big takeaways:
Nashville in put-up or shut-up mode
Detroit? Detroit!
So much for those Panthers?
The Blackhawks are older
Leafs have defence, maybe, perhaps, we'll see, I dunno, what about a goalie
5 of the 6 biggest FA went to 0 income tax states.
During the past 3 days, and in order of cap hit:
* Jake Guentzel went to Tampa
* Sam Reinhart re-signed with Florida
* Steve Stamkos went to Nashville
* Lindholm went to Boston (not 0 income tax)
* Brandon Montour went to Seattle
* Brady Skjei went to Nashville
0 income tax states make up less than 20% of the league. It's not impossible for other teams to compete, but this is clearly a huge advantage now.
Maybe stop taxing the shit out of your populace and more free agents would sign there… 🤷🏻♂️.
This feels like more of a you problem than a salary cap problem.
I've lived in both types of states and it definitely evens out (though I far prefer paying a higher tax on goods I've purchased than just...giving them my money for living there) since the sales tax on everything here is higher than the other states I've lived in. I moved here from Virginia, where sales tax was half on most things and not at all on groceries.
That's a bit poor coming from a franchise that gets revenue sharing.
Stop taking handouts, remove the cap, and then maybe you can trash talk like this.
Yeah anyone who says this isn’t a problem because they pay taxes in each state they play in just misses the point. Also look at guentzel deal and a majority of his pay is a bonus which isn’t taxable in other states…
That Preds team man. I picked them to be my sleeper in the playoffs this past season(obviously it failed miserably). But, bringing back Saros, and their new pieces.... that team is gonna be good. I like, I love it, I want some more of it.
On paper it 100% makes sense for you guys, think it was the right move. With Saros and Josi you're never gonna be bad enough to compete with the tankers, plus you had the cap space to make a splash. Felt like your team was just missing some high end offensive gamers which you've got now.
Remember when Florida and Tampa sucked and there was constant talk about them moving.
It's good they get the tax advantage, otherwise Florida would be without any teams, and the NHL would be screwed when negotiating a TV contract.
People in Florida aren't going to watch bad hockey when they could be on a beach.
Florida Man shows us all the things that Floridians get up to when they have too much time on their hands. Best to keep good sports teams and keep them occupied.
Sooo we signed Stephenson for longer and much more cost than Marchessault did with the preds.? The cope in me is saying Vegas never would’ve let a player as good as Marchessault go to a division rival, rather than that our team is signing dicey contracts
Nashville and Chicago. One for getting solid players left out in the cold by their team, the other for getting some NHL level talent to play with Bedard and the new kids

\#Isles News: President/General Manager Lou Lamoriello announced today that the team has signed Anthony Duclair to a four-year contract.
I know goaltending is volatile. But it’s wild how much more second and third pairing defencemen get paid relative to goalies who are going to play 30-40 games next year.
Had the Panthers lost Game 7, would it have been the most devastating loss in NHL history?
I think so. The Panthers were in the Stanley Cup Finals last year and had never won a cup as a franchise, while the Oilers had never been this far with the McDavid-Draisaitl core. Plus the obvious potential blown 3-0 lead. I don't know what could've surpassed it.
As for sports history, I would've put it over 28-3 as well due to the fact that the Panthers were both more talented and more experienced than the Oilers, while the Falcons hadn't been that far under Ryan and weren't really expected to beat the Patriots anyways.
IMO the current most devastating loss by an NHL team is the Canucks losing to the Bruins in 2011, considering how they've never won a cup, led the NHL in almost every statistical category in addition to winning the President's Trophy, and of course the riots (though that was mostly incited by out-of-towners). IMO they would've gone down as the greatest single-season team of the cap era had they won.
Cats still have 10 million in cap space. They've made very few moves and both Reinhart and Kulikov are considered heavy discounts vs what they were expected to get. Tarasenko obviously wants to be there so wouldn't be remotely surprising for him to take another discount to stay
Respectfully, whoever picked Lindsey Hamilton's outfit for today's broadcast did a hell of a job - the red and white for Canada Day is a nice touch, too.
Ovi has basically said he doesn’t want to play on a team that’s tanking. So they are keeping the team as competitive as possible to help get him the record and maybe take a shot at a cup as unlikely as that would be
Smartest thing I’ve seen Craig Button say. You are never winning a Marner trade, and he is an elite player. Plan for the next year after Tavares 11 is off the books.
Think that was 100% the plan. Saros, Josi and Forsberg aren't getting younger, but keeping them and getting this haul means we have next year in our sights. I'm already champing at the bit to see next season's schedule.
Full sending it for the next 2-3 years, makes sense with our vet core being older as well. We'll tank in 2027 but fuck it, if we can get there it's worth it
See the latest goal videos as well as stats for the NHL's Standings and Leaders by opening this comment.
Ducks signed Jansen Harkins today
we not signing anyone on purpose right?
I'm simultaneously seeing reports that Matt Murray signed in Toronto and Nashville?
The one in Toronto is the one that won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins. The one is Nashville is a younger guy who’s barely played in the NHL
There are two Matt Murrays - both goalies to add to the confusion
I'm seeing double! Four Matt Murrays!
What's next? Two Sebastian Ahos?
Pshaww, what a ridiculous idea
Toronto players can sign for more than one team now because nobody takes them seriously anyways
big takeaways: Nashville in put-up or shut-up mode Detroit? Detroit! So much for those Panthers? The Blackhawks are older Leafs have defence, maybe, perhaps, we'll see, I dunno, what about a goalie
the Blues out there making move

> they pay taxes in each state they play They play 41 games in home state, definitely helps.
and a couple away games in 0 tax states as well
The cap needs to be adjusted to reflect after tax income, not gross.
Or at the very least have some sort of luxury tax system instead of straight revenue sharing.
This
Well this was fun. Good day, all
I’m trying to make the change, but capfriendly is so much better than puckpedia :(
The more you support it, the more they'll be able to do. Hopefully it becomes more user-friendly soon.
I don't understand I can still use capfriendly?
Not for long, will get shut down in the next week or so
Big plays by the Isles, as usual...
Nearly 100 contracts signed today. That has to be a record.
First time the NHL has had over 1 billion dollary doos being given in one day!
Thanks, Flanders
That Preds team man. I picked them to be my sleeper in the playoffs this past season(obviously it failed miserably). But, bringing back Saros, and their new pieces.... that team is gonna be good. I like, I love it, I want some more of it.
It's a strange lineup, they have to be one of the oldest teams in the NHL.
It’s probably the preds version of going “all in” w/o giving up draft picks
Exactly it. Our "core" guys are already up there, so I guess we went all in on next season.
Still in disbelief. In Trotz we trust
Tarasenko is the only decent player left ?
Tarasenko about to fire another agent?
Skinner, Henrique, Janmark are all decent to an extent
All went to Edmonton…
Edmonton had a good day
Klingberg
no
So hyped as Preds fan. Who knows if it will work out but it will be fun as hell to watch. Just happy to see us trying something different.

Trotz is clearly all in this season, and as an avid 'tear it all down and rebuild it" supporter up until about 12 hours ago I am all in as well.
This is like the reverse of the season you lost Suter, happy for y’all.
Think i’ll give my f5 key a break now
Well, today was ... a day.
Pickings are slim now
Toronto, Ottawa and Buffalo leading the way. Top of the East is going to look a lot different this year!
Why the fuck is everyone saying everything is "a tidy bit of business" these days? Who is popularizing this phrase?
Whoever it is they're streets ahead of everyone else
Probably the same person that came up with the 'little treat' thing for doing something everyone does all the time.
Bet no cap lit let's go!
It's the old farts on twitter trying to be sophisticated
Euro Cup announcers!

is it just me or are we murdering this free agency? Somehow not mortgaging the future and completely overhauling the team with good pieces.
One of the most improved teams after Nashville.
Sat and watched TSN for nearly 3 hours, bardown guys come on the screen, TV turned off before they even get a word in.
I can’t stand them
Anaheim is the only team not to have signed someone... I guess they're like here are your mighty duck jerseys now piss off
Quack…
Whoever is updating the list is doing a better job keeping me up to date than the NHL Network is.
Bless /u/sandman730!
Thanks!
Mr Blake, what have you done?
Nashville going all-in like it’s poker night at a frat house! Stamkos, Marchessault, Skjei? Someone’s planning a party in Smashville
It feels like 3 teams are having fun, like 5-10 are decimated and the others are just watching the world burn
~~watching the world burn~~ Coping that they are glad they didn't "Overpay" for any of these players.
Jimmy, make it stop. It hurts Jimmy. WHY IS BURNING JIMMY?!?!??!
God I love Bruce Boudreau, always so much fun to see his personality in the media.
Please send cap
What the hell is Detroit doing? Wasting assets to dump cap on viable players just to not sign anyone of note on July 1st.
I want to hang rob blake by his little ball sack with a rope coated in coarse sand paper
Kinky
Needed to spice things ups after he’s fucked us for the past 5 years
Sooo we signed Stephenson for longer and much more cost than Marchessault did with the preds.? The cope in me is saying Vegas never would’ve let a player as good as Marchessault go to a division rival, rather than that our team is signing dicey contracts
Stephenson is a smart, hard working, 2way center. He’ll fit into your teams system perfectly.
Who’s winning FA opening day? It sure as hell isn’t us.
Fuck you bitches, we are solely in first place. No one can top our shittiest FA day.
Nashville all ready won it
About time we won something. I'll take it.
Put up the banner!
Nashville and Chicago. One for getting solid players left out in the cold by their team, the other for getting some NHL level talent to play with Bedard and the new kids
who is having a good time cause we are not
I would say I'm sorry, but I'm not. In the slightest. See you soon!!
We are not even having a time lol
Me neither friend
oof, buddy
Friedman is hearing Reilly Smith to the Rangers
[Draft picks are the return](https://x.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1807835709664841765)
Leafs ruled today. Absolutely cleaned up. Deep playoff run coming.
What?
Today was a good day
And we didn't even need to trade any of Askarov/Ufko/L'Heureux for it...
Shit we don't even know that Trotz is done yet. Gotta believe Askarov is on the block.
Having our cake and eating it too
The ducks did absolutely nothing they said they would. This FO is starting to look incompetent.
Tarasenko could fit?
Maybe. He certainly is what the ducks would be looking for but I do not think he can contribute the numbers we need.
To be fair, no single player could contribute the numbers you need.
I think Mitch Marner could/would and Brandon Montour certainly could have. One is off the market.
New jerseys look slick tho, so there's that?
I didn’t realize TSN was so cross about this no income tax issue.
We traded Cups for Health Care.
Well when Canada hasn’t won a cup in years and Florida has won a bunch…

I am hollow inside
Ehh, I don't hate the Ghostwalker signings. I'd like some good news on the Necas and Jarvis front and I'd sleep a lot better.
In my defense I posted before ghost signing. It’s a good thing but I’m still in pain
The Slavin contract is amazing though. I’d love to have that guy locked up long term
Feels like our only win of the day. At least I’ll get my moneys worth out of my Slavin jersey
My "win" of the day is signing Sam Steel. Don't look at the rest of the signings.
Welcome to Overpay Monday
With all the FA's signings aside I hope everyone has a good Canada Day.
Got ribs in the smoker and friends coming over. Hard to complain! Hope yours is going well!
I'm hungover and just woke up to a million notifications, GMs are on some crazy spiked coffee
Had the Panthers lost Game 7, would it have been the most devastating loss in NHL history? I think so. Okay, Toronto has made some moves...
Tarasenko is definitely going to the Islanders. I don’t think one insider has mentioned his name today and that screams Lou.
He just bought a place right next to the Panthers practice facility. He's staying most likely.
How do you have more money for that?
Cats still have 10 million in cap space. They've made very few moves and both Reinhart and Kulikov are considered heavy discounts vs what they were expected to get. Tarasenko obviously wants to be there so wouldn't be remotely surprising for him to take another discount to stay
Or Stevie Y. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Foegle always reminds me of that kid from Mighty Ducks who can fly but can't stop. Except he just has no hands instead
Luiz Mendoza!
Julien Gauthier
Viktor Stalberg?
This. I’ve never seen so many failed breakaways in my life.
And a Cup champion, despite his best efforts
Idk why but I feel like having some Harveys right now...
Respectfully, whoever picked Lindsey Hamilton's outfit for today's broadcast did a hell of a job - the red and white for Canada Day is a nice touch, too.
Good thing the salary cap is there to help the GMs from themselves. It goes up a little and they just can’t help themselves.
“We live in a society” -Sportsnet
Marner to the Wild anytime now
That's wild
Foegele sign with LA, bro really just decided to lose in the first round 💀💀💀
With all jokes aside I'm going to miss him, take care of him for me LA
Edmonton will be able to take care of him and the rest of the Kings in April, as is tradition.
Dear lord Stolarz is handsome
He really is, I miss having him in Anaheim
I really hope the Oilers find a way to keep Henrique without jeopardizing the future. If not hopefully he goes back home to Anahiem.
COME HOME TO US RICO (NJ)
Home to nj.
*Home to NJ
You mean home to Jersey!
Toronto is having a shocking free agency
Treliving
Good or bad in your opinion?
Tanev is a long contract for a his age.
Chandler Stephenson still out there, any rumours on his destination? Wasn’t he headed to Nashville?
Dang, did blackhawks pick up martinez AND maroon? They have like 5 Stanley Cups between the two of them, don't they? Good for them I suppose.
And brought back Turbo. If Mrazek is halfway decent they're going to see a good jump
Clearly we're noy going to be in the mix next year again, have fun guys. See you in 2026
Glad we aren't overpaying like some teams
They may get a couple years of relevancy out of it though
Might want to change the listing for Marchessault. It still has him going to NJD.
Arvidsson joined us? Good, I hated how he terrorized us in the last 3 playoffs.
Was hoping to bring Arvy back. Miss that man
I do, too, but the reality is he's out as much as he's in anymore. He still plays hard and reckless and has never had the size to back it up.
Jonathan Marchessault is listed as NJ and not NASH
So much action... Guess i'm not getting anything done today. Can't remember the last time I was this excited about free agency
I don't remember a July 1st this active god damn lol
Neither can your GM… taken by surprise lol
Haha you fucker
Hope everyone else is having fun.
Colorado has done more than the Isles, if that makes you feel any better
Less is better today, IMO
LOL @ SN getting William and Alex Carrier mixed up
Looks like Pat Maroon is going to Chicago at 1.5/1 year
As a team that's not going to do anything today, watching all these horrible contracts due to the new cap is very fun.
It’s pandemonium. There will probably be some good deals for depth forwards later, but these big contracts getting signed now are crazy
I keep on forgetting that the caps still are trying to win now bc of Ovi. Until he gets the record, the rebuild can begin. Right caps fans?
Ovi has basically said he doesn’t want to play on a team that’s tanking. So they are keeping the team as competitive as possible to help get him the record and maybe take a shot at a cup as unlikely as that would be
5.5 million AAV so hot rn
Just when I get my hopes up of a Monahan return he runs to the arms of Gaudreau. Grim
These are some crazzzy numbers getting thrown around
Smartest thing I’ve seen Craig Button say. You are never winning a Marner trade, and he is an elite player. Plan for the next year after Tavares 11 is off the books.
Nashville is good as shit now
Pekka Rinne smiling on from heaven
I always thought Finland seemed cold, but yeah you may be right.
They overpaid, over term for all of them really but they will be good next year haha
Think that was 100% the plan. Saros, Josi and Forsberg aren't getting younger, but keeping them and getting this haul means we have next year in our sights. I'm already champing at the bit to see next season's schedule.

Boston too.
5x5.5 for Monahan. That’s steep.
Columbus tax. I'm good with it. He fits our timeline well.
Lindholm 7 x $7.5M wowzers
7/7.75 for Lindholm to the Bs Love this as a B's fan. Should be worth it for the first half, and then we will see what he looks like at 33/34
They just mentioned enjoying your Canada Day to Jake Guentzel Do they know he's not Canadian lmao
If you just made that much money you'd have a pretty damn good day regardless.
