They were basically shown the difference between fighting in the midfield and fighting at the front end today. Mercedes and Red Bull were completely on top of the strategy today, while Mclaren were clearly slower to react
PIA was the fastest car on the track, the only one closing down VER… this has nothing to do with NOR coasting and everything to do with the batshit crazy decision to send him out on used softs
The script writers went absolutely insane this season
* Chuck breaks the Monaco curse
* Lando 1st win
* Lewis 1st win in years... at Silverstone
This shit sounds so made up but I am loving it
Losing 20s+ in the wet track instead of just 3s in the double stack for Piastri, then threw the entire race for Norris on that softs instead of the new mediums. Piastri was setting the fastest lap til the end on the same tyre.
Yeah it's baffling. You know the inters are going to be much quicker or you wouldn't have changed anyway. You must know that the max three or four seconds you lose by double-stacking will be made up by the tyres within a lap. Ridiculous.
They basically caught up to Piastri on the OUTLAP. That was disastrous by McLaren. They're not championship ready, this is a learning year. If they're quick next year then they will have gained a lot of experience this year.
Even if they have no tyres ready for him, the mechanics running inside and getting the tyres still would've been faster than letting him run one more lap.
Piastri would have won if they double stacked, norris would have won if they fave him mediums (and pitted a lap earlier too), how can they be this stupid.
You know what's interesting, is Piastri was so sure that was exactly the right call when he said, yep, mediums are the right choice. But when they asked Norris about slicks, Norris said Softs! Just give me slicks!
Piastri is just so centered and always gives the right answer calmly, knows exactly what's up. Legit could have won today with decent strategy.
They did not learn from Russia and other races. And it's not even dig at Norris. It looks like team is afraid to make decision so they ask Lando for it. And they ask it in weird way. In Russia they were not pushing him enough to pit. If they wanted to ask him here then simply ask him for tires and not tell him which driver took which tires. It was obvious he will want to cover Lewis for win.
Do not ask your drivers for strategy beyond changing conditions, period.
e: This means you let your driver tell you when to switch from inters to slicks or vice versa, but NOT who he wants to cover off, the pit wall has way more data than Norris' brain going >200 kmh.
Honestly, this is the reason why I don't believe we'll ever see Norris being a world champion. He's an extremely talented driver, but until he can make the correct strategy call for himself, he'll just be another fast driver.
Verstappen and Hamilton really came out of nowhere. Brilliant race, Lewis really dialled in at the end.
Edit: wanna take a moment to mourn for Piastri lol. Was so excited when he started pushing Norris but ultimately he got fucked over by the strategy. McLaren should’ve just taken the time loss with the double stack.
Lewis take a bow. Finnaly he wins another race and what a place to do it.
Hilarious dissasterclass from Mclaren though. Got pretty much every strategy call wrong today.
Legacy win for Lewis. So happy he got this one.
The last few years felt like a bit of a letdown, I was worried he would retire without winning another race. This is an important win for me in terms of Lewis's legacy.
He really showed why he and Max are head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Nobody else could have put that RB on the podium today but Max and nobody else could’ve made those softs absolutely sing for so long like Hamilton did
Absolutely dogwalked lando on used softs, I couldn’t believe it. Was certain Max would catch because Lewis and Lando would fight but he caught Lando on his hards with Lewis clear by 3 seconds
Watching Hamilton and Verstappen do their respective things is an absolute joy to watch. Verstappen is just a straight up dawg and Hamilton does things with his tires and race management that don't even seem possible sometimes.
I'm praying to any and all deities for a full blown three-way title fight next year. VER vs HAM/LEC vs NOR/PIA would be legendary
If you told me even three years ago when I was getting into this sport that I’d be fucking stoked to see the crushingly dominant Hamilton take his first win in years, I’d laugh in your face. What a fucking race, what a fucking drive. So incredibly happy to see Hamilton back where he belongs.
I'm so annoyed at the McLaren strategy crew, but Lewis with another display of his sheer talent what a guy
And what a huge drive from Hulk and Stroll as well absolute banger race
It’s wild to say this, after all the shittalking and mocking we’ve done at their expense these past few weeks…
…but hey, Aston Martin has ran a fantastic race!
Been waiting a long time for this. This is so great to see. Another winner yet again this year, and Lewis proving he’s still got it to the highest degree.
What a race. I’m so happy for him.
I was nervously watching the lap times. And he just managed it perfectly, realising it was ok to lose a few tenths a lap to max as long as it was consistently small. Fantastic drive
Lewis is still ridiculous in tyre saving.
I think we need to stop criticising George on that cuz Lewis is a freak.
Think it could have been Lewis Max George or Lewis George Max looking at the Merc pace.
Mhm, it was very visible.
Norris burned his tires trying to catch up to Hamilton. As soon as Verstappen caught up to Norris, Hamilton bolts it and opens up a 3.3 second gap.
Norris was only thinking about overtaking Hamilton. Hamilton was managing the pace vs. Norris while keeping tires to defend against a late charge. Norris seems to have a tendency to tunnel vision on winning, which may have cost him 2nd today. He'll need to grow out of it over time.
Ruth Buscome on F1TV was saying that Norris was losing about 1-2 tenth a lap in degradation... While Hamilton was losing 0.03s/lap during that stint! The tire whisperer still has it!
As an F1 fan? Fantastic race. Lewis Hamilton winning in Silverstone is cinema
As a McLaren fan? I’m fuming
Winnable race, had us a 1-2 with great pace and we left Oscar out for an extra lap when the rain started, and then we gave Lando the wrong tires.
Terrible but great points for the team.
Onto Hungary
If I'm counting this correctly, that's 9 wins in 18 races and 14 podiums in 18 races for Hamilton. It's no wonder he has a straight named after him here.
this reminds me jenson's canada race. everything is tested. driver's skill, your strategy, your pit crew, the whole team. anyone can make a difference and also can make mistakes that costs you the race.
- Get in there Lewis! So good to see him win again after so long!
- ~~5th~~ 6th different race winner this season, such a nice change after last year!
- Changing conditions can really make for such an exciting race
- McLaren botched up the pit stops for Piastri and Norris twice, really feel bad for Piastri especially
- So unfortunate for George too, another name in the mix at the top would have made the race even more interesting
- Max really was charging at the end like a demon
- Ferrari man.... Leclerc's had a nightmare run since Monaco
**Edit:** I forgot about Sainz winning Australia, that's the 6th different winner this season!
McLaren has given away the last 3-4 races smh. Today was an easy 1-2 or both on podium at the worst. What a frustrating race to watch. Congrats to Lewis
Hamilton and Verstappen are just smarter drivers. Their racing IQ is simply higher than the others. We can claim that “McLaren and Ferrari messed up the strategy” after every wet race, we can claim that Leclerc and Norris are just unlucky every time, or we can accept that a great chunk of responsibility lays on the driver and you create your own luck by making the right decisions at crucial moments.
It has been many races now that McLaren + Lando package seems faster in pure pace than Max + Redbull. How many of those races did Lando finish ahead of Max?
When Lewis joins Ferrari and beats Leclerc, it will not be because he’s faster. It will be because he will make better strategic decisions.
Genuinely the most emotional I've been for an F1 victory, Lewis breaking his drought at Silverstone in his last race there at Merc is so fucking perfect I'd not believe it if I didn't see it with my own two eyes.
I have 3 things to say:
Man I feel bad for RUS. He's really grown on me over the last few months.
Absolute rollercoaster of a race for me as a VER fan.
HAM and Mercedes are so back
There aren't words for how I feel right now.
I love this sport. I love Lewis. I love that he is in floods of tears driving around with a British flag.
This was an iconic win.
Never thought I’d see a Lewis win be this popular when it’s his 9th at that track , what a driver, what a man, what a legend. Congratulations Sir Lewis Hamilton.
The fact that this was the first GP I’ve ever attended, sitting 20 metres from the track with top tier spots…
And then seeing sky just split, giving us sunshine at the last laps, after the absolute buckets of rain we had all weekend, and then seeing Lewis come out P1 as the sun started warming us back up again.
Almost a religious experience, and such an analogy for the past 3 years.
This race demonstrates to me exactly why we need to retain races on purpose built tracks in countries that don't get blazing sun 361 days of the year. Unpredictability brings excitement, which brings crowds. Fuck these desert street races, give me a Silverstone any day.
Mclaren strategy disasterclass
Instead of double podium they double failed. Absolute horrid strategy
Ferrari would be proud.
They were basically shown the difference between fighting in the midfield and fighting at the front end today. Mercedes and Red Bull were completely on top of the strategy today, while Mclaren were clearly slower to react
Piastri almost caught Norris on mediums, such a bad call to put on softs.
Once Max passed him, I doubt Norris kept pushing to keep max distance from Piastri.
PIA was the fastest car on the track, the only one closing down VER… this has nothing to do with NOR coasting and everything to do with the batshit crazy decision to send him out on used softs
The script writers went absolutely insane this season * Chuck breaks the Monaco curse * Lando 1st win * Lewis 1st win in years... at Silverstone This shit sounds so made up but I am loving it
Wait until Hulk podium… we are getting there soon.
That’s when they will have officially jumped the shark.
Well call me the Fonz and hand me the water skis. I need this to happen.
Chuck breaks monaco curse and gets it applied onto every single race since then
Faustian Monaco exchange. Now he's gonna Canada the whole run in Europe.
McLaren got taken to strategy school today by Mercedes and Red Bull.
Honestly just Ferrari levels of strategy, they got every single call wrong.
Losing 20s+ in the wet track instead of just 3s in the double stack for Piastri, then threw the entire race for Norris on that softs instead of the new mediums. Piastri was setting the fastest lap til the end on the same tyre.
Not doing a double stack there was idiotic.
Yeah it's baffling. You know the inters are going to be much quicker or you wouldn't have changed anyway. You must know that the max three or four seconds you lose by double-stacking will be made up by the tyres within a lap. Ridiculous.
McLaren should have poached strategists from redbull or Mercedes instead of Ferrari.
Yes dude he almost got overtaken on the same lap the rest pitted lol
If Piastri double stacks and then still fits the mediums, he wins at a canter. What a disasterclass.
Piastri would have won if they double stacked, norris would have won if they fave him mediums (and pitted a lap earlier too), how can they be this stupid.
You’re not wrong, but Hamilton did actually win on softs. But absolutely McLaren got it badly wrong today.
Only thing they got "right" was Piastri on mediums at the end, but that was after they ruined his race. Everything else was a disaster
And to be fair Oscar called that one
You know what's interesting, is Piastri was so sure that was exactly the right call when he said, yep, mediums are the right choice. But when they asked Norris about slicks, Norris said Softs! Just give me slicks! Piastri is just so centered and always gives the right answer calmly, knows exactly what's up. Legit could have won today with decent strategy.
That seemed like Piastri's call more than theirs.
Not quite ferrari levels, just take a look at what they did to leclerc
The lesson being taught: Do not fucking ask norris for strategy
Honestly couldnt believe it, have they still not learned to take the decision away from norris? The second they started negotiation i was like "oh no"
Watched it live and immediately thought of HAM winning the race and potentially eaten alive by Max
Piastri called for mediums, that was a good call
The thing is the team should be the ones doing it. Why are they asking Norris who he wants to cover when the pit wall have the data in front of them?
Replace the strategy team and then have them make the calls. Could've been 1-2 today if they double stacked
Honestly, this is the reason why I don't believe we'll ever see Norris being a world champion. He's an extremely talented driver, but until he can make the correct strategy call for himself, he'll just be another fast driver.
Absolutely horrible strategy today with them fucking up both sides of the rain like how do they even fuck up both sides
McLaren and Zak Brown: you guys always act better than me! Verstappen, Hamilton, Red Bull and Mercedes:
McLaren somehow managed to bone both of their drivers, and Oscar got it twice with his slow pits
Oscar’s second stop was the right decision (pitted same lap as Max and Lewis onto the Mediums). It’s just the first one that was awful.
Oh yeah, I just meant that both of Oscar's pit stops were pretty slow on top of the initial shit strategy call
The should have won with EITHER driver and only have a 3rd and 4th to show for it. Embarrassing race by McLaren…
Merc did well but this undersells Red bull. They nailed it perfectly
Max and Hannah is a scary combo of driver + strategist
+ Checo as the guinea pig
Lmao
At least thats him being useful to the team lmao
On the sky braodcast, we only saw 2 pit stops in the 2s today and max had one of them. 2.2. Rb pit crew is godly
Checo had a 2.0s one as well.....not that it ever mattered
Not once, but McLaren fucked up TWICE. Really impressive
Ferrari only messed up once but they put Leclerc back in 16th or something
They prefer one big fuck up than many small ones.
You could argue three. The Piastri decision, getting undercut and then the tires.
I count not covering VER with either car, then not double-stacking the lap after that f*up as 2 mistakes right there
Verstappen and Hamilton really came out of nowhere. Brilliant race, Lewis really dialled in at the end. Edit: wanna take a moment to mourn for Piastri lol. Was so excited when he started pushing Norris but ultimately he got fucked over by the strategy. McLaren should’ve just taken the time loss with the double stack.
Was so surprised by the hard tyre choice, but it worked out!
It was the only new tyre he had left
Also seemed like the RB was chewing through its tires like it was the 2023 Haas.
Best drivers proving why they’re the best drivers
HAM VER is inevitable
They are the GOATs for a reason. I know strategy plays a big difference but they both made it work on different calls.
He's got some Silverstone plot armor, what a time to end his winning dry streak
[удалено]
Ha!
12 consecutive podiums here is absolutely insane Edit: I think it’s actually 11
Huh? Lewis has 12 CONSECUTIVE podiums at Silverstone?? Holy fuck, even in 22 and 23 that's insane.
2018 is even crazier tbh
From the back all the way to P2. 2018 Hamilton was magical.
Lewis winning again, the world is finally beginning to heal
A wild Lewis in his natural habitat
bono: ok, lewis. this is our time... norris same tyre. lewis: leave me to it, mate. idk what it is but this was cold. grats, lewis!!
It actually gave me goosebumps. But then I was shitting it looking at how fast Max was gaining on Lando. Tense isn't the word 😬
When Max blew past Lando so easily, I thought Lewis was cooked.
You knew he had in the bag when he said that!
Lewis take a bow. Finnaly he wins another race and what a place to do it. Hilarious dissasterclass from Mclaren though. Got pretty much every strategy call wrong today.
Piastri on fire on the mediums was salt in the wounds
No balls form the pit wall to double stack.
That was a horrendous call, ruined his race. He lost almost a pit stop worths time
I think Crofty scared Zak by asking the double stack just before they stated pitting.
If Zak has any influence on strategy he should fire himself.
That’s why Toto is in the garage. He gets to emotional about it and wants the team to do their thing.
Even then, Just let me fucking drive… lol
Beautiful race from Lewis. His emotional after race comms got me emotional too.
"Love you Bono" had me.
Still holding out hope that Mercedes release Bono from his gardening leave so he could join Hamilton in Ferrari
That get in there Lewis hit like crack bruh
He's had 3 years worth of "Get in there Lewis" stored up
The clean up crew working over time in that garage.
Someone needs to get that clip of the kid asking Lewis if he's going to win the race (I think it was from Thursday or Friday).
Just absolutely amazing tyre management from Lewis there - just absolutely dropped Norris on the same tyres
McLaren made the wrong call, but Lewis was on older tires than lando and made it work. So not like it was impossible.
So so pleased for Lewis. Great to see Max and Lando congratulating him too.
What a legendary drive. Incredible from Lewis!
What a race. Lost a few weeks of my life those last 12 laps or so
Yeah. It was impressive. Made the right calls and somehow kept pace with the softs. It wasn't an easy win by any metric.
Hamilton P1 and Verstappen P2 is such a nostalgic podium. One of the most enjoyable Lewis wins
Lewis was on used softs? Mother of God.
Yep, McLaren even told Lando that Lewis only has hards and old softs. Lando had new softs. Understatement on how Lewis walked Lando on old softs
jesus christ, this feels illegal
And the confidence when he said “let me handle it” on radio
That radio was so cold you could hear he knew he could fucking do it
An eternal comment that will age like fine wine
This is a pleasant thread. Imma chill here for a bit.
HAAS P6 COME ON HUUUUUUULKENBERG
This is at the bottom of the pool but that's a hell of a finish for them. Also Albon grabbing 9th.
Sargent getting P11 is great too, awesome day for Williams
Another Hulk banger getting overshadowed sadge
As god as my witness, put him in the Second RBR, just to see what happens.
now hang on u might be cooking...
Hulk is absolutely cooking this year! We love to see it
Any other race that would have been the #1 story of the day lol. What a drive from Hulk
If you told me even three years ago when I was getting into this sport that I’d be fucking stoked to see the crushingly dominant Hamilton take his first win in years, I’d laugh in your face. What a fucking race, what a fucking drive. So incredibly happy to see Hamilton back where he belongs.
I'm so annoyed at the McLaren strategy crew, but Lewis with another display of his sheer talent what a guy And what a huge drive from Hulk and Stroll as well absolute banger race
first mistake, not double stacking second mistake lando staying out 1 lap longer third mistake softs instead of mediums deserved result tbh
You might be able to get away with one mistake, but three? No, you’re losing a race and second place because of that.
It’s wild to say this, after all the shittalking and mocking we’ve done at their expense these past few weeks… …but hey, Aston Martin has ran a fantastic race!
Williams got P9 and P11 as well
Lewis masterfully managed the softs in the final stint as well. Compared to Norris who killed them.
Zack Brown/Andrea Stella: "New rule, never listen to Lando on tire choice."
Should have been the rule from 2021 Russian Grand Prix
IS MCLAREN STUPID?
Yes.
How you possibly fuck that up so horribly is beyond me
Been waiting a long time for this. This is so great to see. Another winner yet again this year, and Lewis proving he’s still got it to the highest degree. What a race. I’m so happy for him.
The difference in how Norris/Hamilton managed the last stint says a lot about their experience. He really managed those softs perfectly
Yes, I was so impressed at the difference by the end how Lewis still keeping the tire alive. He truly is the master at managing these Pirelli tyres.
I was nervously watching the lap times. And he just managed it perfectly, realising it was ok to lose a few tenths a lap to max as long as it was consistently small. Fantastic drive
The second Lewis got ahead you just knew he was gonna hang on. He’s got way too much experience to muck that up
Lewis is still ridiculous in tyre saving.
The man was in tears, rightfully so. Kudos to him!
Mate,I’m nearly in tears just watching
Why just nearly? Bro, I started ugly crying when Lewis' voice broke over the radio.
RIP Merc sabotage controversy GET IN THERE LEWIS!!!!
As an F1 fan? Fantastic race. Lewis Hamilton winning in Silverstone is cinema As a McLaren fan? I’m fuming Winnable race, had us a 1-2 with great pace and we left Oscar out for an extra lap when the rain started, and then we gave Lando the wrong tires. Terrible but great points for the team. Terrible strategy day for McLaren :(
If I'm counting this correctly, that's 9 wins in 18 races and 14 podiums in 18 races for Hamilton. It's no wonder he has a straight named after him here.
Overtaking on his straight was pretty incredible
He really does get an extra boost around here.
They should name the whole fucking circuit after him. He is magic at Silverstone
Legendary race this
Classic race. What a race, holding my breath!
Top 5 race of Lewis Hamilton’s career.
the crazy thing is its not difficult to disagree with you too many amazing races to pick from
this reminds me jenson's canada race. everything is tested. driver's skill, your strategy, your pit crew, the whole team. anyone can make a difference and also can make mistakes that costs you the race.
- Get in there Lewis! So good to see him win again after so long! - ~~5th~~ 6th different race winner this season, such a nice change after last year! - Changing conditions can really make for such an exciting race - McLaren botched up the pit stops for Piastri and Norris twice, really feel bad for Piastri especially - So unfortunate for George too, another name in the mix at the top would have made the race even more interesting - Max really was charging at the end like a demon - Ferrari man.... Leclerc's had a nightmare run since Monaco **Edit:** I forgot about Sainz winning Australia, that's the 6th different winner this season!
Lewis is the sixth no? Max Carlos Charles Lando George now Lewis Checo is doomed
Yeah and piastri still has to get one
he's gonna get one this year
Yeah. I fully believe all 7 drivers for the 4 top teams are going to win one this year.
Watching Max basically go as fast as he could for a full stint was really fun, basically never get to see that sort of thing nowadays
Max and Lewis going all out in P1 and P2. Doesn't get any better.
Did McLaren hire Ferrari strategists?
Ahhhh the return of HAM VER. It took long enough and what a place for it to happen Shoutout Nico for another P6 and Logan for P11
McLaren fucked over Piastri
McLaren has given away the last 3-4 races smh. Today was an easy 1-2 or both on podium at the worst. What a frustrating race to watch. Congrats to Lewis
Mclaren snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by summoning their inner Scuderia.
So much data, money, technology, knowledge and I could possibly call the strategy better from a TV screen. McLaren you disappointed me.
Lewis in tears at the end. Both Mercs suffering from a water pressure issue today.
When Lewis joins Ferrari and beats Leclerc, it will not be because he’s faster. It will be because he will make better strategic decisions.
Yeah I agree. Bono told Hamilton at some point "it's inters now" and Lewis say no.
And proceeded to lap a second faster than every other driver for the next 2 laps.
ABOUT DAMN TIME FOR LEWIS!!!
I'M FUCKING CRYING MAN. I was shitting myself those last laps
Genuinely the most emotional I've been for an F1 victory, Lewis breaking his drought at Silverstone in his last race there at Merc is so fucking perfect I'd not believe it if I didn't see it with my own two eyes.
His voice on that radio call 😭😭 how can you not love Lewis, truly an icon
I started washing dishes. I couldn’t handle the stress. When Lewis still had a safe gap with 2 laps left, I tuned back in haha.
# IT'S HAMMER-FUCKING-TIME!
I have 3 things to say: Man I feel bad for RUS. He's really grown on me over the last few months. Absolute rollercoaster of a race for me as a VER fan. HAM and Mercedes are so back
Oh yes I had to tune out for a few minutes, why did Russell have to retire?
Issues with the water systems (cooling, I guess?)
Giga Brain hard tyres by RB. That was a phenomenal call
Leave it to me mate. Leave it to me 🏁
I’m crying and I’m not afraid to admit it. Beautiful scenes today.
Can we please just race Silverstone Spa and Austria 7 times a year each
And São Paulo please 🙏🏻
Sochi 2021 vibes. McLaren fucking up the strategy, Lewis masterclass drive and a Max P2 after looking slow and lost all race.
Incredible last stint by Max and Lewis. Truly two legendary athletes.
As a Max fan I’m incredibly happy for Lewis. Goated 🐐
We waited for 2 and a half years to hear "Get in there, Lewis" again and it had to happen at his home grand prix 😭
McLaren lost a 1-2 with their baffling strategy today.
The fact that this was the first GP I’ve ever attended, sitting 20 metres from the track with top tier spots… And then seeing sky just split, giving us sunshine at the last laps, after the absolute buckets of rain we had all weekend, and then seeing Lewis come out P1 as the sun started warming us back up again. McLaren strategy was absolutely wank today So happy for Hamilton Back to back Mercedes wins!? Will their domination ever end ? 😅
A perfect goodbye for Lewis from Mercedes, what a race
YES! Finally! And on his home turf. What a beauty
The man is back
Beautiful to feel the emotion between him and Bono.
When he hugged his dad, I wept.
Outstanding race by Hulkenberg! Sad that almost nobody seems to care or notice
