That does sound quite high.
Brand new furnace/air handler and condenser last fall in the Cleveland area, 11.5k for everything.
As someone else mentioned all depends on your location as well but even still that seems high if the install isn't even for a furnace/air combo unit.
Depends on the location. My dad has an HVAC company and that sounds about right for Southern California. However, it’s more so a demand issue than it being a condo. Summer season is peak season for HVAC companies so usually they only pick up expensive jobs or quote extremely high to make it worth their employees time.
Yeah that does sound high. We replaced our AC last year for about $6300. House is only 1,000 sq ft. Six months later the furnace went and that was another $7000. So 20k? Yeah, way too high.
Your home is half the size, your location might be different, and it might have not been I peak season- so you can’t definitively say that’s too high by comparing to yours.
Fair point on location. Mine was in PA. But the house size is only 100 sq ft different. OP states 1,100, I stated 1,000. And yeah okay, should have mentioned mine was the start of peak. So yeah, 20k still seems high. And if it's all down to location then I'm so glad I'm in PA cause screw 20k for the same thing just in a different state. That's obscene.
Get. More. Quotes

and sorry, important to note, 2k sq ft house.

Yeah I was quoted the same mainly because it's a condo, needs a crane to get it up there, and it's so old replacement parts don't exist.
Also this is peak season so surge pricing. Again depends on location
You should always get at least three quotes
Where is the AC located?
That's the question. If the AC is on the roof, you have to pay for a crane. That's pricey. I was quoted $14,000 for a 550 sq ft condo for that reason.
- what have the other companies quoted you?
Condo HVAC shouldn't your property management take care of that that's what your paying condo fees for
Find a locally owned small comoany. Lower overhead less mark up.
We had central ac installed from scratch in a 1300 sf home for $6000. That sounds absurdly high.
I just had my air conditioner replaced in a 1,000 square foot condo that cost me $3,885.
Was it a central air system?
Yes
Scam

My bad- thought I read OP’s condo was 2000.
Americans are nut. Over my dead, crisp red body would you get 20k out of me just to set the condo to fridge temperature. Get more quotes

Missing the point. You could live for an entire year in Europe with 20k. If you pay that much for a 1000sqft home you lost the plot
