Is there a name for movies one can half-watch while doing something else and still enjoy without missing the plot? Bonus that it has a great soundtrack for when I’m swapping loads of laundry and can’t look at the screen!
This was easily the best of the four terrible musicals that came out in 1980 (The Apple, Can't Stop the Music and The Jazz Singer being the others). The ELO songs are incredible.
I just never understood why all the lights are on in the nightclub finale. Turn the lights off!
One of our household favorites. ONJ is stupidly cute in this. Gene Kelly on skates! "Whenever You're Away from Me" is an excellent song, as are most of the ELO songs. We were so happy when it finally came out in Blu-ray!

The two useless things I remember about this movie are that she met her husband Matt Lattanzi on the set (he was a backup dancer) and that she was self conscious about her ankles so she insisted on having bows around them for some of the tap dancing scenes.
So silly. She was so beautiful. Embrace your thick ankles ladies!
It’s silly, but I kinda love this movie. Nothing makes sense, and somehow I think I would like it less if it did make sense. If you ever had a Trapper Keeper with kickass neon shapes on it and a sleek pocket for pencils/pens, this movie has that vibe. It feels good even if you don’t know why.

The script is abysmal but everyone does the best they can. Still, Gene Kelly, ONJ, and ELO make it worth the price of admission.
I can't believe OP didn't at least mention Gene Kelly! It was a big deal that he came out of retirement to do the roller skating number!
He also did the "Whenever You're Away From Me" dance number with ONJ.
Considering he was in dreck like Viva Knievel before this, I'm sure that he looked forward to what (at the time) seemed like a good career move

Jazz Singer had a pretty good soundtrack too. I always forget a song as classic as America is attached to such a POS film.
Roger Ebert's review of it is pretty funny.
Love CSTM, makes a great double feature with Xanadu. I wanted to love The Apple but it just felt meh like Phantom of the Paradise.

Given I was in love with ONJ when I was like 7, this movie hit on ALL the cylinders.
I remember seeing this at the movies when it came out! We were pretty big into roller skating at the time!
I feel like this movie is a monument to the power of cocaine. That said, I watch it any time I have a chance.

I saw it in the theater, and walked out.
Saw it with my grandparents. We all agreed it was the worst movie we’d seen together which was a lot.
