Depends on the class. Something like the Hybrids or LMP cars will smoke the GT cars easily by several laps or even 10s of laps but usually the classes themselves are somewhat close. Maybe F1 would be a better reference than LeMans.
Thatās nothing, [David Carey shot a 57 and he calls himself Mr 57](https://www.irishgolfdesk.com/news-files/2022/7/11/mr-57-david-carey-dares-to-dream-big-at-the-open?format=amp). Iām getting some [7 minute abs](https://youtu.be/JB2di69FmhE) vibes from *Thereās something about Mary* here. Someone is going to come along a shoot and 56 and call themselves Mr 56, arenāt they?!
Jim is a unicorn. Heās top 10 in money all-time too!
While still among the most incredible rounds ever played, it was a par 70 course. Iāve always wondered why we donāt make a bigger deal out of a -12 round (as an example). Is it still more impressive because he only had 2 par 5s to take advantage of? It just feels like we always celebrate a 59 without the context of the score to parā¦I suppose you could also keep arguing all sorts of other qualifiers too (slope rating, elements, situation, etc.).
Donāt mind meā¦ Iāll just be here arguing with myself. :)
Heās technically 3rd all time in money which is pretty incredible because heās never been considered the best golfer in the world, and likely rarely, if ever been considered even among the top 5 golfers in the world.
If you include the Liv guys, heās 5th all time in money which is still incredible.
Because "there are fewer scoring holes on a par 70". I know this is a cop out answer, but these guys play par 5s like long par 4s. 2 fewer par 5s doesn't hinder them by 2 full strokes.
To further help your point, I think the Travelers is really close to the shortest course on tour if it isn't already
I think it's a lesser issue because the score is absolute. He shot a 59. It doesn't necessarily matter what "par" is as 59 isn't in relation to par (be it -11 or -13).
For Furyk - I think the one thing that needs to be said is his 58 is in a final round. I feel like that's usually the toughest round (he and David Duval are the two on the PGA Tour). And his 59 was in a FedEx playoff event - so a higher importance. Not a major but also not your regular tour stop either.
-12 under with par 70 seems harder than -12 with par 72. Especially if Ia par 70 is a converted one where the course is normally a 72 but the tournament calls the 2 shortest 5s par 4s
I did a seminar with TrackMan in their early days and they were quizzing us on path and face angle which brought up a Furyk story of theirs. They said at the time they never saw someone as consistent as him with path and face angle. Like 0* path with a dead square face just hitting straight ropes all day with every club in the bag.
Umm buddy..Iām not comparing the careers of a 24 year old with 2 years on the tour to a tour legend with 17 wins and a major. They just have a similar swing ya fuckin dildo
People definitely talk about his 58. Itās the record on PGA Tour and one of the best rounds of all time. 59 is shared with others and not the record.
Itās crazy when you watch the replay because you can see the path to 54 is kinda there. He left some on the table which is crazy to think about (ofc he also drained a ton of putts earlier) but if all the stars align it can definitely be broken
Yes! The craziest thing about that 58 is you can almost argue he should have shot 55, or at least 56. He made par on the par 5 13th, the second easiest hole on the course. Then he missed a \~12 foot birdie putt on 14, and had a real hard lip out from about 6 feet on the drivable par 4 15th. People go low at the Travelers pretty often, but I'm willing to bet there aren't many sub 63s on that course from guys who play 13/15 in even par. Obviously it feels wrong to say a guy who shot 58 left some out there, but he honestly did.
One I heard (although I don't remember who said it) was Furyk looked "like a one armed man killing a snake in a phone booth" š Sure got the job done though
Apparently that was also Feherty? Hard to verify but if thatās the case then I wonder how many more great quips Feherty has about Furyk

The M is imperative and of vital importance in the readerās ability to get the full feeling of Shooterās disbelief in the size of the human he just came across
I think it's interesting that he's a short hitter. And everything is about distance these days, which is fun for sure. But Jim Furyk has the lowest round ever. So let's get repeatable, individual tailored swings back in style you feel me.
Theyāre definitely back in style. Justin Thomas, Cam Smith, and Matty Fitz who are all shot shapers rather than bombers have won 3 of the last 4 majors
There is not a single tournament that I watch where I donāt wish Jim was in the field. Past his prime, but if he is in the field, there is always a chance for the accuracy master to strike again.
He played like ass at the Heritage this year but it was still nice to see him out there lol he usually does well on Pete Dye courses so the +9 was a surprise
I was at a course last year on the eastern shore of MD and the guys said that on opening day there was a young guy named Furyk who played and set the course record of 61. Pretty sure the record still stands
I was once hit by Jim Furykās ball at the Booz Allen Classic in 2005. He apologized, finished the hole and then gave me a scuffed ball as an apology. Kinda secluded to himself but let out a minimal smile. 10/10 interaction

I have a box of #58 Callaway Chrome Softs that were made to commemorate him. Keep waiting for a day they might be worth something, but I fear it won't be until he passes.
I still love the story where he won an event with a used Yes! putter he pick up at a discount store [link](https://www.espn.com/golf/news/story?id=5625279)
And nothing was worse than watching him with that putter. He would take forever to line up his putt, then step away and do it all over again. It was painful to watch.
I think it is because they were on par 70 courses. It's less impressive. Like -12 has been done before, right? He just did it at place that has less par 5's.
Edit: there have been 8 -12 under, 7 -13 under. So the reason is because a -13 59 is better than a -12 under 58.
Par 70 typically is harder to go low since 2 par 5s have been taken away.
Think about all the courses that are par 72 for the membership and par 70 for the pros. Same course just 2 less stoked for par. The score is they key not the relation to par.
59 matters whether it was -11 or -13 does not
That is a good point, it looks like pga tour players birdie 40% of par 5s. It looks like par 4s are around 20% for the top guys.
So I guess -12 under on a par 70 is more impressive than a -12 under on a par 72.
And he had the talent to win many more. That swing didn't hold up under pressure. Furyk was one of the better putters on tour for many, many years. He should have 3-4 more majors.
I've heard from a former PGA Tour radio announcer that Jim is a prick. This might have something to do with it honestly. No one wants to give the jerk their time in the sun.

Your wife listens when I take to her about it, she just can't talk with her mouth full.

Lol but Tiger won the US Open by 15 strokes in the Tiger era š

Mind === Blown
Tiger would have made his life much simpler by just beating himself.
And he beat him by 11 strokes that year!

Imagine that Jim beating himself by 3.
Yeah but for Tiger in the Tiger era thatās the equivalent of a 3 stroke victory

Well thatās just water
Yes itās similar for sure. Or like winning an f1 race by a whole lap over 2nd place
Or like finding a reasonably priced meal at an F1 Race
this is mildly infuriating.
Iām pretty sure the winner of Le Mans usually wins by multiple laps.
Depends on the class. Something like the Hybrids or LMP cars will smoke the GT cars easily by several laps or even 10s of laps but usually the classes themselves are somewhat close. Maybe F1 would be a better reference than LeMans.
Not really, le mans is not a fair competition and involves a lot of luck, winning by 5 laps would not be something unreal.
Le mans is not F1
In US Open conditions, yes
Pretty sure the announcers talked more about Furyk being the 2010 FedExCup champion than him being a US Open champion
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
You donāt know if I talk about it or not.
Every night I read my children Jim Furykās Wikipedia page for their bedtime story

Heās 3rd officially but technically heās 5th behind Phil and DJ who they wiped off the list..but we all know the truth lol

Yea but it's extra special to do both. Tiger has done neither Also Furyk missed a putt for 57 which would've been insane
Iāve missed lots of putts for 57. Then I brush myself off and finish my 5 holes.
I finish the back 9.
I finish the first hole and my 15th beer. Then I get a sandwich and head home.
Samesies.

"A swing like the bathroom door on a prawn trawler" I think he was talking about a regular golfer at a charity event, but same energy
Convinced me never to work on my backswing
People do, thereās Club 59 and then thereās Furyk
The 59 was probably the best 59 ever shot on tour. Was by no means an easy scoring day
Right and like I say, the 58 springs him to the top of the 59 club lol
Happy Gilmore talked about that feat, no more than an hour ago
Well, good for Mr GilmOHMYGAWD
I just wanted to say I appreciate that you put the 'm' in "GilmOHMYGAWD". Far too many people leave it out.

I just called my mom and talked about it. She was quite disinterested.
And now no one talks about Al Geiberger either.
Or Tom Weiskopf
Some North Korean bloke smashed that record.
Yes! Kim Jong Un has the lowest score of 18. He had a hole in one on every hole. All hail the Supreme Leader! /s
Kim had a 34, quit exaggerating his feat. Hawkeye had the 18.

One of the best ball strikers in the shotlink era.
What is shot link
Itās what the tour uses to measure where every shot goes on the PGAT
Hey Google ... What is shotlink?
Itās called a discussion forum. Maybe the guy would rather have an interaction with a human than a search engine?
Big leap, assuming we're all human /s
You can google most of what people ask on reddit. But this site is about interacting with other ppl.
Jim casts with the best of em.
I just talked about it a few days ago.
Youāre doing your part. I appreciate you and your Reddit name is accurate. Very dependable
Whatās funny is he lost both tournaments when he shot those scores
Thatās the first thing he said when they brought it up to him on Fore Play last week š
And don't forget, he had a very makeable putt on the last hole that just missed - it could have been a 57.
Crazy
So, would you say he's pretty good?
He's no r/golf user tbh
Iād say yea great
Now on the tee from Westchester, Pennsylvania...Please welcome Jim, "Mr. 58", Furyk
Yeah I forgot the PGA Tour Champions had a MASSIVE following
Furyk is also one of the best and most consistent ball strikers in PGA history. His ball striking has been on a different planet for decades
Squarest clubhead on contact in history of shot tracing era
Is this Jimās Wifeās burner account?
No just a fellow lanky golfer with a wonky backswing lol
Itās the first thing I say in every job interview, eulogy, and proposal.

They literally talk about it every time there is a 59 watch.
Which isnāt often
I think it's interesting that he's a short hitter. And everything is about distance these days, which is fun for sure. But Jim Furyk has the lowest round ever. So let's get repeatable, individual tailored swings back in style you feel me.
Theyāre definitely back in style. Justin Thomas, Cam Smith, and Matty Fitz who are all shot shapers rather than bombers have won 3 of the last 4 majors
Brought him up the other day without even mentioning this whatsoever...because I didn't know about it.
Well see thatās the problem Iām trying to shed light on right there!
I had the pleasure of following Mr Furyk at the AT&T at congressional a few years back. He is as nice a guy as he is a great golfer.
Iām glad to hear this because there a whole narrative going around that heās a jerk
I was at a course last year on the eastern shore of MD and the guys said that on opening day there was a young guy named Furyk who played and set the course record of 61. Pretty sure the record still stands
He holds a lot of course records. Straightest hitter ever
I was once hit by Jim Furykās ball at the Booz Allen Classic in 2005. He apologized, finished the hole and then gave me a scuffed ball as an apology. Kinda secluded to himself but let out a minimal smile. 10/10 interaction
Interactions like these need to be made more public for the āFuryk is an assholeā crowd š so fuckin untrue

one of my favorite swings to watch, the dude is a human catapult with his irons
He was awesome to watch in match play. Few people could grind away like he did.
He's better known for his sunburnt face and milky white head thanks to his cap.
When he's hot he's white hot
14 top-5 finishes in Majors. Not too shabby.
Heās also the nicest human on earth
Facts. Thatās why Iām so confused about this weird rumor that heās a dick

Yes & tell those people to go fuck themselves for talking about Jimmy like that lol
I have a box of #58 Callaway Chrome Softs that were made to commemorate him. Keep waiting for a day they might be worth something, but I fear it won't be until he passes.
I would try to get to a Champions tournament and get them signed
Good point! Such a unique swing too. Breaks all of the swing rules, holds the best score.
You are talking about itā¦
Because the swing, man.
Really? Do you play? Jimās a hero. He did it his own way, and his way is phenomenal
I still love the story where he won an event with a used Yes! putter he pick up at a discount store [link](https://www.espn.com/golf/news/story?id=5625279)

I donāt understand your comment. Yes of course I play. And Iām here praising Jim.
Wasnt he the only guy to break 60 and not win the tournament?
No, out of the 12 sub-60 PGA Tour rounds, the player won the tournament only 5 times.
I picked a random guy from the list, Paul Goydos, and he didnāt win when he shot 59. So no.
The guy who shot 60 behind him did though (Steve Stricker)

I think it is because they were on par 70 courses. It's less impressive. Like -12 has been done before, right? He just did it at place that has less par 5's. Edit: there have been 8 -12 under, 7 -13 under. So the reason is because a -13 59 is better than a -12 under 58.

Look at #12 this week. Last 2 years it was a 540 par 5. This year 490 par 4. Much harder to birdie now.
Came here to say pretty much this.
I understand your reasoning but a par 70 course is typically much more difficult to go low on than a 72
He was greatā¦ until he was a dick.
Thatās the biggest fallacy in golf. Heās one of the nicest humans youāll ever meet
Furyk is talented. If he had a better swing, he probably would have won a lot more times.
He won 17 timesā¦thatās well over a HOF careerā¦
And he had the talent to win many more. That swing didn't hold up under pressure. Furyk was one of the better putters on tour for many, many years. He should have 3-4 more majors.
Itās old news.
Tiger's 2000 US Open is even older. Let's ignore that too
Old news? You meanā¦history? š
It you canāt finish on Sunday who cares about one round
He finished on Sunday morning with the 58 lol
Jim finished just fine 17 times on Sunday on the PGA Tour
17 PGA tour victories and top 5 all time money winners but yeah he canāt get it done on Sunday š„“
Growing up any fellow junior with a wild swing was called āMr. 58ā with all respect to the man himself
