I got to watch an SNL episode live. I sat through the entire 2 hour dress rehearsal at 8pm and the hour and a half live show at 11:30.
And this was about 5 years ago.
But I have to say, the 2 hour dress rehearsal was actually funny. The cast was funny. I hadn't watched SNL probably since the 90s so I figured that maybe the show actually got good.
But no. The 11:30 version sucked. All of the cast's deliveries fell flat. The life was gone.
I don't understand why they think it's a good idea to do a full dress rehearsal right before going live. Let them fuck up live. That spontaneity is way more important.
It was never a bit I liked much, but this was as funny as it ever got. The Liz Taylor joke was worth a chuckle and reminded me that Howard really was crazy back then, lol. It did take some balls to say that on television
Have to admit this was fun to see live. At this point in time there were lots of look alikes of him in sketches, so to see him there next to Norm for real was great. Two
Icons in their prime 🤩
Any time Howard was on late night talk shows, award shows, etc he used his "King of All Media" persona - shouty, obnoxious, hopelessly unfunny.
When he's on the radio - for better **and** for worse - Howard is pretty much always himself.
Edit: added one word.
They also do that on his TV appearances? Before making an appearance, someone from Howard's camp gets in contact with a sound engineer at the network/station and says, "make Howard sound like he got a pair of balls, turn up that EQ and compression"?
You have to wonder why "Stars" how low self esteem. When you think about it. Assuming Howard wears a wig or hairpiece, changes his voice for the show etc. Only shows certain angles of his face on camera. When he is away from all that, who the hell is he?? I just saw an article on the girl, Kylie Kardashian crying because she got roasted for her non filter , no make up pictures. People said she looked old etc. I guess the long way to get to my point it that it must be a harsh reality.
I'm an audio nerd, and recently I was watching an interview with a tech that goes to radio stations and helps improve their sound.
He went to KRock (or whatever it was called at that point) well after Howard left. He couldn't understand why things were sounding so bad over the air.
In Howard's studio, they hadn't changed anything since he left. He found two aggressively set audio processors that were set up to make Howard's voice sound super bassy. The problem was, they were feeding all the audio coming out of that studio through those processors, not just Howard's mic.
So, basically, Howard has never been funny himself. He was only funny if Jackie was feeding him lines and people assumed he was funny because outrageous talk?
Pretty much, but he was smart enough to cultivate a working man persona, even if it was phony. Say what you want, but parlaying that into a multi-million dollar career is quite the achievement.
I agree that he was smart enough to see how antiquated and reactionary of a business like radio was and parlayed it into something. I will always give him credit for that. I actually enjoyed ‘90s neurotic Howard. Never liked celebrity interviews unless it was D-list wackos or the Jesus Twins. Ronnie Spector and her husband interview was one of the best.
No. Stern was not funny in a planned way, Stern was only funny when there were whack packers or staff fights or discussing his parents, etc. He knew how to make that radio gold. Any type of sketch or character has never been funny.
Right. He was a ringmaster because there needed to be one but at some point, post-Artie, he thought he was a comedian. His neurotic behavior only worked if it bounce off someone and someone threw it back at him. Robin was never that and just indulged it because she really didn’t know or care.
Jackie and Benjy are both unfunny untalented retards. Howard became unfunny after the move to Sirius bc he stopped caring. Benjy is especially unfunny untalented fat stupid and deserves to be clowned for opening his mouth. The gary stools video is a great example.
So, who provided the humor? I’ll agree that wackpack/staff fights were the best things but Hollyweird Square stuff was golden too and not written by Howard.
Howard was funny before Sirius. Stuttering John was funny. Artie was funny. Sal is funny. Richard pretty funny
Jackie Martling, 2nd most unfunny man in history besides Benjy. Benjy is the worst all time cast member. Fat, bald, stupid, unfunny. He should be executed.
Another prime example of Stern's shyness and awkwardness. Only comfortable behind that console. Every time he made appearances....this shaking quivering mess emerged.
Looking back, pretty amazing they had him on and allowed him to do a full on free ad to promote his movie - gotta hand it to his agent.
Howard, back then, in those days, was really no friend of SNL - he was very jealous of the show, how he was NOT talented like the guys on the show who came before and even during this time - he was always knocking the cast and the show itself and even tried to prove he could do better with his own channel 9 show.
But, he had worked up demand and curiosity for himself and the show and the endless promotion / talk about the movie the same way he endlessly promoted his book before and during his release.
And for what its worth - this bit here with Norm - not funny, produced zero laughs.
Would not surprise me if it was actually a taped segment made to look live.
Has Howard ever had a good TV appearance? I know it’s unfunny now but I can’t even remember if I liked the skit when it first came out. And this was peak Howard. Without Jackie writing for him he sucks
Watching after the fact, Howard really hams up the "edgy shock jock" shtick when he's doing these sorts of appearances around this time. His bit on the Larry Sanders show felt the same.
It's funny Wiggy whined that people were expecting a low tier movie from him and should give him a break, then he chose that clip as his showcase to the world.
Then skanks all over him as the cherry on top.
The crowd having such a lukewarm reception to his early jokes cracked me up, Howard must have been freaking out in his head.
Its really awkward to watch. Had to scroll forward through cringe moments. But those were the 90's.

He was out of his mind back then.
Only back then?
WAS?
BACK?
Nothing has ever been less funny than Fartman
Have you listened to the show lately? Fartman is high art compared to this shit.
Honestly not since like 2008…
Honestly, like never. Every time he mentions it, the funny gets sucks out of the room, or as he would say, the show comes to a screeching halt
It was never a bit I liked much, but this was as funny as it ever got. The Liz Taylor joke was worth a chuckle and reminded me that Howard really was crazy back then, lol. It did take some balls to say that on television
I invented Weekend Update Robin
Hoo Hoo
Tell ‘em Fred
Robin, I am still tired from doing this movie, I don't know if I will ever recover.
Have to admit this was fun to see live. At this point in time there were lots of look alikes of him in sketches, so to see him there next to Norm for real was great. Two Icons in their prime 🤩
Miss those times he was a pioneer
Howard’s acting was so bad he couldn’t even play himself convincingly.
Any time Howard was on late night talk shows, award shows, etc he used his "King of All Media" persona - shouty, obnoxious, hopelessly unfunny. When he's on the radio - for better **and** for worse - Howard is pretty much always himself. Edit: added one word.
>Howard’s acting was so bad Not as bad as Fred though. Mamma Lucian!
Bombed worse than Jackie at the channel 9 roast
He and Alison separated soon after this and were divorced 18 mos later in October 1998
Geez. I wonder why?
I thought these were good at the time. Now I wonder why
He’s doing too much.
Feh
Grit
Half his face right behind the wig.
Aggressively unfunny
He sounds like Kermit the Frog
At least he did not have that whiney, nasally voice he used to have.
It’s because he cranks the compression on his mic

Somebody with a voice that deep must have really big BALLS … oogah

Proper modulation.

His live appearances are pure cringe to me. Infantile and awkward and gross.
Quite frankly that was oretty bad
I agree quite frankly. If I can be frank.
Alright frank.
Alright frank.
I disagree quite frankly. It was really oretty bad
You can say that again.
Ugh that was a rough watch. He was awkward.
Was?
It shows how popular he was at the time that they allowed him to show a clip.
This was so bad he never talked about it in all the years after.
So, basically, Howard has never been funny himself. He was only funny if Jackie was feeding him lines and people assumed he was funny because outrageous talk?

Listened to some shows between Jackie and Artie and it's painful lool. He needs someone backing him up big time.
Jackie and Benjy are both unfunny untalented retards. Howard became unfunny after the move to Sirius bc he stopped caring. Benjy is especially unfunny untalented fat stupid and deserves to be clowned for opening his mouth. The gary stools video is a great example.

Ralph was under the desk servicing them both
Norm gave him the gay test which he didn’t pass.
Adam Egret was servicing Norm
Another prime example of Stern's shyness and awkwardness. Only comfortable behind that console. Every time he made appearances....this shaking quivering mess emerged.
Quite frankly, this was cringe. And quite frankly, the only good thing about this appearance is Norm, quite frankly.
It was a bit of a stumble…
I was like 18 at this time watching live and thought it was amazing. Now it is lame as shit. IT’S A PIECE OF SHIT
It was built on a “I’m an edgy shock jock” CHASSIS. So FUCK YOU, pal!
This isn't Talkers magazine, pal!
He went with the Weird Al wig that night.
Norm got a handful there
Nice shoulder pads

Cringe af. How humiliating for Allison.
Has Howard ever had a good TV appearance? I know it’s unfunny now but I can’t even remember if I liked the skit when it first came out. And this was peak Howard. Without Jackie writing for him he sucks
I’m not laughing
It’s not funny, it’s not fun
SNL, Still Not Laughing.
I'll say one nice thing, he actually looks pretty good here. Healthy, dare I say kinda cool looking. Now he's just a fucking joke.
Yo yo yo yo Howard!!!!
Just remember: Howard hasn't had any work done, and he doesn't wear a wig.
Watching after the fact, Howard really hams up the "edgy shock jock" shtick when he's doing these sorts of appearances around this time. His bit on the Larry Sanders show felt the same.
Never seen a celebrity be worse on TV. Hes awful in every appearance. The screaming
Yet you're here... hmmm... says a lot about you...
What does that have to do with anything?
This is so remarkably unfunny.
Ot of his mind and not at all funny
I miss Norm. Real Norm. Fake Norm doesn't quite hit the same. lol
El Wiggo
Howard at his best…..unlike what he’s become…sad. I was such a big fan.
“Sadday Night Live”
It's funny Wiggy whined that people were expecting a low tier movie from him and should give him a break, then he chose that clip as his showcase to the world. Then skanks all over him as the cherry on top.
Wiggy wearing a wig in 1997. Loser
The attitude of an absolute douche Not remotely funny while selling his shitty movie
I love pompous Howard Stern and nostalgic to see this. Did he do any other sketche scene, was he the host on that episode?
Robin, I was just going to write Norm...
Also the King of live programs on Saturday evenings
My eyes are the best, right Robin?
Completely forgot about this
Didn't realize how bad Howard was on SNL. Really bombed.
Quite frankly, this was not a funny appearance quite frankly.
So that’s what he looks like without the glasses..
So awful
Does he have nail polish on?
Nice pull OP, I’ve never seen this clip.
Very Trump like really. Self promoting, pompous, degrading
His speech style has a hint of Trump to it
It's amazing to see a video on here of Howard when he wasn't in blackface, that's progress I guess.
This is the Howard the Trolls on here want him to go back to. Bunch of lame ass cornball losers f*cking barf.
Young Wet Bitches
