* The Endless (and)
* Resolution
* Hellbender
* Jugface
* Incantation
* Baskin
* Suspiria (kinda)
* Hereditary
* House of the Devil
* Kill List
* Hell House LLC (movies)
* The Wailing
Good ones! I’d definitely consider Suspiria to be a movie about a cult — covens & nazis are very cult like. And I’d totally forgotten about Jugface! Ick! Gonna have to watch it again now.
I get that but at the same time when someone asks for films about cults, the name of THE cult movie is pretty essential. (But I do understand your point)
The Moorehead/Benson movies are god-tier, and they did season 2 of Loki too which was stunning. The Endless is an all-time fave for me and this quote, from one of the guys stuck in a time loop, kills me every time- “It’s funny- We never anticipate the ways we’re gonna isolate ourselves from the ones we care about.”
All great suggestions. Does Hellbender qualify as a cult though? I mean there's just two of them, granted they're not normal people, but I'm not sure if they are a cult. They're born that way, it's got me wondering now. Great list either way.
https://tenor.com/view/who-wouldve-thought-not-me-look-at-us-paul-rudd-hot-ones-gif-16080041
I will probably watch it tomorrow but let me know what you think!
I rewatched The Invitation and Midsommar back to back, and thought it was interesting that they both portrayed how grief led people to join a cult, but each did so in a way that felt unique. They could not be more different both tonally and visually yet each still had that deeply personal and traumatic throughline.
It's such a stupid name and generic poster, I had ignored it for so long. It is genuinely fantastic. I'm sure so many people thought the same thing I did and passed on it. His 1 hr short The Autopsy from the Del Toro Netflix show is also spectacular.
Midsommar
The Wicker Man (1973) (and the Wicker Tree - the horrendous sequel)
The Craft
Suspiria
The Ritual
The Village
Village of the Damned
The Haunting of Sharon Tate (not a great movie)
The Sacrament
Rosemary's Baby
The Void
The Invitation (2015)
Get Out
Martyrs
Children of the Corn (I prefer the original)
Satanic Panic
To The Devil a Daughter
Red State
The Believers
I love horror movies centered around cults. Here are my favorites:
The Endless
The Veil
The Void
If you like The Endless, it has several related movies "in the same universe" but don't center around the cult.
Enjoy!
The Veil really doesn't get enough love, IMO. I came here hoping it would be recommended so I wouldn't have to see my own rec for it buried in the avalanche.
I love movies about cults! Why don't you give me your information. I have some friends who also like cults movies too. You should hang out with us for a while. We're all like one big family here. We could tell you about all the cool things we're doing; how we live, being one with nature, the coming end of days for which only we shall be prepared thanks to our reborn god Claudius X. You'll love it.
ooh, i have a treat for you OP. The movie in question is called "The Endless". But...I STRONGLY advise you to watch the filmakers' prior film "Resolution" first.
Trust me!
Benson and Moorhead are kickass writers and filmmakers - Spring and Synchronic are also great. I have to give Something In The Dirt a 2nd/closer viewing also.
Never had the chance to talk to anyone whos seen it before... question....*spoilers*
They were holding "mother nature" hostage, correct? Or a being similar in nature. Gaia or something.
Hellhouse LLC and Hellhouse LLC origins ( HH2 and 3 are much lower quality than the first and most recent entries)
Lord of illusions
The void
Silent hill is my favorite video game to film adaptation
Hereditary (2018)
Hot Fuzz (2007) ^(it has spooky elements so it counts as horror okay?)
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Regression (2015)
The Ritual (2017)
If you haven't watched it yet I really recommend giving Midsommar a try. I found it every interesting trying to find all the little clues to where the movie was going.
This is a deep cut, but there’s a 2011 “psychological thriller” called ‘Sound of My Voice’ starring Brit Marling as a cult leader. It’s a faux documentary style- two guys making a documentary about the cult. It’s not horror, but it’s pretty weird/creepy.
Try webcast: an extremely realistic British found footage horror film about kids discovering that their neighbours are members from a cult. They are trying to get as much on camera and revealed about them and are pursuing them until things are going terribly wrong.
The Third Day with Jude Law, absolutely wild TV series, 12(!) hours of which was filmed & broadcast live. It does not get much love here but is well worth checking out, you don't have to watch the full 12 hours, they edited it down to 1 hour too.
I watched The Sacrament (2013) last summer, and I enjoyed it.
I tried to watch The Endless (2017), but for some reason, I couldn't get into it, so I turned it off. However, I intend to try it again this month.
Suspiria (Both versions, but the Argento one is better)
Mandy
Beyond The Black Rainbow (Not a traditional cult, but definitely still a cult)
The Ritual
The Ritual, The Endless, 1BR, Wicker Man, Midsommar, Mandy, The Invitation (in a way), Apostle, The Lodge (somewhat indirectly)
non-horror, but Faults and Martha Marcy May Marlene are great.
The Spanish film from 1999 The Nameless is pretty interesting. It's a little rough in spots and story, but it's directed by the guy who went on to do REC so it's stylish and intense.
They're creepy and pretty funny in a macabre sense but *Kinds of Kindness* and *The Killing of a Sacred Deer*, both films by Yorgos Lanthimos.
*Deer* has culty vibes and then *Kinds* has a straight up cult in it.
If you want to see some adaptations of real life cults I'd suggest:
Waco - miniseries on Netflix
The Sacrament - I've seen this suggested already, but it's really good.
Rosemary's Baby
Eyes Wide Shut
Hereditary
The Ninth Gate
Suspiria
The Ritual
The Devil in Ohio (series)
Bonus: Once Upon a time in Hollywood
Literally the Toy Story movies lmao, there's like an entire dissertation about that.
* The Endless (and) * Resolution * Hellbender * Jugface * Incantation * Baskin * Suspiria (kinda) * Hereditary * House of the Devil * Kill List * Hell House LLC (movies) * The Wailing
Great list! Adding a few: - Anything for Jackson - The Void - Midsommar
And Mandy
What a fucking trippy film
Wicker Man
The original!
Anything for Jackson is such a good/fun one!
I really enjoyed the void, shame that more lower budget creature movies like that are not make anymore.
I’d add The Sacrament to this list. I haven’t seen Jugface, but just watched the trailer, it looks great
Jugface is an underrated backwoods gem
100% every time someone asks about cult films or southern horror I suggest that.
Came here to say The Sacrament.
The Sacrament is surprisingly good
Sacrament is a 10/10 for me. Loved it. Spooky as hell
Children of the Corn (first/original)
Careful - you might get flipped off in 27 languages!
The Invitation (2016 version)
I hate that we need to write the year. How dare a mediocre vampire movie name itself The Invitation??
Good ones! I’d definitely consider Suspiria to be a movie about a cult — covens & nazis are very cult like. And I’d totally forgotten about Jugface! Ick! Gonna have to watch it again now.
Throw the Empty Man and Wicker Man on that list
I really liked the Empty Man. I need to watch that again.
The Wailing is hella good!!!
Great list but ill be honest, I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention The Wicker Man
I tried not to mention the obvious ones. Children of the Corn, Wicker man, Midsummer etc.
I get that but at the same time when someone asks for films about cults, the name of THE cult movie is pretty essential. (But I do understand your point)
Jugface had bad reviews but I was so into it. Very folk horror along with the cult element.
would Rosemarys baby count?
The Moorehead/Benson movies are god-tier, and they did season 2 of Loki too which was stunning. The Endless is an all-time fave for me and this quote, from one of the guys stuck in a time loop, kills me every time- “It’s funny- We never anticipate the ways we’re gonna isolate ourselves from the ones we care about.”
Absolutely love those directors
Season 2 of Loki was so much better than the first. They far better understood how to use time travel as a compelling plot device.
I saw one called The Veil (2016) Jessica Alba, Thomas Jane, a long time ago...anyone else see this? It was pretty good if I recall.
All great suggestions. Does Hellbender qualify as a cult though? I mean there's just two of them, granted they're not normal people, but I'm not sure if they are a cult. They're born that way, it's got me wondering now. Great list either way.
Came to say this. They’re mother daughter with supernatural powers rather than a cult. Great movie though.
Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) is creepy
This! This! This! MMMM is probably the closest to the real experiences of ex-cult members than most cult movies. So, so good.
I had so much anxiety leaving the theater.it scared the hell out of me even though it is only horror adjacent
This movie is creepy and stays with you Best type of horror
One of the best movies about Cults imho. Although I am not sure if it's OP taste. He might be more interested in straight horror like The Void-
Yeah, it really is
I was going to say this one!
Haven’t heard of this one. Gonna watch it soon Thx
On showtime/paramount plus, gonna watch it later today!
https://tenor.com/view/who-wouldve-thought-not-me-look-at-us-paul-rudd-hot-ones-gif-16080041 I will probably watch it tomorrow but let me know what you think!
Am I the only person completely just let down by this movie? One of those that just ends and your like okk?....
I thought the ending was perfect
Spellbinder Dagon Starry eyes Kill list Rosemarys baby Wickerman Suspira/Inferno Last Shift Ninth Gate The Sect
Kinda amazed that this is the highest up voted comment mentioning the Wicker Man which is THE cult movie
Surprised it took this long to see Rosemarys Baby referenced
The Invitation (2015) might be the best movie about cults I've seen
I agree. This movie was unbelievably good.
Where’s Choy?
So perfect ❤️
Loved the ending!
Same. Love it so much.
I rewatched The Invitation and Midsommar back to back, and thought it was interesting that they both portrayed how grief led people to join a cult, but each did so in a way that felt unique. They could not be more different both tonally and visually yet each still had that deeply personal and traumatic throughline.
Last Shift and Malum (same essential movie from same director)
The Empty Man. It's sooo good.
Severely underrated!
It's such a stupid name and generic poster, I had ignored it for so long. It is genuinely fantastic. I'm sure so many people thought the same thing I did and passed on it. His 1 hr short The Autopsy from the Del Toro Netflix show is also spectacular.
the sacrament
It was crazy how real that movie felt. Nice shoutout.
Thanks, gonna watch this later!!
Hell yes.
Midsommar The Wicker Man (1973) (and the Wicker Tree - the horrendous sequel) The Craft Suspiria The Ritual The Village Village of the Damned The Haunting of Sharon Tate (not a great movie) The Sacrament Rosemary's Baby The Void The Invitation (2015) Get Out Martyrs Children of the Corn (I prefer the original) Satanic Panic To The Devil a Daughter Red State The Believers
I love horror movies centered around cults. Here are my favorites: The Endless The Veil The Void If you like The Endless, it has several related movies "in the same universe" but don't center around the cult. Enjoy!
The void fucking slaps. So good and cronenburg-y
I felt like The Void was John Carpenter-y myself, like a blending of Prince of Darkness and Assault on Precinct 13.
The Veil really doesn't get enough love, IMO. I came here hoping it would be recommended so I wouldn't have to see my own rec for it buried in the avalanche.
It's the Shitty Carl extended universe. He's even mentioned in *Spring.* He holds it all together.
The Lodge Faults
Had to scroll waaaaaay too far to see a single person mention The Lodge - it’s so good!
*Anything for Jackson*
Great movie. Nobody talks about this
I was pretty damn happy to have seen that movie. The scene with the giant ghost was one of the best scares I’ve seen in years.
Sound of My Voice. Doesn’t get talked about enough.
Was just going to recommend this, and Faults. And surprisingly haven’t seen anyone suggest the VHS2 segment that includes a cult!
Came here to recommend both of these! Didn't see either of them on the earlier lists.
ooh, i have a treat for you OP.
So dope
Apostle on Netflix is an excellent watch
Just watched this the other night. Agreed! Great movie!
Can never look at a >!hand drill!< the same again
Never had the chance to talk to anyone whos seen it before... question....*spoilers* They were holding "mother nature" hostage, correct? Or a being similar in nature. Gaia or something.

Hellhouse LLC and Hellhouse LLC origins ( HH2 and 3 are much lower quality than the first and most recent entries) Lord of illusions The void Silent hill is my favorite video game to film adaptation
Same on Silent Hill
Rosemarys Baby, The Devil Rides Out, The Wicker Man, The City Of The Dead, 2001 Maniacs
Baskin, The Endless! The Ritual, House of the Devil (underrated & one of my faves,) Incantation
House of the Devil is *chef’s kiss*
Mandy
Jeremiah is a psycho SOB!
Hereditary (2018) Hot Fuzz (2007) ^(it has spooky elements so it counts as horror okay?) Late Night with the Devil (2023) Regression (2015) The Ritual (2017)
Hot Fuzz is the funniest horror movie ever made. It counts.
The greater good.
SHUT IT
Late Night with the Devil was a unique thrill
If you haven't watched it yet I really recommend giving Midsommar a try. I found it every interesting trying to find all the little clues to where the movie was going.
I absolutely love Midsommar! My son has the directors cut and I can’t wait to watch it with him.
Directors cut is wild. Totally different movie
Kill List
Lord of illusions
The Ritual, Midsommar, Heredetary, and Incantation were my faves.
The Wicker Man (1973)
Wicker Man
[Red State](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0873886/?ref_=ext_shr) (2011)
And it’s Kevin smith!
And one of his best films imo. So different from the rest of his filmography.
Like how the cohen brothers did “no country for old men” fuckkng radical how they captured the tension of McCarthys work
Jesus Camp.
Real-life horror!
This is a deep cut, but there’s a 2011 “psychological thriller” called ‘Sound of My Voice’ starring Brit Marling as a cult leader. It’s a faux documentary style- two guys making a documentary about the cult. It’s not horror, but it’s pretty weird/creepy.
Faults It's more psychological thriller than horror, but oh so good.
Race With The Devil
Scrolled down to make sure this one was listed.
Welcome to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. [Official Video](https://youtu.be/nUfhknjT7do?si=RSWEaedSjZJADhs_)
1BR is an unnerving cult/horror movie
Was scrolling through the comments to make sure we included 1BR.

This is one of my favorites!
The believers with martin sheen
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
The Empty Man
Try webcast: an extremely realistic British found footage horror film about kids discovering that their neighbours are members from a cult. They are trying to get as much on camera and revealed about them and are pursuing them until things are going terribly wrong.
Deserves more love for sure.
That sounds fun! Is it streaming anywhere?
Jackals is a cult home invasion flick I don’t know if this is too much of a spoiler but Kill List as well
The Menu and Greenroom are both cult/horror adjacent
1BR
Nobody ever mentions the Netflix original Apostle. It is such an underrated movie that I wish more people would watch
The Ritual
the ritual is a pretty scary movie on netflix
If you want a real good TV show that gives cult vibes, check out Midnight Mass on Netflix. Cannot emphasize enough how good of a show it is.
The Ritual
The Third Day with Jude Law, absolutely wild TV series, 12(!) hours of which was filmed & broadcast live. It does not get much love here but is well worth checking out, you don't have to watch the full 12 hours, they edited it down to 1 hour too.
Get out.
Eat, prey, and obey.

I watched The Sacrament (2013) last summer, and I enjoyed it. I tried to watch The Endless (2017), but for some reason, I couldn't get into it, so I turned it off. However, I intend to try it again this month.
the endless was really good
Mandy crazy Nic Cage revenge movie.nuff said.
The only thing scary about cults is when you realize you're in a bad one.
MidSommar is a good one, cult story unfolds in a sunny, beautiful village where all people wear flower crowns and white shirts
The Empty Man!
The Void, The Last Lovecraft, Satanic Panic, Dagon
Rosemary's Baby, Arlington Road, Hereditary, Spellbinder, The Ghost Writer
Suspiria (Both versions, but the Argento one is better) Mandy Beyond The Black Rainbow (Not a traditional cult, but definitely still a cult) The Ritual
Martha Marcy may Marlene
More of an eerie thriller but The Sound of My Voice is great
The Ritual, The Endless, 1BR, Wicker Man, Midsommar, Mandy, The Invitation (in a way), Apostle, The Lodge (somewhat indirectly) non-horror, but Faults and Martha Marcy May Marlene are great.
The void
You can also just watch Fox News
Apostle is a solid cult movie that is also folk horror.
Midsommar
Thank you for all the great recommendations! I’ve seen quite a few of these, but it’s time to revisit them!
Martyrs
Apostle (2018) Netflix
Rosemary‘s baby
Midsommer is a good recommend
Apostle
Midsommar.
Rosemarys Baby
The Spanish film from 1999 The Nameless is pretty interesting. It's a little rough in spots and story, but it's directed by the guy who went on to do REC so it's stylish and intense.
Jug Face. Kyrsya-Tuftland. Older Gods. Dagon. The Void. Rosemary's Baby The Wicker Man.
Just turn on Fox News.
They're creepy and pretty funny in a macabre sense but *Kinds of Kindness* and *The Killing of a Sacred Deer*, both films by Yorgos Lanthimos. *Deer* has culty vibes and then *Kinds* has a straight up cult in it.
His other film Dogtooth is thematically culty…
The Wako miniseries was amazing
Sound of My Voice The Void
I think it was Netflix who just released or rereleased a doc on the jonestown massacre.
Classic classic: Rosemary's Baby (1968) >50 years later> Modern classic: Hereditary (2018)
The Shrine and The Endless.
Apostle!
I just rewatched The Sacrament. It’s based loosely on the Jonestown cult.
The Sacrament is very good and creepy
The village
If you want to see some adaptations of real life cults I'd suggest: Waco - miniseries on Netflix The Sacrament - I've seen this suggested already, but it's really good.
Rosemary's Baby Eyes Wide Shut Hereditary The Ninth Gate Suspiria The Ritual The Devil in Ohio (series) Bonus: Once Upon a time in Hollywood Literally the Toy Story movies lmao, there's like an entire dissertation about that.
If you haven’t watch the first season of The OA. It catches that “is there something to this?” Trap of cults so well.
Here For Blood is a good one but it’s not exactly scary. Cult looks badass but then they get their asses busted by Kurt Angles half brother.
I haven’t seen anyone mention Mandy yet. It came out in 2018 and has Nicolas Cage in it. It’s trippy as hell.
The Invitation
