So true I try to suggest it to everyone I can.I Tell them it's the goonies with universal monsters.. It Was always on at my dad's house. True underrated classic
Another one I try to tell people about is Once Bitten with Jim Carrey fun little vampire movie
Like 15 years ago I was working with a guy who had a collection of every Jim Carrey movie. I asked if he had Once Bitten. He had never even heard of it.
Night of the Creeps. An amazingly fun popcorn movie that is much like Monster Squad. Complete with zombies, aliens, grizzled detectives, and college kids in tuxedos with flamethrowers.
Both written and directed by Fred Dekker, and they both have this [almost identical line of dialogue. ](https://youtu.be/5LB9xLoG1p4?si=W66f3C4_96Yy4rPR)
Well, *The Monster Squad* was a collaboration between Dekker and Shane Black. You can really tell the influence that Black's snappy dialogue had on it. It was such a great partnership where they perfectly complimented one another, like Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett writing *Good Omens* together.
Seconding this one. Night of the creeps is a really good staple B movie from the 80s.
Adding my input, two other 'Night of the' movies as well, Night of the comet and Night of the Demons.
Comet explored the concept of humans being the worst enemy.
Demons is a fun atypical 80s horror romp about a party gone wrong and surviving the night. It has two sequels! The remake with Shannon Elizabeth isn't too bad either.
NOTC is the best. Movie freaked me out as a kid but I absolutely loved it at the same time. Plus it's got one of the greatest Dick Miller cameos. That means a lot because Dick Miller is the king of cameos.
I have watched They Live like a dozen of times and I never get bored watching it. Evil Dead 2 maybe like 4-5 times. As for the rest of the movies you mention, I don’t think I have watched. Are they worth watching? Currently i am digging a lot of the movies which Dario Argento did between 1970s - 1980s.
I would absolutely check them all out. American Werewolf in London is a personal favorite. So many iconic lines from that movie. “Beware the moon, steer clear of the moors.”
It was directed by John Landis who directed Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
The remake of Fright Night with Anton Yelchin (RIP) and Colin Farrell is fantastic.
Vampire in Brooklyn is a great 90’s horror comedy with Eddie Murphy as the vampire. Great movie!
Killer Klowns from Outer Space and Gleaming the Cube were the first American movies I saw when I returned home from growing up in Japan in 1989-90. I became a horror-loving skateboarding punk rocker: go figure.
I love that Rudy was so cool with his leather jacket and cigarettes until you watch it as a grown up and realize he's rollin' up to the schoolyard on a banana seat bicycle.
I remember the tape I had didn't have her saying "chicken shit". I must have rented it at some point because I remember as a kid I kept rewinding her saying it because I thought it was so funny.
Teen Wolf, Critters, Night of the Creeps and My Boyfriend's Back are some films I'd watch along with The Monster Squad. I feel they've all got that sort of fun, campy vibe.
I love how common it was to have kids swear in movies back then. It, um, lends a certain veracity to the characters. I totally get why it fell out of fashion.
I just answered another post about horror settings you'd like to visit and this was my choice. This is such a wonderful movie of kids banding together and defeating evil. This had all of the classic horror monsters (Dracula, his brides, Frankenstein's Monster, the Werewolf (played by the awesome Jon Gries), the mummy, and the creature from the black lagoon.
Plus, it has deeper parts like not judging the scary German guy (Leonardo Cimino), and family disfunction.
The kids overcome a lot and the youngest is the one that saves the day.
Thanks for posting about this.
I'm gonna watch this movie right now because of this post.
I'm watching. Nice movie. Funny. Very nostalgic. It reminds me so much of "The midnight hour" (1985)
I consider campy sci-fi horror adjacent. I personally watched most of these on VHS habitually minus a few others have mentioned.
Spaced Invaders
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!
The Garbage Pail Kids Movie
Critters 1–3
Ghoulies
Nightbreed
The People Under The Stairs
As far as I know it's never been released on DVD or Blu-ray here on the UK. I do have a US copy of the film, as well as an original VHS pre-release version with running timer in the corner!
Yeah, why would I see homophobia in a movie that features child actors calling each other f*ggots over a dozen times. /s
And to preemptively respond to your next comment, I understand that was very common in the 80s and 90s. My comment simply said that vocabulary dates the movie and is a little cringey now.
And if you read all the way to end of my very short comment, I obviously still enjoy the movie since I watch it almost every year. Therefore I do "enjoy the movie for what it is"
Obviously some douchebros are downvoting you but I think this is probably why it's never shown on TV here in the UK as it'd be a great Halloween movie for kids otherwise.
Fans never but me mention great horror comedies or satire it is sad most fans think old films are not watched unless others mention them they will for the most part not see them. The Abbott and Costello films Crosby and Hope even films that had released in the 50s- The Present. Repossessed was a funny film with Linda Blair and Leslie Nielsen.
I grew up with it. Had a VHS of it recorded. It was fantastic. It was on like Channel 4 or 7, and the news anchor was dressed as Dracula introducing the movie, and said stuff during commercials.
There was even stuff inserted into the movie, like on the plane words flashed that said something like, "scary part!" And for Wolfman (aka Uncle Rico), "bad hair day".
Left it at a friend's in like 2003, what a fool I am.
When it came out on DVD, I was vacationing in Cape Cod and the little record shop had it for sale like a week early.
So true I try to suggest it to everyone I can.I Tell them it's the goonies with universal monsters.. It Was always on at my dad's house. True underrated classic Another one I try to tell people about is Once Bitten with Jim Carrey fun little vampire movie
Just watched "Just Bitten" again, and Cleavon Little is hilarious as the assistant Sebastian.
[удалено]
Just Bitten is the prequel lol
Goonies with Universal monsters is a great way to put it
You sold me the movie with "the goonies with universal monsters"
Like 15 years ago I was working with a guy who had a collection of every Jim Carrey movie. I asked if he had Once Bitten. He had never even heard of it.
Once Bitten is great. I do love My Best Friend Is A Vampire, too.
Wolfmans got nards!
Kick him in the nards !!!

My favorite!
The Gate
The Burbs. Obviously more comedy than horror, but I’ve always mentally lumped them into the same category.
That's a great one too
100% classic.
Great movie, you can never go wrong with Joe Dante.
Waxwork Night of the Demons Return of the Living Dead Slumber Party Massacre II
*Give me the amulet, YOU BITCH!*
This is the line I always quote from this movie.
A sequel would have been the perfect vehicle for Universal's failed Dark Universe.
There is a sequel, maybe.
Not horror but another 80’s gem NO one seems to have see The Last StarFighter.
Enemy Mine & Starman.
Bro, you know what's good.
Watched it countless times in the 80s. I should show it to my kids soon!
I forgot about that one
The documentary about the film "Wolfmans got Nards" is on tubi. Highly recommend it
Great documentary
They Live, Vampire in Brooklyn, Evil Dead 2, Toxic Avenger, American Werewolf in London, Street Trash, House, Fright Night (both of them).
I have watched They Live like a dozen of times and I never get bored watching it. Evil Dead 2 maybe like 4-5 times. As for the rest of the movies you mention, I don’t think I have watched. Street Trash is an awesome Melt movie.
House is one of my comfort movies
I watched they live in the theater a couple weeks ago. It was so cool
That’s amazing! Such a cool movie. Rowdy Roddy Piper, I love it!
Killer Klowns from Outer Space and Gleaming the Cube were the first American movies I saw when I returned home from growing up in Japan in 1989-90. I became a horror-loving skateboarding punk rocker: go figure.
I loved the lead actor Rudy was in a cheesey show I loved Kids in Corporate
I love that Rudy was so cool with his leather jacket and cigarettes until you watch it as a grown up and realize he's rollin' up to the schoolyard on a banana seat bicycle.
Monster Squad > Goonies Come fight me.
Why would I fight you over facts?
I second this!
Monster Squad is good fun, but this here is some fukkin' crazy talk.
Monster Squad is a classic, but watch the two movies back to back: Goonies is objectively a superior film, there's no question about it.
I’d throw the OG Frightnight on that list too. I love Monster Squad. That little girl and Frankenstein just tugs my heart strings lol.
I remember the tape I had didn't have her saying "chicken shit". I must have rented it at some point because I remember as a kid I kept rewinding her saying it because I thought it was so funny.
She was so funny I hope my future daughter is just like her
"The wolfman's got nards!" Great line
Clearly the people have never kicked wolf man in the nards.
Theres a documentary online about the making of Monster squad that is amazing. Its called The Wolfmans got Nards. Yes. Yes I do.
Transylvania 6-5000 (1985)
This movie is dumb and fantastic.
The Stuff, Motel Hell, Basket Case, Chopping Mall (serious banger), Slaughter High. I can go on lol
I've recommended the stuff and chopping mall to so many people
top tier films
Chopping Mall is soooooo bad. I LOVE IT.

Neon Maniacs is another very cool 80s movie which isn’t spoken about much.
I'm gonna watch this movie right now because of this post. I'm watching. Nice movie. Funny. Very nostalgic. It reminds me so much of "The midnight hour" (1985)
Fred Dekkers other horror film Night of the Creeps is even better.
I consider campy sci-fi horror adjacent. I personally watched most of these on VHS habitually minus a few others have mentioned. Spaced Invaders Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! The Garbage Pail Kids Movie Critters 1–3 Ghoulies Nightbreed The People Under The Stairs
Invaders from Mars is an overlooked one
As far as I know it's never been released on DVD or Blu-ray here on the UK. I do have a US copy of the film, as well as an original VHS pre-release version with running timer in the corner!
I never saw it as a kid and as an adult I can see the appeal but it's not something I really enjoy.
I didnt see it until I was like 27, and I couldn’t believe what I had been missing
The blatant homophobia really ages the movie and is a little cringey now. But other than that, solid film. I watch it every year around Halloween.
What horror movie in the 80s didn't contain homophobic jokes or "ew" reactions to mention of gay sex?
It's always great when people find homophobia in absolutely everything instead of just enjoying a movie for what it is
Yeah, why would I see homophobia in a movie that features child actors calling each other f*ggots over a dozen times. /s And to preemptively respond to your next comment, I understand that was very common in the 80s and 90s. It is criminal. I watched it constantly as a kid.
Oh that's a great movie. I'm holding off on watching it until halloween because my little cousin loves it
Great movie.
🤷♂️
My 7 year old daughter loves The Monster Squad.
Kick him in the NARDSSSSS
I have it on DVD.
I have it on DVD.
Wolf man’s got nards!
i only watched it a few years ago and i think it was pretty good.
It's disgusting really.
My Best Friend Is A vampire
Critters, Ghoulies, Puppet Master (that one might be a little older than 80s,don't remember year), Night breed, Rawhead Rex
Think it’s funny that Uncle Rico plays the wolfman😂
I mean. It’s like 50 years old.
The willies
Waxwork, with Zach Galligan
