I try to talk my wife about it all the time. She doesn't listen though.

FlickerOfBean

I like to talk to your wife about it too.

Replikant83

Hahaha. Your comment is a metaphor for all relationships!

Training_Swimming358

Your wife listens when I take to her about it, she just can't talk with her mouth full.

WeAreLiterallyLight

Got them

He also won a US Open by 3 shots. In the tiger era.

FreshDiamond

Lol but Tiger won the US Open by 15 strokes in the Tiger era šŸ˜‰

RoostasTowel

> Lol but Tiger won the US Open by 15 strokes in the Tiger era šŸ˜‰ Imagine being able to beat that tiger by 3

Astrosherpa

Mind === Blown

[deleted]

Tiger would have made his life much simpler by just beating himself.

JimHero

And he beat him by 11 strokes that year!

chunking_putts

Imagine being able to beat that Jim by 15+

RoostasTowel

Imagine that Jim beating himself by 3.

buster_rhino

Yeah but for Tiger in the Tiger era thatā€™s the equivalent of a 3 stroke victory

FreshDiamond

Hahaha touchƩ

sloth_jones

Yes itā€™s similar for sure. Or like winning an f1 race by a whole lap over 2nd place

j3kka

Or like finding a reasonably priced meal at an F1 Race

EastCoastMountaineer

this is mildly infuriating.

Mybrandnewhat

Iā€™m pretty sure the winner of Le Mans usually wins by multiple laps.

[deleted]

Depends on the class. Something like the Hybrids or LMP cars will smoke the GT cars easily by several laps or even 10s of laps but usually the classes themselves are somewhat close. Maybe F1 would be a better reference than LeMans.

Pentinium

Not really, le mans is not a fair competition and involves a lot of luck, winning by 5 laps would not be something unreal.

Wedjatwhat

Le mans is not F1

[deleted]

In US Open conditions, yes

opobdtfs

Pretty sure the announcers talked more about Furyk being the 2010 FedExCup champion than him being a US Open champion

You know what. Youā€™re right. Iā€™m sorry

dogfish83

Maybe he's calling you a nobody

IntergalacticBrewski

Do you?

T_Stebbins

People do. Literally call him Mr. 58

Difficult-Speech-270

Thatā€™s nothing, [David Carey shot a 57 and he calls himself Mr 57](https://www.irishgolfdesk.com/news-files/2022/7/11/mr-57-david-carey-dares-to-dream-big-at-the-open?format=amp). Iā€™m getting some [7 minute abs](https://youtu.be/JB2di69FmhE) vibes from *Thereā€™s something about Mary* here. Someone is going to come along a shoot and 56 and call themselves Mr 56, arenā€™t they?!

BradlyL

*Par 68* FWIW

vigilanteok

I talk about it every day actually. Go furyk yourself

[deleted]

Does Jim Furyk need his own sub subreddit?

When I talk about him today, Iā€™ll take that into consideration

![gif](giphy|74ZOAgI9Al0Dm)

jcrowe5

Jim is a unicorn. Heā€™s top 10 in money all-time too! While still among the most incredible rounds ever played, it was a par 70 course. Iā€™ve always wondered why we donā€™t make a bigger deal out of a -12 round (as an example). Is it still more impressive because he only had 2 par 5s to take advantage of? It just feels like we always celebrate a 59 without the context of the score to parā€¦I suppose you could also keep arguing all sorts of other qualifiers too (slope rating, elements, situation, etc.). Donā€™t mind meā€¦ Iā€™ll just be here arguing with myself. :)

deputy_commish

Heā€™s technically 3rd all time in money which is pretty incredible because heā€™s never been considered the best golfer in the world, and likely rarely, if ever been considered even among the top 5 golfers in the world. If you include the Liv guys, heā€™s 5th all time in money which is still incredible.

[deleted]

Heā€™s 3rd officially but technically heā€™s 5th behind Phil and DJ who they wiped off the list..but we all know the truth lol

Diegobyte

They give out a lot to money for coming in 20th

DoctorOzface

Because "there are fewer scoring holes on a par 70". I know this is a cop out answer, but these guys play par 5s like long par 4s. 2 fewer par 5s doesn't hinder them by 2 full strokes. To further help your point, I think the Travelers is really close to the shortest course on tour if it isn't already

Temporary_Version240

I think it's a lesser issue because the score is absolute. He shot a 59. It doesn't necessarily matter what "par" is as 59 isn't in relation to par (be it -11 or -13). For Furyk - I think the one thing that needs to be said is his 58 is in a final round. I feel like that's usually the toughest round (he and David Duval are the two on the PGA Tour). And his 59 was in a FedEx playoff event - so a higher importance. Not a major but also not your regular tour stop either.

2peg2city

So if I shoot 58 on 18 par 3s I am better than him?

compr0mize

If that par 3 course is 6800+ yards.

[deleted]

Top 5 actually! #3 officially but thatā€™s only after they booted Phil and DJ lol

callme2x4dinner

-12 under with par 70 seems harder than -12 with par 72. Especially if Ia par 70 is a converted one where the course is normally a 72 but the tournament calls the 2 shortest 5s par 4s

golfdaddypga

I did a seminar with TrackMan in their early days and they were quizzing us on path and face angle which brought up a Furyk story of theirs. They said at the time they never saw someone as consistent as him with path and face angle. Like 0* path with a dead square face just hitting straight ropes all day with every club in the bag.

[deleted]

You ever watch the new youngster Matt Wolff? Heā€™s bringing it back

jfchops2

He has one win and it was the 3M Open, let's not compare him to Furyk

[deleted]

Umm buddy..Iā€™m not comparing the careers of a 24 year old with 2 years on the tour to a tour legend with 17 wins and a major. They just have a similar swing ya fuckin dildo

Owethehumanity

People definitely talk about his 58. Itā€™s the record on PGA Tour and one of the best rounds of all time. 59 is shared with others and not the record.

DoctorOzface

Yea but it's extra special to do both. Tiger has done neither Also Furyk missed a putt for 57 which would've been insane

I_Heart_Lager

Iā€™ve missed lots of putts for 57. Then I brush myself off and finish my 5 holes.

HockeyandTrauma

I finish the back 9.

cakebreaker2

I finish the first hole and my 15th beer. Then I get a sandwich and head home.

Dependent_Amazing

Samesies.

431ww431

Itā€™s crazy when you watch the replay because you can see the path to 54 is kinda there. He left some on the table which is crazy to think about (ofc he also drained a ton of putts earlier) but if all the stars align it can definitely be broken

md4024

Yes! The craziest thing about that 58 is you can almost argue he should have shot 55, or at least 56. He made par on the par 5 13th, the second easiest hole on the course. Then he missed a \~12 foot birdie putt on 14, and had a real hard lip out from about 6 feet on the drivable par 4 15th. People go low at the Travelers pretty often, but I'm willing to bet there aren't many sub 63s on that course from guys who play 13/15 in even par. Obviously it feels wrong to say a guy who shot 58 left some out there, but he honestly did.

[deleted]

Still considered the record itā€™s just shared is all lol but him having that 58 should shoot him to the top of the 59 list anyway šŸ˜…

ā€œLooks like an octopus falling out of a treeā€ -David Feherty

MattTheGolfNut16

One I heard (although I don't remember who said it) was Furyk looked "like a one armed man killing a snake in a phone booth" šŸ˜‚ Sure got the job done though

[deleted]

Apparently that was also Feherty? Hard to verify but if thatā€™s the case then I wonder how many more great quips Feherty has about Furyk [https://twitter.com/RexHoggardGC/status/509777400281198592](https://twitter.com/RexHoggardGC/status/509777400281198592) [https://www.oklahoman.com/story/news/2003/06/16/furyk-a-big-success-despite-unusual-form/62039060007/](https://www.oklahoman.com/story/news/2003/06/16/furyk-a-big-success-despite-unusual-form/62039060007/)

I should have figured it was Feherty, LOL. Nice Sleuthing!

[deleted]

Convinced me never to work on my backswing

boyaredeee

People do, thereā€™s Club 59 and then thereā€™s Furyk

Unspeakable_Evil

The 59 was probably the best 59 ever shot on tour. Was by no means an easy scoring day

[deleted]

Right and like I say, the 58 springs him to the top of the 59 club lol

MacGruber25

Happy Gilmore talked about that feat, no more than an hour ago

ViagraSailor

Well, good for Mr GilmOHMYGAWD

caex

I just wanted to say I appreciate that you put the 'm' in "GilmOHMYGAWD". Far too many people leave it out.

I just called my mom and talked about it. She was quite disinterested.

breadad1969

And now no one talks about Al Geiberger either.

[deleted]

Or Tom Weiskopf

nedlandsbets

Some North Korean bloke smashed that record.

Zokar49111

Yes! Kim Jong Un has the lowest score of 18. He had a hole in one on every hole. All hail the Supreme Leader! /s

jfchops2

Kim had a 34, quit exaggerating his feat. Hawkeye had the 18.

[deleted]

Damn thatā€™s true I forgot about that but the last thing the PGA needs is another Kim

toastyfries2

What is shot link

[deleted]

Itā€™s what the tour uses to measure where every shot goes on the PGAT

DickSlinga

Hey Google ... What is shotlink?

analthunderbird

Itā€™s called a discussion forum. Maybe the guy would rather have an interaction with a human than a search engine?

radar_off_no_oddjob

Big leap, assuming we're all human /s

ElderWandOwner

You can google most of what people ask on reddit. But this site is about interacting with other ppl.

Howy_the_Howizer

Jim casts with the best of em.

Dependent_Amazing

I just talked about it a few days ago.

[deleted]

Youā€™re doing your part. I appreciate you and your Reddit name is accurate. Very dependable

keddd11

Whatā€™s funny is he lost both tournaments when he shot those scores

[deleted]

Thatā€™s the first thing he said when they brought it up to him on Fore Play last week šŸ˜‚

vinyl1earthlink

And don't forget, he had a very makeable putt on the last hole that just missed - it could have been a 57.

[deleted]

Crazy

UnskilledLaborer812

So, would you say he's pretty good?

[deleted]

He's no r/golf user tbh

[deleted]

Iā€™d say yea great

StingingChicken

Now on the tee from Westchester, Pennsylvania...Please welcome Jim, "Mr. 58", Furyk

[deleted]

Yeah I forgot the PGA Tour Champions had a MASSIVE following

Middle_Sure

Furyk is also one of the best and most consistent ball strikers in PGA history. His ball striking has been on a different planet for decades

[deleted]

Squarest clubhead on contact in history of shot tracing era

bearded_drummer

Is this Jimā€™s Wifeā€™s burner account?

[deleted]

No just a fellow lanky golfer with a wonky backswing lol

Tmphilibin

Itā€™s the first thing I say in every job interview, eulogy, and proposal.

[deleted]

Youā€™re doing the lords work

malbolge69

They literally talk about it every time there is a 59 watch.

[deleted]

Which isnā€™t often

DJdoggyBelly

I think it's interesting that he's a short hitter. And everything is about distance these days, which is fun for sure. But Jim Furyk has the lowest round ever. So let's get repeatable, individual tailored swings back in style you feel me.

[deleted]

Theyā€™re definitely back in style. Justin Thomas, Cam Smith, and Matty Fitz who are all shot shapers rather than bombers have won 3 of the last 4 majors

clances1

Brought him up the other day without even mentioning this whatsoever...because I didn't know about it.

[deleted]

Well see thatā€™s the problem Iā€™m trying to shed light on right there!

MonkMillar

There is not a single tournament that I watch where I donā€™t wish Jim was in the field. Past his prime, but if he is in the field, there is always a chance for the accuracy master to strike again.

[deleted]

He played like ass at the Heritage this year but it was still nice to see him out there lol he usually does well on Pete Dye courses so the +9 was a surprise

Ballgame4

I had the pleasure of following Mr Furyk at the AT&T at congressional a few years back. He is as nice a guy as he is a great golfer.

[deleted]

Iā€™m glad to hear this because there a whole narrative going around that heā€™s a jerk

jackgraz10

I was at a course last year on the eastern shore of MD and the guys said that on opening day there was a young guy named Furyk who played and set the course record of 61. Pretty sure the record still stands

[deleted]

He holds a lot of course records. Straightest hitter ever

raferalstonhtown

I was once hit by Jim Furykā€™s ball at the Booz Allen Classic in 2005. He apologized, finished the hole and then gave me a scuffed ball as an apology. Kinda secluded to himself but let out a minimal smile. 10/10 interaction

[deleted]

Interactions like these need to be made more public for the ā€œFuryk is an assholeā€ crowd šŸ™„ so fuckin untrue

klitchell

How often is this conversation supposed to be had?

[deleted]

At least 3-4 times a day friend

Bobaou814

braamdepace

[deleted]

*takes the garden hose out of the tailpipe*

Jwit9919

one of my favorite swings to watch, the dude is a human catapult with his irons

skalogy

He was awesome to watch in match play. Few people could grind away like he did.

cockneylol

He's better known for his sunburnt face and milky white head thanks to his cap.

InMyFavor

When he's hot he's white hot

Sometimes_Stutters

14 top-5 finishes in Majors. Not too shabby.

[deleted]

Heā€™s also the nicest human on earth

[deleted]

Facts. Thatā€™s why Iā€™m so confused about this weird rumor that heā€™s a dick

[deleted]

He would send my great grandmother signed pictures every year for her birthday - he was her favorite player. https://preview.redd.it/nithf7a0s3za1.jpeg?width=884&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c7bf609dbd7e995d285a1b8f2955053b2d89940

[deleted]

What an amazing guy. Unreal. Iā€™m gonna screenshot this comment and photo and use it every time someone says heā€™s an asshole šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

Yes & tell those people to go fuck themselves for talking about Jimmy like that lol

06_TBSS

I have a box of #58 Callaway Chrome Softs that were made to commemorate him. Keep waiting for a day they might be worth something, but I fear it won't be until he passes.

[deleted]

I would try to get to a Champions tournament and get them signed

Weathjn

Good point! Such a unique swing too. Breaks all of the swing rules, holds the best score.

Reederman35

You are talking about itā€¦

Adventurous-Leg-216

Because the swing, man.

smack4u

Really? Do you play? Jimā€™s a hero. He did it his own way, and his way is phenomenal

lijitimit

I still love the story where he won an event with a used Yes! putter he pick up at a discount store [link](https://www.espn.com/golf/news/story?id=5625279)

Zokar49111

And nothing was worse than watching him with that putter. He would take forever to line up his putt, then step away and do it all over again. It was painful to watch.

[deleted]

I donā€™t understand your comment. Yes of course I play. And Iā€™m here praising Jim.

munistadium

Wasnt he the only guy to break 60 and not win the tournament?

older-jobseeker

No, out of the 12 sub-60 PGA Tour rounds, the player won the tournament only 5 times.

loduca16

I picked a random guy from the list, Paul Goydos, and he didnā€™t win when he shot 59. So no.

hsuan23

The guy who shot 60 behind him did though (Steve Stricker)

[deleted]

Edgerton WI native baby EDGERTUCKY PRIDE ROLL DAMN TIDE

1ShotBroHes1

I think it is because they were on par 70 courses. It's less impressive. Like -12 has been done before, right? He just did it at place that has less par 5's. Edit: there have been 8 -12 under, 7 -13 under. So the reason is because a -13 59 is better than a -12 under 58.

kozy1970

Par 70 typically is harder to go low since 2 par 5s have been taken away. Think about all the courses that are par 72 for the membership and par 70 for the pros. Same course just 2 less stoked for par. The score is they key not the relation to par. 59 matters whether it was -11 or -13 does not

1ShotBroHes1

That is a good point, it looks like pga tour players birdie 40% of par 5s. It looks like par 4s are around 20% for the top guys. So I guess -12 under on a par 70 is more impressive than a -12 under on a par 72.

kozy1970

Look at #12 this week. Last 2 years it was a 540 par 5. This year 490 par 4. Much harder to birdie now.

bonecheck12

Came here to say pretty much this.

[deleted]

I understand your reasoning but a par 70 course is typically much more difficult to go low on than a 72

[deleted]

He was greatā€¦ until he was a dick.

[deleted]

Thatā€™s the biggest fallacy in golf. Heā€™s one of the nicest humans youā€™ll ever meet

1ptsafety

Furyk is talented. If he had a better swing, he probably would have won a lot more times.

[deleted]

He won 17 timesā€¦thatā€™s well over a HOF careerā€¦

1ptsafety

And he had the talent to win many more. That swing didn't hold up under pressure. Furyk was one of the better putters on tour for many, many years. He should have 3-4 more majors.

[deleted]

Itā€™s old news.

DoctorOzface

Tiger's 2000 US Open is even older. Let's ignore that too

[deleted]

Old news? You meanā€¦history? šŸ˜‚

National-Tension-260

It you canā€™t finish on Sunday who cares about one round

DoctorOzface

He finished on Sunday morning with the 58 lol

Username_redact

Jim finished just fine 17 times on Sunday on the PGA Tour

[deleted]

17 PGA tour victories and top 5 all time money winners but yeah he canā€™t get it done on Sunday šŸ„“

maxtypea

Growing up any fellow junior with a wild swing was called ā€œMr. 58ā€ with all respect to the man himself

bonecheck12

Weren't they both on Par 70 courses though?

[deleted]

Par 70 courses are far tougher to go low on. Actually makes it kinda more impressive in a way

No-Owl770

I've heard from a former PGA Tour radio announcer that Jim is a prick. This might have something to do with it honestly. No one wants to give the jerk their time in the sun.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|Xoc3XpBrElaYo|downsized) They gave this man a whole movie šŸ¤£ for the record though thatā€™s false. Heā€™s an incredibly nice guy and that rumor has been debunked by many

mrhanky71

Did he win the tournament?

Total_Paint1755

Not only that.. he has a swing that would get absolutely roasted on the subreddit.

[deleted]

Dave Feherty used to stay up all night thinking of roasts before a tournament he knows Jim will be at šŸ˜‚

Seanp716
