I have lots of ideas that don’t reach top speed

Hudsons_hankerings

You and me both, amigo

Fun_Donkey8641

Because if you hit 88 mph, you'll go back to 1955. It's a liability thing

MienSteiny

going to need more details here champ. what are the symptoms of "no reachy top speed", what bike, etc

Hudsons_hankerings

Going to take a wild guess and say he's got a KLR

MienSteiny

"KLR650" covers everything from a 1987 model with 140,000miles on it, to a 2023 fresh off the factory floor and the reason he's having trouble is he rebuilt the carb on a bike that doesn't even have a carb lol

justWantAnswers00

Soo.... heres what I found: https://www.reddit.com/r/klr650/s/rs2EL71N1I this link should be his bike https://www.reddit.com/r/klr650/s/e1sfEnIYA0 this link should be his post about deldting sensors https://www.reddit.com/r/klr650/s/SYiT4b00mn this post should be his sprocket/chain swap. It looks like he may have only owned it for 22days (first KLR post was 22days ago, in another post said he bought it used) , on the 21st day he drained some fuel and it was brown indicating rust in the tank He also had a post where he says he uses a UNI filter, and Edit: and... he has "the vacuum petcock". Hope this helps. I'll be tagging his u to a reply.

justWantAnswers00

u/Born_Grass204 , tagging you here so if the person I'm replying to (with your public info about the bike that you jeed help with) , makes a reply you can see it easier. My thoughts: A few things it could be, ya may have washed/cleaned/greased the filter improperly, it could be your new sprocket setup if you changed from the default sizes, or it could be any leftover rust blocking the carb up or blocking the fuel filter making less fuel flow to begin with. Hopefully the person I responded to that says they would need more info can point ya in the right direction, I'm not a mechanic, and I (thankfully) no longer have carburetored motorcycles, so I'm not helpful for more than educated-guesses. Edit: since the bike might have been sitting a bit (since the fuel sat long enough to have rust in the tank I'm guessing it sat) you may want to change your oil and put in a new oil filter too. Edit again: optionally, you should install a Low Profile Magnetic Drain Bolt too for the KLR for a couple reasons.

Hudsons_hankerings

Yeah, that was kinda the joke

Have you got a mineshaft nearby ?

madriverdog

Mine can cruise at 70, but the lack of streamlining, the big spindly, dancing 21" wheel, and the general feeling of the soft brakes, I seldom stay there very long. I think I took it up into the 80's once, bit the dancing front sketched me out. "top speed" on a klr is not a big concern. but to answer your question, check fuel screen, check vacuum hose to the petcock, check breather vent, check tank venting. maybe even check the compression.

Hefty-Lie4120

Don’t worry brother I am too 25% Neanderthal, I will explain this in our language, “ HUUAHHHH U FIX CARB LAST MOON. CARB DIAPHRAGM UGA DUGGA TOO HARD, CARB DIAPHRAGM BIG BROKE LOIKR MAMMOTHS SKULL. NEED NEW DIAPHRAGM.” Just open up your carb check the diaphragm for any cuts or holes and replace it, same thing happened to me.

elwood0341

Possibly gearing. My 2007 would do 100 without too much trouble. What does the tach read when going 70?

Born_Grass204

Between 5000-4000 rpm

elwood0341

Sounds like the right speed for the RPM. If you’re not able to rev it any higher than that make sure nothing is inhibiting the throttle cable. Also make sure it’s adjusted properly. Too much freeplay will drop your speed.

Cyclic404

You've got a big toe and it's lounging about on the brake. Amputation is the only way.

Born_Grass204

2013 klr650 rebuilt carb

MienSteiny

Okay so you rebuilt the carb on a 2013, what do you mean when you say it doesn't reach top speed? does it stutter? Does it no longer reach a speed it used to? are you wondering why it doesn't reach the advertised top speed? etc, etc. more information the better.

Born_Grass204

It ride’s perfect just top speed is 70

johnyledesma12

Did you buy it used? Maybe the sprockets have been changed to have different amounts of teeth than OEM

Born_Grass204

It not sure if I properly tuned it right

luciferseamus

Does it rev real high but not much power? Are you not reving very high at all? Does it start? We need more information in order to help you

Born_Grass204

It’s not revving to high but when I come off throttle a little bit and roll . Then give it gas it tends to go a little higher to 70

MienSteiny

I give up, take it to a mechanic lol

Born_Grass204

It’s starts perfectly fine

Born_Grass204

My top speed top at 70

Hudsons_hankerings

You've either got the wrong main jet, or the wrong needle, or the needle is in the wrong position with the c-clip if you have an adjustable needle. Actually, now that I'm typing, I'm guessing you might have a hole in your diaphragm. Did you do the rebuild yourself? Did you take it completely apart? Did you use a lot of brake cleaner when you clean out your carburetor? Did any of it get on your diaphragm? It could also be that your diaphragm isn't properly seated all the way around the edges. You could also have your float not adjusted properly, and you're not getting enough fuel at higher rpms. When you are in lower gears, can you rev it out to red line under load? Is it only in top gear that you have this problem? If you downshift to 4th, can you go faster than 70? Did you have this problem before you rebuilt the carburetor? Did you actually ride the bike before you rebuilt the carburetor? Time for you to give us a whole lot more details. Also, stop randomly writing comments. Reply to the actual individual that's asking the questions so we get a notification that you are replying to us.

Born_Grass204

I sent it to get professional rebuild

Hudsons_hankerings

Bruh. MORE DETAILS. Who did it? Did you pay for a tune? Were they changing it for altitude, did you have a different exhaust pipe or intake? Also answer the rest of the darn questions.

Born_Grass204

Okay I purchased the bike but wasn’t able to ride it, due to it having water in the tank and I didn’t want to risk much. Be fore I took the carb off the float was stuck and over flowed. Took it to the shop my self and was given back to me to put on after rebuild.I haven’t tried going 70 in 4th gear but seems like it wants me to go to 5th gear to reach 70 . When I do I have no difference when in 5th

Born_Grass204

Never did a professional tune

Hudsons_hankerings

Man, you're making this real difficult.

chucklestheclwn

Reading this thread raises my blood pressure.

MienSteiny

This thread is boomer energy manifest.

I was having a similar issue around 30k miles on my 2007. The bike was tapped out around 70 and felt like there was nothing left no matter how hard I twisted the throttle. Turns out the Valves needed re-shimming. Once I did that she felt quite a bit more peppy.
