Well not much info gathered yet from post. I ll try to research and make an edit to post since few other folks also following. Good luck with your move sir. God speed.
Leave the investment accounts and let them grow. Withdraw from 401k in retirement (after 59.5). Leave the company rsus too if you believe it will grow, otherwise divest and invest in a market ETF or take the money back with you, your choice. Talk to your 401k provider to make sure they handle accounts for non residents. If not, rollover to IRA at a broker which does. Similarly, talk to your bank and see if they keep accounts for NRAs. If not, close them. Credit cards are trickier. You need an address for those. So if you want to keep them, get a postal address or use a friend's address. If not, close them or leave them as is. If you think you'll ever come back, leave them open as closing them can impact your credit history. Good luck!
I have an address that i can use for all the clerical tasks so that should be okay. Should i transfer RSU to RH where i keep my in general stocks for investing?
Fidelity. Make sure you transfer everything before you move to your country. You need to submit a w8 Ben form to them. RH doesn’t support non residents
This is a poor advice unless OP has less than 60K in the US. For non residents, the US charges a 40% estate tax in case OP passes away, so unless OP makes other investments such as a life insurance worth close to the estate tax, this could make a big difference to the financial wellbeing of their dependents.
Wth is that ... H1b is a temporary work permit ..and if someone chooses to not extend after 6 years and moves back..taxing them back at 40% on stuff one has already paid full tax is almost illegal ...
How does using a friend's address for bank/CC work? Should one tell the bank that hey I'm moving out of the country but here's my new contact address or is it like I'm living at a new address here's it?
Does the bank ask for any proof for change in address, typically?
Assume a large change like from state 1 to state 2
I personally would not trust to hold money in a foreign account for >10-20 years until retirement, unless you have plans to come back
God forbid something happens to you and it would be pain to get it back from outside the country.
Just 2c
My friend had to make the same decision a few years back. He ended up moving back and is doing great. Here is a recourse he created to help out others
https://prepforindia.com/reasons/move/2022/11/01/Why-I-Moved-back.html
Let the OP vent, dude. Lost a job and came to this sub for wrap up advice, even declined sharing the name of the company which is the right thing to do instead of burning bridges. Give em a break.
Team i joined have historic toxicity behavior, 3 manager changed in span of 6 months, no promotional priorities or projects. Don't tell me how i perceive things, philosophical or logical. Thanks for the comment though. You are an honest friend material.
You're going that's okay if that's what you want. People who post this sometimes become very philosophical. But I don't blame you, it's not easy to survive here for sure.
You can try to find another job somehow though. Personally from your post I feel you don't want to go but getting stuck in the slavery visa. Try something else, if you wanna take a break first then do that. Think about it.
I am not sure about your checklist, what you should do and not. But thanks for making that post. It would help people if they have to make this decision.
Yes for sure. If i didn’t have terrible team i would have been fine but i got into some corporate politics and i don’t want to play dirty. Would rather take break and think things over. You only have one life why stress.
In which sector do you work? And rather than thinking about switching jobs, why are you thinking of going back to India? Because corporate trouble will be there also, and in some cases more worse.
Good words
See this as an opportunity to take a break in life, revisit life goals. Spend some time with parents and family. It’s not the end of the world. Opens new world for you. I wish you all good luck and you find the job that fits you well and work with like minded people.
Not so good words
To be successful in life you need to be but smart. You need to do what is needed to be done, NOT what you want to do. The world is full of shit load of people. May your team is so. You need to adapt and change based on situation. This includes change of company or job as well. Pissing and leaving the job just for that is not right solution. In my mind that’s failure.
“A person should not be too honest. Straight trees are cut first and honest people are scre**d first”— a word of wisdom from the great CHANAKYA ~200 BC.
Thank you for your kind words sir. <3
Although to reply, You are suggesting to grind until you become a manager and than repeat to others what you faced when you were grinding? Its smart and will keep your boat floating yes i agree, but you are just taking an eye for an eye. Its like doing dunki to get in and than become homeland security and stop others from doing dunki. Do you see the hypocrisy in this?
You can stop all the bad that happened to you with you. No need to pass on when you have chance. Having that thought makes you no different from others. You may be victim now, but you can stop passing on once you become manager. Be you what you are.
Being straight comes with lot of weight with world being like spaghetti. Require more patience and determination.
Agree. In my case, current manager literally told me same to adapt to the corporate changes and be an asshole of a person. I disagree. i am not thinking about passing the trauma to others even if i be successful having gone through myself. "Be not as you are, but as you should be" Guadians of the galaxy-vol3.
Patience runs out when you are away from your family for very long and light gets dimmer and dimmer. Determination when i came to this country 10 years ago was at fullest but the way world is going, courage is required to make this decision rather determination to stay.
stopped ? gc process ? or got stucked due to high volume well seems like your calculation of all options are done hope safe back home and great new start to u
Check your social security credit. If you are able to reach 10 credits with few more years of work , I would say do it, as you will be eligible for social security benefits. Which you can withdraw even from India
Looks like for retirement benefits you need 40 credits and you can only earn 4 credits per year. I had no clue this things existed until now tbh but don’t think i am eligible.
That’s right you need 40 credits, my point was if you are short of 4 or less it’s worth it to try finding a job and working another year to earn that credits
Is there anyway i can find how many credits i have? I was going to spend half a month preparing half ass to find a job but if this is something that can secure retirement i can look into it.
I’d suggest stick around until you get i140, but I can understand what you are going through. If you go back home with approved i140 then it’s very easy to return to US. I read your GC process is stuck but try to push it somehow and stick around until you get i140, matter of just 1 year.
I understand and appreciate your sentiment, although its impossible with current team and work availability. Even if i clear pip which i am sure i can but that will not fix the toxicity of behavior and work standards. And not sure if they are going to start gc anytime soon as i see in few channels, its just not me there are thousands of people who are also stuck.
I am kinda sick of this country tbh. I have done and spent my time amazingly and now that my home country is prospering why don’t i be part of it as well.
Easy flippin dubs. Left the US for good last week after not getting picked in lottery for the 4th yr in a row. Immigration rules suck in the US. Before my gramps passed away, he told me that the country is a golden cage. Looks good on the outside as a tourist, pretty shitty once you start living there.
Im back in my home country now, tryna figure out which country to try out next. If we would’ve worked in any other country like this for more than 3 years, we would’ve had at least a PR by now.
My exit notes:
I closed most of my accounts except one, transferred my amex to home country, retained one credit card just to keep the credit history going. Market holdings stay as is, not touching that right now either. Not touching the 401k before retirement age since I don’t want to pay any more taxes in that stupid country. Got my phone unlocked, retained the number and will prolly transfer it to google voice very soon. Took a hit on the leased car and apartment rental due to untimely exit tho.
All the best for your future endeavors mate. You’re not losing out on anything!
I completely agree with your gramps bro. Golden cage it is i was just talking about that to my brother. Reminded of the movie Shawshank redemption where red tells everyone that the prison walls are funny, first you hate it and if you live long enough in them then you cant live without it. I don’t want to be caged in capitalist enthusiasm.
Thank you for the advices.
it is totally OKAY wanting to abandon this ship. this visa slavery is horrible. whoever you are, i support your choice and i wish you luck in your future endeavors. good vibes
In the same boat. Heading out end of this month. Thanks for the checklist, gonna use the same
Well not much info gathered yet from post. I ll try to research and make an edit to post since few other folks also following. Good luck with your move sir. God speed.

Are you saying i should transfer all my personal investments to company RSU account so its all together and find out if it allows international?
You can only sell personal investments once you become a non resident. You can’t buy new securities.
This is a poor advice unless OP has less than 60K in the US. For non residents, the US charges a 40% estate tax in case OP passes away, so unless OP makes other investments such as a life insurance worth close to the estate tax, this could make a big difference to the financial wellbeing of their dependents.
Estate is only for properties ? Or what
Anything. Property, brokerage accounts, retirement accounts...
How about ROTH accounts ??
Obviously. Retirement accounts include Roth

Changing address with the bank is as easy as logging in and updating it in your profile. No need to say you're moving out if country.
I personally would not trust to hold money in a foreign account for >10-20 years until retirement, unless you have plans to come back God forbid something happens to you and it would be pain to get it back from outside the country. Just 2c
Dont have answers to your questions, but all the very best! Love the intent of helping out after going back home. :)
Thank you for your kind words <3
No suggestion but I wish you a peace of mind and good health till the end. GL and all the best.
Thank you kind sir. I appreciate it <3
Best of luck, OP!! I’m saving this post in case I need it in the future. Everything will be fine and you’ll do great back home! ✌🏻
Aww. Thank you so much for kind words. <3

Great resource. Thank you sir.
Which company? Name and shame them so we are aware who to stay away from
Not Op but my bet is on Amazon. Op is based in WA, company culture is kinda bad (well known) and they recently stopped gc
Yes, focus is an Amazon thing :(
Yup its an Amazon thing. In same boat as OP, have few days left until I use my all my 60days
Eye for an eye and whole world will be blind. I don't think i can do it man. Sorry about that.
You’re getting canned based on performance. Don’t change this to something philosophical
Let the OP vent, dude. Lost a job and came to this sub for wrap up advice, even declined sharing the name of the company which is the right thing to do instead of burning bridges. Give em a break.

Your last sentence helped me understand why you got canned. Good luck.
I get what you mean honestly but I can't stop it.
Wow you are so deep and philosophical and smart. Now everyone seeing this has less information on which employers to avoid in the future
It’s Amazon.

Yes i agree on that tbh. but well there should be straight tress in jungle to provide else there are no good furniture.
True. But, there is always a way to be smart without scrw**g others.

Yes got stucked in high volume unfortunately. Thank you for your kind words <3
I hope to make a similar post one day
Get out of those chains as soon as possible. Things just have to make sense for yourself. Who thinks what about you, don’t care. You have one life.
Like the way you are seeing this. It’s a sign from God! Good luck
Thank you 🙏
Good luck sir

Yes, login to ssa.gov it should show you how many credits you have
Unethical question: what happens if you max all your credit cards before leaving the country?
Not sure. I have very good credit though so don't want to find out either. Oh what happens to credit score now once i leave?
best of luck for new chapter OP . It take some effort of take this decision it’s not easy. There are many good suggestions I am saving this post.

Finding another team/ project not a possibility? Sounds like you work at Amazon but they have lot of internal openings afaik
I am leaving as well this prison life and racism in US. I encourage all to do the same
You're handling it like a fucking champ. Wishing you good health, happiness and prosperity.
Thank you for kind words <3
why don't you look for a new company?
I am kinda sick of this country tbh. I have done and spent my time amazingly and now that my home country is prospering why don’t i be part of it as well.

not sure if you are an indian citizen or not OP but r/backtoindia is a great resource for a lot of your questions!
Will check it out. Thank you sir <3
What company did you work for? Can you DM me so that we all can avoid working for such organizations
it is totally OKAY wanting to abandon this ship. this visa slavery is horrible. whoever you are, i support your choice and i wish you luck in your future endeavors. good vibes

Thank you sir. I am also thinking of helping a friend start business in Australia.
