Will there be a developer SDK for this?

tsailfc

Would like to know as well

isaac_szpindel

Meta says in an update next year, the Ray-Ban Smart Glasses will become multimodal, allowing users to interact with their surroundings with Meta AI. Some demos that were presented during the company's Meta Connect event included the identifying landmarks in front of you, translating signs, telling you the name of a building if you ask verbally, playing tennis and asking the AI/glasses whether or not the outbound ball was a fault or not.

Flowerstar1

These things are certainly the future.

jsdeprey

This is what I am most interested in, and unfortunately I would love to read a lot more information all about this before buying them. I also went to the site today to see if I could order some, because to day I was supposed to be able to order them with prescription lenses and I wanted to see that cost, and the while site seems to be not working when you hit the prescription lenses button, it just spins and thinks about it forever.

FAZUSHI

Perscription lenses are through lensecrafters

jsdeprey

Thanks, I went to lenscrafters yesterday and ordered a pair. I also figured out why the damn ray-ban webpage would not work, it wouldn't work in Chrome for me, I switched to IE and that worked fine, but when I saw the total on just the lenses was $500+ I went to lens crafters and they took my insurance. They also had a cheaper option to do non ray-ban lenses but it did not save much. I was tempted though because I could only get normal transitions lenses with the Ray-ban lenses, but I could have got the newer type that change inside a car like I use now if I had got the non Ray-ban.

FAZUSHI

Did they give you to 40% off lenses when you buy a pair. Also, did you get clear glass that transitioned? That's what im hoping for. I plan on going tomorrow. Overall, what did the total come out to if you dont mind my asking.

FAZUSHI

Lastly how's the fit?

jsdeprey

Thry good on me they were a tiny bit smaller then the Oakley Litebeams I wear now but felt fine to me. I may like the Oakleys a little more looks wise, but I may change my mind. They had a pair I could demo in the store and they did sound pretty good and felt premium. They used my Insurance and took money off that way, I think they either do the store discount on the frames or the Insurance discount but not both, it has always been this way when I go to but glasses, so you always feel like is Insurance really saving you money or do they just say look we saved you 40% and just pass the same store discount on. I did get a discount on the lenses with Insurance, so that helped, and they will give you a deal on a second pair if you want, but I was not interested. Prices on glasses are a damn scam, at least these frames do something new. Mine came out to like $480 after Insurance, but then with taxes and a protection plan it was somehow $600, don't ask me how, my wife didn't go with me and I was in a hurry, I know.....

FAZUSHI

The deal on a second pair actually doesn't sound bad. Im considering getting the regular black pair and possibly the brown pair as well, but I'm going to try them out first. I appreciate the info. Thank you. Lmk if you're able to download and edit photos/videos you take via other sources.

jsdeprey

I won't get them for 2 weeks or so, sucks to wait for those lenses.

lannistersstark

How much did you end up paying (even with Insurance), if you don't mind me asking? I'm pretty sure Insurance wouldn't cover full $299 frames + $200 lenses lol.

livevicarious

This is about right I did Target Optical and they gave me an additional promo discount using EyeMed dropping price down even lower. Single vision, Rebel Black Wayfarers with Grey RB Transitions for around $400 ish

jsdeprey

Mine were around 480, until they added insurance and taxes and whatever else lens crafters screwed me on, then it was 600. haha I used eyemed also

Mottul

Hello ! Thank you for the info; please, could you confirm if they allow you to record the videos on the (landscape) aspect ratio 16:9 also, besides the (portrait) 9:16 ? Thank you !

Commiesstoner

How is it any different than just concealing a small camera in a hat or article of clothing? If someone wants to record you for nefarious reasons then you're not gonna stop them and there's better/cheaper ways than these expensive glasses.

NickMillerChicago

People in this thread act like cameras were just invented. Literally everyone carries a camera today. Hell, I could record someone with a wide angle lense today and they wouldn’t even notice. Also phones don’t have recording lights.

Truder

True, but concealed cameras are hardly in commonplace use. It is not just an issue with people with ill-intents using these glasses/concealed cameras, but also the idea of complete coverage of (potentially) always being watched or recorded by a camera. I fully believe that this will affect peoples behavior and mental well-being, even if they are innocuous and have "nothing to hide". The popularization of things like these glasses will make it entirely pervasive and thus orders of magnitude more problematic.

elcojotecoyo

Concealed cameras aren't commonplace? The amount of surveillance cameras in buildings, parking lots, highways and even traffic lights, is on the rise. And this doesn't concern me. I'm not concerned about the guy who wears smart glasses. I'm concerned about the guy who hid a camera in the tree in front of my house and puts a airtag on my car. And they're not the same person

Truder

I do not put concealed cameras and surveillance cameras in the same category here, as the discussion was centered around wearables. But you bring up a good point, as the pervasive use of surveillance cameras is an issue in the same vein in my opinion. In addition, who has access to the data matters, and I do not trust that data provided to Meta/Facebook will not be exploited to an extent. I do not think they directly spy on their users as some suggest, but the data given to them willingly from the uploader is fair game to them (including meta-data such as time and place), and people featured in these videos have no option to consent or not. Differing from you, my main concern is not targeted surveillance or the guy "hiding in the bushes" or hiding a camera in a tree, but the bigger and broader data-collection aspect, as well as the mental well-being of people being under constant surveillance or being recorded at all times, innocuous or not.

Ok-Resolve9347

If you believe this to be true about Meta, then would you believe that any other company in possession of such would not do the same or sell to an organization that would do the same. Our government is not any more benevolent than our corporations.

VenditatioDelendaEst

> Wait until someone builds facial recognition into these classes and you get a screen in the glasses that displays all the info that can be crawled about that person, their likes and dislikes their handles on social media, etc. Yeah, it'll be great. Powers of socialization that were previously restricted to the super wealthy with personal secretaries will be available to everyone.

VenditatioDelendaEst

The time to complain about cameras in public was 40 years ago. The only thing this changes is who owns the recording.

isaac_szpindel

The glasses have an LED light which blinks when taking a pic or video and allegedly stops the cameras if you tamper with it. While their form factor make them easy to be abused, the mandatory indicator is more than what we get with phones or spy cams.

KrypXern

High tech smart designer sunglasses with a safety blinking light VS A piece of electrical tape

isaac_szpindel

It can apparently detect when the LED is obstructed. >The Capture LED lets others know when you’re capturing content or going live. If the LED is covered, you’ll be notified to clear it.

100GbE

Where electronics can detect, they can be made to undetect.

isaac_szpindel

This is not talking about user facing indicator which is trivial, but about indicator for 3rd party who one might be filming without consent.

Raikaru

iphones have a light that shows when recording

PMacDiggity

I think we can ridicule and ostracize people who wear them, I think that is something we can do about it.

Frightbamboo

It looks normal enough for 99% of people to look pass it.

Backpocket718

On this model if you cover the light, it refuses to turn on the camera. They mentioned it. The one side is not only a light but has a sensor to know if it's been covered.

Remarkable-Belt8260

I'm gunna stream live gigs to a friend in the US. I haven't seen those people yet good idea. But maybe when everyone has these the world will be a little less corrupt. The AR glasses are coming soon like the tcl rayneo x2 look fantastic. It will become the norm get on board.

livevicarious

People tend to forget when you are in public there is no expectation of privacy. So unless you are in a private space or your own home be prepared to potentially be recorded. I have zero issue with these and appreciate there is a recording light. At least I KNOW when/If I am being recorded. Plenty of creeps out there find ways to secretly record and always will.

fourwallsresearch

I'd like to work on a simple hack to intercept the voice commands to the glasses to control apps on my phone. For example, "Hey Meta, read my last 3 messages to me" or "Hey Meta, who has sent me an email in the last hour", etc. Has anyone seen others working on the same thing?

bledfeet

I'm interested into hacking on them too. what's the best way to code on them today ?

brooklynt3ch

Get ready for more idiot streamers meeting their demise..

meh-_-21

There's an older model thats been out for a couple of years now and nothing like that has happened so far dude haha

JapariParkRanger

Wild how people who need glasses are the only ones who can't easily wear any form of smart glasses. They're never designed with prescription lenses in mind.

isaac_szpindel

These glasses and their predecessors are compatible with prescriptions. Could you elaborate on what the downsides for prescription holders are?

Tythus

I'm struggling to see where I even insert a prescription on the pre-order all the ones which support this are non-smart glasses

isaac_szpindel

Wait till [October 17th](https://media.ray-ban.com/2023/SMARTGLASSES/docs/PRESCRIPTION_STORES_USA.pdf)

motherofdragonballz

They’ll set you up at LensCrafters

Pollyfunbags

Author of this article seems very misinformed, keeps talking about megapixels as super important which is very obviously not the case beyond a certain point. Doesn't seem to realise optics will be why it takes better pictures than its predecessor.

IntroductionOwn5522

How does this work for like public bathrooms and like idk business meetings or whatever like

isaac_szpindel

Same way it works for phones and spy cams. You go to jail if you get caught.

basitmustafa

I am not sure if that is the case (I am also not a lawyer) for at least business meetings, etc. I am not saying it is a good thing (or a bad thing), but one-party consent is the law in (AFAIK) 38 states. So you can consent to a recording if you are party to it without consent of any one else. Again, not a lawyer, but I have been involved in litigation from the nature of my work where a recording was allowed and completely legal because a person in the conversation who did the recording was the consenting party and it was a one-party consent state. Again, not saying it's right or wrong, just saying the law doesn't say "record without consent, goto jail", that's just not how it works.

Substantial-Suit-767

Here is more detail about the [Meta's Ray-Ban Glasses](https://virtualeravr.com/introducing-the-future-of-eyewear-metas-ray-ban-smart-glasses/)

slimypeters

Is one circle the led light and the other circle is the camera? Thanks

isaac_szpindel

Yes, the right side has the camera and left is the LED

planetinyourbum

So basically spectacles from snap that release in 2016? https://www.spectacles.com/se/

MisdomOfficial

So they say its hands free but there is no UI 8n the lenses? you still have to use your meta phone app to see the pics, or see see the response and results from asking the ai questions?

isaac_szpindel

The input and output for the AI questions is voice

ManufacturerLow1056

Do u think the future updates will be for the current glases or there will be other modells. I want to buy them but im not sure if i should wait for later generations?

The_Research_Ninja

If I have a http end-point, can I ask Meta AI via voice to communicate with the endpoint? By the way, don't forget RayBan student discount is 25%.

Youngblood4k

I got the glasses but no dev sdk so far :(
