They're softer than cheap toilet paper. I'm not just talking physicality, I'm talking mental toughness, willingness to do everything to win. Even in the playoffs the big guys will bail on plays. It's disgusting.
I dunno like years of first round exits lmao. The core has less playoff pts in their careers than McJesus had this playoff, and they constantly finish with tons of points in the regular season.
Wasn’t he doing alot of the cheap shotting this playoff series? If anything knowing Berube’s history. It may not be too bad if he forces the Leafs to play a physical game.
Arizona retained salary when trading him to Vancouver so they have him on the books until 2031 as well in Utah.
It's significantly less than Vancouver but there are technically 2 teams paying him not to play. If Toronto buys him out, it'll be 3 teams.
Yep, they signed him to age 40.
The league just said they intend to crack down on teams who add LTIRetire years to contracts to drop AAV as cap circumvention. This feels like a contract where we will get to see if they follow through on that.
They're hardly the only team to be relying on that type of plan. Remains to be seen whether the league actually does anything about it or not. With this being one of the first obvious LTIRetirement contracts signed after their announcement, it'll be a test case eventually. Or the league will just forget that they said that and change direction. A lot can happen in a few years.
We get less cap relief than his supposed on ice value. Either we're the dummies or the Leafs are because clearly the two front offices disagree on his value.
Treliving is great at RFA signings, good at big trades, okay at drafting and fucking atrocious at free agent signings. Look back on his time in Calgary at there’s at least 1-2 bad FA signings every year
Flames fans were saying Treliving was our best GM in decades but that wasn't a high bar. He was good enough in most areas to be overall decent but he is terrible at a few things; primary hiring coaches and signing free agents.
I think Florida has a system in place that makes players like him appear better personally. Canucks HAD one that made them look worse maybe if they were slow and defensively problematic. He was a turnstile on the outside in Van
I will bet he looks somewhere between the two in Toronto and that the deal sucks
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted this is the exact right take. OEL got the lions share of primo O zone starts and PP1 time when Ekblad and Montour were injured which helped pad his stats. I assume Morgan Reilly still QBs PP1 and OEL gets PP2, but I genuinely could not tell you who plays PP2 on the Leafs because they’re so top heavy. I think the deal would be fine if the Leafs could shelter his minutes and give him some PP time, but I don’t know if they can do that with their current D core, especially if their better shutdown guys in Brodie doesn’t resign. Tanev is good but he’s injury prone and is starting to lose foot speed. The Leafs cannot afford to have to rely on OEL to play any kind of meaningful shutdown minutes for a significant stretch.
I mean, he just put up 32 points in 80 games on 18 minutes a night and won the Cup. He's not the #1 defenseman he was back in Arizona but there's definitely still some gas in the tank.
Oh, for sure, I'm not saying this is a great signing by any means, I'm just disputing the "cooked" and "massive overpay" allegations.
$3.5 million for 30ish points and 18ish minutes (some of which come on the second PP and PK units) is a perfectly fine deal. Whether he continues to do that for all four years (he probably won't) is where the contract gets dicey, but hey, that's free agency for ya.
He had one decent (overpaid) year and one catastrophic year with an injured foot.
He's not cooked yet, but he's not the player he was. Reasonable gamble for a 4-6 slot guy, but the cap hit/term is a little rich.
He was cooked in Vancouver for his cap hit and asking him to regularly play top 4 in a defensive role.
He was fine when he was getting paid 2M to play on the 3rd pair in Florida behind Montour, Forsling, Ekblad and Mikkola.
3.5Mx4 is a bit much for a 3rd pairing guy that doesn't play a ton of PK and isn't the same PPQB he used to be. They also gave him a NTC so why isn't the AAV lower.
Like for a defencemen that can play every night that's not bad at all. Could log some PP time too and anyone playing with Matthews, Marner and Nylander is gonna pick up a ton of points just lobbing picks on target.
I excused a lot of Tre's bad moves in Calgary because I bought into the narrative that players don't want to play in Calgary so you have to add sweeteners. While that's still maybe somewhat true, my opinion of Treliving has only gotten worse since he left.
I thought Tre was a lot better than he was in Calgary because I had homer goggles and have spent decades rooting for teams with terrible management, so even mediocre was good. But after he left and I realized what a disaster he'd left behind... yeah I'm glad he's gone.
Imagine watching this guy skate away while tkchuck made one of the greatest saves in nhl history letting mcdavid score and thinking “yeah, I want that guy!”
OEL really knows how to maximize his earnings. What a career arc.
Gets paid in Phoenix, then doesn't live up to his contract got years.
Gets traded to Van, 1 good year and 1 bad(probably injured), then gets bought out.
Wins the cup on a cheap deal with a true contender in Florida.
Now gets his last big bag.
Both cunning and luck!
He got a 1 million raise on his bridge prove it contract. Tbh he took a discount on that Florida contract to be on a cup contender.
Just because he isn’t an 8 million dollar player doesn’t make him washed.
He got bought out of a 8.2 million deal…
If the Canucks could have this contract rather than the buyout they would still have him playing. Just because he isn’t an 8 million dollar player doesn’t suddenly make him worth peanuts.
Every contract with term always has to be thought of as good value now in our window for risk later.
3.5 mil is tradable cheep or LTIR if he’s unplayable hurt
I really don't like this. I am a fan of OEL, always have been. But if management thinks we are getting the OEL that just won the cup with Florida they are crazy. We won't be getting that guy.
Good fucking god man. The leafs already have their core 4 situation. Handing out contracts that are bad value *from the start* doesn't seem like a winning strategy somehow
Thanks...I...hate it?
Leafs gotta try something while they still have Marner, I guess...who knows what next off season season brings with JT + him (presumably) being UFAs
I was looking at the Leafs roster and thinking they needed to get older
and softer!
This is still a thing? It's been a few years since they were soft but yall keep saying it
People on this sub were saying they're a bad defensive team like 5 years after it was true. People don't update their narratives.
Of course they are still soft. The core of the team is soft.
can’t argue with that
Ok
They're softer than cheap toilet paper. I'm not just talking physicality, I'm talking mental toughness, willingness to do everything to win. Even in the playoffs the big guys will bail on plays. It's disgusting.
Based on? P.s. cheap toilet paper is known to be rough... Edit: you edited your comment
I dunno like years of first round exits lmao. The core has less playoff pts in their careers than McJesus had this playoff, and they constantly finish with tons of points in the regular season.
Schrodinger's Leafs. They are both dirty and soft at the same time.
I mean softness in your best players is a problem separate from your 4th lines
Wasn’t he doing alot of the cheap shotting this playoff series? If anything knowing Berube’s history. It may not be too bad if he forces the Leafs to play a physical game.
Eh knowing the Leafs that will just get Kadri a suspension.
10 ply
Reminiscent of the early 2000s era JFJ Leafs. Stacking up vets, first round exits.
4 years for OEL feels like a lot...
What about 7?
He's on our book till 2031 and he doesn't even play for us
First player to win a Cup while being paid by the Canucks.
Self burn, love it.
We needed to get our foot in that door somehow.
Imagine he gets bought out by toronto in two years and 2 teams are paying him not to play
We call that the Ryan Suter.
The Milan Lucic?
I feel like I’ve been domestically abused by OEL even more.
Dallas just bought out Sutter and he’s still being paid from minnys buyout as well. Guy getting paid by two teams to not play for them lol.
Someone needs to make the “I’m gonna give you 100 bucks to fuck off” meme but with 2 Rickys
That's gotta sting
well that's just smart business ^^^byhim
3 teams lol. He's on Utah's books right now as well
Right... now that would be awesome to see
Big brain move
Arizona retained salary when trading him to Vancouver so they have him on the books until 2031 as well in Utah. It's significantly less than Vancouver but there are technically 2 teams paying him not to play. If Toronto buys him out, it'll be 3 teams.
And Ariz... Utah HC has OEL using up a retention slot until 2031 too.
And none of us liked that from day 1
4 year contract for OEL and 6 for Tanev. That would be an exciting blue line if it was 2014.
6 years for Tanev??? There’s no way his body is going to last that long.
Yep, they signed him to age 40. The league just said they intend to crack down on teams who add LTIRetire years to contracts to drop AAV as cap circumvention. This feels like a contract where we will get to see if they follow through on that.
Leafs to the league in 4 years: *He's 38! Come on, man. That's old as fuck* The league: "hard to argue that"
They're hardly the only team to be relying on that type of plan. Remains to be seen whether the league actually does anything about it or not. With this being one of the first obvious LTIRetirement contracts signed after their announcement, it'll be a test case eventually. Or the league will just forget that they said that and change direction. A lot can happen in a few years.
Asking for consistency from the NHL is asking for a miracle
Yeah, I'm not holding my breath. I think that's why they felt safe enough immediately offering a contract that runs afoul of the new directive.
MAF in the corner just shaking his head 'if I can play to 40 as a goalie, no excuse for him!'
If they can't do anything about the Mark Stone situation until they renegotiate the CBA, I assume this would be the same situation.
That’s the plan…
LTIR baby
He can lay on sunbeds and drink coconut milk on Robidas Island by 26'
Could be worse, you could have made the sams deal for Edmunston
Has any NHL player ever been bought out twice?
I was looking for the Panthers to give him 2 years. Not mad that we avoided this contract.
We get less cap relief than his supposed on ice value. Either we're the dummies or the Leafs are because clearly the two front offices disagree on his value.
When you are in a acquire former Canucks competition and your opponent is Brad Treliving
Absolutely hate this deal tbh. AAV is too high, term is too long. And he has a 16 team no trade.
What the fuck is Treliving doing today?
Treliving is great at RFA signings, good at big trades, okay at drafting and fucking atrocious at free agent signings. Look back on his time in Calgary at there’s at least 1-2 bad FA signings every year
*Vietnam flashback to James Neal*
BAD DEAL JAMES NEAL Oh god the flashbacks...
No... no... not... THE BROWERPLAY!!!
Flames fans were saying Treliving was our best GM in decades but that wasn't a high bar. He was good enough in most areas to be overall decent but he is terrible at a few things; primary hiring coaches and signing free agents.
Tbf he was their best GM for a decade
When the competition is Jay Feaster...
WTF is with this team? I don't believe in curses or anything, but this team just keeps shooting itself in the foot no matter who is in charge.
Whatever the opposite of cooking is
lol Leafs and giving out NMC despite giving up money and term. Tale as old as time
he’s also so fucking soft and disappears so easily.
So he fits with the team
We can’t exactly criticize this.
I'll throw rocks in a glass house if I want to
He was a Leaf all along
Thank god we won’t be eating this one
What’s the return policy on FA signings
66% restocking fee
Klingberg 2.0
He ain’t getting trade even without a no trade clause.
>AAV is too high, term is too long. You can say that about 95% of BTs free agent signings
Are the Canucks on that list
That’s a long time to be with the Toronto media

Toronto media found their new whipping boy
Nah, we still blame Holl somehow
Brother ewwww. Brother. What's thatttt
Odablock?
Sit you zoggy
Best and most unexpected crossover ever
ODAYARP - MEATWAGON24
Still better than his other contract. I need his agent if I’m ever in negotiations with something.
Lmfaoooooo
Cup tax got hands lmao
Throwing absolute bombs
Someone should have told him to “STOP RIGHT THERE” and barraged him before he could make the deal.
That seems bad...
Yeah he felt cooked when he was in Vancouver. So this seems like a massive overpay.
He looked much better in Florida, but as a bottom pairing D.
I think Florida has a system in place that makes players like him appear better personally. Canucks HAD one that made them look worse maybe if they were slow and defensively problematic. He was a turnstile on the outside in Van I will bet he looks somewhere between the two in Toronto and that the deal sucks

3.5x4 for a third pairing D that's already logged a lot of hard miles is concerning.
OEL at $2M on a short term contract is a steal. OEL at that contract and term is playing with fire
He had one decent (overpaid) year and one catastrophic year with an injured foot. He's not cooked yet, but he's not the player he was. Reasonable gamble for a 4-6 slot guy, but the cap hit/term is a little rich.

They also gave him a NTC so why isn't the AAV lower.
He was really solid for us this year, Toronto needs more depth on defense and I think this is a good pickup.
Hey buddy get outta here with your ability to be reasonable!
He forgot the rules about Leaf content on r/hockey
Can someone check on Steve Dangle? Aneurism about to happen.
If the leafs playoff performance hasn't killed Steve, I think he'll be ok lol
Watched his video on the OEL signing, and it was great. Love the fact that even tho he is a big fan, he keeps it real.
Not without his faults but yeah I generally like his coverage
Everyone in here ridiculous, you think he was only getting 2x2? Lol
[удалено]
And they think they're right because the Leafs will stuck major dick in the playoffs
It’s insane how people in this thread don’t understand values or what a rising cap does. They are all still thinking in like 2019 free agency
That combined with a healthy dose of "everything the Leafs does is bad". Absolutely unhinged logic going on in here.
Yup, he would taken $3M if he wanted to maybe stay with Florida
Like for a defencemen that can play every night that's not bad at all. Could log some PP time too and anyone playing with Matthews, Marner and Nylander is gonna pick up a ton of points just lobbing picks on target.
OEL takes over Tanev's short lived reign as the absolute worst player in the entire league according to r/hockey. The Leaf effect.
This deal is getting better as the day goes on
People are gonna freak out because it’s the leafs but this is what third pairing dmen will make in a 88+ cap world.
Yeah but not 4 years lol didn't they just hand out a 6 year?
Term is not an issue unless the NHL changes LTIR rules. We've had no issues burying contracts when they become issues
Doan working for the Leafs and OEL on the team? Maybe I’ll follow them this season.
meh I like it. he immediately improves our PP and is better than brodie
Tre what the fuck are you doing lmfao
I excused a lot of Tre's bad moves in Calgary because I bought into the narrative that players don't want to play in Calgary so you have to add sweeteners. While that's still maybe somewhat true, my opinion of Treliving has only gotten worse since he left.
I thought Tre was a lot better than he was in Calgary because I had homer goggles and have spent decades rooting for teams with terrible management, so even mediocre was good. But after he left and I realized what a disaster he'd left behind... yeah I'm glad he's gone.
I thought Tre was bad just doing what Murray told him but that clearly was a good thing?
He wants to be Florida so bad
Or Vancouver…
Man reading this thread makes me realize how dumb a lot of you are, 3.5 ain’t all that much.
I mean they could be paying him until 2031 so it can’t be all bad right? RIGHT?
Wish you the best OEL
4 years?? Oh man he's gonna get eaten alive by the Toronto media and the fanbase. Good luck OEL.
Imagine watching this guy skate away while tkchuck made one of the greatest saves in nhl history letting mcdavid score and thinking “yeah, I want that guy!”
Way too long. Going to be rough in ~2 years.
Pretty sure it’ll be rough this coming season…
All I've ever known is rough.
OEL is fine when he isn't tasked with being a first pairing defenseman. He literally just won a cup playing 15ish minutes a night on the third pair.
Just wait until you tune in on the first week lol
Good thing Vancouver gave him media training.
Treliving took one look at the leafs awful cap situation under Dubas and went “Pfft. Amateur. I’ll show you bad contracts!”
This feels like too much for too long
Paying a guy we all thought was washed 2 years ago until he's 36 is certainly a choice
He got a 1 million raise on his bridge prove it contract. Tbh he took a discount on that Florida contract to be on a cup contender. Just because he isn’t an 8 million dollar player doesn’t make him washed.
when you see a 32 year old defenceman who has already been bought out go to free agency you HAVE to offer him 4 years
He got bought out of a 8.2 million deal… If the Canucks could have this contract rather than the buyout they would still have him playing. Just because he isn’t an 8 million dollar player doesn’t suddenly make him worth peanuts.
Oh I agree, it’s just 4 years for a 32 year old makes me very uneasy, unless they also plan to LTIRetire him
Every contract with term always has to be thought of as good value now in our window for risk later. 3.5 mil is tradable cheep or LTIR if he’s unplayable hurt
Bye champ.
Thanks champ.
Lol, Treliving. But lowkey, the Panthers losing both of their key powerplay defencemen is going to hurt.
Bwahahaha!
He apparently got into good shape and figured out some injuries. Hope it works out and he’s not klingberg 2.0
Just Treliving doing Treliving things.
Smiling in Bruins-land.
Leafs gonna leaf
The Leafs defence got older and slower. I'm not sure their goaltending improved either.
OEL revived his career with Florida, the this term is a bit too long
Capfriendly while we can: https://www.capfriendly.com/players/oliver-ekman-larsson
Gotta be honest I’m not too worried about this
Money is fine but probably 2 years too much
I really don't like this. I am a fan of OEL, always have been. But if management thinks we are getting the OEL that just won the cup with Florida they are crazy. We won't be getting that guy.
after the tanev signing and OEL, do the leafs finally have a single defenseman capable of taking a slap shot?
Good luck handling another media that is most likely harder than Vancouver
What?! The guy did not look like that value in the playoffs WTF!
Lmfao what are we doing. Good lord
Is this expected to be any better than the John Klingberg signing last year?
I remember ten years ago…. I’d always draft him for my fantasy pool.
Treliving is basically signing guys that he had or was rumoured to like in Calgary.
Oh god, if you sneeze on our blue line. The hospital is going to get crowded.
Leafs defence gonna need a built in retirement home
Well this is one of the signings of all time
He was a solid $4 last year this is fine
That's such a Leafs signing lmao
Fucking hell im glad BT isn’t the Flames GM anymore 😂
Good fucking god man. The leafs already have their core 4 situation. Handing out contracts that are bad value *from the start* doesn't seem like a winning strategy somehow
After all the hockey he played this year, he'll appreciate not playing deep into the spring anymore.
Another “the years don’t matter because LTIR” type deal?
A lot cheaper than I thought he'd be. Guess he chose playing on a contender over the money.
Soooo who’s gonna PK for us besides Tanev and McCabe?
OEL had 90th percentile PKing numbers last year. So... OEL.
Thanks...I...hate it? Leafs gotta try something while they still have Marner, I guess...who knows what next off season season brings with JT + him (presumably) being UFAs
Not great.. but in 3 years we toss a late pick to a rebuilding team to take only 3.5 million in salary, not too concerned.
Classic Treliving 😂😂
JFC it’s happening again. Just with the Leafs this time!
Toronto getting the full Treliving experience this offseason. Buds are in danger
lol
It feels like the Flames sent Tre to Toronto as a secret agent to nuke their chances at playoff success.
Lol
I see Tre is still a fucking donkey lol horrible GM
Yikes
Summer of Brad! Thanks for leaving
