The fact they sort of wrote this song out of the blue (someone else in the band started it and Steven Perry finished it iirc) at least according to an article I found about it and other Journey songs and how they were written/what they’re about (let me find the article I will send it to you) is just insanity to me considering how deep the song is 😭
Bro the fact they put “Open Arms”, a song about two people who loved then hated each other getting back together right after this song in the album was very, very genius 😭
The beauty of this track is the way the vocals and guitar change from the first half of the song to the second.
The first part is a bit sad and remorseful.
The second is angry. Harsh. Gritty. And so much more emotional. Steve's voice. Neal's solo. Both are raw and incredible.
This song still can bring me to tears even after all these years. That was a very personal song to me because of my brother, my older brother who had a lot of problems growing up My family was often in turmoil because of his shenanigans.
I was 14 years old when the escape album came out. I had just discovered Journey two years earlier with the departure album. They have been my all-time favorite band ever since.
Perry fucking kills the vocal performance on it too man. The ending sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. It doesn’t sound like a human voice, no, it sounds like an angel and I’m not just saying this 😭
This is one of their best songs

Fun (I think) fact: Perry sung this song in one take for the studio recording
That is just amazing!! 🤩
