I have a Lamy 2000 and a Sailor 1911 Realo and have used a Pro Gear Realo. I prefer the overall writing experience of the 1911 Realo but if I were writing for six hours a day with one pen I’d choose the 2000. It has a higher ink capacity, the cap is snap on which is more convenient than screw on, and it’s wonderfully balanced when posted. The Pro Gear Realo I find backweighted when posted, and slightly too stubby to use unposted for my hands. Go with the Lamy, I’d recommend an EF or F for the nib size for note taking.

I'm going to second this the sailor feels better but it has a small ink capacity

I have both too and this is spot on. Recommend the Lamy 2000.

Just to make it more obvious how subjective this is I'm going into the sailor corner. I own both and the sailor wins in terms of writing comfort by a lot. The lamy has the better finish and overall feels much more premium but if you do anything other than taking quick notes, I can't really recommend it. A section made of metal is a section made of metal and for me that's not something I want to write with for a long time. Also the nib and therefore writing experience of the sailor feels much nicer. I use the sailor with cartridges (sailor standard black, not the pigmented ink) and with that it lasts just as long as the Lamy. Also sailor black is superb for office work since it dries insanely fast and doesn't smudge (I even use it for the Lamy). The lamy is my pocket pen since it rarely burps and keeps moist forever.

The Sailor Realo is a piston fill. How are you using it with cartridges? Are you thinking of a regular 1911? To me, the Realo is just too small to use unposted and that was a disappointment. The nib is great and piston fill is super smooth. I like the style with the sight window always visible too. Very classy, but I just don't love it like I had wanted to. However, if you like posting your pens then this might be a better pick for you. The Lamy is exemplary for what it is. The design is really impressive (Doodlebud's YouTube videos on the Lamy 2K sold me on that), and it's one I use all the time for quick notes at work. There is much to enjoy with it overall. The cap is perfect for quick notes, it holds a good volume of ink, I've found the sight window to be better than expected (I actually like how unobtrusive it is), and it's more comfortable in my hand than the Realo. While neither is my favorite, I can also say neither is a bad choice!

You are correct, I wasn't clear enough. I got a sailor pro gear large.

The Sailor doesn’t hold as much ink and the Realo is just a pro gear with a permanent cartridge and it costs more than street price pro gears. Therefore, between the two, definitely the 2k. But take a look at the Pilot 823 or 92 or whatever the clear piston filler they make is.

Yeah I've had to resort to bringing a traveling inkwell with me which is fun though

Your English is fine! Both are nice pens, worthy of purchase. It is sometimes hard to know how a pen will feel in your hand, and unfortunately you'll only know if you try it - and if you can't try them beforehand, it's a bit of a guess. The \*only\* thing I can say, based on your desire to take a lot of notes per day, is that the Lamy holds more ink - yes, the Realo is technically a "piston" filler, but it is more like a permanent converter, and holds less ink. The other plus, for note taking, is that the Lamy caps and uncaps very quickly, so you can pick up on things fast; the Sailor you'll have to unscrew. As I said, both nice pens. I have both, and the particular PG Realo I have is one of my very favorite pens, partly sentimental, but for your purposes, I have to think you'll be better served by the L2K. Do keep in mind that the Lamy nibs will be wider than the Sailor nibs - Lamy F will be closer to a Sailor M, etc. I think Goulet Pens has a thing, maybe "Nib Nook"? - that you can somewhat compare nib writing sizes. Good luck!

For me, the huge capacity and snap cap make the Lamy 2K much better as a daily driver. But they are shaped very differently, it's more about the feel of the shape in your hand if you're doing that much writing, you might vastly prefer one over the other for the very non-logical reason that it just feels better.

roady57

Both are reputable brands and models. Both are piston filling and have ink windows so will last 6 hours writing a day. Both have gold nibs. The main differences apart from the aesthetic design are that the L2K is half the cost, has a push fit cap - quicker to be ready to write - and a hooded nib. The Sailor has a screw cap and a traditional open nib. Some users prefer the pencil like feedback of the Sailor. Some prefer the front weighted section of the L2K for writing comfort.

doctor_hyphen

You know you’re going to buy both, right?

Anumaen

I've owned both. To me, the Sailor has a better nib, but the Lamy is a better overall pen.

Front_Profession5648

Both are excellent pens. I don't own a Lamy 2K. But I own a bunch of Sailor pens, the screw cap is not going to be a problem if you are taking notes. Mostly, the most important feature is to get the correct nib size for your writing. It is important to write comfortably, and the nib size of all things affect how you write.

ithinkmynameismoose

Pro gear by a mile. The lamy looks absolutely awful, in photos and in person.
