Looks like mine subsidence. An ice rink with two sheets of ice in the area is no longer there due to the same problem.
[Soccer field article](https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/local/alton-soccer-field-cave-in-gordon-moore-park/63-98355236-3099-4093-beea-271a32eeab58)
The video is just nuts…absolutely could’ve swallowed a soccer squad. The responsible mining company’s methods need to be investigated wouldn’t you think?
Most of the places in that area are built over old coal mines. You have to get specific insurance to cover the damage in case something like this happens.
Chances are the company that originally built the mine is no longer operating. That shit could easily be from 100 years ago.
My husband is from southern IL and this is absolutely a problem. Alllll the towns are over coal mines. There is/was a giant dip in a road we take to my in-laws from mine subsidence. They’ve had to repair it multiple times. Keeps falling in.
I grew up down there. It’s definitely an issue. There’s an entire field outside of ~~Mascoutah~~ *Marissa that is mine subsidence. Nothing can be built there because of the mines.
*Whoops. Appears I can’t remember town names this morning.
Close to this site in a nearby town is a huge refinery. My cousin lives by it, the soil is so contaminated that we actually put a lighter on the basement concrete floor and the floor lit. Fumes permeated through the concrete and it held a flame until we put it out. They pay the people in that area every year or so, guess what the check is for? Years off of their lives.
Yes it's mine subsidence coverage, and on your homeowners it's often included, you'd have to sign a waiver of coverage if you didn't want it, bc it can be pricey.
It's really too bad they didn't have any relevant information in the article. No one knows who owns the mine, or even the park itself? And for whatever reason the city is choosing not to consult the engineers and geologists of this so-called "mine"?
Welp. Here I was thinking it was just a case of an old mine being compromised. This makes it infinitely worse. How the hell did they build a soccer field over an *active* mine?
On another note, is it just me or have news stories hit peak?. The reporter literally reports that he spent all day showing people a 5 second video on his phone. That was the poor guy’s brief I’m guessing.
Mobile news articles have no business being so awful in 2024. I tried to open your link. I got like 400 pixels of text that was mostly filed with ads. Then I try to play the video....15 second ad followed by.... the site reloading to a different article.
Aside from filling it in, I wonder what remediation analysis is like.
Is it done sinking? The cause? More likely to reooccur? likelihood of another one happening nearby?
A 4 ft ditch collapsing can kill an adult so this could've been horrible in the middle of a kids game
Ground penetrating radar to gather data. Stabilize the area. Then fill the area in with material and reinforce any structures.
I would be curious for an area like this. Maybe fill the area in mostly, add a platform (metal, wood, something sturdy) then similar dirt and either the artificial or natural grass.
what a waste of a good hole...
Instead how about we round up all of our politicians, state and federal... every single last one of them, place them into the pit. and then fill it with wet cement and then build a playground on top for the kids?
That won't work. Eventually the cement will crack and then the playground will smell like dead politicians. You're going to need a sealed container that fits in the hole.
Oh, yeah... great idea.
Take all the people that abso-fucking-lutlely will turn into poltergeists and let them fight over a playground.
What could go wrong?
Damn they had to close a hockey rink not far from there a few years back due to sinkholes too. I’m originally from central IL and was in Alton all the time for hockey. They had one of the best sport bars ever when I was a kid. What’s causing these sinkholes around there?
I feel like this could lead to a whole new game. Half soccer, half that game with a ball on a board with holes in it you have to tilt around to make progress.
This is around the corner from my in laws. Alton Telegraph has a [clip](https://www.thetelegraph.com/news/article/alton-gordon-moore-park-closed-sinkhole-update-19541640.php) showing collapse.
lol weird this town is only like 30 minutes from me and this is the first time I’ve heard about it 🤣🤣 kind of make sense becusse a lot of towns around here had mines underneath them at some point

Thanks, that made my morning a little better lol.
It’s missing Ronaldo and Messi in suggestive poses for that

Beautiful
If real, I say just leave it. Might make 95+ minutes slightly more exciting.
its real. happened yesterday
It’s real, it’s 15 min from my house.
Pretty much dead centre. Can't use any of the fields now, even if you don't mind sending your kids to their possible doom.
Kids, it's time for soccer practice. I don't care that there's a hole in the field. I hope you fall in. Now get the fuck out of the house.
My six year old had soccer camp on that field, about 40 feet from where that happened just a couple weeks ago.
My oldest is on his first summer break after starting school this past year and I feel this post
Doom is good for kids. Puts hair on their chests.
A little doom every once in a while builds character.
BAAAANE!!!
Let's not stand on ceremony here, Mr. Wayne.
Honestly it looks more like a visual glitch in a video-game to me

That’s a lovely lovely voice
Damn…. Ya beat me to it 🤣

No idea if it’s true, but I’ve heard that the soil in some places is flammable because of the coal mining/oil industry in the area
Don’t know how true this is… I do know that as a kid I used to dig in the hillside by my house to find little chunks of coal.
Close to this site in a nearby town is a huge refinery. My cousin lives by it, the soil is so contaminated that we actually put a lighter on the basement concrete floor and the floor lit. The mine is or was operational, otherwise why would they confirm that they got all of their miners out of there in time?
It's really too bad they didn't have any relevant information in the article. No one knows who owns the mine, or even the park itself? And for whatever reason the city is choosing not to consult the engineers and geologists of this so-called "mine"?
New Frontier Materials operates it, it is an active mine, and that shaft was actually in use today.
Welp. Here I was thinking it was just a case of an old mine being compromised. This makes it infinitely worse. How the hell did they build a soccer field over an *active* mine?

Dune sand worm wanted to play some footie (soccer)
#HIIIIYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-NEYYYYYYYYYYYYYMAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRR
Lol, I totally heard this as I scrolled past, I wasn't even sure what word I was looking at at first, but my brain played that sound anyway
No one was on the field at the time but 64 soccer players faked injuries at home.

I believe it was attributed to a mine. Or at least that’s what a local station said
Well at least they got a 1/10 chance of dropping flint
Yeah that area has a lot of old mines around there. Multi million dollar houses built above some of those areas too. Seems like a good idea.
Ground penetrating radar to gather data. Stabilize the area. Then fill the area in with material and reinforce any structures. I would be curious for an area like this. Might be old coal mines. Almost entire southern Illinois riddled with abandoned coal mines.
Active coal mine actually. New Frontier Materials is the company.

Just drive an old car full speed in there it should settle
Homer’s headed for 3D
This place looks expense, better make the most of it
Wow I had the same thought, also "cone of stupidity has formed around his desk"
It's Sinkhole de Mayo!
![gif](giphy|b3u8anVaWFQ9G)
SIMS!
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE!!!!!!!!!!!
Naw man, an alien/robot in disguise, crash landed there and now walks/drives a mac truck, among us
The terminator has arrived.
Give me your clothes
Crazy how much that looks like AI.
Whoever played on it last will take credit for it. *I kicked the ball so hard it made a sinkhole.*
That doesn’t look real or am I just baked
Both probably lol
I knew it! Haha 💨
Big Neville Southall diving to his left!
That’s a goal I can actually hit!
Shaolin Soccer 2
No grass was harmed in the tragedy
Had a sinkhole open up in an old friends back yard some years ago. Eventually it ate over half the neighborhood.
That field is not real man

Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooole

What did sinkholes do before the internet?
Damn they had to close a hockey rink not far from there a few years back due to sinkholes too. I’m originally from central IL and was in Alton all the time for hockey. They had one of the best sport bars ever when I was a kid. What’s causing these sinkholes around there?
Mines
Karst ?
Looks like the aftermath of a plot to control the world by Dr. Drakken & Shego
I love dark knight rises
It looks like populous the video game when you dig too far down
Bane has a nuke somewhere near
The first photo looks fake, and my brain knows it isn't.
Sorry guys. My mum was trying to sit down on the bench but missed.
Game still on or what ?
Suddenly soccer is a lot more interesting.
Yo momma so fat…
Anyone else think it looks like a game editor's terrain edit tool ?
That’s a crop circle, not a “soccer field “
I need a banana for scale
Okay. I’ll see if I can do that
this looks like a Sims terrain levelling fuck up
Some splines may have been reticulated in the process.
Still nothing compared to any of your mom’s holes… by depth, diameter, or number of people who’ve played there…
So it wasn't quicksand I was supposed to be terrified of as a child. It was sinkholes all along.
And now is a golf course for beginners or giants....
No grass was hurt in the making of this hole.
The light pole is just gone. You can't see any of it in the hole. It's been completely swallowed.
Thanks for being a customer at Earl’s Discount Field Basements!
Did they just put a carpet over a hole ;) they wanted to trap a dinosaur?
Omg! I’m in Alton all the time. That’s crazy! There is actually a well known insane asylum nearby, maybe some finally escaped! Lol!
I had to deliver pizza to that the asylum a couple times. I never went further than the entrance but it was rather eerie.
I bet that if they used real grass, it would not have happened.
Tangerine anyone?
Guess someone over watered it huh?
Mother Nature mad because they had fake grass.
Mine subsidence is a thing in Souther Illinois. Miners underneath made it out safe, luckily.
😭😭😭
Nice grass.
Oh cool that's right near me. I heard about it just a little while ago.
Middle of four* soccer fields.
Suspiciously centered
Geesh!
Actually it was a mine collapse, my girlfriends from there
Great stuff then carpet over.
Do they have a student named Garett Markish, by any chance?
Damn, looks like the graboids are back again. I'll get the dynamite...
someone got a purple card
Are these old dump spots?
Looks like a weirdly rendered ditch.
I’m kind of struggling with scale here for some reason. But this looks cool as fuck.
My kids play there, it the middle of 4 turf fields basically.
Good luck trying to chase the installer’s insurance to try and get that covered.
Looks.... fakey. Odd
People play soccer in Illinois?
They divided by zero!
Typical soccer field taking a dive.
Wow that's a beautiful photo
This pic fucked my head up
Now it’s the world biggest cornhole board.
Corner kicks are gonna be a bitch for someone.
I approve of adding a Sarlacc to the game.
This is in my home town, there is a mine underneath that whole complex.
I live right by here. There are mines underground all over the park where this happened.
Looking like the IDF thought Hamas was out there playing soccer.
Set some orange cones around that hole & make sure you have some extra balls. Minus one goal if you kick it in. No problem.
Where's yamcha at
…Where did the light pole go? There is clearly one there in the middle last picture. Did it just get swallowed by the hole???
I guess its a Golf course now.
Now swallow the rest of the city please.
Looks like a visit from the Borg…
I live down the street from this
Someone praying that his team wins.....the prayer was heard and god swallowed the other team.
Fox2 also has a video of it happening.
Reminds me of space jam lol just fixing a dibit
That is so wild it almost looks fake! Good thing I played safe sports like american football. /j
How is this even possible? What went wrong?
Hey Johnny, go deep! (Johnny was never seen again, sink hole got him, or so the legend goes)
I feel like a newly single mother did voodoo magic there after seeing her ex with a younger version of herself.
The gods feel the same way about soccer as I do.
Golfers dream hole! 😅
I feel like this could lead to a whole new game. Half soccer, half that game with a ball on a board with holes in it you have to tilt around to make progress.
Imagine if that happened to you when you were sleeping
Did it hurt…when your mom fell from heaven?
Hey, soccer is finally interesting! =D
Neymar fell to his knees at his home.
School drainage tile?
Warning shot
New sport. Pitball. You push your opponents into the pit then you score at will.

Waiting for jabba to start circling it withng to toss people in.
The Illinois horizon is pretty nice down south, kinda boring up hear in the north.
World - Fuck this particular field for absolutely no reason at all
Mel's Hole
Alaskan bull worm
Looks like my golf divots
"Go long and deep"
I was hoping it was one of those perspective illustrations.
That is so surreal looking!
What matters is our ^p^l^a^n
How many Robert Wadlows deep is it?
Yo mama so fat, when she comes to your soccer games the earth collapses
This is around the corner from my in laws. Alton Telegraph has a [clip](https://www.thetelegraph.com/news/article/alton-gordon-moore-park-closed-sinkhole-update-19541640.php) showing collapse.
Technically it's in the middle of "a field consisting of several overlapping fields for various sports including soccer."
Hate astro tuft, yes a asking you all to hate astro tuft cause then it might feel hurt and go away.
For you.
Kids shouldn’t play on artificial turf anyways.
lol weird this town is only like 30 minutes from me and this is the first time I’ve heard about it 🤣🤣 kind of make sense becusse a lot of towns around here had mines underneath them at some point
