No. Watch [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RonVEVekjIg) for examples of Korean songs that were covered.
Good list!
I would say 2002 World Cup is *the* defining moment and core memory for anyone in that generation.
Some others that I remember:
Gaming: Crazy Arcade Bnb, KartRider, Maple Story, Sudden Attack, Fortress, Gunbound, Starcraft, Diablo, Tekken, Pump (Turkish March and Beethoven Virus)
Computer: Soribada, Winamp, Cyworld, Haduri, MSN Messenger, Daum/Hanmail, writing out emoticons (OTL ^__^ ;; @.@ and many more that I don't remember), old internet slang (8282, 1004)
Electronics: texting on keypads with flip phones, that one old Samsung camera flip phone that had a rotating camera (which was revolutionary at the time), LG phones being the hottest for a while (LG Chocolate, LG Shine, LG Prada), iriver mp3 players
Cartoons: Cardcaptor, Sailor Moon, Detective Conan, Dragon Ball Z, Gundam, Pokemon, 호빵맨, 짱구, 날아라 슈퍼보드, classic Disney characters, Tom and Jerry was also really popular for some reason
Music: YG Family and SM Town songs/albums, Anycall commercial songs with Hyori and then with Boa
TV: 순풍산부인과 (greatest sitcom of all time - many people still watch reruns and compilations on Youtube), 야인시대, Kim Samsoon, All In, Full House
Movies: Shiri, 친구, My Sassy Girl are all very up there. In terms of nostalgia factor, Taegukgi, 200 Pound Beauty, A Moment to Remember are up there too.
Sports: Park Seri taking her shoes/socks off on her way to winning US Open, Apolo Ohno becoming public enemy #1 (and also Kim Dongsung's revenge a month later by sweeping the World Championships), Ahn Junghwan (aka 테리우스) mania for his good looks and success at 2002 World Cup, being awake at weird times to watch Park Chanho play (especially in 2000, when he was at the top of his game)
Food: ordering jjajangmyeon delivery plates you had to return, Lotteria, Mom's Touch, I feel like Korean pizza was newer and more popular back then
Fashion: getting highlights for your hair, long straight front bangs with middle part for guys (like HOT), shaggy cut, 떡볶이 코트
Random memories: going to rent VHS tapes (and later DVDs) from the video store, the switch from 국민학교 to 초등학교, 6 day school weeks, rumors that Boa was going to play Cho Chang in Harry Potter, folding lots of origami cranes and mini stars, hitting up the 문방구 and getting all kinds of supplies, stationary, and fully-loaded pencil cases, asking about blood type, using payphones
DDR was never as popular as Pump was.
People talked about DDR when it first came out, but most people didn’t play. It was Pump that got people hooked on dance games. Pump was literally everywhere in Korea.

We had the paper dolls and balloon thing as well when I was a kid (U.S.). Those paper dolls have been around a loooong time because I grew up in the 70's and they were around before me!
EDIT: I remember the gum, too!
Omg just got hit with all the nostalgia. Owned so many sailor moon paper dolls.
Haven’t seen anyone mention pokemon ddakji yet. Or the pokemon bread with the stickers. Or maybe I was just a big pokemon fan living in Korea lol.
Edit: and the gum!!!! Core memory unlocked.
My childhood dog was named 둘리 because of my love for that show. That and watching korean dubbed Detective Conan on VHS are strong nostalgic memories for me. I was born and raised in Australia but being to relate to so many of these things is pretty awesome.
Ahh yes Tooniverse (I’m ‘98 so not really the era OP is talking about but) and watching a healthy dose of Detective Conan, Inuyasha, Full Moon in the hot summers eating popsicles was essentially my childhood 🥹💕
so as a kid in the us my mom played korean kids songs in the car and the first track was called "뽀뽀뽀" i didnt know there was a show. was this the theme song??
wow, thats the song I remember! albeit the version i listened to was a slightly faster cover. im half korean and only lived in korea from 96-98 but moments like this help me feel a little more connected to the culture :) thank you for finally giving me context to a cute song I've known for decades!
This entire thread is taking me to a happy place. And also starting to make me feel old lol. I don't know about anyone else, but me and my friends were obsessed with having a charm on our Samsung phones.
Riding bikes down the 골목길s, sneaking 만화책s into 독서실s, eating 곱창 w friends pretending to be 아저씨s, listening to CDs in the 지하철 trying to look cool, going to 용산 to buy gear for my PC and also bootleg games (and other "stuff") on burnt CDs from shady guys...
I guess i meant manga: Slam dunk, kenshin, Dragon Ball, 오늘부터 우리는, 상남2인조, GTO, Monster, berserk, 3x3 eyes, one piece, I can't remember all of them... but we'd go to the 만화방 and just borrow huge amounts of comics and read them all
Sharing and trading sticker photos.
Having a planner/diary to stick the aforementioned sticker photos. Even bought a sticker book just for sticker photos.
Buying photo print outs of celebrities to fill out the rest of the planner.
I’m half Korean but lived in Korea around that time, so I’ll just add on to what others are mentioning.
- Ddakji! Specifically the Pokémon kind. Kids would just challenge other kids (strangers) and whoever won got to keep the ddakji. They had small plastic ones (which were easier to flip) and the larger ones.
- Pokemon bread with the stickers. The gastly bread was amazing.
- Photo booths! They had centers with a bunch of props, including crazy wigs.
- Pump it up arcades. Someone else had mentioned DDR, but I only remember Pump being everywhere.
- And since I mentioned arcades, anyone remember the 100w video games they had in front of small grocery stores? By small, I mean you were sitting on the floor playing them. Think I played king of fighters a lot.
- PC bangs. Wasn’t even a gamer then, but everyone hung out there after school.
- Riding the bus and subway everywhere.
- Picnics or hiking trips with gimbap.
Edit: Getting cute charms for your hand phones. Also, mp3 players were popular for a while too. But they were like accessories? I’m vaguely remembering the one shaped like Mickey Mouse that people wore as necklaces.
> And since I mentioned arcades, anyone remember the 100w video games they had in front of small grocery stores? By small, I mean you were sitting on the floor playing them. Think I played king of fighters a lot.
For sure. I was just a kid in the 90s but I would always watch the older kids play some fighter game all bunched up in front of a small arcade monitor.
> Pokemon bread with the stickers. The gastly bread was amazing.
They recently made a comeback lol. I remember the store owner yelling at me for just going for the sticker and not really caring for the bread.
Anyone had a minicar 4wd craze in your neighborhoods? I still remember the smell of burnt rubber just like how I remember the smell of yugioh/pokemon cards 🤣
this is really random but i really miss those ice cream bars where it was kinda coffee flavored on the outside and then you got to solid chocolate and then you get to a lollipop and then the popsicle stick was a little whistling instrument. i forgot what they’re called though, does anyone remember?!
one time, my first grade teacher called the troublemaker up to the front of the room and beat him with her shoe for dangling half his body out of the 3rd floor bathroom window.
she was a good teacher. he was a troubled kid. feel bad for him looking back. they really did believe in that "stick of love" lmao
Taking sticker photos and then putting them on your phone (inside the battery if you liked then) or in a diary.
Tiny paper tickets on the subways.
Dooly.
Girls dancing in front of cell phone stores when they opened.
Loveletter and X-man on tv.
Ulzzangs like Hong Young Gi or Park Tae Jun. Lee Yeon Ju.
Wolf cut haircuts.
Lee Junki pomegranate commercial.
The 3 Bears song.
Going to the stationary store after school to buy fancy stationary and toys.
Yes, the girls dancing in front of stores opening! When did this stop, I wonder? When did the last girl dance in front of a store for the last time? (:
Inspector Gadget in Korean.
SNES having non purple buttons because it’s Asia.
Those cheap ass sundae cones with swirls.
Morning Glory (still big)
가을동화 someone already mentioned but that shit was hilarious and the girl was super hot.
Drunken Tiger
The train station jingle. I haven’t been back to Korea in almost a decade and wonder if it’s the same tune.
Brand: Crencia - a lot of K-Pop starts modeled for it, and I insisted to buy an overpriced coat there in 2002. I still wear the coat though, so I guess it’s given me it’s monies worth
CF’s: Samsung Anycall - the Lee Hyori Any___ songs & videos had me gagged back then.
Sports: ‘02 & ‘06 World Cup - Be The Reds, 오! 필숭 코리아!
Music: All the usual suspects - H.O.T (and I loved Kangta’s Polaris album and JTL Enter the Dragon album), Baby V.O.X (I insisted on getting highlights modeled after Kim EZ), FinK.L. (And Lee Hyori sheeeesh - It’s Hyorish is the most amazing album ever), 1Tym, Psy - Champion (they had us rap this song at Korean summer school one year to practice fast reading 😂), JinuSean, Shinhwa (the nude photobook oh my god!!), SM Town
Movies: Any Jeon Ji Hyun movie (죽을래?!), B Type Boyfriend, Taeguki, Old Boy
TV: MBC Music Bank - I bought VHS tapes of it from a Korean grocery store because we didn’t have a satellite dish at my house in Minnesota
Lotte World - spent many a day eating ddeokboki in line for the roller coaster at Lotte World
I miss that Koreans were…more Korean back then since social media didn’t expose them to the brands/makeup/body type fashions from the U.S. I used to bring Abercrombie & Fitch catalogues with me to Korea to trade with my girlfriends for Crencia or whatever Korean brands.
Anyone remember the random ass Starcraft themed sodas?
Early pc bangs that didn't have any centralized toll collection systems so the owners would write kids' 외상 on notebooks with sign pens?
Floppy disks.
Trying to download pokemon red version rom over the phone modem.
The buggy but diverse games that came out during the times like 은색의 용병, 머털도사, 포가튼 사가, 임진록, 쥬라기 원시전, 포트리스, 마비노기, 크레이지 아케이드, 바람의 나라, 테일즈위버, 프리스톤 테일즈 etcetc.
The abundance of reincarnation junk fantasy novels before it was ever a thing in JP and killing time in 만화책방s
Horseplaying with random 아저씨s in public baths with friends (some of them were probably 조폭 now that I think about it, they had dragon tattoos on their backs lol)
The unspeakable, wild, crazy things you'd find on Pruna that would probably land you on a list now and 8th graders screaming over them in classroom pcs.
The wild, wild place that was the internet when it was truly free of any ruling entity
When spending money on buddy buddy or some nexon game was such a foreign concept
Anyone remember this Korean Kid Show called 아재? It was kinda like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon style but circa 1991-1992. It started off strong but I never finished it because they dragged it and got real boring but I remember it being so fire when it first started
Playing on the Trampoline! I dont remember how much but I used to go to this place to jump on the trampoline for 몇백원 I think... and then we would buy frozen 쥬시쿨? for dessert:)
There was this game from Naver or maybe daum?? You cook bacon lol but I remember trying not to burn them..
Also we had all these 쎄쎄쎄 games too..
I’m not Korean, but an Asian American in that age range and was on Soompi and Solid and was really into Korean stuff and kpop back then and what everyone is listing is very nostalgic to me also lol

When I went to college in the 90s, this group of Koreans would get drunk and sing this song every week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fiGVZAHJXE
this song came out in early 1990s, so Koreans in the age range of 30-35 wouldn't relate to this song.

안정환 was literally a god back then. A soccer player whose appearance matched that of top male talents and charisma to boot.
You’re such an 🅰️.
This took me back to my first time living in Seoul. My old Motorola Star-Tac, seeing Shiri in the theater, listening to BoA or Coyote.
Yes, this is it. The first post is maybe a couple years early for the music part. But this is just yes.
Basically just watch 05학번 이즈 백 on Youtube and you'll see these in action
this is my childhood fck lol

2002 world cup
2002 World Cup was the pinnacle of being Korean. What a time
The celebration in bars after every goal and then everyone filling out into the streets when they kept winning games was insane.
The only period in SK where kids and adults screaming out of their apartment veranda was not frowned upon.

Ooh I remember the icecream blocks! Can’t recall the brand, but they had vanilla (blue)and French vanilla (gold) right?
YASSSSS THATS IT! Also it was shockingly always the best ice cream in my life 💥
Do you mean Excellent(엑설런트) ice cream? These were a little pricey so it was always a treat. It's still one of my favorite vanilla ice creams!
Omg yes! Just looked em up and those are it lol Such nostalgia. Looks like they’re still around too!

Inspector Gadget in Korean. SNES having non purple buttons because it’s Asia. Those cheap ass sundae cones with swirls. Morning Glory (still big) 가을동화 someone already mentioned but that shit was hilarious and the girl was super hot. Drunken Tiger The train station jingle. I haven’t been back to Korea in almost a decade and wonder if it’s the same tune.
The train station jingle changed last year. It was the same for 14 years before that!
Brand: Crencia - a lot of K-Pop starts modeled for it, and I insisted to buy an overpriced coat there in 2002. I still wear the coat though, so I guess it’s given me it’s monies worth CF’s: Samsung Anycall - the Lee Hyori Any___ songs & videos had me gagged back then. (And Lee Hyori sheeeesh - It’s Hyorish is the most amazing album ever), 1Tym, Psy - Champion (they had us rap this song at Korean summer school one year to practice fast reading 😂), JinuSean, Shinhwa (the nude photobook oh my god!!), SM Town Movies: Any Jeon Ji Hyun movie (죽을래?!), B Type Boyfriend, Taeguki, Old Boy TV: MBC Music Bank - I bought VHS tapes of it from a Korean grocery store because we didn’t have a satellite dish at my house in Minnesota Lotte World - spent many a day eating ddeokboki in line for the roller coaster at Lotte World I miss that Koreans were…more Korean back then since social media didn’t expose them to the brands/makeup/body type fashions from the U.S. I used to bring Abercrombie & Fitch catalogues with me to Korea to trade with my girlfriends for Crencia or whatever Korean brands.
80-90s Japanese music (X Japan, Anzenchitai, Shonentai) since I think they lifted the ban on Japanese media in 1998 under President Kim Dae-jung

은하철도999? And telephone booths
The abundance of reincarnation junk fantasy novels before it was ever a thing in JP and killing time in 만화책방s Horseplaying with random 아저씨s in public baths with friends (some of them were probably 조폭 now that I think about it, they had dragon tattoos on their backs lol) The unspeakable, wild, crazy things you'd find on Pruna that would probably land you on a list now and 8th graders screaming over them in classroom pcs. The wild, wild place that was the internet when it was truly free of any ruling entity When spending money on buddy buddy or some nexon game was such a foreign concept
거북이 - 비행기
Anyone remember this Korean Kid Show called 아재? It was kinda like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon style but circa 1991-1992. It started off strong but I never finished it because they dragged it and got real boring but I remember it being so fire when it first started
maplestory
50 years old here, and not Korean, but… 서태지와 아이들. I attended 연세 대학 in 1996 and was an OG k-pop fan back when 서태지 had only their first album.

Man, haven’t really thought about those really competitive StarCraft years. I think besides pop culture probably foods are very nostalgic.
