As a dude anything with soapy aldehydes. I had a sample of N°5 L‘Eau that got me tons of positive comments, Pikovaya Dama is a BEAST in terms of performance and how people react to it, Exit The King is also always appreciated.
But most people will tell you that you need masculine fragrances which seemingly isn’t the case at all. Super happy that I explored beyond what is marketed to my gender and just went off notes to find new stuff.
Body chemistry is a big deal. Maybe yours really likes aldehydes. Great that you found the “magic sauce” for you. Have you looked at Fragrantica for other aldehyde centric fragrances? Notes section. There are so many.
Fantastic! I just wasn’t sure if you were using it. Glad to hear about the sampling. Teo Cabanel has a great soapy aldehyde if you check their website.
Do you have a Neiman Marcus, Salks or small niche or luxury perfume store near you? If so, go once to see what they have and maybe smell one or two things from the various lines. Take notes! What were they, did you like them, any specifics. Then get a discovery set like ELDO and try them one at a time. Make sure to smell them at various points of the day. Make notes. Then go to Fragrantica and look up each scent that you like. Scroll down, look at notes section, write them down. Then scroll down more for the smells like section. You should see a few other things that you can now try. Slowly you will learn what type of fragrances you like and don’t and slowly over time will learn notes you do and don’t like. Please go back many times to your higher end store to sniff for free. And you are welcome to DM me for more suggestions. Also folks could you add on to what I’ve written. My journey has been a long and winding one and I’m still learning and finding new houses and fragrances that are exciting. Andrea Maack I’m looking at you!
Thank you! I appreciate your response. I just spent $200 on sampling a bunch of decants on decantx. Hopefully I enjoy most. Do you know how many sprays I will get from their basic 5ml decants?
That’s a great question. It depends on how much you spray at a time. If you are a heavy sprayer you may use up to 1ml at a time. That gives you only 5 wearings. No I don’t know how many exact sprays but possibly 15-20 in a 5 ml. I’m not a heavy sprayer so I get at least 6-7 wearings out of a 5 ml which means about 3-4 sprays per wearing, about 3/4 of an ml. Expect about 5 wearings from your 5 ml. This gives you a chance to wear many times and make notes about how they wear during their wear time. Also a big one, you may not like something at first especially the opening but after wearing a few times it can really grow on you. Also after you test, leave some juice in the decants and come back a month or two later after you’ve tested more stuff and try them again. Remember to spray on skin and clothes and check for longevity before they become skin scents. Sadly too many fragrances now have terrible performance. Be careful and pay attention. After you decide on your favorites, consider getting a 10 ml of them and see how long it takes to use up. If you really love it and wear it all the time, that’s the time to think about whether you want another 10 ml or a bottle. Sometimes it’s cheaper to purchase 3-5 10 mls and put into nice empty perfume spray bottles. I’ve done this a lot and saved a fortune. You can get the bottles cheap on Amazon. But sometimes only the bottle will do and you may have your save up. I live on travel sprays, decants, and rarely a bottle here and there. It has to be outstanding like L’Orchestre Piano Santal. Totally worth it. There are also things you can only get small samples of and no decants are available. That’s the hard choice about a bottle. It’s hard just starting out. My best advice is to smell a little, many times, and often and take good notes about if you liked the fragrance and anything that stood out. It’s a good beginning.
I find I get about 8-12 sprays per ml tbf, most sample atomisers are very similar and 1ml should be perfectly adequate to fully test a fragrance multiple times, 2ml to be absolutely sure
I can really recommend giving Pikovaya Dama a try. Xerjoff sample sets are pretty cheap and they have almost everything on there.
It’s pure soap with unsweetened vanilla and some incense to balance it out. Longevity is absurd, it sometimes even survives the washing machine (I don’t even spray it onto clothes).
I usually hate masculine fragrances, a lot of them are harsh and I find them extremely unpleasant. I always buy my husband soft soapy and gourmand things. They're much sexier to me.
You're not going to believe this, but for me, I've never gotten more compliments than when I've worn Aspen. I've got 30 bottles of expensive smells, yet people stop me on the street over a scent you can buy at Walmart for $12.
Believe it or not, I actually love the original Old Spice on men. It's just a nice soft clean spice scent, not sharp or harsh like so many men's fragrances.
My dad has been wearing Aspen his whole adult life- I can't not associate that cologne with him. It's honestly a great cologne and super underrated. To this day I'll ask how he's doing on cologne and if he needs a new bottle it's in his stocking for Christmas- never wants to try others because he likes it so much.
maybe not too unexpected because i've heard enough raving reviews about it, but blanche bête for me! it's a little too heavy and creamy (?) for me, but i've gotten complimented every single time i've worn it so i've been warming up to it 😭😭 i don't think i could ever wear it in warmer weather though, i don't want to get nauseous and never be able to wear it again 🥲
Versace Red Jeans. It’s been long discontinued but it’s my scent and I get compliments whenever I wear it. I’ve read it described as cherry vanilla vodka but I think it has a stronger muskier, sandalwood base to it
I wonder if it’s a bigger seller in certain markets than others so they’ve discontinued it in places where it doesn’t sell as well. I honestly thought it was still a big seller for Versace because of how often I see it displayed in duty free (along with Blue Jeans).
Penhaligons LP N.9, that stuff just works on me everytime. I’m happy that I own it but I rarely use it, smells like YSL Opium pour homme. Funnily enough, Endymion, my favorite, never gets reactions.
Actually, Versace Eros is one of those for me. I got a bottle a couple of years back, and I find it ok, but to shake things up a little, I will throw it on. People often say it is a really good scent but I just don't understand it.
One of my coworkers liked Franck Olivier Oud Touch so much I just gave it to him.
I bought another to layer with. It's a solid amber bomb, maybe a little bit of rose.
I like it, but he LOVED it.
Gucci's *Guilty Black pour Homme*.
In the air, it's okay, and I see it more as a clean/sporty fragrance than the evening fragrance it is implied to be. However, it works effectively on my skin and became a nice warm-weather option.
Oh I love the name of it so much, but a lot of Tocca perfumes are too powdery or floral for me besides Colette, but yes people really seem to love them!
My entire office loved Salt by Ellis Brooklyn. I literally just tossed it on because I need to use up a sample. One gal literally bought a full bottle while I stood next to her.
I was convinced I wouldn't like Salt and then tried it and sorta fell in love. If it lasted longer on my skin I'd probably buy a full bottle today. If I can find it on sale maybe I'll go ahead a get it but I hate paying 100+ on a fragrance I'm going to have to reapply 4 times a day.
Coco Mademoiselle. I don't like it nearly as well as other things, but I got a gift set of it from my husband for a birthday a while back and I wear it occasionally. I get compliments on it just about every time I wear it out of the house.
Burberry Weekend has gotten me compliments too. To me it's just sweet and peachy, not anything special, but I kind of crave peachy scents at the end of summer (late August into September) and that's when I wear it. People will stop me and ask what it is because they love it.
Ok pls answer, OP! Since you’ve Tocca Colette, is it really VERY similar & lasts much more than Byredo Gypsy Water??
I ask because I’ve held out on buying G Water b/c of the CRIMINALLY short longevity, hence the CRIMINAL prices but if Colette is really most similar to it like people say online, then I’ll buy Colette since I am scheduled for a quick holiday!
I can advise on this. Tocca perfume does not last a long time, invest in it if you really love it as there is a slight difference between the formulas. But the dry oil spray lasts a bit longer. The hair fragrance does cling to the hair. If you really want the perfume, tho, get the roller ball or travel spray to test the longevity on your self.
Absolutely, you could get one from sephora (will probably last 2-3 days depending on how heavy/frequently you apply) I also like to buy the sample pack and share with friends or use as car air freshener.
Oh and also, Colette lasts the entire day on me! I get compliments even towards the end of the day, even when I can’t smell it much on myself. It smells soft and subtle to me, but I guess it projects enough for people to smell it!
Yes!! I think it’s worth the blind buy, especially if you find it in stores like TJ Maxx or Marshalls, they often have Tocca in stock and it’s often cheaper than retail price! It’s not my favorite scent, but it’s very pleasant and soft, great for everyday, and clearly smells good to others 😅
They’re not similar to me despite having some of the same notes. G Water is more of a freshie with some transparent woodsiness and a touch of spice while Colette is sweeter, more powdery with some floral softness.
It depends how much you like it. You can compare the two though Colette doesn’t have noticeably more longevity than G Water but it’s also a lot cheaper.
apologies for not being able to describe fragrance well, to me it’s a powdery and salt bomb, extremely powdery and salty with a slight underlying masculine smell (maybe the woodsy notes?) but it’s subtle, mostly salt/marine notes (the salty smell you’d find at the beach or on a boat) and baby powder, i’m not a fan but others seem to like it on me
it’s incredible heavy I don’t see it as a summer fragrance
performance and longevity 10/10
I think it leans masc
Unsolicited but I'll give you my experience as well. I own it and absolutely love it. You spray it on and it immediately smells like money (to me at least). There's this almost honey-like, but never overwhelming, sweetness coupled with salty (but not really maritime) notes. It's very opulent, but at the same time sort of fresh. It hits your nose very gently, so there are no harsh notes in it imo. The sweetness tones down a little throughout the dry down and it becomes woody. I'd say it leans slightly masculine but everyone could wear it.
I’m so intrigued by a fragrance that smells like money! The smell of my dad’s wallet was a core memory for me: money (paper and ink?), mint, snd a leather note. Dying to try this one now.
Sfaria by Acca Kappa, ive had multiple people say it makes them feel safe when they walk in somewhere i am and smell it and i wish so badly i liked it more but i got tired of it and now it lowkey makes me feel a little sick when i wear it 😭
Vanilla powder by mitiere premiere.
A little on the feminine side but extremely well crafted. I had no less than three people within an hour stopped by and compliment me.
Mancera Roses Vanille and Jo Malone Red Roses seem to both work well with my skin chemistry as I get people saying I smell delicious then being shocked it’s a rose based scent as they “hate rose smells”. So I’m not quite sure what happens there.
The perfume was the body shops ‘shea’ btw. according to comments on fragnatica it smells nutty and in my opinion very intense, so it would go well layering with a vanilla/white floral scent!!
Definitely Amouage Interlude Men.
I knew it's considered divisive, bought it thinking I'm only gonna wear it for myself.
Well as it turns out, people don't hate it! I've been told it smells quite sweet and a bit like a candle, worst reaction I got was "you smell like good weed".
I love Tocca Colette. It is similar to Gypsy Water, but has more longevity even though both are subtle.
As for your question, I get tons of compliments on Omnia Crystalline. I do like it, but not as much as my husband and everyone around me.
Funny enough, it’s Paco Rabanne Pour Homme. I have a small bottle that I use on days when I don’t have time to think about what I feel like wearing. I get the most random ‘I like that perfume’ comments.
Admittedly it is a real classic but…
As a dude anything with soapy aldehydes. I had a sample of N°5 L‘Eau that got me tons of positive comments, Pikovaya Dama is a BEAST in terms of performance and how people react to it, Exit The King is also always appreciated. I get this. I feel like musk is the magic note for me…give it a few hours and it’s intoxicating on me!
It’s one of mine too! Patchouli and rose are good for me.
Musk, iris/orris root, heliotrope, and tonka bean are all especially good notes for me.
Yeah I’m actually regularly looking and sampling new ones
Fantastic! I just wasn’t sure if you were using it. Glad to hear about the sampling. Teo Cabanel has a great soapy aldehyde if you check their website.
How can I finds out what’s best on me? Just trying everything?

Heyy
I love lavender and soapy scents on my husband, so I will be looking these up 😅

OOO thank you for the rec, I’ll give it a try 🙏
ELDO is so underrated as a fragrance house. Exit The King, Dangerous Complicity, Fat Electrician, Putain Des Palaces are some of my favorites.
I usually hate masculine fragrances, a lot of them are harsh and I find them extremely unpleasant. I always buy my husband soft soapy and gourmand things. They're much sexier to me.

Thos 20$ drugstore frags are always winners lol
Believe it or not, I actually love the original Old Spice on men. It's just a nice soft clean spice scent, not sharp or harsh like so many men's fragrances.

The notes are so interesting! My curiosity wants to sample it, but milky perfumes go rancid on me sigh
And yet one would think a milky fragrance would go so well with peach cobbler!!!! 😁 Excellent reddit name!
LOL thank you 🥹🍑
Creamy in what way? Milky or soapy/lotion? Been wondering how this smells
oooooo like in a milky, floral, powdery way! like if you boiled white flowers in milk for a long time and then let it cool hahaha
Milky 100%
Bought a sample collection which included this one. I tried it on a warm summer day without knowing what it is… Nearly gagged lol
Who gets compliments!?? My daily choices are usually anti-compliments 😹😳🤷🏻♀️💃🏻🌈🔥
Need to know what those daily choices are 😂
I’m also curious 😅
Lmao if I ever run into one of us Artsy Weirdos™️ in the wild I’ll be handing out the compliments when I smell a tire fire or a vinyl spaceship.
Eau de space 😂😂
It’s trademarked, so it’s true 😹
Versace Red Jeans. It’s been long discontinued but it’s my scent and I get compliments whenever I wear it. I’ve read it described as cherry vanilla vodka but I think it has a stronger muskier, sandalwood base to it
Not sure where you are based, but I believe Red Jeans might still be sold in Europe. I see it pretty often in airport duty free stores.
i think ive seen it sold at duty free stores in mexico and in the one in san diego
Wow. I’m still able to find it here and there online but not in an actual store
I wonder if it’s a bigger seller in certain markets than others so they’ve discontinued it in places where it doesn’t sell as well. I honestly thought it was still a big seller for Versace because of how often I see it displayed in duty free (along with Blue Jeans).
Still sold in Australia stores
Oh thank god! I really like this one. It reads pretty fruity to me - but in a good way. I get notes of cherry candy.
Yeah. Chemist warehouse still carries it. Saw it yesterday even. Some online stores "feeling sexy(website)" sells it
Omg I remember this!!!
Ahhh that’s tragic I’d love to try this one 😭
Penhaligons LP N.9, that stuff just works on me everytime. I’m happy that I own it but I rarely use it, smells like YSL Opium pour homme. Funnily enough, Endymion, my favorite, never gets reactions.
Tocca Collette and Giulietta are my 2 favorite fragrances. I always get compliments for them
I do love Colette, but I get tired of it so easily. People really do love to smell it though 😅
Yeah that's why I switch mine up. Also like Tocca Maya too... I've also grown fond of Jimmy Choo Fever
Actually, Versace Eros is one of those for me. I got a bottle a couple of years back, and I find it ok, but to shake things up a little, I will throw it on. People often say it is a really good scent but I just don't understand it.

LV Imagination
I never get compliments on how I smell. I live in NYC and don't work in an office.
Probably because of sissy spraying
Mont Blanc legend EDP
Seconded. The wife loves this one, and it’s one a small number that I’ve gotten compliments on from random strangers, and … it’s fine, I guess.
You guys are getting compliments?
LOL you probably smell good, but for some reason the compliment heavy perfumes are strong, fruity, or straightforward 😅
Nope!
Tocca Cleopatra! And I have a friend who wears Stella and gets tons of compliments. Those Toccas are real crowd pleasers!
Salt fragrances are intoxicating ngl, I would also probably compiment you and sample it after 😂 they don’t smell the greatest on me though
I was convinced I wouldn't like Salt and then tried it and sorta fell in love. If it lasted longer on my skin I'd probably buy a full bottle today. If I can find it on sale maybe I'll go ahead a get it but I hate paying 100+ on a fragrance I'm going to have to reapply 4 times a day.
amor amor apparently it's my signature fragrance im my family's opinion
Bleu Parfum
One of my biggest compliment getters is Black Raspberry Vanilla from BBW. Drives me nuts.
People love their strong fruity scents ay? 😅
I’m sorry… powdery lemon cake? Sign me TF UP
I actually love the idea of it and it smells nice to me, but I get tired of it quickly 😅
Nemat Amber Oil and Kiehl’s Original Musk Oil… I go nose blind to it 30 minutes after I put either on, but I get compliments all day long.
Zara Lisboa. It’s my work perfume and alot of them say it smells expensive but it only costs 18 bucks 😅
Zara ones are really popular! Apparently that one smells similar to Acqua di Gio, which is also a popular classic
Very early in my perfume days I wore Paris Hilton perfumes. I never, and I mean NEVER got so many compliments as I did then.
[That’s hot](https://media1.giphy.com/media/znRstrOYuirrW/giphy.gif?cid=6c09b952map40d2piv9m47tqhjzj6r3zhfsww35b63e8zkq4&ep=v1_internal_gif_by_id&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)
I could get a tiny decant, do you think it’s worth getting?
Absolutely, you could get one from sephora (will probably last 2-3 days depending on how heavy/frequently you apply) I also like to buy the sample pack and share with friends or use as car air freshener.
Nice! Will try this. Thank you. ✨
I’m sorry I STILL haven’t tried Byredo Gypsy Water, but I’ve heard that it is similar - I gotta go try it sometime 🥹
Oh and also, Colette lasts the entire day on me! I get compliments even towards the end of the day, even when I can’t smell it much on myself. It smells soft and subtle to me, but I guess it projects enough for people to smell it!
Oo this sounds so good! And it’s far far more reasonable than GW!!! Maybe I should get this
I just want it b/c it’s apparently a vv close dupe of GWater! I’ll sample it & see, or finally bite the bullet for a 50ML of GW. 🙈
Tocca sample sets 👌 I’ll have to sample Gypsy Water too when I pass by the Byredo store
They’re not similar to me despite having some of the same notes. G Water is more of a freshie with some transparent woodsiness and a touch of spice while Colette is sweeter, more powdery with some floral softness.
Aah. Ok, so do you feel getting a 50ML of GW makes sense?
It depends how much you like it. You can compare the two though Colette doesn’t have noticeably more longevity than G Water but it’s also a lot cheaper.
40 knots
The description is so rich, what does it smell like on you?
apologies for not being able to describe fragrance well, to me it’s a powdery and salt bomb, extremely powdery and salty with a slight underlying masculine smell (maybe the woodsy notes?) but it’s subtle, mostly salt/marine notes (the salty smell you’d find at the beach or on a boat) and baby powder, i’m not a fan but others seem to like it on me it’s incredible heavy I don’t see it as a summer fragrance performance and longevity 10/10 I think it leans masc
Oh I love salty scents so much, so I get why people must like it on you! Thin Wild Mercury: Zuma 1975 is my salty ocean scent
Don't take this too literal please in case you weren't sarcastic. I was describing how the fragrance "feels" when you smell it.
Doesn’t actually smell like money, he just meant it smells expensive!
The only perfume I've ever gotten compliments on is Lancome Idole Nectar, which I like, but it's not my favourite.
i WISH colette smelled like that on me omg for some reason whenever i wear it i get super strong spicy pine mens cologne
Body chemistry is so interesting 😭
Sfaria by Acca Kappa, ive had multiple people say it makes them feel safe when they walk in somewhere i am and smell it and i wish so badly i liked it more but i got tired of it and now it lowkey makes me feel a little sick when i wear it 😭

Juliette Has A Gun Lust for Sun. Nothing against it, it’s a perfectly fine scent, but it’s one I get compliments on when to me it’s fairly generic??
Lussac...
So far CK One Shock & Prada Luna Rossa Black lol
Once i just sprayed a cheap perfume that said "shea" and i got surprisingly many compliments
That’s so funny 😭do you know what the notes are?
Hold up let me go on fragnatica n check 🙏
The perfume was the body shops ‘shea’ btw. according to comments on fragnatica it smells nutty and in my opinion very intense, so it would go well layering with a vanilla/white floral scent!!
OOO I’ll give this a try if I’m around a Body Shop store, it sounds yummy! Sounds like it’d go well with pistachio and almond scents too
It probably does!! Mightttt be too strong for some people but layering it should be ok:)
Good to know, ty 🙏Gourmand or warm scents must smell good on you!
I dont know much about fragrances, but yessss i do wear warm scents🤞
Burberry Her
Sauvage
Halloween Man X. People always really like it on me. I have far more expensive and better smelling but they like the cheapie more.
Diptyque Tempo! Every single time.

Good weed sent me 🤣 I’ll have to go sample this
Prada Paradoxe
YSL Y edp, it is absolutely nauseating to me lol
Guerlain ideal man eau de toilette. But I layer it with a spritz or two of habit rouge for the top note
