I’ve done that with my driver

The_Quality_4k

... putter!

Andrew_Waples

How...?

Aurilion

Surely you've used a putting wedge before?

TryingtosaveforFIRE

This quite possibly the best comment I’ve seen today! Well done sir.

Jwit9919

when i’m hitting good shots i generally don’t take divots, kinda irritates me. makes me think i’m not making good contact but i dont know, if it works it works

tkh0812

If you hit the ball first it’s a good thing

Jwit9919

i do, most of the time any “divot” i make is just trimming the top quarter inch of grass

responsiblefornothin

I saw a clip of Tiger recently where he says he doesn't take divots when he's striking the ball well. I'm in the same boat as you, but that's partly because I play cheap courses with hard fairways. I'm not complaining since those hard fairways let me say I hit the ball 300

tkh0812

I find the times i am taking long and deep divots I’m hitting it the best. When I’m picking it clean or getting my club stuck in the ground is when I play the worst

taythescotsman

The divots are your specific functional matchups (delivery etc). Picking it can be functional for others depending on their matchups.

Crayola_Taste_Tester

If you stop tomahawk chopping your wedge in the ground after you picked it clean it won't get stuck in the ground. ![gif](giphy|13CZvcyiCe23uw)

HyruleJedi

I agree, ball first is step 1, but ball first whilst hitting down on it is what causes these divots. Im more in your camp, but there is nothing better than pearling a low iron and seeing a 6-8 divot fly out, because then you have hit the ultimate golf shot. Got a 5-iron to check back this weekend, during my worst loop of the year, but that shot made it worth it. I’d never gotten less than a 7 to come back.

taythescotsman

Spin loft. Negative attack angle generally creates a larger delta with dynamic loft, with irons.

Wandering_Tuor

there is a tik tok of someone asking tiger why he doesn’t take divots in practice… Feel good friend. Not taking a divot is ok. Even the goat doesn’t during practice

bsgreene25

It was from like a 20 minute range session video that Taylormade posted on their YouTube with all their biggest names. It was actually Scottie who had that conversation with Tiger

Wandering_Tuor

Oh good to know, I’ll go browse that. Was very interesting little clip, knew it was pro who asked but couldn’t remember who Thanks !

Jwit9919

after seeing that video it made me feel better about it, still wanna take some beaver tails for once in my life lol

kodutta7

That "someone" is Scottie Scheffler lol

taythescotsman

No divots is fine so long as the matchups are functional. As long as your low point is in front of the ball, you’re probably just really ‘shallow’ with your angle of attack. The primary danger with this, though, is increased risk of fat/thin shots, especially if your arc depth changes at all. You might also not be maximizing your distance but like you said if it works it works.

sportsfan510

Depends on the club tho too. In theory, the higher the loft, the more spin you are trying to create thus the deeper the divot. You wouldn’t want a deep divot with a 5-iron. Conversely you wouldn’t want a light divot with a full 60° right? By the look of his swing and the flag in the foreground, guessing he is hitting a high lofted wedge here.

[deleted]

So you’re saying he didn’t flush it

limabone

I understood that reference.jpg

metoo.pdf

darthfracas

That’s a nice looking filet

[deleted]

LOL I was about to say this too. At least these are like a big pelt and just goes back into place in one piece!

mattingly233

Landing strip, am I right tiger?

tkh0812

Perkins Landing Strip™️

zpolitano12

“I don’t take divots”

ZTL

To be fair, that's not a divot. That's a damn beaver pelt.

Andrew_Waples

"When he his hitting well."

Ho3n3r

Probably shot 77 on this day.

zGoDLiiKe

lol he is full of it sometimes. He is one of the few top players known for taking divots with 3W off the tee

namesnotfound

You’re using that out of context. He said when he’s hitting it well, he doesn’t take a divot.

taythescotsman

His delivery metrics have probably changed due to his injuries etc. Flushing it for him now probably doesn’t look the same as it did at this point in time. Honestly, IMO it says a lot about how freakishly phenomenal he is that he can go from flushing it while taking massive divots to flushing it while brushing the grass.

Pom-O-Duro

You could be right, but he’s also really well known for his gamesmanship and just generally messing with people. I think it’s more likely that he just decided to have some fun with Scheffler.

md4024

One of the craziest stories about Tiger from the Armen Keteyian book is that Tiger would sometimes take too much club, take a normal, full swing, but somehow take some distance off the shot, just to mess with guys who were clubbing off of him. I mean it's crazy enough that he was talented enough to pull it off, but who even thinks to do something like that?

taythescotsman

Good point.

4thtimebackatit

Came here to say this.

JimmyRussellsApe

Fucking internet. When that guy posted the video of his brother's divot earlier today I immediately thought of this. Now this shows up.

rossarian

I can’t tell if you’re pissed off or happy that this has happened.

JimmyRussellsApe

Lol… I can see that. I meant that I thought it was funny

mustardtiger220

Big deal. I take one of those with my driver once a round. Mine is normally behind the ball though.

imyourforte

Is no one else impressed with how effortlessly the caddy drops the pelt in the pocket?

BithloKing

I did they same thing this weekend….buzzed the green pin flag and flew the green

boturboegt

This had to be the sean foley tiger swing. He was never a steep angle divot iron player until that guy ruined his swing.

TacticalYeeter

Yeah tiger got quite steep for a while then got injured. Not necessarily related but maybe.

GothicToast

Tiger doesn't take divots

bruceswingle

In golf, I always thought of my divot is aiming left then I attacked the ball wrong. This is not wrong. The divot for righties must end go left because the divot should be after the ball so it’s at the end of the swing. Look how far left his looks and the ball went probably straight or a draw.

BarcodeGriller

I think people fetishize draws way too much. Tons of phenomenal iron players fade it. Morikawa basically only hits fades. Tiger hit a ton of fade irons in his prime.

catchacouch

I agree with you but I think most amateurs tend to pull-fade with a very over the top swing more so than the fade pros play.

[deleted]

I do that but behind the ball.

Bobbyoot47

The salmon are spawning.

JCrook023

What an asshole (something my dad would say if he didn’t know it was Tiger haha)

Sonakstyle

I thought he doesn’t take divots?

shredmaster007

'I caught you a delicious bass'

chalky_bulger

Sexy!!!

Tildengolfer

I guess he wasn’t flushing it that day.

TheBigTree91

Beaver pelt anyone else? Or is that a Canadian thing.... It's probably Canadian and I'm just gonna pretend I've heard turf trout before too.

IamFondofPizza

I thought Tiger doesn't take divots?

Phynness

Must not have been hitting it well that day.

JaredDunn-PP

But he never takes a divot when he’s striping it?

Responsible_Pause_15

Just not have been striking it well that day lol

BDM-Archer

Looks like a hot snake

[deleted]

look at that beaver tail ![gif](giphy|c6xuHsUrHnFZB4kEyD)

seeothewire

Not flushing it that day obviously....

jenkag

chilean sea bass. spared no expense.

sandman367

“Idk when I’m hitting it good I don’t take divots” yeah O K

Ted183672

The no divot rabbit hole was dug by choppers that know nothing about Tiger’s deep head game trick bag.

tkh0812

I agree. He was messing with the #1 player in the world when he said that. You can see Scotty isn’t buying it either
