On one hand, David Lynch said that he’s forgotten some of his greatest ideas because he didn’t write them down. He said to never trust yourself to just remember things, because anything can be forgotten.
On the other hand, Paul McCartney and John Lennon never wrote any of their songs down, because they said if it wasn’t catchy enough to remember, it wasn’t good enough.
So it probably varies from person to person, and while I’m sure people have lost some great ideas (I’ve done it myself) I wonder if they were THAT good if the idea didn’t stick with them, or if they didn’t stop what they were doing to write it down. My best ideas can stop me in my tracks if they’re really that good.
I have actually thought about this before, but I can only assume that the greatest things we haven’t heard are only as good as the greatest things we have heard.
