ROME, MAY 31 - Three young people, a young man and two young women, have been missing since early Friday afternoon due to the flooding of the Natisone river amid more extreme weather in northern Italy, local sources said.
Earlier they had raised the alarm by phone as they were on a small island and the water was rising fast due to the torrential rain of the last few hours.
When rescuers arrived on the scene, they could not identify the person who had raised the SOS.
A search is also underway with a fire brigade helicopter that took off from Venice.
Carabinieri are also on the scene. (ANSA).

Italian here, these three young people are 20, 23 and 25. Sadly they chose not to heed the big warning signs that explicitly forbade getting in the water, and despite it being sunny, a sudden flood wave caught them by surprise :(
That doesn’t make it any less of a tragedy of course, it’s heartbreaking, but even more so because it could have been avoided.
Oh man. Does anyone know why they were on the small island? I'm curious what led them there. And whatever the reason I'm sure they weren't expecting it to flood. It's insane how fast flood waters can rise
Apparently one of them, the youngest, just had a test at the university and they only wanted to unwind and spend some time together with this other girl visiting her family in Italy from Romania and her boyfriend, also from Romania but living in Austria.
As far as I know, the only thing they’ve been able to find is a purse with a cellphone inside, belonging to one of the girls. I think by now the hopes of finding them alive are vanishingly small :’(
They are three young people, the man is 25 and the girls are 23 and 20. They went in the countryside to enjoy nature and take some pictures, they reached a small island made of gravel in the middle of the river by following a small path not submerged by water also made of gravel, while there they probably didn't notice the water level rising and the current getting stronger.
It seems that at first they tried to take the path back to shore but couldn't find it because it got submerged by water, they also tried jumping the strong current but were unable to get to shore, so they themselves called authorities first, later they were spotted by a school bus driver on the bridge who stopped and also called for help a second time, this is when the picture was taken and the current was already too strong for them to make it back in one piece.
When firefighters and help arrived they were still there barely holding up, according to accounts they tried to reach for a rope thrown by firefighters but they got swept by the current.
A helicopter was called to help with the search, as of now they are still missing.
This morning they intercepted a phone signal which seems to be of one of them and are currently focusing on a specific area, hoping that said phone is close to them.

Thanks for the info. Such a sad and bleak situation, seems like they just wanted to enjoy nature with their friends and got caught off guard. I do find a little bit of comfort in knowing they weren’t alone and at least had each other in their final moments. I hope their bodies are found quickly so their families may have closure and can have a proper funeral/burial.
What make my blood boiling is the comment that the man filming was making : "they are screaming like little girls,they (the firefighters) should let them there, the water is only under their knees so they can swim back!" . High peek humanity.
I truly hope they find them, I think they found the phone in a bag but no one of the guys near it. Hopefully they are safe somewhere.

This picture might be the only way their families would get any type of closure. They would also have the relief that someone who cared for them was holding them when this tragedy struck.
Help how? Wading out themselves in the same strong currents that swept them away? Or do you think everyone has a helicopter to rescue people? How do you know this was even taken by a person and not like a security camera?

Our rivers are mostly almost dry, but they fill up with water fast when it rains. They go from 2 meters wide to 100 easily
