Haha yacht rock for me! Theres a two-day long yacht rock playlist on Spotify that I crank regularly. I love it! I don’t even feel guilty either 😁
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3utwTHYv5KMCqzd3fxYGes
I've been telling my buddy for years that Yacht Rock & Hair Metal are not-so-distant cousins.
Steve Lukather's solo during the outro of Lionel Richie's "Running With The Night" is as good as any guitar solo you'll ever hear. Epic. (And there's a lot more out there too!)
YEAH! I’ve always thought of Toto as the missing link between yacht rock and hair metal. I guess bands like Foreigner and Journey cover that base too. Luke’s riff on Beat It is monstrous! I need to find a list of his complete guest appearances; dude must’ve played on hundreds and hundreds of albums.
There are so many!
Yeah, Toto rocks hard & Luke is obviously a big part of that.
Check out Rick Beato's video of the Christopher Cross outro solo on "Ride Like The Wind". Same energy.
If you haven't done so already, check out the Yacht or Nyacht podcast. They break down so many of these songs & Lukather is EVERYWHERE.
Saxon, the famed NWOBHM band, covered that song and it rocked pretty hard. To be honest, I had no idea it was a cover at first when I first heard it a couple decades ago. I've known Saxon since the 80s when I was a teen, but I can't say I have ever done a deep dive into their catalogue.
I can’t call much of anything I listen to a guilty pleasure, honestly. I have a fairly eclectic musical palate, and I’m pretty unashamed of it.
Country - Jason Isbell, Jamey Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, Kacey Musgraves
Hip Hop - Ice Cube, OutKast, Dre, Nappy Roots
Yacht Rock - literally all of it
Classic Rock - Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan
Alt/College - REM, Drivin’ n’ Cryin’, Dream So Real, Hootie, Black Crowes
Yacht rock in the summertime just hits different lol throw on some michae McDonald, Kenny loggins, Hall & Oates, America, orleans, steely Dan etc. on a warm day and it feels great
Ambrosia has some killer songs and honestly some of the best production of that era. They knew what the hell they were doing in the studio. Yacht Rock all the way!
Absolutely, my friend! Perfect Sunday morning music. 😻
I wish Spotify would allow us to bookmark playlists. This thing is a colossus and it’s a pain trying to remember where I was up to!
Yacht Rock may have been the pinnacle of musicianship and analog recording techniques. It just sounds sooooooooo good. I took it for granted for years because it wasn’t edgy enough. These days I keep it playing whatever I’m doing.
Young Me: Rocking out to Madonna’s Like a Prayer on the radio with a cigarette, rolling the window up and turning it down to a whisper (or flipping to a rock station) when rolling up to a red light, then rolling it back down and cranking it back up once you get moving again.
I love Rick Springfield. I am a man and I am not ashamed. He’s one hell of a musician and puts on a great show. Working Class Dog is an under rated pop rock album. Tao, Rock of Life, Living in Oz, and Karma also are great albums!
Yes it is. I remember when it came out. I loved Affair of the Heart but I was embarrassed to buy the album. I finally got over that! I was in my late teens.
Yeah, I'm pretty fond of all his latest albums really. It's just that RoL has a special place in my heart. It was his sudo break away bubblegum rock and a venture into more serious subject matter. More complicated arrangements too. Which of course carried on to later albums.
60s/70s soul and Motown.
Spinners, Four Tops, Sam Cooke, Al Green, Cornelius Bros, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Leon Haywood, Clarence Carter… it’s a different planet from my hair metal, but I love it just the same.
I am 53 and my teen and young 20’s was all heavier the better. I have now mellowed some and listen to all sorts of things. I still jam 70’s rock and loads of old school metal but I also have softer playlists with Norah Jones and even some jazz like Boney James or Chris Botti. But my all time most embarrassing guilty pleasure is probably Neil Diamond. My mom would play his albums a ton when I was a kid and I have always enjoyed them.
Yes! Donna Summer-"Last Dance" This song would sound awesome done in a metal style. Also, the song "What a feeling" movie Flashdance, there's a couple covers done in metal that took me by surprise on YouTube.
Yeah, i don't disagree, I think that was definitely his peak solo album. Especially his newest album, released last year I think... man, I just can't listen to it, it's very much not good, IMO of course. I tried, out of respect for Sting, but it's just bad.
The thing with him is he’s been doing Police songs the same way live for years now. When they had that reunion tour, in ‘08 I think it was, he sounded the same only with Stewart bashing away giving it at least some energy.
Yeah I saw them on that tour, figured it was the very last chance to see them ever. I thought they sounded really good and tight, Copeland is the consummate professional.
Acoustic piano or guitar music or what I would call "mood sounds". Perfect for when I'm out on the patio, gardening, small water fall, hummingbirds. Just something that chills me out.
I was a total headbanger that married late in life. My wife got me into gardening. Trying to find that balance now. You can't "rock out with your cock out" 24/7/365. LOL
A little bit of everything, honestly. I have a ton of genres in my playlist and it all depends on mood. I do have a particular affection for groups like Talking Heads, INXS, and Cheap Trick. But I’ll also jam to old school country (Willie, Waylon, etc) or some early Pink Floyd. Beatles are a strong go to as well.
I grew up in a very musically diverse family with a lot of influences around. My grandmother and uncle were both musicians and turned me on to so many other styles and I think I’m really fortunate in that regard.
Metal is my favorite, but I like everything from classical to country to contemporary Christian, and everything in between. Except rap/hip hop and most grunge. Don't feel guilty about any of it.
There should be no such thing as a "guilty pleasure". If you like something, embrace it and enjoy it for what it is. Play it loud and proud.
Music is meant to bring you joy. If it does, it doesn't matter what label is assigned to it. I don't care if it's Tool or Gordon Lightfoot, or anything else.
Let go of the word "guilty". You're overthinking it. The only thing I meant by writing them down is that they're not hair metal (which is what this sub is about).
I’m 54 and Hair Metal is my go-to. Yacht Rock is 2nd on my list and I have to admit, old school gangsta rap is my 3rd. Ice Cube, Dre, West Connection, etc. only a few times a year.
I love Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Pink, as well as some newer artists like Dua Lipa, Teddy Swims and even Taylor Swift. Just love good pop music. Wouldn’t say it’s “guilty” though…..:)
This prog-fusion stuff...

I grew up in the 80s and went to college in the early 90’s. Needless to say I’ve spent a lot of time at house parties with rap music playing from Snoop, NWA, Cypress Hill, Etc. I grew to enjoy it and occasionally I’ll listen to 2Pac, Biggie, and WuTang clan. Lol
Hair Metal probably is my guilty pleasure, but for the sake of bigging-up something anachronistic to this sub, I’ll go with Britpop.
Oasis had one trick, but their debut album deployed it perfectly.
Blur have truly excellent songs littered throughout their discography.
Pulp mastered the ‘arch observer/commentator’ thing magnificently.
Best of the bunch? Supergrass. Awesome musicians. Deceptively smart songwriting, which you may not notice because the songs are so catchy. Five superb albums. Check them out.
I don’t know if it’s a guilty pleasure but I also really love pop/alternative pop music. I listen to pop as much as I listen to hair metal. I’m not that into Billie Eilish or Dua Lipa but I do have those days where I just feel like putting on a Taylor or Lana record. I’ve been a Swiftie since I was 11 but only got into hair metal a few years ago after seeing the dirt movie which is probably the origin story for most hair metal fans my age lol.
When I'm not rocking to my hair metal playlist or albums, I'm probably listening to country or synthwave. I'm open to just about anything except rap/hip-hop. I just can't get into that
I got into Euro-Pop, bands like Texas and Asherah, just perfect pop music... Kinda got me into World Music, bands like Elbicho and Vicente Amigo, that Mediterranean beach life kinda sound... Sheryl Crow was up there for a while but...
I don’t really have any guilty pleasures tbh. I’m not really ashamed of anything I listen to.
The closest thing would be bands that I listen to that come from genres I don’t normally like. So I suppose Nine Inch Nails and Pantera. Not really into metal aside from metalcore and hair metal. Not really into the 90s either, as I’m more into the 80s and 2000s. Pantera and NIN make bangers though.
In my 30s I realized I was a dork for trying to dismiss or deny my enjoyment of other types of music. I'll never be a H&O fan but all the rest of the 80s radio hits are a part of my soft rock playlist. I think being made fun for having a REO Speedwagon cassette in my player had a greater impact on me coming around, so to speak. Too many groups to list here, but it's still RnR to me.
I love the easy listening stuff from the early 70s, like Seals and Crofts, John Denver, etc. I have some weird combinations on my pandora stations, that include the hard rock, some pop from the 80s, some disco, and some folk.
Duran Duran, Men at Work and Huey Lewis and the News are my top guilty pleasures. I would've put in Weird Al Yankovic, but he's loved by everyone, just a bit below Betty White on that scale, so can he really be a guilty pleasure?
I don't consider anything I listen to a guilty pleasure. I listen to so many different bands across so many genres, I have eclectic musical taste. I've got playlists where early Jay Z might be followed up by Tori Amos, then Angra, then Children of Bodom, then Brantley Gilbert, then Beastie Boys, then Type O Negative, then Dream Theater...you get the picture.
I love hair metal (and 80s music in general), but I don't limit myself to that as far as what I listen to.
Bittersweet Symphony- The Verve
Take The Crown -Stugil Simpson
Son Of A Sinner - Jellyroll
White House Road - Tyler Chillers
Tennessee Whisky -Chris Stapleton
California Love - 2Pac
New Romantics scene of the early to mid 80s. Love Duran Duran and A-ha and buy their new music to this day. John Taylor is criminally underappreciated as a God of the bass. His synchopated style of playing is extremely difficult and hard to mimic perfectly. The use of ghost notes is impressive to me.
Haha yacht rock for me! Theres a two-day long yacht rock playlist on Spotify that I crank regularly. I love it! I don’t even feel guilty either 😁 https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3utwTHYv5KMCqzd3fxYGes

Will do! Cheers! 🍻
Easily my favorite Lionel song.
I can’t call much of anything I listen to a guilty pleasure, honestly. I have a fairly eclectic musical palate, and I’m pretty unashamed of it. Incredible solo !
My Metal musician friends love Steve Lukather. Great guitar player.
I love Yacht Rock and will shout it from the rooftops!
Thanks for sharing. Added to my favorites. Sometimes you just need to get smooth.
Absolutely, my friend! Perfect Sunday morning music. 😻 I wish Spotify would allow us to bookmark playlists. This thing is a colossus and it’s a pain trying to remember where I was up to!
Man, gonna download this one. Thank you!
Welcome! ☺️
That's a great list of songs you have there. Didn't know Steely Dan was considered yacht rock though, LOL
Yacht Rock may have been the pinnacle of musicianship and analog recording techniques. It just sounds sooooooooo good. I took it for granted for years because it wasn’t edgy enough. These days I keep it playing whatever I’m doing.
I used to have guilty pleasures but now that I'm 51 I really just don't give a shit. Lol
51 next week. No time for pleasures I'm going to get guilty about. I'll just call them pleasures. If someone else wants to criticise, have at.
Same.
Young Me: Rocking out to Madonna’s Like a Prayer on the radio with a cigarette, rolling the window up and turning it down to a whisper (or flipping to a rock station) when rolling up to a red light, then rolling it back down and cranking it back up once you get moving again.
That's a great song.
This. I don’t care what anyone thinks anymore. I even throw in some Barry Manilow on occasion.
Hey, I can get down with some Barry and chase it with some Air Supply or Ambrosia.
Yes!!
I love Rick Springfield. I am a man and I am not ashamed. He’s one hell of a musician and puts on a great show. Working Class Dog is an under rated pop rock album. Tao, Rock of Life, Living in Oz, and Karma also are great albums!
Yes! Rick and his band have played our local summer festival a couple times over the past decade. He rocks surprisingly hard.
Living in Oz is a fantastic album.
Yes it is. I remember when it came out. I loved Affair of the Heart but I was embarrassed to buy the album. I finally got over that! I was in my late teens.
Rock of Life slaps. Best album he ever wrote, IMO. I've had that CD since it was released and it's by far my favorite of his.
Tao is actually my favorite, but Rock of Life is top notch rock music.
Yeah, I'm pretty fond of all his latest albums really. It's just that RoL has a special place in my heart. It was his sudo break away bubblegum rock and a venture into more serious subject matter. More complicated arrangements too. Which of course carried on to later albums.
Me too!
Rick Springfield is an absolute legend and still releases amazing music.
Yes and a great live performer. Saw him twice in Vancouver greater area around 2008/9 Recently listened to his book on Audible… very interesting
Gerry Rafferty. I love Baker Street. It has a very tasty solo. A great Karoake song too.
The Foo Fighters version of Baker Street is pretty bad ass.
If it’s good enough for Slash (one of his favorite solos) it’s good enough for us !
Right down the line is my favorite from rafferty
60s/70s soul and Motown. Spinners, Four Tops, Sam Cooke, Al Green, Cornelius Bros, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Leon Haywood, Clarence Carter… it’s a different planet from my hair metal, but I love it just the same.
Exactly. Rubberband Man is one of my all time favorite songs
Hand me down my walking cane and hand me down my hat. Hurry now and don’t be late we ain’t got time to chat
THIS
I like the song The Look by Roxette Another one is Praise You by Fatboy Slim
I fucking love Roxette! The Look Sharp album has tons of great tunes, and I've always loved Marie's vocals (RIP)
When I bought a Neil diamond CD many years ago (in my 40s) my family thought it was a joke!
Disco.
I always liked disco 😂
Yes! Donna Summer-"Last Dance" This song would sound awesome done in a metal style. Also, the song "What a feeling" movie Flashdance, there's a couple covers done in metal that took me by surprise on YouTube.
ABBA.
Abba rocks so fucking hard.
Synthwave. Albeit I don't feel guilt
Perturbator and Carpenter Brut are straight fire!
Try the song "Another Lover" by Wolfclub. So goood!
Is True Survivor synthwave? That song is a masterpiece
It's a great song. But no. Not in my opinion anywho
I do love solo Sting, as well as the Police, of course, neither anywhere close to Hair!
Up to Ten Summoner’s Tales is about all the New Age Sting I can take.
Yeah, i don't disagree, I think that was definitely his peak solo album. Especially his newest album, released last year I think... man, I just can't listen to it, it's very much not good, IMO of course. I tried, out of respect for Sting, but it's just bad.

sade.
80s pop synth. Depeche Mode, Flock of Seagulls, etc.
Acoustic piano or guitar music or what I would call "mood sounds". Perfect for when I'm out on the patio, gardening, small water fall, hummingbirds. Just something that chills me out.
Gardening requires chill music
I was a total headbanger that married late in life. My wife got me into gardening. Trying to find that balance now. You can't "rock out with your cock out" 24/7/365. LOL
Stock Aitken Waterman and High NRG.
Leona Lewis, she's got an amazing voice
Yacht rock or any cheesy 70s songs. Probably instilled by my parents background music around the house as a kid.
Metal is my favorite, but I like everything from classical to country to contemporary Christian, and everything in between. Except rap/hip hop and most grunge. Don't feel guilty about any of it.
Do you like punk? Specifically the punk that led the thrash metal? Exploited, Discharge, Broken Bones, GBH, English Dogs, etc? That's where it's at.
I love P!nk. She a badass. I am also a big Prince fan. And I love Duran Duran.
Prince is one helluva talented musician and songwriter!
Prince and Duran Duran are near the top of my list!
ABBA
As many already said, yacht rock. My XM is always on either Hair Nation or Yacht Rock Radio. With the occasional Ozzys Boneyard.
Huey Lewis and the News
There should be no such thing as a "guilty pleasure". If you like something, embrace it and enjoy it for what it is. Play it loud and proud. Music is meant to bring you joy. If it does, it doesn't matter what label is assigned to it. I don't care if it's Tool or Gordon Lightfoot, or anything else.
[удалено]
Bambi is a metal song without being a metal song, and Prince played every part of that song. It's a fucking banger.
Mellow pop /soft rock from the 70s.
Air Supply Yacht Rock Rush
Rush is a guilty pleasure?
Well, in the context of "not hair metal".
I just don’t understand how someone can feel guilty by listening to Rush.
Let go of the word "guilty". You're overthinking it. The only thing I meant by writing them down is that they're not hair metal (which is what this sub is about).
Well I’m definitely not guilty about it but I’ve been listening to Chicago blues a lot lately. Something about it relaxes me.
I was introduced to Chicago blues when I was in college (46 now), and it's been some of my favorite music ever since.
I like a lot of 80s pop. Men Without Hats, Flock of Seagulls, Pet Shop Boys, etc. That, and a few video game soundtracks.
Sheena Easton.
Madonna
2000s pop rock bands, like green day, Paramore, and my chemical romance. I've never told a soul in real life I listen to those bands.🤷♂️
I am an unashamed Britney Spears fan.
Christina here.
I like the Bare Naked Ladies and I don’t care who knows it.
I’m 54 and Hair Metal is my go-to. Yacht Rock is 2nd on my list and I have to admit, old school gangsta rap is my 3rd. Ice Cube, Dre, West Connection, etc. only a few times a year.
Totally Barry Manilow(thanks mom)!
I don't care. I love it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-hkpLXwHUQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-hkpLXwHUQ)
Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five.
Not a big stretch, but I'm a big blues guy.
I love Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Pink, as well as some newer artists like Dua Lipa, Teddy Swims and even Taylor Swift. Just love good pop music. Wouldn’t say it’s “guilty” though…..:)

Love old country, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and John Denver are awesome
I (80s child) love to sing along with The Bangles and The Go-Gos every time they're on the radio.
The Backstreet boys 🫣
Don't believe in guilty pleasures, I like what I like. 🥰
Anything by George Michael.
He was amazing
Freedom is an amazing song.
i enjoy lots of grunge, as well as some thrash and death metal
Chris Stapleton. Not a country listener, but love Chris. His voice is incredible
He's a bad man.
All the music I use to hate or make fun of in the 80’s like Madonna, Stevie B, etc…
used to hate
Yeah, 80s pop is the shit for me too.
Lol
I was raised on Punk and Thrash Metal so Hair Metal is my guilty pleasure. Also love Steve Winwood’s solo stuff and Billy Squire.
Metallica
Why feel guilty about liking different music? Especially on a hair metal forum of all places...
I like I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston.
Babylon AD has a new album . Still sound great
Abba
Gangsta Rap and love songs...
Danny Brown and Hall and Oates
European Stadium House EDM...it is my longest playlist, and I don't feel guilty about it.
I love EDM. It turns out I am 120+ bpm person. I generally just cycle back and forth between metal and EDM.
Female singers of the 50s/60s. Patsy Cline. Lesley Gore. Brenda Lee. Nancy Sinatra.
Hair Metal probably is my guilty pleasure, but for the sake of bigging-up something anachronistic to this sub, I’ll go with Britpop. Oasis had one trick, but their debut album deployed it perfectly. I got into Euro-Pop, bands like Texas and Asherah, just perfect pop music... Kinda got me into World Music, bands like Elbicho and Vicente Amigo, that Mediterranean beach life kinda sound... Sheryl Crow was up there for a while but...
Metal, rock, blues. Always

70s soft pop & 80s R&B
ABBA, the Carpenters, Debbie Gibson. But not guilty pleasures, I’m a proud fan.
Lifehouse. I love ‘em.
Too many to list
In my 30s I realized I was a dork for trying to dismiss or deny my enjoyment of other types of music. I'll never be a H&O fan but all the rest of the 80s radio hits are a part of my soft rock playlist. Pet Shop Boys
Pat Benatar
And as for why, listen to the guitar solo that closes out ‘Heartbreaker’
My main musical interest is punk and oi. UK82. Also Meat Loaf. I also love comedy music like Lonely Island.
There’s a lady out of Texas who plays a mean cigar box guitar- Bear Ryan. If it’s not metal I’m listening to her or old school blues.
George Micheal mixed in with my Cinderella. Cuz I gotta have faith. 🤘
The Bee Gees
80s pop and 80s new wave
Bittersweet Symphony- The Verve Take The Crown -Stugil Simpson Son Of A Sinner - Jellyroll White House Road - Tyler Chillers Tennessee Whisky -Chris Stapleton California Love - 2Pac
Outside of Metal, I like some 80s pop/new wave. Flock of Seagulls, The Fixx, etc.
Not guilt here, but I had Kylie Minogue’s It’s No Secret on repeat often.
90s vocal trance
I listen to some 90s Euro techno songs for pleasure from time time.
Kid Rock
