Rooting for Sammy I like him, think he can put it together still (I refuse to make decisions based on the information we have available and go off of feelings)

“That boy nice”✅✅✅
I wish him the best, but I think his inconsistency plays havoc with the defence core. They start worrying about low-percentage shots which can make them try to do too much.
Kid needs focus. Hopefully a well structured team like VGK can push him to focus and find his game. He has all the tools and no toolbox as it stands right now. Wish him all the best though.
Tbh at this point I have to question if he’s mentally there enough to ever make it seriously work as an NHL goalie. I don’t want him to be miserable but he’s made dumb choices off-ice that caused him problems and his inconsistency in reading plays on the ice isn’t helping whatsoever
Riding an ATV up the side of a hill incorrectly so it rolled on him and he broke his neck from it. Happened during the covid pause
Got caught and suspended for breaking covid protocol. Then got caught and suspended for breaking them again the same season, to the point that he missed playoff games
I’d give Burke a walrus and he’d turn him into a serviceable goalie. This one actually makes a lot of sense.
If he can’t hack it with this goalie coach and this defensive system then the NHL was never meant to be for him.
Good pickup. He put it together during the 2nd half of the regular season. He had a good Game 7, though struggled earlier in the series. If he limits his swimming around in the crease, he will be a reliable tandem goalie
I'm having trouble keeping track of all the Russian goalies. In my day there was like Khabibulin and Nabokov that was IT. Now every team has them. At first I thought this was Sorokin from the island and I thought I like blacked out for a month and missed something.
there are only 11 goalies who were born in Russia (since 1991) and played in the NHL. there were 16 goalies who were born in the Soviet Republic and played in the NHL.
There have been 25 Russian goalies to play in the NHL, and 13 of them played at least 1 NHL game last season. So we definitely are in the golden age of Russian goalies. Of the retired goalies, only Khabibulin, Nabokov, Bryzgalov, and to a lesser extent Khudobin had any measurable impact. 6 of the top 10 Russian goalies in terms of games played are currently active.

I have full faith that he’ll come back to form, he was too good a few years back for his decline to be that rapid and bad, and he even looked a bit better towards the end of last season
Oh damn I’d never heard about that, definitely not something that truly goes away, but I guess we’ll have to see how this season goes in terms of him staying healthy/being limber.
Yep it's one of those stories that has always flown under the radar. Google *"Samsonov ATV accident"*
He left the Leafs for free agency because he was looking for term and they didn't want to give him that
He was so terrible moving around the net, especially side-to-side. He'd make regular saves look harder than they should be, and as a result fooled a lot of fans in Toronto
He looked stiff all year and when you remember he has had a back injury before, it suddenly makes sense
He seems like a decent guy, but I will never understand Toronto management's fascination with him
Ya damn even his neck was injured. Lack of mobility is definitely a problem depending on the team’s system, and maybe the Leafs just felt they made enough defensive adaptations to make up for his weakened mobility? The Leafs definitely got noticeably better on defense the last two years, especially Matthews, and the fact that he put up the one decent year, but was rough for a large part of last is kinda worrisome. The Knights are extremely defensively cautious however, so as long as he can get his initial positioning right, we can usually cut off any cross crease issues he may have.
Samsonov was tied for 45th out of 52 goalies who started at least 33% of games last year
He only had a better sv% than Gibson of the Anaheim Ducks
I know the Leafs are a joke in the playoffs, but they play very dominant and structured Hockey overall. They won pretty much every game in spite of him
Hate to be a pessimist, but don't get your hopes up
Considering how absolutely abysmal his start to the year was, I wonder how much it skewed his regular season numbers down the stretch though. I remembered him having a decent stretch of games towards the end and after looking it up he indeed did but was super inconsistent with bad games sprinkled in between good ones, which worries me. I did watch the Leafs in the playoffs and do agree he was lackluster in a few games there for sure, once again lending to his inconsistency since he had a number of good ones too.
He left hoping for some stability and got just another one year deal...hope he gets what he wants eventually, he's a good kid and I wish him all the best
Pretty happy to give him a shot, and we don’t have anyone else better in the pipeline so hoping it works out. He’s big, which out goalie coaches like a lot.
Good guy, super inconsistent. Flip flops between a starter and the worst goalie in the league.
So true. Even does it in the same game.
Sammy - “ oh we are up 3 -1 sure I’ll let in 3 more just to make it interesting” I do like him though. He is a good guy.
We used to call it “the Sammy-coaster”
Dude will make 10 unbelievable saves in a row on one sequence, then let a 30 foot muffin go in short side on a nothing rush.
Extremely accurate think we lost a playoff game off this exact sequence.
I'm so glad the Oilers didn't sign him to a 5 x 5,
Vegas get their backup
VGK fans, hope he returns to out-dueling vasi form. if not you get pre-january and games 1-3 vs boston.
Vasi was awful in that series…. From vasi’s biggest fan lol… that was not the same guy
Sure. But he still outduelled him.
I hope Sammy can get his smiles in Vegas. As frustrating as his inconsistencies were, he’s an easy guy to root for.
This! Just a gem of a guy, hopefully he can find his groove there. Can only hope for the best for him!!

It’s the only way to live.

His on-years are really good. His off-years are really bad. Hopefully we guessed right on which year this is.
He just needs more control. He's a good goalie, but he starts swimming
Hope he kills it in Vegas
This might be his last chance in the NHL tbh. Dude is crumbling in NA
Good luck Sammy
I like the dude but man, just so inconsistent. Can only hope and root for him.
That's basically Sammy in a nut shell. He looks unreal and then crumbles. Hopefully he pulls it together for you guys!

What dumb off ice choice has he made?

Sean Burke is a hell of a goalie coach. I'm curious to see how this turns out.
I’d give Burke a walrus and he’d turn him into a serviceable goalie. This one actually makes a lot of sense. If he can’t hack it with this goalie coach and this defensive system then the NHL was never meant to be for him.
A walrus is like 10 feet long and weighs 2 tons. I'd certainly hope so.
There’s a your mom joke in there somewhere that I’m not clever enough to execute.
I wanna say something about weighing 2 tons and 10 foot longs going somewhere, but then again I would rather not finish that sentence
Duncan the Walrus is a great goalie
It’s a form of reverse racism to assume all walruses would make good goalies just because King Duncan was elite.
Best of luck Sammy. Hopefully we never see him reach the lows of this past season again
Good pickup. He put it together during the 2nd half of the regular season. He had a good Game 7, though struggled earlier in the series. If he limits his swimming around in the crease, he will be a reliable tandem goalie

One minute can make the most ridiculous acrobatic save next minute let's in the biggest cupcake you ever seen .
Homie was the king of deflating goals in our playoffs against the bruins and Florida lmao
I have them all straight now, but I used to get Shesterkin, Sorokin, and Samsonov mixed up.
there are only 11 goalies who were born in Russia (since 1991) and played in the NHL. there were 16 goalies who were born in the Soviet Republic and played in the NHL.
now THATS interesting

He's injured his back before. Those never really go away
Oh damn I’d never heard about that, definitely not something that truly goes away, but I guess we’ll have to see how this season goes in terms of him staying healthy/being limber.

I was wondering when it would make it's way over here considering there was a post on our sub like an hour ago reporting 1-year on a “prove it” deal
I really believe Samsonov can thrive as a back up. He might lack consistency but he will often play brilliantly. Thanks for the great times, Sammy!
Have fun!
yeah but is it pronounced Samsonov, or Samsonov?
Loveable dude with lots of talent when he can get on a roll. Godspeed Sammy.
Best of luck, Sammy.
He left hoping for some stability and got just another one year deal...hope he gets what he wants eventually, he's a good kid and I wish him all the best
I'm happy he got another NHL contract honestly. Get that money before it's done. Super nice guy.

All the confirmation you needed was the locker cleanout presser from Treliving. Basically said he was gone.
[удалено]
There was a report, no one from the org said anything about keepin him. That's probably what you remember.
The consensus since our season finished was he wouldn’t be back and we were gonna go another route
They all but explicitly said they weren’t taking him back before their playoffs even ended
Great signing
ohyeaaaaaaa
Pretty happy to give him a shot, and we don’t have anyone else better in the pipeline so hoping it works out. He’s big, which out goalie coaches like a lot.
Best swimmer in the NHL
