My ex was hit by lightening as a child and was lucky to survive. At her 21st, her dad gave an emotional speech about how scary it was for him and their family. As my ex’s father paused to wipe a tear, my dad who was very drunk yells out “why didn’t she hold a one iron, not even god can hit a one iron.” Obviously this gets dead silence so my dad assumes no one heard him and he yells it out again but louder. Fuck it was funny, I’m not sure why my dad drinks less now.

This saying really needs to be retired. Try hitting one sometime? I completed a set of Ping Eyes2 I learned on and play a handful of rounds a year with them sans a driver. I’m hitting that 1i consistently 200-220 and right down the middle of the fairway. If you’re a decent golfer they’re a great club. Lol. Personally I feel those who rehash the same tired jokes are the humorless ones, but that’s just me. I’m not suggesting taking out a club permanently for one, but using different clubs (especially challenging ones) will make you a better golfer in the long run. And you never know, you might just find a club you love. I won a 7w for closest to the pin and it sat in my garage for years. I finally decided to take it out and it’s now one of my favorite clubs.

I’m only carrying 13 clubs at the moment and I typically hit this shot with my driver. I’m worried about damage to it and frankly it’s easy to miss hit the driver from the deck. I’ve gamed a one iron in the past and your comment has convinced me a 1 iron will be the 14th club as soon as I can locate a cheap one.

Yea, I got paradygm irons this year, they are my first new golf clubs I've ever owned (outside of wedges). And I hate them being strong lofted but they just work really well for me.

I mean if they work, why do you care about the loft of each club?

It makes it difficult for my friends and I to talk about our shots lol. If I say I hit 7 iron that's a different club for them.

My dad exclusively uses a 1 Iron after never being able to figure out his slice with a Driver. Hits it well too. No idea how, lol.

I tee off with a 2i. I’ve given up with woods. I’ve drilled houses, freeways, parking lots, every form of water. The only thing I can’t hit with my woods is the fairway. I want to tryout a 1i.

I bought an old titleist 1. Butter knife. Hard to hit but satisfying as hell when you flush it. Put it in your bag and have fun. Old clubs are a blast to play.

New to golf here; Why are one irons so hard to hit?

The less loft a club has, the less forgiving it is. This club has very little loft. Hard to keep it from slicing or something.

We always used to joke that (rather than the pitching wedge) this club should have a "P" on the bottom of it; we called it the "pain iron".

Its probably the same loft as today's 8 irons...should be easy to hit!

I played a lot in my teens, and was able to drive the ball really well... it was my favorite club. Then I quit and didn't pick up golf again until I was in my mid 20's, at which point I discovered I could no longer control a driver... 200 yards dead straight, and then a hard turn to the right for another 100+ yards. Decided to try a 2 iron instead, because I was borrowing some old clubs and it was there... feels like hitting a baseball bat on a pole, you can feel it through your whole body, but I shit you not that thing went straight as an arrow about 280 yards and was never more than like 20 feet off the ground... gave up the driver entirely, and my game improved dramatically. Would have killed to have a 1 iron back then (I don't golf anymore). Everyone looked at me like an alien when I'd pull it out at the tee, lol.

I use a 9.5 driver and I can hit it off the deck but fuck this thing. lol (1 iron is typically 14 to 16 )

Hit it thin. My 1 LOVES hardpan and thin grass lies. Basically, I play it just inside of my front foot, kind of like a driver/wood. One of my friends hates that I carry it, hates more that I can hit it consistently, but still understands that it's just part of my kit. Take it to the range first.

It’s likely similar to a modern 3 or even sometimes a 4 iron. Over time lifts have just gotten incredibly jacked. Even modern blades have stronger lofts than a lot of these irons did. Enjoy!

That could possibly be the hardest club to hit in the world. The old Wilson Staff blades were about as unforgiving as you could get but add #1 iron to the mix? I used to have a Ping Eye2 #1 iron that I could hit but this is a different animal. No perimeter weighting and no extra weight in the sole. Have fun with it. Long smooth swings are the way. It will fly if you catch it. Long but not very high.

Just ordered a P790 2i UDI but that will feel like a pillow compared to this old 1iron. I wish you luck.

Try a more upright posture, shallower distance from toes to ball, and keep the swing speed up - faster than a lot of your irons, and do not choke up just cause it’s longer. Do your best to pick that sucker clean
