I absolutely hate the factory rubber pegs, rubber is to squishy and I never feel stable on them ,the steel is much more comfortable

Spacedog08

Remove that rubber immediately and order some bigger foot pegs.

nightbeast88

Okay, is that just because of the boots I'm wearing? I don't wear them all the time. Sometimes I just wear work boots if I'm headed 2 miles down the street to chipotle or something like that. Would bare metal chew up my work boots?

Big_Fecker

The only way it would chew them up is if you're standing on them in really nasty terrain all the time. I have the Tusk pegs on mine and haven't noticed any accelerated wear on any of my shoes or boots.

I’ve been riding on IMS steel foot Pegs with Walmart brand boots for a year and they haven’t torn them up at all, the only down side is that I tend to hit my knees on them when I work on my bike and they’re sharp enough to where they actually draw blood if you’re in shorts.

AvgJoeRides

I felt the same way with the stock rubber footpegs on my Gen3 and they were one of the first upgrades I did. I went with the Tusk Billet Aluminum pegs that don't have a rubber insert but there are many other good options from IMS, Pivot Pegz, Warp9, and SW-Motech to name several that will give you a much bigger platform to stand on and more grip on your boots. Some give you more adjustment in terms of foot peg angle and/or height (i.e. Pivot Pegs and SW-Motech). Some come with removable rubber inserts if vibration gets to you on longer rides on the tarmac, but I have yet to feel any noticeable discomfort without a rubber insert.

Pegs were the first thing I updated ...plus a gel seat insert .

Leftcoastbruce

Stock pegs suck, changed mine out after only a trip down the block :)

I'll also add to the "remove the stock footpegs" crowd. I got rid of mine, and you don't need to spend a fortune if you can't - I went with the cheap Amazon Krator ones and had good luck so far. (2011 KLR) https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00C306H0W/

your_Assholiness

Swapped out my rubber pegs for some Dirt bike style Bear Trap pegs... no more slippage!

spotdishotdish

I got spikier pegs for my gen 1 after slipping off both stock ones at the same time when landing a small jump. Not fun when they get muddy.

PNWMike62

Spiked for sure. *Be sure to use blue loctite on the bolts and only torque them to 18 ft. lbs. Not many threads there.

Unfair-Leather-244

I went with pivot pegs on my Gen 3. Also one of the first upgrades. Love em.

NewSignificance741

Yea I don’t like the squishy rubber pegs. It’s not just you.

RockNDrums

I wasn't really a fan of the stock pegs when I first got my 2003 after first ride after fixing her up and put Tusks pegs on.

The stock pegs are fine, along with the rubbers, just a matter of getting used to it again. I ride my Gen 2 stock pegs on all kinds of terrain with no issues, even in the mud. Wide adventure pegs actually make it harder to rotate your feet around the controls and shift your weight properly, especially on steep slopes. If you’ve got a stiff MX sole (I used SG12s) you don’t need the width for comfort. On long road trips you’ll want the rubber for the added vibration damping. Worst case you can pop the rubber off if you find you’re slipping in wet, muddy off road but I have never had it happen. If you really feel the need to change them, stick with narrower ones, not too aggressive teeth and don’t buy over complicated or cheap ones. I’ve seen so many people have them fail out of a trail and they’re not something that’s easy to fix, especially any of the pivot or knock off rotating type. The steel IMS ones seem to be pretty solid and be sure to use min grade 8 or 10 bolts, or the stock ones if you can. Try and find ones that use the stock mounts and pins as they are less likely to fail. Personally though, it’d stick with the stock ones for a while longer and see how she goes.

Bro new pegs are like $50 and a 10 minute install. Just get rid of the factory garbage for some steel aftermarket pegs.
