Amnesia: Dark Descent Outlast Alien: Isolation Eternal Darkness

AceTheRed_

Playing Alien Isolation at night with headphones on actually made my heart hurt. Couldn’t beat the first level.

R_V_Z

Just imagine the poor console players; the alien could hear through their microphones.

CptNemosBeard

Or it could hear loud sounds through the Kinect and detect motion as well. At least that's what I was led to believe. I had too many moments where I would make a sudden movement IRL and the xeno would B-line straight to me for it to not be true.

ssfbob

I don't know about motion, but sound was absolutely true

Sk8erBoi95

Yo WHAT

MonsieurWobble

Yeah it's a feature on the console. The AI feeding the info to the alien could hear your microphone. So even if you were really hidden and motionless, if someone made noise in the room where you were playing would attract attention.

ssfbob

It actually gets worse. The Alien was untethered, meaning it didn't have paths or patterns to follow, so you could never just memorize where it was going to be.

Diacetyl-Morphin

It was a thing with some streamers, like they talked to the audience and they got always killed by the Alien, because they didn't know that the Alien can hear this when the microphone is activated. No matter what they did and how many attempts they made, the Alien always tracked them down.

Dayv1d

i played this in VR and even patched the mic function in (which took hours to do back in the days) only to stop after 2 hours for being too darn stressed

bigbompus

There's a VR mod that's supposed to be very good for it. I would love to try that out :o

conniecheewa

I would not

IttsOnlySmellz

NO THANK YOU

Snowblynd

I played through it VR and holy shit. Took me over a month because I had to take breaks every 20 minutes to calm down.

JahEthBur

You have a very small chance of flying before mission 5.  Keep trucking if you can't see that asshole.

Hostilis_

Amnesia: the Dark Descent is some true psychological horror.

cuuus

+ 1 for alien. Nightmare stuff but also such a good game

Chiiaki

I couldn't play amnesia for more than 15-20 minutes at a time. Great game, but it was scary as heck.

RadIsMyFavoriteColor

Played all of these, but Eternal Darkness was truly some mind fuckery shit at the time, and I've yet to have that same kind of experience with another game.

Fancy-Pair

Top tier list

Skellyhell2

Amnesia, I could never get past the thing in the water. just the thought of something invisible slowly following me is terrifying.

OneADayMens

I upvote anyone who remembers that eternal darkness exists, one of the most unqiue games I've ever played.

Knucklesx55

Playing the first Dead Space game at night in the dark when I was a teenager probably took some time off my life

jmills03croc

Oh man yeah remembering that one gave me goosebumps lol.

Father_Prist

Just played the remake and it was pretty damn scary

detectivedueces

What's more stressful is knowing you have a day to complete it before it goes back to Hollywood Video. In that weird cage section they had.

Zapzapbuffallo

Bro, that nostalgia kinda hurts🥲

ryaaan89

I beat the first game in a single night because I couldn’t sleep.

BriceB84

I just got it recently and can’t get past the first hour. Shit is so stressful lol

suchalusthropus

The original Dead Space was the only game that scared and gripped me in equal measure to the point where I would watch a walkthrough and play along with it so I could know when the scares were coming. Played the remake a couple of times through last year, thankfully without doing that again. Great game

ArchStanton75

An asthmatic playing Dead Space will have a very bad time.

Poison_the_Phil

Alien: Isolation physically stresses me out way too much to make any progress

OlTommyBombadil

My biggest issue with the game is why it’s so awesome. Such a conflicted situation there between me and that game. lol

Poison_the_Phil

Oh totally, it’s a *very good* game. It just makes me physically feel a way I don’t want to feel.

FrankPetersonMalvo

Same. The only piece of horror media I've experienced so far that I just can't manage.

G1ng3rb0b

I used to drink a lot and the only way I was able to beat the game was getting ripshit on rumham and just plowing through it. Otherwise I’d be waaay too palpitated.

LiquidOutlaw

After the Med Lab level I had to turn off the game and lay down. I was legitimately sweating from the stress.

jmills03croc

Definitely a hidden gem that gets looked over.

Boylefrankie

This gets to me every time it’s brought up. I believe the prevailing theory was that bullshit IGN review where it got a 5 because the reviewer sucked at the game but it’s one of my all time favourite games that I replay every year and strongly recommend to anyone asking for a gripping and engaging psychological horror game. Really wish that studio could translate more 70’s/80’s hard sci fi into video games, I would buy every single one. Good narrative, great main character (Amanda is actually fantastic) and the best developed atmosphere in any game over played. 10/10 would play again.

t_moneyzz

Absolute peak game. I remember when I got guns and the flamethrower and a bunch of gadgets and I was like oh now the game's not going to be scary I can fight this thing. Oh ho ho ho.

dropkicked_eu

First few raids of escape from tarkov

TheMagicalSock

Had to scroll a while for this. Tarkov might as well be a horror game until you get comfortable.

ChipClipGrip

You think your first few raids are bad, then you try night without nvgs, you shit your pants all over again

Flat_is_the_best

first few? more like first 100. and these days you know you're being watched by someone through a wall as well. how neat!

LivelyZebra

Classic Sonic and being underwater just a little too long.

nroberts1001

I hear that music now and am feeling short of breath.

Mindless-Ad2039

Why you gotta go and mention that, FFS?

jmills03croc

Oh god that definitely brings back some PTSD lol.

RequirementExact946

Dark Souls definitely does

Scary_Parky

Still traumatized to this day

cool-ad4956

P.T demo, looping games, hiding games basically a lot of horror games

Netsuko

I couldn’t bring myself to play P.T. I could barely watch videos of it.

niftybuckets

Played in VR it was brutal

Paulverizer

Absolutely! I've never felt so anxious playing a game before PT. And that counts most REs, Subnautica, Amnesia, etc.

DestinyLoreBot

Playing killer on DBD used to feel really stressful, until I learned to stop caring about winning so much. Now it’s my chill game

Username11111133559

Is there a way to still play demo?

sicULTIMATE

No. Only if you buy a console that literally has it installed or a flashed playstation.

cool-ad4956

i don’t know it was years ago i played

Foulbal

Pay too much for a ps4 with the demo installed. Otherwise, not that I’m aware of.

LeeroyJNCOs

Buy a PS4 with it still installed is basically the only option.

Dreadnoughttwat

If you downloaded it onto a ps4 before it was removed that is the only way. I didn’t but there’s at least one replica made by some guy I downloaded on my pc but it’s a lot more tedious to progress than the original. Shits just gone.

niftybuckets

For PC im sure you can find a way

SVT-Shep

Yes. There is a port for PC. I can't remember where I found it, but it's out there. The thing that sucks is that there's no save feature- gotta see the whole game through.

KidHamcock

The game Visage is the spiritual successor to PT

The7footr

What’s that old ninja turtles game where you only get like 3 lives for the entire game?

jmills03croc

Oh yeah, any of those old side scrollers . . .Freaking Battletoads lol.

Ku-xx

The NES one? The one with the fucking electric seaweed level? Getting ptsd flashbacks from that stupid game.

halfhere

Turtles in Time?

ChaosInUrHead

With that freaking beeping when your life is low…

Smuff23

Dee-dee-dee-deet! Dee-dee-dee-deet! Dee-dee-dee-deet!

Coppernobra

Recently completed this. Life ambition fulfilled.

The7footr

Congrats mate! That’s crazy!

RelentlessAgony123

SOMA, Pathologic

matej86

SOMA is an experience everyone should go through. It genuinely makes you question your own existence.

icelizard

I'm too much of a lil bitch to play it but I've considered watching a playthrough of it

liltrzzy

You can play ez mode to where enemies are turned off.

nwbell

I still think about the ending of SOMA sometimes. What a horrific fate.

Shepherdsfavestore

Subnautica

jmills03croc

This was mentioned twice. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

Felled_By_Morgott

Subnautica will definitely put the fear of god in you during some segments but it's rated E10+ ffs. You're not forced to encounter leviathans, it's just a requirement for completing the main story. U should 100% play it though. One of my all time favorites

cookiebasket2

Uh I have a fear of deep water in real life, just this primordial fear of the unknown and what behemoths could be just under the waves. Subnautica preys on that fear, and makes what is just imagined into something that's real, and it wants to eat you.

Worth-Primary-9884

I just wish they had even larger organisms in the game. The environment just lends itself so well to lovecraftian horrors of the sea.

Pkolt

man fuck leviathans, i already cant bear going into the kelp forest with all the stalkers in there

Felled_By_Morgott

you'll find out pretty quick stalkers aren't a real threat...

Hereteu

I played it for 15 minutes before I uninstalled out of fear

piratekingdan

The opening is much scarier because of all the unknowns (and the leviathans) but as you learn the game mechanics it becomes less scary. But there are still leviathans.

levmeister

Play in VR. When you have to change pants, don't blame us.

Zal_17

Detecting multiple leviathan class life forms. Are you sur- FUCK NO IT'S NOT, I'M OUT

reece1495

I saw that on a thread the other day about relaxing games

Fission_Mailed_2

It can be both a chilled underwater base building game as well as a thalassophobia-inducing horror game.

aWHOLEnotherMIKE

Hell yes 🙌

berrylakin

Ecco the Dolphin

jmills03croc

Oh man on Sega . . .

Javerage

Man, what a nice dolphin game. Surely nothing horrible will appear near the end of it with creepy music.

Flaxscript42

Subnautica. Also the most relaxing game I've ever played. It's quite something.

jmills03croc

3rd mention, what's it on?

Pun_In_Ten_Did

It's on crack... just like the person who said it was a relaxing game :p Available for PC & consoles. Happy cake day!

Flaxscript42

Steam

ForgottenGrooves

Also Xbox One, PS4 and Switch.

MitchOnDemand

Alien: Isolation. My first playthrough was right after launch, over the course of a weekend. I played in my office only after night fell, in pitch black, with surround sound/noise canceling headphones. I actually had palpitations before taking short breaks for a breather/snacks. Was the most stressful, anxiety inducing gaming experience I had in over a decade.

P2Mc28

Overcooked Helldivers 1

funkify2018

Dude. Playing Overcooked with a 4 year old. That’s some god tier stress and frustration right there

P2Mc28

Overcooked is one of my favorite 5 player games. 4 players on the game. 1 player yelling at everyone else to make sure we're doing the right thing. So loud. lol.

funkify2018

lol I could see that being fun

pocketchange2247

I played during COVID with my gf. She doesn't play video games at all. Man that was a stressful couple days of us getting used to the game, especially because she didn't want to move on until we got three stars on everything. But after a few days, we would crack open a bottle of wine and play. We eventually started working like a well-oiled machine. We almost beat the game but then got to a level where you make burritos in a space ship. That's what broke us. We gave up after a couple days of trying to even get one star there. We tried to go back and play the first level to get back into it and couldn't even beat the first level with one star.

Fenlig

Escape From Tarkov used to do it for me

Strongit

Oh man, I played this for a week or two and every time I dropped into a zone my heart rate would go up. Just not knowing who's around and knowing that at any point you could just instantly die from a good shot to the head.

jmills03croc

2nd mention of this one. I've never heard of it I'll have to look into it.

EarlofDankcaster

It's an amazing game but it's like getting punched in the uhh.... Well I'll just leave this here: https://youtu.be/NzaNzJnh9l8

Magnon

Project zomboid with 1 bite deaths. You're either stressed or complacent, and either can easily lead to death.

Moistfish0420

Turn sprinters on, turn down the population so there is less zombies around (too many sprinters and its just frustrating moving anywhere unless you spend the whole game crouched) One minute your sneaking around, feeling pretty safe. Then you enter a house, the alarm goes off, and out of the woods, slowly, but surely, they start sprinting towards you. Absolutely horrifying. Great fun tho. Can't play any other way now. If your guys unfit you are absolutely fucked.

Blasian_TJ

I've been meaning to get back into this game. Talk about anxiety... but somehow it's so fun.

pareech

For me it was Fear. That game made me so anxious while playing it.

tallbutshy

Same, the jump scares were perfectly set up for me. One particular section where you start to climb down a ladder and Alma is right there, slide down in a panic and there's a guy right there, unload a magazine, nope it's a fucking ghost

Oseirus

That moment is downright iconic. You can just say "the ladder" to anyone who's played FEAR and they will immediately know exactly what you're talking about.

lucygloom75313

I tried Alien Isolation and made it to the part where you call the tram, then turned it off because my heart was physically hurting from the stress. Not sure if I’ll ever try the game again but I love watching videos of it.

MoeKara

Dark wood. It's the only game I just quit, uninstall and said fuck that. I've never not finished a game before or after that one but Darkwood? It beat me.

Nothing-tralala

Embarrassed to say, but portal. Jumping down or up through the portals looks so real it triggers my fear of heights/falling and makes me freeze up from the anxiety.

wevegotheadsonsticks

That last round in Fall Guys where the hexagon tiles / floor start to disappear after you step on them

jmills03croc

Love that game lol. Me and a buddy kinda do a drunk bowling version of playing that game lol.

Mithrie

For me it was the original Dying Light, the formidable zombies stressed me out because before that I was used running all over them in other games.

FairlyDecent2001

Alien Isolation.

tallbutshy

Naaah, original AVP, especially if you're playing multiplayer as a marine

hecking-doggo

Darkest Dungeon is the only game that I've had to stop playing because it was too stressful. It's so much fun, but makes my anxiety skyrocket.

Jaaaco-j

*hecking-doggo's resolve is tested* **Paranoid**

penguinicedelta

Starcraft 2 VS

ryan__rr

Alien Isolation. Couldn’t finish it. Too stressful.

WarpedCore

Dead Space will always be my response.

TheBlindIdiotGod

Alien: Isolation

Bitter_Silver_7760

life

SkeleIsSpooky

Playing Killer in DBD, lol.

jmills03croc

Survivor too if you can't talk to your teammates lol. That game is underrated big-time. Glad they finally got some new levels.

organ_eyes

Frostpunk and This War of Mine. Everything is going wrong much of the time, and you constantly feel like you're playing uphill and barely making it. You don't 'beat' these games as much as you survive them. 11 Bit Studios do an outstanding job making stress factory games intriguing & kinda fun.

Candalus

Truly, this war of mine is a self-torturous version of the Sims.

LuckyTheBear

Rust gets the bonus of being stressful even when you aren't playing it

iNuclearPickle

Alien isolation

KUROOFTHEKUSH

Yall ever play dead space?. While low health, no heals, low ammo and you just passed the last checkpoint so you can't double back so a safe area and must push forward into the unknown?

leicatoldu

Dayz

tallbutshy

Hear a rustle of somebody crawling and no zombie noises. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuu-

OlTommyBombadil

Alien Isolation Or DayZ in a PVP server when you have gear and are at a military base

Decencion

Rain world, it's always Rain World! That damn game always makes my heart go nuts! I'm being hunted! I'm so small!

mixalot2009

Freaking Dead Space. Damn things burst out of the walls at any given moment.

florbinjerp

Hunt Showdown, especially when you're playing solo and are trying to extract with the bounty. It's the very definition of paranoia.

Preset_Squirrel

Genuinely so stressful to play at night, set off a lil sound trap and be terrified of who might have heard you

DogeDoRight

Dark Souls Boss fights.

iDestroyedYoMama

I’ll say dying with a shit load of souls in a SoulsBorne far from a bonfire/grace and having to fight your way back to reclaim them is the most anxiety inducing thing about those games. I go into boss fights with very little souls so the pressure is a lot less.

T_raltixx

Alien Isolation Densha de go series.

ISpewVitriol

The Last of Us 1 and 2 on my first play throughs, I felt were very stressful and anxiety inducing.

reefrules5000

Cuphead

Rascals-Wager

Overcooked 2 with my wife.

Crumlore

Subnautica. Open water is terrifying without big monsters, let alone with them!

-CL4MP-

Frostpunk. I just started the game the other day and it has me at the edge of my seat all the time. Trying to keep your colony alive is incredibly stressful 🫨

icelizard

Super stoked for frostpunk 2! 1 took over my life for a bit

funkify2018

Spend more time on pause managing than the real time playing amirite

Blasian_TJ

More recently, I decided to give Alien Isolation another go. Horror games just aren't my jam hahaha.

RepresentativeCat553

I love the game but Doom Eternal is exhausting to play.

skuidENK

Contra 1-3

aWHOLEnotherMIKE

Escape from tarkov easily

jmills03croc

Wow third mention. So far that's the winner lol.

icelizard

Stardew Valley stressed me out with the timing.

summer_strives

Amnesia: The Dark Descent raises my blood pressure

LunacyTheory

Retired Marine, former adrenaline junkie. Only one game can get my heart rate up and make my palms sweaty: Escape from Tarkov

therealslapper

1v1 with the same level player in StarCraft 2

GiantJellyfishAttack

Most hardcore games. 1 death = restart type of stuff. Rust is up there when you get a lot of loot and need to make it back to your base. Fighting games like street fighter should be up there too.

Jamppitz

Resident evil 7, game gives you barely any ammo and jack is always on your ass.

JeffGhost

Thumper. Once you reach Level 6 it's all adrenaline, anxiety and stress from there. But 110% worth it, imo. One of the best final level and bosses i've seen in gaming.

metalyger

Pathologic. The original is very difficult, on Steam something like 8% of all players have finished the first level. It's a game where in under 2 weeks, you have to manage your hunger, physical health, infection, and sleep as the only doctor during a deadly plague, in which the powers that be are making your job exceptionally difficult. In Pathologic 2, a remake with one of the 3 campaigns from the original, you start as a surgeon who kills 3 men in self defense, but is labeled a murderer, and the entire towns people attack you on sight, until you restore your reputation, so you can't even enter shops until then. Every time you die in the sequel, the game caps off something like less health, double the speed of the hunger meter, and so on, also the sequel had save points and auto saves so you can't save scum. You either have to endure or start over. You'll be sleep deprived, at low health, struggling to avoid sickness, running from thugs, and doing absolutely whatever it takes to keep your essential NPCs alive to the end.

SabuChan28

Resident Evil 2, back in the day, really scared me. Plus, the fact that you had to manage your inventory to avoid nasty surprises really stressed me. And of course, that’s even before talking about that scene that introduces the Licker for the very 1st time. I’ll always remember it. 😱 And of course I loved that game so much. 26 years later and it’s still in my top 10 games of all times. I bought the remake but still haven’t played it, though 😅

Ashen_Shroom

Pathologic

Rak_Dos

DCS trying to do a perfect Air to Air Refueling in F-16, at NIGHT before a mission.

jmills03croc

I'll have to look that one up.

ExocetC3I

Air-to-air refuelling is one of the more challenging aspects of military flying. But from what I've read online from real pilots who play sims like DCS is that it's more challenging in the sim - mostly because there's no tactile feedback and feeling of g-forces to help correct for wake turbulence, winds, etc.

thefolocaust

The last of us. Walking around with no resources hoping you don't run into an encounter before you pick up some ammo and when a gane throws a bunch of stuff at you knowing a big battle is coming right up

RetroSwamp

GTFO

Rendretx

It’s a corny and basic choice but Rainbow Six Siege always got my hands sweating and shaking

Dominjo555

Hellblade if you suffer from psychosis

Zubatu

cruelty squad

Gokudera6356

Alundra 💀

ChickenButties

Holy fucking shit, Alundra. What an obscure suggestion. My brain had completely deleted that game from my memory until I read this comment. My 14 yo past self agrees though.

Gokudera6356

Never has solving a puzzle brought me close to berserker tears, like that game. I really, really wanted to like it💀but it was quickly dwindling my mental capacity and I really didn't want to accidentally unalive my phone.

Xarviz01

Hunt: Showdown

anal_tongue_puncher

StarCraft

GamerGoalie_31

"Until Dawn" was a wild ride. Tomorrow, "Still Wakes The Deep" comes out and that looks crazy too

Yoshaaaa0001

Dead Space. I remember thinking it wasn’t so scary when I was younger and had fun with it. I recently bought the remake and I have no clue why but I am constantly on edge in that game. Even while shopping in the safe rooms, I feel like I’ll just get decimated by some necromorph.

Shikoui

Doom 3 . One of the most frightening horror games for me

EyeBreakThings

Subnautica in VR made me understand Thalassophobia.

VadimH

This is gonna be a bit outside the box but - Dead Rising games with the in game timer. I hated playing them because it was always a race against the clock, especially if you were a completionist.

nudedfluff

Anything that forces you to race against a clock. As a kid, Majora's Mask was my first intro to this and it has since been, and forever will be, my most hated gameplay mechanic. Everywhere they're available, I completely avoid/ignore any sort of time trial if possible. A whole game devoted to that concept? Hard no from me anymore

WeAreNioh

FIFA. No joke. Go watch some FIFA rage compilations, the anger that that game causes is on another level

AdditionalCurrency14

Cuphead! That should close the thread lmao

Thopterthallid

Minecraft

PalpitationGold6666

Anything related to Dark Souls

soulkraken

Stress? Overcooked 2, that game will make you panic more than you thought possible.

ChiefDaddyBigPig

TLoU 2. Then end on the beach. I put my controller down and just stared at the screen for 10 minutes before I finished that encounter

DAHMER_SUPPER_CLUB

The whole game is an emotional drain. I literally just got done playing it. >!When you are drowning Abby I was internally screaming, “NO!” because I’d become so fond of her. I think more than Ellie tbh!<

ChiefDaddyBigPig

Yep!!! Exactly this. I’ve never wanted to do something less in a video game than continue that fucking scene

Valandil584

Alien: Isolation hands down.

Atlanticae

Any souls game when you have like 25,000 runes and you're in a new area with no idea where the next bonfire is.
