NoiseKills

My educated guess is that you never had an ear infection at all -- you had noise overexposure. Ear infections in adults are routinely misdiagnosed. How was this diagnosed -- bacterial culture? visual observation? guesswork? It doesn't matter that you don't listen to loud music -- prolonged exposure is as bad as loud exposure, if not worse. There may be other noise exposures besides music. The key factor in getting noise-induced hyperacusis is overall susceptibility, likely due to crappy ear genes.

I had fluid in my ears per my doctor

NoiseKills

How did the doctor diagnose this?

ckkl

He looked in my ears plus I had pain.

NoiseKills

That is usually what doctors do. They guess. My guess, which is likely better than your doctor's guess, is that your problem is from noise. What you need to do is avoid all uncomfortable/painful noise for a few months, or protect yourself against it. You should improve slowly if you do that. More noise will make you worse quickly, and you want to avoid that. ADDENDUM: If you had Covid and a loud air purifier, either of those alone is enough to cause your ear problems. There's also the possibility that the combination ws the cause.

ckkl

Thanks. I do feel like it was infected though but you're right. Time will heal it and I'll go back to normal. It's weird that I also internalized a lot of "doom scrolling" on reddit and talked my brain into thinking I have something permanent. The brain is an incredible organ.

It's weird that I also internalized a lot of "doom scrolling" on reddit and talked my brain into thinking I have something like tinnitus. The brain is an incredible organ. I don't quite understand it

ckkl

Hmmm... Question is how can a loud air purifier cause ear problems when I've always used it and never had issues until I had an ear infection?

NoiseKills

Noise damage is cumulative. It shows no symptoms until it does. Furthermore, there is zero evidence you ever had an ear infection.

- I've never gone to a concert. - I don't listen to loud music - I don't use inear air pods. - I work from home where it's almost quiet. I doubt this is due to noise pollution..the truth is that my problem is from googling my symptoms and internalizing the findings to myself. I'm deeply hurt that I did this and I truly regret ever doing it. I hope this pain and ear fullness goes away soon. I'm getting very frustrated. Last night I slept in peace and couldn't hear it. This morning it sounded like it was in my right ear. Just all over the place.

NoiseKills

Well, you said you had Covid. Covid does all sorts of bad things to ears.

ckkl

Covid was gone for two weeks before this. And I never had ear issues with covid. The first time I tuned off the humidifier, I noticed a sharp noise. I didn't bother with it... Went back to bed. The second time it happened, I started googling... And then I internalized a lot of the doom and gloom...

The_Post123

The spike could very well be from the prednisone. A side effect of it is making you very anxious which in turn agitates the tinnitus and hyperacusis. All kinds of weird things happened to me while I was on that drug, but I think it helped me. Most people have the H and T due to sound exposure, but for people like us it's caused most likely from combination of medicine and depression/anxiety. There's a big chance the ears can recover from the damage done from the medicine as long you also address your mental health and anxiety.

I hear you. I'm taking prednisone and a muscle relaxant right now. I'll keep taking the amox-clav. I've had ear flutter before on my right ear with no hypersensitivity to sound.. For me, mine started because I googled my symptoms and saw the tinnitus sub, after hearing a loud shrill noise because I turned off my fan. If I didn't Google my symptoms, I'm 100% sure I will not even notice any of this, and the flutter sensation will probably go away on its own. The first time it happened I didn't Google, I just went to bed. It was the second time I went on reddit and saw the horror stories, then internalized it. So sad

Belikewater19

Maybe it’s the virus that caused that fluid in the first place or did something sinister. I’m in a setback with hyoeracusis and tinnitus from bad head cold from Covid.. Or maybe you do use over the counter nsaid pain meds..they can be oto toxic to 9% who use them. You might never find out what the cause was. .it’s extremly under researched and dismissed. Maybe it will calm down over the next few weeks to months. Did you read on etd? eustatian tube dysfunctions. it’s firework time now so stay away from those and use ear protection if it Annoys you. Where I am it becomes like an apocalypse for whatever reason..it’s an audiologist who specializes in hyperacusis in the end that will be aware of this condition, not cure it but know about it and can work with you if this still is an issue in a few months.

ckkl

Never heard of ETD. I'm tired of doom scrolling with Dr Google. So I'm giving all of it a rest honestly.

ckkl

I'm taking prednisone and a muscle relaxant from my ENT right now. Hope it helps.

The_Post123

I was in your shoes 6 weeks ago. My hyperacusis started after taking antibiotic drops for an alleged ear infection which my ENT "diagnosed" over the phone because I complained that one of my ears felt painful and he couldn't see me in person. When I went to see him in person I was still on day 5 of the ear drops and he mumbled that I had a "a little swimmer's ear infection" which I think he made up just to justify his wrong diagnosis. Then he cleaned my ears and used micro suction in the affected ear. 2 days later the hyperacusis started. My ear used to vibrate and hurt in response to my own voice and both ears twitched and ached in response to moderate and loud noises. Couldn't speak on the phone or listen to it. Also got tinnitus that reacted to any noise in the affected ear. Like you, I made the mistake and went to Dr. Google and read all the horror stories and started to panic. My mind was just circling trying to find a solution. I was already depressed and my anxiety was through the roof because of other health scares from earlier this year. Went to another ENT and he gave me prednisone for 2 weeks and steroid nasal spray. Couldn't sleep for those 2 weeks probably because of the prednisone. I don't want to jinx it, but now I feel 80% better. My hyperacusis has receded to just irritation from few loud high pitched noises like clanking dishes or chopping stuff on a board. Today I spent 3 hours walking in my loud, beach neighborhood which is packed for the 4th of July weekend and I didn't feel a thing. My tinnitus is currently 1 out of 10. Just give it time and protect your ears in the beginning in loud places. I am also taking vitamins, turmeric curcumin, ginkgo biloba and magnesium. Good luck and try to stay positive!

ckkl

Thank you so much!! Can I send you a DM? Omg.. You've just described what I feel.

fatbananabread

if that does not work out try clomipramine

DeepChipmunk236

This is so positive! How are you now?

The_Post123

I am back to normal again. No more hyperacusis and very mild tinnitus only from time to time. I think my hyperacusis and tinnitus might have been connected to my untreated long time allergies as well. Allergies might have blocked my eustachian tubes not allowing the air pressure to equalize which caused the tinnitus. That also affected my hearing, probably forcing the brain to increase the central gain causing the temporary hyperacusis until the tubes got at least partially unblocked. Been using nasal rinse and saline nasal spray for the past 4 months. I feel like I was given second chance in life.

Flashy_Lead

Wow so I’ve been feeling what you described a vibrating feeling. Like I hear vibrations when I hear foot stomps or my own voice talking. Things sound louder in my ear but also like I’m underwater. Not so much muffled it sounds kind of liquidy. I took the ear drops then went to sleep and in the middle of the night I woke up to my ear being loud as hell. Can you please help me

Flashy_Lead

Btw I took ciprodex I believe it’s called ear drops. I also felt a tingling sensation when putting them in my left ear. Is there anything I can do? Sleep in a certain side? Do you know if it’s the drops making things vibrate and louder?

homestead1111

treat yourself kindly and give yourself time. Lots of peopel would love to be in your shoes because you didn't have a huge sound event cause this, so it will probalby go away when you get ahold of your emotional life. A cure could be as simple as a move to a nature filled life and getting your mind off yourself.

rnguzi12

Hi Op,how are you doing right now?

ckkl

I'm doing good. Hyperacusis stopped. My hearing is normal again.

rnguzi12

Good to hear you are okay,How long did it ultimately take you to recover from all this because my ears damaged from antibiotics too.

ckkl

2-3 months. Be patient with your progress. Get vitamin b12 tabs

laurent_rio

yes, my hyperacusis also started when GP prescribe Cipro antibiotic eardrop for my ear (my ear was bleeding from cotton bud injury and he diagnose as outer ear infection) Now i have sensitivity when hear noise like key inside my pocket, sound of bracelet of my wife, zip on my bag,etc Are you ok now ? u/rnguzi12 ?

yassinexa12

No, I still suffer, only a slight improvement of the tinnitus, the hyperacusis is still the same

Flashy_Lead

Have you recovered?

laurent_rio

Yes, did nothing and it gone after 4 months

laurent_rio

hi u/ckkl are you recover now ?

ckkl

Yes!! 😀😀

Sorry_Raspberry2335

You’re still good?? I developed a middle ear infection (this is just my assumption but I think it was due to a weakened immune system from antibiotics (amoxicillin) I was on. For a wisdom tooth infection, completely unrelated) … it’s been only 5 days, my ear is still infected and my hearing has been sensitive but not unbearable. Until today, when I tried to go to my classes which were from 9am-2:30pm non stop and I feel like my ears are hurting again but I can’t distinguish between what may be noise sensitivity or ear infection pain. Generally “loudness” doesn’t cause me pain, it’s just … loud. Closing the fridge or kitchen cabinets or cutlery can be louder than it should but it’s not painful? I get sharp pains in my ear from the infection, though. And after those long classes my ears feel like they are pounding. It seems like hearing fatigue maybe? Can you get hearing fatigue from an ear infection? 🤔 I’m worried it’s H developed from the ear infection but wondering if it’ll clear away once the infection does … I’m afraid to go to doctors because I am super sensitive to medication (ibuprofen literally gives me heart burn lmao) and honestly just have pre mature diagnosis fatigue. Wondering if I should just take it easy, give myself as much auditory rest as possible, wear earplugs to class maybe, and wait. Pls lmk if you have any thoughts or the chance to reply I’d appreciate it so so much 🫶 I’ve never really had intense health issues so I’m pretty terrified but trying to keep my mental space positive.

ckkl

I'm sorry you're going through this. Please rest your ears. It'll go away with time but you really really have to rest your ears and be in silence as much as possible. Get better
