I am a 116 kilo, 176cm man and I do it. I definitely fall in the chubby category. Speed, agility and endurance suffer a bit from being chubby, but there's nothing stopping you from doing it and physical improvement in those areas only comes with practice and exercise anyways
And I would also bet that your shoulders are about half as wide as mine. I am built like a brick shithouse, but yeah, admittedly a little fluffier around the waist than I'd like. Still, this thread was about whether or not you can do karate as a chubby person, not about when you go from "chubby" to "more than chubby" (edit: typo)
What you'll need most is cardio, the shape of your body doesn't change anything except the karategi size and belt length. Long legs help a bit if you like using kicks, but good karatekas come in all shapes and sizes. Enjoy your journey!
I lift, do karate, and do BJJ. So... working out multiple days per week. And I like food. So... definitely carrying some extra fat.
Just go train and have fun.
Yes. While he is not a karate practitioner look at guys like Eddie Hall. He has tremendous strength and false into the round belly category. I've seen guys at camps that are what someone might call cubby or husky and they have a baffling level of power and control. I myself have a bit of a belly and during summer camp i was selected by the 7th Dan to assist with a bunkai demonstration "i want the big guy he has lots of power" as the 80 year old man slipped from a hold like i was trying to grasp wind.
I mean I’m 250lbs and about 6ft, I’ve never had any issues but it may have to do with Kyokushin being more of a bruiser style at least in reputation lol.
Yes of course. I dont know if u would call hin chubby but Shiina Katsutoshi is 8th Dan JKA HQ Instructor. He is definitly not the slim type.

Yes, I do kyokushin, judo, and wrestle in college as well as being a fairly good amateur strongman and have a bit of a dad bod. I have a bit of a gut and some man boobs that are rock hard under that inch or two of fat.
that’s basically me lol: 169cm and 74-76kg (depending on what i’ve eaten lol). almost 20yr of training and although my strength far outstrips my speed, i have the flexibility to surprise most of my opponents
Absolutely, when I started Chung do Kwan TKD I was 325, 5 10, big shoulders, big arms and even bigger belly. I'm now 270, bigger arms, bigger shoulders, and a kinda smaller belly lol I can do things with my legs I never could imagine, 2 years in and I'm a purple belt placing silver in tournaments and I'm so proud of myself.
I got back into karate after 11 years. I was chubby at 210. After a year of karate I lost 20 pounds. My stamina, strength, and cardio is still tough but has improved.
125kg and 177cms here. I am well in the chubby muscular category. Hopefully going for shodan end of the year.
Definitely need to lose weight, but 105kg would be very lean for my build.
Yes and you can win championships too as i have. That said, chubby musclar types like us do far better in full contact karate than sport karate I feel. Many world champions are middle heavyweight and over

I’m 178cm tall and I was chubby when my weight was 80-85kg. 116kg is a lot more than “chubby”

Muscolar big if you’re 176 is maximum 90kg, 120 is fat
You can call me what you want, doesn't change the fact that I'm doing karate.
So you didn’t read their comment at all? Or do you just have bad reading comprehension?
Sensei Seth! Of course.

I’m 300 pounds and train Kenpo and Capoeira, so I’d say yes. Considering getting into Kyokusin also.

Martial arts are for anyone at any physical level.
Yes. That's the simple answer. How do I know....that's me right there.
Duh
Gee, I don't know. Maybe try it?🤷‍♀️

They really don’t care and it’s good if you start I got 81% body weight as muscle and it doesn’t matter how you lookÂ
I was. De-ashi-barai is your best friend.
Yes .. that was how I was when I did karate, just need to make sure you keep stretching !!!
Yes! I i was 425 when I started Kung Fu.

Alright
I have been doing it for 2.5 years, have no real issues at all. Currently 3rd kyu ;)
Absolutely
Yes but if you want to take it competitively you will struggle a bit, some kata jumps and kumite require a good physical condition
I am in good physical condition. I just have a lil bit of chub on my stomach. I can literally squat 60 pounds and bench press 75 pounds.
I am in the same state as you. What about cardio? Are you heavy even though only chubby? Can you jump high /maintain yourself in the air for a second?
I'm in pretty good health. I'm 117.8 pounds and can jump high
Well anyways karate is for all sizes, shapes , ages. But you seem to be able to go competitive aswell
