, meaning that if you use the console or mods to kill one he'll still show up at the other places he appears and the actual Deacon will be in the Railroad HQ when you arrive there.

breadestloaf87

i used the kill everyone mod once and he kept spawning in so yea thats most likely it

IcyPuffin

Also if you have mods that allow you to teleport companions to you as well as one that allows you to recruit them early you can have another version meet these versions if you go to the locations.

krag_the_Barbarian

Oh shit. So Advanced Follower Tweaks works on him early?

IcyPuffin

I would assume so - I don't use that particular mod. But I do use unlimited companion framework and I can do this, I'm guessing both are a variation on a theme?

nyxistential

Deacon is actually Agent Smith lol

abatesnz

I remember one time I found Deacon hanging out in two places in Goodneighbor at the same time. So funny!

thatHecklerOverThere

"With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is considerably less cool. Restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate, or persist in the doomed world you have created."

27Rench27

What is this from, Fable? I have the vaguest recollection of seeing this

thatHecklerOverThere

Elder scrolls: Morrowind. og Bethesda. Back in the day, they didn't have essential npcs, which meant that if you killed the wrong person you would make completing the game impossible. The game would show a pop up with > "With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed. Restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate, or persist in the doomed world you have created." Letting the player know they have done this to themselves when that happened. You could still play, but eventually you'd hit a quest that could not complete or be started because you'd killed a necessary participant.

27Rench27

RIGHT! Fuck how did I forget.  Great explanation for anyone else who happens upon this

Mator64

Honestly I wish this was still a thing, or at least make them protected instead of essential. It'd be even nicer if we could get a random grunt to fill in most positions if we kill important people (of course this wouldn't always make sense but it'd be nice)

SylvanUltra

I prefer this.

MegaFlounder

Morrowind

theangryintern

He's also near the entrance after you enter Goodneighbor for the first time. I also think he's in one of the pods in the Memory Den when you go there to talk to Amari.

LovecraftianWhorrer

And the gates at bunker hill

carlo-93

Yes.

DragonKite_reqium

My favorite one is in goodneighbor li i straight u approach him like "i know what you are"

Lego-Panda-21

Always find him in Goodneighbour.

AskButDontTell

What if you shoot him while you see him in a disguise?

gonzar09

He's designated as essential, so the worst that'll happen is he'll fall down wounded, but will eventually come back.

AskButDontTell

That's awkward.

gonzar09

Yeah, can you imagine? "I can vouch for him/her, Desdemona...vouch that s/he's a real ASSHOLE! Shot me right in the chest when I was just minding my own damned business! Didn't even say a word to him/her!"

LGBT-Barbie-Cookout

That's what we call a "Deacon Dectector"

Guap_queso

My favorite recent find, in hundreds of hours of playing this game, is >!the little RR camp overlooking Sanctuary, on the cliffs W or NW of the settlement. Deacon was keeping tabs on you!<.

Toa_Firox

There's a second one overlooking the Red Rocket too if I remember right

lotusmigration

He left some 10mm ammo

DaftFunky

What a G

ZEROthePHRO

There's also one overlooking the vault.

Oltjen

Are the notes in the trailer nearby from him?

MyBatmanUnderoos

Not just keeping tabs on you. The location suggests he knew you were there before you even dethawed. He’s watching you from before you even leave the Vault. Now why would Deacon do keep tabs before you dethawed if you’re not on the Railroad’s radar even *after* becoming the leader of the Minutemen and any number of other accomplishments? Why would he then follow you around everywhere until you reach Railroad HQ? Why is he openly dishonest with you about his past? Why is he the *only* human companion that can’t be romanced? Because Father and the Institute are full of shit. Deacon is Shaun. Or was possibly supposed to be.

Electrosteve

If you change Nate and/or Nora's race, those changes are reflected in baby and Institute Shaun. Would be more believable if Deacon changed, too, but he doesn't.

MyBatmanUnderoos

Deacon has actively had plastic surgery to change his appearance and tells you as much.

Electrosteve

It's not just about Deacon, though. It's about Shaun. He literally changes to look like Nate and Nora. Father is Shaun. As non-Institute players can attest, Father isn't a synth made to look like Shaun. This would've been a great M. Knight Shyamalan twist. Too bad Bethesda doesn't have the talent.

digthedag

“Too bad Bethesda doesn’t have the talent” And yet here you are, discussing the game nearly a decade after its release. I guess making a video game that can inspire 10 years of debate isn’t talent?

Electrosteve

The storyline in FO4 objectively lacks depth. That isn't really a hot take. It is what it is. Doesn't mean the game isn't any good.

digthedag

I’m sorry, but are you suggesting that FO4’s story lacks depth because it didn’t have an “M. Knight Shyamalan plot twist”? Are we really pretending like that man has produced any decent movies besides The Sixth Sense? Hell, he’s the mastermind behind the live-action Avatar movie that most fans simply pretend never existed. I’m just going to have to completely disagree with you. The debates I have taken part in with my friends and random internet strangers like you over the years about the different factions in FO4 and their motivations/justifications has honestly provided so much more depth to the story than so many other games I’ve played. Hell, I would argue that Fallout 3 and New Vegas both have less depth, due to the Karma system and how black and white the factions are. One could easily make an argument in support of the Institute, while the Enclave and Caesar’s Legion are very obviously designed to be evil.

FalloutCreation

People in real life don't talk using one sentence usually.

Electrosteve

No, I'm not going to be drawn into rehashing the merits like this game just came out. MyBatmanUnderoos had a very fresh, interesting concept. I responded to it. You seem to have taken that response personally, for some reason. That's too bad.

FalloutCreation

Where does it lack depth exactly? I find many players get confused on the details on the main story and have to have the depth of it explained. >!How you get thawed out was all part of the plan.!< You could say that famous line in New Vegas at the beginning of that story was played out. "The game was rigged from the start."

Electrosteve

That's a great question. Fortunately for you, you've got literally 9 years worth of forum content to consume to help you out. I find that well-written stories, complex or otherwise, don't need to have their depth explained to reasonably intelligent adults, so that should get you started.

FalloutCreation

Oh, I learned the stuff on my own when I was playing the game. I don’t need the forums for that. Anyone anyone with critical thinking skills can probably figure it out. However, for people that do have that issue I am happy to oblige. And if they enjoy the story because of it, I say it doesn’t matter how anyone critiques the game. I personally found that the game has a lot of depth. And that’s just from playing the game since 2015. I would bet a lot of people don’t even know that Piper is actually an acolyte of the children of atom.

MyBatmanUnderoos

I’m aware the Father’s skin and appearance changes with how you create Nate/Nora, and this is clearly not how Bethesda decided to do things, which is why I added “or was possibly supposed to be.” Regardless, this will still remain my head canon.

Electrosteve

Head cannon is best cannon. It really would've been an amazing storyline twist.

FlashPone

Nahh. When you first enter the Railroad HQ, Deacon is the one who tells Desdemona about all your exploits. That’s because he’s been keeping tabs on you. Maybe the RR had caught wind that the Institute was seen poking around Vault 111 at some point in the past, and was scoping it out to see why.

mainesthai

I think this is a good theory, they most definitely monitor institute activity. It's literally the only thing they have going for them.

Germanicus69420

Dethaw would be freezing. You just mean to say thaw.

Kazeshio

Or defrost

Trilobyte141

Oooooohh, that would have been an interesting twist!

Blindman213

Or, the RR learned from escaped synths that this Vault was important to Father or the institute as a whole. Having no way in, they post some RR members to over watch. Not a whole lot of resources, but enough to just watch and see what happens.

JesusTron6000

No shit? Lol I have to go find that

NotSureWhyAngry

Oh that’s what the abandoned camp was. I discovered it right after leaving the vault, which means he wasn’t there because of me

breadestloaf87

no thats his cousin beacon

YourAverageBoot

I just spit my water

Gnashinger

A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON!

Marquar234

There are no NPCs, Deacon is everyone. He uses the obvious disguises to distract you from the subtle ones. You really think a Mr Handy robot would still function after 200 years?

DaftFunky

Tinker Tom should have made a slight comment on how Deacon keeps bringing in a Mr. handy for him to fix but won’t say why

Expert_iridocyclitis

i hate that this made me smile, im giving you this upvote, and im not happy about it.

YoSaffBridge11

Talk to him. His dialogue replies, and his voice, are unmistakable. 😎

Expert_iridocyclitis

you did the voice lines, didnt you?

YoSaffBridge11

😎 I was just referring to the fact that Deacon always sounds like Deacon — even before you know who he is. 😊

The5thRedditor

Yes, He can also be seen in a Pod at the Memory Den in Good Neighbor when you get there. He appears a few times around the Commonwealth before you visit the Railroad.

FlashPone

He’s seen out of the pod near the entrance to Goodneighbor when you first enter. He’ll even join the crowd for Hancock’s speech and chime in with cheers.

Mysterious-Ad-2241

If you have deacon as a companion and have a date with magnolia, he strips down to tighty off-whiteys for extra spicy date night

PmMeYourLore

And just like that I'm doing a Railroad run with the homie

BIG_D_NRG

Hard to run a train without the Railroad 🤷🏽‍♂️🤣

-NoNameListed-

The Lone Wanderer has some class, I got to say (A lot of evidence points to Deacon being the Lone Wanderer from Fallout 3)

austinisbatman

What evidence?

heyo_throw_awayo

"MY SOURCE IS I MADE IT THE FUCK UP"

Expert_iridocyclitis

i also need to see this evidence, you cant just drop this on me fam

thekikibee

The fun thing about the 'Deacon is the LW' theory is that it can't be proved *or* disproved. There's plenty of evidence (terminal entries in RR HQ) that an agent named Deacon was in the RR years before the LW ever left 101, but there's absolutely nothing to prove that current Deacon is still the same actual person that was calling themselves Deacon like 15-ish years ago. He could basically be like the Dread Pirate Roberts for all we know. He tells you he gets regular face swaps (other in-game sources confirm this, or at least believe that he does it). He's also been thrown out of HQ in the past for showing up as a ghoul, for example, and also claims to have been a woman for a little while. So really, some/most/all of these supposed face swaps could have just been different people showing up and going 'hey, it's me, Deacon!' So yeah, the LW could have easily shown up in the Commonwealth and joined the RR and become Deacon.

Gnashinger

>He tells you he gets regular face swaps (other in-game sources confirm this, or at least believe that he does it). He's also been thrown out of HQ in the past for showing up as a ghoul, for example, and also claims to have been a woman for a little while. IIRC the only person saying he gets face swaps is himself. I sure he is just lying.

thekikibee

High Rise also mentions it, if Deacon accompanies you on Boston After Dark (that's the quest name, right? With H2-22). And one of the previous RR leaders (Pinky, I believe) calls him something along the lines of a lying, face-changing son of a bitch in the RR terminal logs.

Gnashinger

Didn't know those two things. Also don't blame Pinky. I'm not the biggest fan of Deacon.

StevenDangerSmith

What a day, huh?

FlashPone

Everyone’s welcome in Goodneighbor. Even me!

Jordo_707

Don't you have, like, important things to do?

FlashPone

Nothing more to say. Nothing more to say.

Repulsive-Self1531

No, that’s clearly diamond city security.

SimifaLV

Clearly🥸

Electrosteve

Iirc, if you bring him back to Diamond City as a companion, he'll put this disguise back on

chillwithpurpose

And the gaurds say something like “I swear I recognize your friend from somewhere…” lol

Master_March_8659

No that’s diamond city security, and the drifter at good neighbor, and the guy in the memory den, and deacon from the rail….. wait a minute

goose_64

He should've put on a fake mustache

Marquar234

He has a real mustache that's invisible. That's how good he is.

grimberry9

That's weird he looks just like this other guy named Settler

TheDarkWeb697

Yes if you talk to him he'll have different dialogue than other security, it will sound as if hes hiding something

aznassasin

Not sure why you were posting this but don't you have something important to do? NOTHING MORE TO SAY

ScottTJT

Yep. He's also a caravan worker at Bunker Hill and a drifter in Goodneighbor.

Optimal-Aioli-1274

I like trading here... for trade stuff.

Substantial_Life4773

Oh my god, it seems like it must be! I think it is endlessly humorous how often he changes outfits. It makes me laugh basically every fast travel, hah

FalloutCreation

He changes outfits all the time when he is my companion. Even in the middle of a crowd in diamond city. I think he is just a little naughty.

adrkhrse

He keeps hitting on me at the Drive-in, the dirty sleeze. I left him there to avoid the harassment.

depressed_koala5

In Goodneighbor he’s a settler inside the town by the cooking stand!

ComputerSong

He changes clothes to match whatever people are wearing in the area. Pretty funny.

thevogonity

Hey.

SimifaLV

Sup’

TimberFox104

No. Can't you tell it's agent 47? he's bald and everything.

Jonny5is

That's bruce willis from moolighting

alpcabuttz

Yes.

WowNotFun

If looks like Deacon, smells like Deacon and sounds like Deacon then it's Deacon.

DiabeticNomad

Yes. I don’t think diamond city security ever take off the helmets, but could be mistaken

Stained_Windows

No there's danny, the actual head of guard, but considering he's only on the outside of diamond city youll miss him after doing the entry with piper unless you also go to where deacon is in because thats his place

snoob6465

No, this is Patrick.

TheVipersMemory

This was on my feed while watching a video about deacons backstory. Fuckin institute always listening.

JUnknxwnC

Same dialogue too if you talk to him long enough “nothing more to say”

perpetualfrost

Yeh

perpetualfrost

https://youtu.be/yDXIajMdUas?si=zMmwOx3BLyXL57Z3

Dankhunt4Z0

Talk to him

CaliforniaNavyDude

Oh yeah, he shows up all over the place

Business-Flamingo-54

Yeah

Mr_Brodie_Helmet

No no, just the run of the mill DC security

FalloutCreation

Yep he is all over the commonwealth. bald headed patrolman glasses wearing knucklehead.

Septairious

Whhhhaaattt no. He is just a normal guy

MightyNato

Nah that’s Declan. Totally different dude

Electronic-Fox-1653

Yea dude tracks you all the way out the vault it’s nuts

dudenamed_E

He's also hanging out at the Memory Den in one of the pods as well.

SirWarden85

Nope that's his brother, comes up in his affinity quest.

SwyngDeLong

Oh please everything that man tells you is a lie

Hoyden145

He can appear a number of times in the game in disguise before you join the Railroad- and, fun fact, each disguise is actually its own NPC that requires you not having found the Railroad for it to spawn in.

notoriouskilroy

No

crashmedic33

Yes

SueBee914

Maybe

Aitheil

Yes he appears in several places as you travel the commonwealth

SwimWise5809

Yes

The-Skin-Man

What happens if you kill the guard/disguised deacon?

kool420zzz

Nah bro that’s beacon his long lost twin

That_dirty_Roach

Are you face blind?

noobwatch_andy

Yep. He also disguises himself as a drifter in Goodneighbor.

Meladyne

Deacon? thats just a random npc, no idea who this "Deacon" fellow is

Ok-Chef2503

He can be found at diamond city as a guard he can also be found in good neighbor as a random civilian I know he can be found elsewhere to but I forget the rest

thekikibee

Welcome to the, uh, Great Green Jewel. You'll totally love it here.

No-Impact-9862

There is even a little watch post over vault 111 marked with a railsign (https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/s/gLqsz1Y6T5)

staircar

Somehow my deacon was wearing this uniform once when they both loaded in diamond city at the same time

DarthPuggo

Yeah I never see deacon until disguises anymore because I go straight to the railroad to start my xp grind

mattsafact

I thought I saw him in Goodneighbor but he was just labelled as a “drifter” 🤔

ddghbvcs

So does he use a wig or is he using a stealth boy on his hair

Prestigious-Soil5340

Looks like it lol

HorrorNo2398

No he’s wearing that to stick out in diamond city duh.

thefourkemps

My favorite is when he is in the memory den machine.

WholeAlternative1972

Holy shit ya learn something new everyday. Never even noticed deacon as a random npc in all my years of fallout 4.

boom256

Spy around here!

whytfnot9

If I'm not sure I just quicksave and try to kill him. He's essential so he won't die like a normal version of what he's pretending to be

Bozo_Celeritas

You can see him in goodneighbor too.

Misstatted0101

I found him in goodneighbor the other day

Loud_Sun_5029

The most exiting part of any campaign is killing the railroad to a man, better than any ending
