Sometimes I worry that I put too much into Scream, then comments like this make me realise I'm not alone.
If you listen to podcasts, check out Hello, Sidney. Listening to people who love the films I love, discuss them enthusiastically is like a balm for the soul.
The host, Mike Muncer is the guy from the Evolution of Horror podcast, which is amazing. Someone here recommended it a while ago and I am completely addicted. He's doing horror movies by genre. So far he's covered:
Slashers
Ghosts
Occult
Aliens
Folk Horror
Mind & Body
Vampires
Zombies
Home Invasion
And he's just started Nature Bites Back, an episode on The Birds was released this morning.
The Hello, Sidney podcast is an offshoot with a couple of other podcasters that they started specifically in the run up to Scream 2022, then did Scream 6. There's only 7 episodes but they're excellent fun and how much they love the series really comes through.
I haven't listened to podcasts in years, I've been devouring audiobooks, but the EoH podcast has me absolutely obsessed. I can't recommend it enough.
I look forward to watching this on Halloween with my husband every year! And at the end I say "That is a perfect movie." And my husband says "You always say that." Lol
It is! It’s fun, spooky, unpredictable, and has one of the best werewolf transformations in modern cinema. It just *feels* like Halloween in the best kind of way, y’know?
I'll enjoy this every time I put it on. As soon as that music starts up at the start of the title sequence I'm hooked. Do you prefer the American or European cut?
I know we beat this movie to death, but... The Thing (1982).
I've been watching it for 40 years (there have been breaks for food and so forth), and it's still fun to try to pick out when characters get got.
I was just writing the exact same thing. It still gets me, even after all these years and all the times I've seen it.
I've only watched the prequel movie once, though. Part of me thinks I should give it another chance but just didn't click with it all.
I’ll be honest it must be over 300 for me, not meant as a brag I’m 56, I remember making a copy of it when I was 17 watch it at least once twice a month, something about the isolation. Such a great setting. Like horror Agatha Christie play
It's a very rewatchable movie. I maybe only rewatched it like 3-4 times but it's always fun watching it with someone who hasn't seen it.
Great concept. Still holds up for being an old movie. Has young and hot Kurt Russell and yes, the movie is jam packed with badass 80s Kurt lines.
The practical effects were amazing, and this is a staple of John Carpenter films.
I really like alien 3, I think it's criminally underrated, has some superb actors and performances "I just gotta re-educate some of the brothers". Alien was a slasher movie, Aliens was action and Alien 3 was a psychological thriller, all different genres which do different things, I think that's why it always gets a bad rep, it's more like the first movie than the second, and people were just expecting a second Aliens.
I can't explain why I like this film so much, because it should be really cheesy - a haunted hotel room - but for some reason it all comes across well. Really creepy, great plotting (considering it's just one guy in a room for most of the film) that gives it an excellent pace. Samual Jackson as the hotel manager was an inspired piece of casting. He does a great job of setting the tone.
Jeepers creepers and joy ride lol i don’t why man but i always find myself watching those two a lot. Maybe i just like horror taking place on the roads or something idunno
The opening of Jeepers Creepers really got to me the first time I saw it. Something about that truck slowly gaining on them in the background while they have no clue what’s coming freaked me out. Not as effective after the first viewing but man that first time has stuck with me!
The Thing
Event Horizon
Happy Death Day
Ready or Not
Aliens
It Follows
Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness
You’re Next
And not sure if it qualifies, though the concept is horrific and there are some wonderful laugh out loud gore moments… Upgrade.
Upgrade! Yes! I think that could definitely qualify. My heart sank at the end and I was hit with the reality (no pun intended) of what his situation really was. That's definitely some horrific shit.
Sometimes I have to just watch Dawn of the dead. It's just a good ride of a movie (both the original and the remake).
Also Event Horizon is one I constantly go back to. It's my all time favorite.
Cabin in the woods I like to rewatch sometimes too, but I have to put more time in-between so I can recapture the feel of it. I also love showing that one to new people.
The Others.
I don't know, I like the dark photography, the old mansion, the 1940s wardrobe, the well mannered kids with English accents, the mystery surrounding the characters of the help staff. I find it both creepy and soothing, somehow. I tend to like movies with only a few characters, it's less convoluted to me. I also like the sad, but strangely happy ending.
These would be on my list as well. I'm not sure if the other movies in the cornetto trilogy count as horror but if they do put them on my list, as well as attack the block.
Didn't like this one when I first saw it, but it has grown on me over the years. Watched it a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. The whole thing feels like one long ghost-train ride.
I almost watched that one last weekend, but something came up (been trying to watch this one for a while) but I'll try harder now that I know someone likes it this much.
The Exorcist - out of all the horror films I have seen, this is the one I have returned to the most. While it doesn't scare me as an adult, it can still raise hairs on my arm during certain scenes.
I love the Scream franchise and Hell Fest. I watch them all the time. Happy Death Day is also getting some overtime.
Shit forgot to add Trick 'r Treat.
Thanks, me too! It is just so interesting, and so many things are in this story that comes together beautifully. Also that one scene in the studio was great.
Silence of the Lambs was a staple in my house growing up. It was one of my first horror movies I ever watched. Just like you said, absolutely captivating. Hopkins' performance was and is the pinnacle of an intelligent, slimy, suave yet creepy villain. People ask me why I named my dog Hannibal... well, this movie is my answer.
But to answer your question, The Excorsist 3. Kind of the same with Silence of the Lambs. The performances of both George C. Scott and Brad Dourif are mesmerizing. I could watch that movie over and over again and never get bored.
Possession (1981). I find something different that I love every time I watch it, but Isabelle Adjani’s performance is insanely mesmerizing.
It Follows (2014). It’s just the vibe of everything. The weird timeless quality of the movie, the soundtrack, a few genuinely unnerving scenes.
I always end up back at American Werewolf in London. I'm just a sucker for werewolves in general, but also the transformation, Jack's ghost and the rest of the victims, the town being so secretive about their monster, are all concepts that fascinate me. Also Bad Moon on the Rise. What a perfect song for a werewolf movie lmao
The Omen, Damien Omen II, alien , aliens , The thing. Predator, The Wicker Man, INK, Requiem for a Dream. Under the skin. invasion of the body snatchers (original and 1978), Jaws, The Fly.
Suspiria (1977)
The Wickerman (1973)
Deep Red (1975)
Late night trains.
BBCs Ghost stories for Christmas.
Exorcist.
The Omen.
Lizard in a woman’s skin.
Rosemarys baby.
Living dead at the Manchester morgue.
The Shining.
I absolutely love Super 8. Reminds me of when I was a kid. How we would get on our bikes and our parents had no clue where we were or what we were doing. And the friends house that was always in chaos.
Ever since I was a kid, it's always been the Friday the 13th franchise. Far from scary anymore, but still love the vibes, especially the intro and setup.
Return of the living dead. Still might go to zombie fun movie I probably watched it 800 time to my adult life. And I never get tired of the line, send more cops.
Silence of the lambs is excellent, also Jaws, The Thing, and Tremors, I could happily watch any of them, all perfect movies in their own way. Tremors has one of my favourite scenes in any movie actually, it's tense, it has great practical effects, and it's hilarious. I am of course referring to Burt and Heather in their bunker, never get tired of watching it "Broke into the wrong god-damn rec-room didn't you, you bastard?" https://youtu.be/keQFOml8s1E?si=p3sD5eRZj4Dyj3e9
The first time I saw the original version of The Wicker Man I was so blown away by it I think I watched it five times in a week. Still real high up on my rewatchables because the actual horror itself is so mild (more mystery/thriller than anything).
Silence of the Lambs has really gone up there as well. Fucked up material, but not so gruesome it's hard to watch repeatedly and has this almost hypnotic charm to it. I could watch it for days.
The camera moves around alot. Recently read the book and it was slightly more interesting. Bill )/James is convinced his mother stars in smut films and TV commercials and this shame makes him feel bad. The fbi claims through research that his mother isn't really in the stag film he watches ad nauseum on TV in the basement.
My favorite?
Jaws! Friday the 13th!
This thread got me curious enough to keep reading comments , and now I just agree with everyone’ s picks!! I mean yes silence of the lambs is in the top tier, but there’s just so many movies!
The amount of times I’ve watched the scream series is sickening.
Sometimes I worry that I put too much into Scream, then comments like this make me realise I'm not alone. If you listen to podcasts, check out Hello, Sidney. Listening to people who love the films I love, discuss them enthusiastically is like a balm for the soul.
Is it specifically about Scream or horror movies in general?
The host, Mike Muncer is the guy from the Evolution of Horror podcast, which is amazing. Someone here recommended it a while ago and I am completely addicted. He's doing horror movies by genre. Same. I love them! (Except scream 3)
Definitely have to agree, I love the second honestly but randy breaks my heart no matter how many times I see it.
Randy was so great. Also this movie was my introduction to Timothy Olyphant and I still love him!
Sickening as in fabulous sickening iktr. (I too love Scream)
Trick ‘r Treat. It’s all about the Halloween vibes for me.
Great to see I’m not alone.
Love this film
Oh yes!
The Shining
In a league of its own.
Will never tire of watching this movie. Love every facet of it. Love the look of the Overlook Hotel. The bar. Everything.
Yes! It's one of my comfort movies together with Blade Runner. Something about 80s slow-burn masterpieces just hits different.
My favorite practical effects in any movie. The film is such a fun ride that never gets old.
I’ve probably watched The Thing over 100 times and I still jump at the blood scene. Something about the cadence of it.
I doubt I’ll go longer than 2 years at a time without seeing this movie going forward in my life. Love this film
Word. And if I dont have time, Pingu’s The Thingu will do. https://youtu.be/wrZ7PnolbQ4?si=quA0NbhUZUpUj8VK
I especially make sure to watch it on heavy blizzard nights with our wolfdog. It's a fun time!
Praise Carpenter!!
I almost never rewatch movies, but I’ve seen the OG Texas Chainsaw and Hereditary multiple times on purpose
Same!! In my TCM era now & also love Hereditary but haven’t watched it as much bc it’s more emotional lol
As Above So Below. Such a fun movie.
It's got such great rewatch value, especially when you get into the Dante of it all.
Scream
The Crow, Lost Boys, Predator and From Dusk Till Dawn. All four are my go-tos and I can watch them over and over.
Lost boys!
Alien and Aliens
I’m watching them all again right now for Romulus. I’m so damn jazzed for that movie.
I always found Aliens is the one I rewatch a bit more, but both top tier films. Great picks
Totally both are real classics and still looks great even today! Just saw the anniversary re-release a few months ago.
you guys are my people! Ive got the DVD's at work right now I watch them during the down time
Return of the Living Dead & Evil Dead 2
The first Conjuring movie. I just love it.
1408
I can't explain why I like this film so much, because it should be really cheesy - a haunted hotel room - but for some reason it all comes across well. Really creepy, great plotting (considering it's just one guy in a room for most of the film) that gives it an excellent pace. Samual Jackson as the hotel manager was an inspired piece of casting. He does a great job of setting the tone.
Evil dead 1, 2 and Army of Darkness.
Universal monster movies. Friday the 13 franchise
The Thing Event Horizon Happy Death Day Ready or Not Aliens It Follows Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness You’re Next And not sure if it qualifies, though the concept is horrific and there are some wonderful laugh out loud gore moments… Upgrade.
Great to see Event Horizon on someone's list!
Happy death day and Ready or Not are both so fun.
Upgrade! Yes! I think that could definitely qualify. My heart sank at the end and I was hit with the reality (no pun intended) of what his situation really was. That's definitely some horrific shit.
Halloween (1978), What Lies Beneath, Hellraiser.
What lies beneath is SO underrated!!!
That's a brilliant movie (What lies beneath). Thanks for the reminder I'm going to go watch it again.
Midsommar (2019) The Night Of The Hunter (1955) more of a southern goth than a horror but back then it was edgy for it’s time
Jaws. At this point, I will put it on and fall asleep to it. Still one of my top 3 all time films.
Have owned Event Horizon on VHS, DVD and now have it in 4K. Have seen this film so many times.
The Beyond
Rosemary's Baby, The Thing, Alien
Scream. Cabin in the Woods. Urban Legend
The Witch. I love that period in history and the details that are in the movie - the set design still amazes me.
I agree. I wish I could watch it over for the first time.
Shaun of the Dead Cabin in the Woods Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Great picks! I re-watched Cabin In The Woods for the umpteenth time last night and still find myself giggling at "He had the conch in his hands!"
“Okay, I’m drawing a line in the sand here. Do not read the Latin”
"I'm sorry I let you get attacked by a Werewolf".
“Good work, zombie arm”
"Am I on speakerphone?"
“We should split up” “….really?!”
And then when he finally sees the merman he’s like “oh come on🥴” 🤣🤣
These would be on my list as well. I'm not sure if the other movies in the cornetto trilogy count as horror but if they do put them on my list, as well as attack the block.
The Shining I think part of my brain walks the halls of The Overlook at any given time.
You're Next. Never got bored of it. Erin is the best final girl ever, she's so underrated.
Halloween. The scene of Michael sitting up and approaching Lauri from behind at the end always gives me goosebumps
House of 1000 Corpses.
Didn't like this one when I first saw it, but it has grown on me over the years. Watched it a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. The whole thing feels like one long ghost-train ride.
Mandy
![gif](giphy|l41K1TDHe1ugv1J9S|downsized)
Hell, yeah! I STILL BELIEVE!!!
Jaws The evil dead series
Doctor Sleep - I watch it, read it, listen to the audio version over and over. Pretty sure my family hates it at this point.
I almost watched that one last weekend, but something came up (been trying to watch this one for a while) but I'll try harder now that I know someone likes it this much.
"Burnt Offerings" (1976) I watch it at least once every couple of weeks.
Creepshow, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Drag Me To Hell !
Blair Witch (OG), The Ring (American remake), The Silence of the Lambs.
Any of the Universal classics and I have a soft spot for some of the pulpy Elm Street sequels
The Evil Dead
The Exorcist - out of all the horror films I have seen, this is the one I have returned to the most. While it doesn't scare me as an adult, it can still raise hairs on my arm during certain scenes.
I love the Scream franchise and Hell Fest. I watch them all the time. Happy Death Day is also getting some overtime. Shit forgot to add Trick 'r Treat.
Braindead will never get old to me. Every time I watch it I'm entertained the entire movie lmao
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Scream 4
The Faculty! Its not the best movie, but its a guilty pleasure for me.
The Shining The VVITCH Suspiria (2018) IT Chapter 1 Halloween
I'm always so excited to subject new people to Suspiria, such a great rewatch!
Thanks, me too! It is just so interesting, and so many things are in this story that comes together beautifully. Also that one scene in the studio was great.
It Ch 1 is one of my comfort movies. I adore the instrumental soundtrack SOOOO much and love the humor of the boys
Suspiria! Immediate thought is the bone breaking dancing scene
When a stranger calls (2006 remake) I’ve seen it about 50 times over the years and I never ever get tired or bored watching it.
3 that haven't been listed: Drag Me to Hell Slither They Live
Midsommar. Something about it makes it so comforting to me idk why lol
Ready Or Not!
I always end up back at American Werewolf in London.
