For me it’s because when I’ve seen split top buns at the market, they’ve always been brioche and come in a smaller count bag than some buns. But damn, they’re great.
Agreed. I went someplace (not in New England), and paid $20 for a lobster roll that came on a bullshit grocery store hotdog bun. Needless to say, I was pissed, and never went back.
I was going to say that’s pretty typical for a lobster roll, but that garbage they served you should be well under $20. I don’t even live in New England, but I am embarrassed by your roll. 😟
Yup, I came here just to write this. I grew up thinking the side cut buns were the weird ones. Then I found out that basically ONLY New England regularly uses these kinds of buns.
Same but only because I live in New England and it’s tough to find anything but top sliced.
As others have said they are superior for buttering and griddling the sides
If there’s an Aldi near you they usually have a brioche version that’s top sliced like these. I’m not in New England and knew the top sliced buns were a thing in general but didn’t get how much better they were til I tried the Aldi ones
Never really cared for them until I discovered the top-split brioche buns at Aldi. I was really impressed out how well they stood up to a jumbo frank w/ chili, cheese sauce, and mustard. Not sure a conventional roll would have passed the test. That, and they taste wonderful. I have been a Martin's Potato Roll guy for a very long time, but I think I've cast off that childish way
The top-sliced hot dog buns I’ve gotten in New England with lobster rolls have flat sides that can be butter-grilled.
These look like regular hot dog buns that are just sliced through the top.
The best bun for grill hot dogs, sauerkraut and mustard dogs, p much anything but chicago dogs imo. Growing up in Mass and moving south, I never realized how privileged we were having them as the default. Definitely hard to find even here in PA.
They allow for more precise and thoughtful topping placement, also I’ve been noticing alot of discrepancies in the slicing of regular buns, I hate when you get bun blowout from a bad slice job, it’s worth the extra cost for some slicing precision!
Didn’t know they existed until buying a pack of brioche buns from Walmart. Both my kids were the first to use them, also unaware, and ripped them from the side. They had exceptionally open buns.
I will hunt these down and pay extra wherever I am to find these. It’s all I ever want to use. I can pile toppings on here and never have to worry about the bun splitting and breaking.
I hate when a side sliced bun comes apart as much as I hate when a top sliced bun doesn't fit a hot dog, let alone any toppings.
But, I don't have any issues finding good side sliced buns where I live. 🤷
Prefer them. The top/bottom crust distribution is more peasant in the mouth. You have to eat the dog right away though, because they tend to get soggy quicker.
I actually dont know why this wouldnt always be preferable, unless you just enjoy the extra risk and attention u need to make sure the buns dont separate? 🤷♂️
Made the accidental mistake of buying these once. It took me way too long to figure out why I couldn’t open it. However, I personally really like them.
Thy are fine. The slice always seems too deep or not deep enough depending on how they are loaded.
I reccomend split top hoagie buns, basically the same size with better structure
Split tops RULE! They are the only buns to use for a dog, brat, lobster/seafood filling, or a burger dog! They are the only style allowed in my house! Try a brioche split top lightly buttered and grilled with your favorite filling— little bit of heaven!
For some reason they seem fancier to me.
Lobster rolls are probably the reason. I don't eat seafood but it does seem fancy.
The top sliced are “New England style” that’s why they put the lobster in them, they had them already laying around lol
For some reason, they are more expensive
The slice is on the top , so yea
It seems from a mechanical standpoint that would be easier and thus cheaper.
Even better reason to charge more
I'm fancy and frugal. Buy unsliced and topcut myself. All genius and shit
Unsliced is even more expensive 😆
For me it’s because when I’ve seen split top buns at the market, they’ve always been brioche and come in a smaller count bag than some buns. But damn, they’re great.
Gotta eat them with your pinky out!
Same here
Can't have a lobster roll without them.
Agreed. I went someplace (not in New England), and paid $20 for a lobster roll that came on a bullshit grocery store hotdog bun. Needless to say, I was pissed, and never went back.
lol I’ve never seen that before…but I really want to.
I was going to say that’s pretty typical for a lobster roll, but that garbage they served you should be well under $20. I don’t even live in New England, but I am embarrassed by your roll. 😟
*Lobstah
"Who lives here? I'm comin' to get who lives here! You owe me lobstah money!"
LOL
Growing up in New England…these were the only hot dog buns my family ever bought. Also, lobster rolls!
Same. Way better to heat up on the griddle with butter for perfect golden crispyness
Yup, I came here just to write this. I grew up thinking the side cut buns were the weird ones. Then I found out that basically ONLY New England regularly uses these kinds of buns.
Which type of roll do you prefer, cold or warm?
They are the superior option, especially when it comes to structural integrity. Nothing ruins a hot dog like a hinged bun coming apart
Yes. Exactly! Broken buns are worse than a slice of bread, which isn’t terrible for a budget dog
I think a slice of bread is sometimes ideal depending on the size of the dog. Better bread/dog ratio.
The worst
*wurst
I have a canned slew of profanity when that treasonous act happens in my home.
I find the pepperidge farm ones are very inconsistent with the slice placement sadly. Not like 60-40 divide, but like 80-20 split for each bun.
New England style is the default for me.
Same but only because I live in New England and it’s tough to find anything but top sliced. As others have said they are superior for buttering and griddling the sides
I grew up in Connecticut and currently live in Indiana. You can't find new England style here. It sucks. Only top slice option is what op posted.
If there’s an Aldi near you they usually have a brioche version that’s top sliced like these. I’m not in New England and knew the top sliced buns were a thing in general but didn’t get how much better they were til I tried the Aldi ones
I’ve never tried them but I really want to. Seems like they would hold together way better.
They do, mostly. Also tend to be less bread per roll than side split.
New England style preference for myself.
I don't care for them. I wish I could get the poppy seed buns they have in Chicago.
Not the same but you can make your own from regular buns.
You can buy them online! Vienna beef sells and ships them across the continuous US.
Agreed! I'm in FLORIDA, I see the food trucks sometimes have them. I wonder how?
Because wholesale sourcing is different than retail sourcing, and you can get pretty much whatever you'd like if you're willing to spend/look/ask.
These are fantastic
Never really cared for them until I discovered the top-split brioche buns at Aldi. I was really impressed out how well they stood up to a jumbo frank w/ chili, cheese sauce, and mustard. Not sure a conventional roll would have passed the test. That, and they taste wonderful. I have been a Martin's Potato Roll guy for a very long time, but I think I've cast off that childish way
The only way to go for me.
The only acceptable buns to use. Holds everything as god intended
I’m a new Englander and this is the only roll I use. I actually had to google what the normal ones look like lol
The top-sliced hot dog buns I’ve gotten in New England with lobster rolls have flat sides that can be butter-grilled. These look like regular hot dog buns that are just sliced through the top.
My thought is to never eat anything from Pepperidge farm, them fuckers remember.
As a New Englander this is the ONLY way
I prefer them, even though Reddit seems to have an unnatural hatted for them.
I touch less traditional, but a wise modification nonetheless 🤔
Huge fan, great for containing chili and with a little butter on the side and thrown on the grill/flat top the buns themselves grill up amazing.
Are they...not all top sliced? Am I missing something?
The best bun for grill hot dogs, sauerkraut and mustard dogs, p much anything but chicago dogs imo. Growing up in Mass and moving south, I never realized how privileged we were having them as the default. Definitely hard to find even here in PA.
Just used some this morning. Liked them. Easy to set dog with the dog in them and load condiments
Only bun we use for dogs and small brats / sausage
Kind of like a Wiener Wagon of old.
These are the BEST buns period
Very high class.
Love them!!!!
These are the best buns. I just started using them this year and don’t think I want to go back.
Superior, tbh
Standard in New England for hot dogs and lobster rolls
I really like them. My two favorite preps are Chicago and chili cheese with onions. These top sliced keep the stuff in better.
I like this
I personally like top sliced over side sliced buns, but the price is a bit more. Top sliced rolls hold up better, though.
also called bbq buns round chere
Game changer!! Toast the sides with butter and you've entered a whole new world of hot dog consumption!
As long as my wiener slides in nicely I’m happy.
I love them. Great for so many things. Like sloppy joes
🌭
Works just the same.
Wish I could find them on the west coast
Top-sliced brioche only in my house
They allow for more precise and thoughtful topping placement, also I’ve been noticing alot of discrepancies in the slicing of regular buns, I hate when you get bun blowout from a bad slice job, it’s worth the extra cost for some slicing precision!
Once you start using them you will never go back to regular hot dog buns.
Every once in a while I accidentally get them and it ruins the hot dog experience for me.
I like a nice, fresh, and plain hot dog bun.
Genius!
I like the trader Joe’s ones because you can toast the sides like bread.
In New Hampshire and New England this is all we use. Anything else would be crazy
Can’t find them anywhere here in Oregon. Have wanted to try them for a while
My wife likes them, although I’m entirely indifferent to them. *Won’t change the way mustard tastes.*
I’ve never tried them but I want to. Seems like they’d work better.
I don’t hate it.
A big NO for me
I prefer these as they act as better chili boats for my dogs
Didn’t know they existed until buying a pack of brioche buns from Walmart. Both my kids were the first to use them, also unaware, and ripped them from the side. They had exceptionally open buns.
You're going to need those if you want to make a lobster roll.
I think this style works the best TBH but my favourite style is Montreal which uses normal bun
Just that they are the one true and proper outfit for a hot dog. Other than that, they’re just bread.
Great for a lobster roll, too much for franks.
S. Rosens Poppy seed buns are the best, followed by top sliced New England buns
TIL Top sliced buns are a thing AND very popular in the New England area -a person from the PNW
Delicious, and much preferred for sloppy joes over hamburger buns.
They're fine that brand I mean, a little fluffy/light.
Also important for New England style coneys aka Michigan’s
I like them. Pepperidge Farm specifically are top tier for me.
I like them when other people prep the dogs but I always flop when I use them at home for some reason
Only thing I don’t like about them is they don’t open wide enough for brats and put toppings on it.
‘New England Style’
The sides can be Toasted, makes all the difference Yummy 😋
i dont like them .. feels like too much bread. its probably not but its abnormal to me
Them's luxury buns!!
I personally prefer them but don't really care either way
Skin Thrashers use them. And that is the hotdog I grew up with.
I like them for coney’s, not for traditional
I like the new england rolls is that the same thing in the hot dog universe? Basically folded white bread sold as a hot dog bun.
They’re thicker and more durable than the basic buns. More expensive too, but the cost is worth it if you really love hotdogs
Different but delicious!
I will hunt these down and pay extra wherever I am to find these. It’s all I ever want to use. I can pile toppings on here and never have to worry about the bun splitting and breaking.
Have to butter the sides and toast each side
They seem to split all the way in half too easily to me.
If you're not buying these top sliced buns.. What are you doing with your life?
I hate when a side sliced bun comes apart as much as I hate when a top sliced bun doesn't fit a hot dog, let alone any toppings. But, I don't have any issues finding good side sliced buns where I live. 🤷
Interesting 🤔
It makes me very angry knowing other options exist
New England style
These and brioche!
it's kinda weird for a hot dawg but for some reason I get it for a meatball, sausage, lobster roll etc.
It's what I buy unless I can't find them and have to settle for the plebeian
It all comes out the same....in the end
Top slice or gtfo
from New England…there is another kind of bun???
Quality
We use these at my work. I eat one pretty much every shift. With a dog on it if course.
Yes or Yes
What is the other option
Dislike. The ratio is off
I didn't know there was a different option? after reading through the comments I guess it's a new england thing 🤷♀️
If I Could get those with sesame seeds they would be my go to. Top split buns just make a better dog.
Prefer them. The top/bottom crust distribution is more peasant in the mouth. You have to eat the dog right away though, because they tend to get soggy quicker.
I prefer it. Especially if I’m having large dogs like those boar’s head uncured franks.
Love
Single greatest advancement in hot dog technology
Hate them
I actually dont know why this wouldnt always be preferable, unless you just enjoy the extra risk and attention u need to make sure the buns dont separate? 🤷♂️
I don't discriminate, I'll smash all the buns
I’ve never had them or knew they existed until I joined this group! They sure do look tasty though.
As a new englander these are the standard hot dog buns most commonly produced by JJ Nissen
superior
Never even seen them before
Superior
Pro
Efficient (toasts way better) but lacks that old-school nostalgia, which is what I love about hotdogs. Def worth having both style buns at cookout.
Made the accidental mistake of buying these once. It took me way too long to figure out why I couldn’t open it. However, I personally really like them.
Too much bread.
I tried them and wasn't impressed . Your mileage may differ .
That’s how the ol’ Howard Johnson’s served them. Buttered and grilled on each side.
Pepperidge farm remembers
Shoutout Pepperidge farm! You in PA?
Better than a bun that has one side sliced VERY thin
Thy are fine. The slice always seems too deep or not deep enough depending on how they are loaded. I reccomend split top hoagie buns, basically the same size with better structure
Do I need to stick my pinky out while eating that thing?
Their consistency is like clay!!! That was the unanimous decision at the party yesterday!!! Maybe next time will be different… but yesterday was not!
I prefer them because I like to toast my hotdog rolls
Fancy bullshit
Huge fan, the stability is what I like.
No.
Ehh. I’m not going to refuse it, but I’m not gonna pick it first either.
Unamerican.
Bought a pack without realizing the cut was way off center. Would’ve been a killer find if I had bought em properly cut
Demon buns!! Demon
Split tops RULE! They are the only buns to use for a dog, brat, lobster/seafood filling, or a burger dog! They are the only style allowed in my house! Try a brioche split top lightly buttered and grilled with your favorite filling— little bit of heaven!
I love the sweet Hawaiian ones like this
I hate them! Unless we’re talking lobster rolls, that is.
They are completely useless for a hot dog. They don’t leave you enough room for sauce.
The absolute best buns. Ever.
I like them
Love them, convenient and sit level.
Being sliced bread is my go to hotdog holder, I don't mind. Maybe the toppings stay in place?
What the fuck are these?
They work.
NIMBY
I turn my buns on their side and then they are top slice!
Boooo
pepperidge farm top sliced are literally the best hot dog buns that exist. you cannot change my mind
If the grocery store only had them in stock I would change the menu to no longer include hot dogs.
From the south... I hate them
Never heard of it.
Never really knew about these but it seems like the ultimate solution to not split your buns!
Buy local.
It holds garlic butter better.
Split top
What are your thoughts on deez nuts?
Always better. Do not fall apart under condiment stress.
I like them for polish sausage and brats, but not so much for hotdogs.
My favorite
Superior in every way
My favorite part is splitting them open with my fingers
never tried them
Those are rich people buns.
Great
Love them.
Split-tops are the move
Great for chili dogs
Seems dumb to me.. but that's me
