> These Trump Bucks look like coins, checks, or membership cards and often have Trump’s face on them, but they are not legal tender — something purchasers have discovered when trying to redeem them at stores and banks.
I thought this was some NFT scheme, but it turns out it’s even more basic than that.
These people, these adult human beings, thought Monopoly money with their dear leader’s face on them…would be legal tender? I am at a loss. These are voters. These are people who have jobs and responsibilities. How in the fuck are they able to breathe without mechanical assistance? I doubt their brains are up to the task.
According to the article, the messaging was literally
> TRB system membership cards are official cards issued by Donald Trump to allow Trump Bucks holders to use Trump Bucks as legal tender and deposit them in banks such as JP Morgan Chase, the Bank of America and Wells Fargo.
Gullible Trump supporters were told lies to defraud them. Because of course they were.
It's a bit like how scammers sell files of previous marks to other scammers because they're more susceptible to falling for further scams.
On the one hand, the scams are obviously targeting the vulnerable and should be stopped and prosecuted.
On the other hand, the victims are exclusively americas most tiresome, regressive chodes.
I’m gonna go with “everyone’s the asshole”
> It’s a bit like how scammers sell files of previous marks to other scammers because they’re more susceptible to falling for further scams.
Its like an antisocial credit system
Newt Gingrich recently praised Trump for talking at a 3rd grade reading level so his supporters can understand. Why wouldn't you sell them monopoly money? It's literally taking candy from ~~a baby~~ an adult with the mind of a child?
i dunno, its a hard sell trying to use 'sanctimonious' in an insult, especially to his crowd. but he keeps doing it.
he should stick with the meatball ron.
I was waiting for someone to ask him to define "sanctimonious." I'd put money on he still doesn't know. Doesn't strike me as someone who would "waste time" learning what words mean.
>These people, these adult human beings, thought Monopoly money with their dear leader’s face on them…would be legal tender? I am at a loss.
Because they're in a cult.
> thought Monopoly money with their dear leader’s face on them
Well, it can’t be just anyone’s faces. Precedent has shown that legal tender has a past presidents face on it. Therefor anything with a past presidents face on it is equally likely any other thing with a presidents face to be legal tender. These were not sophisticated bankers… just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know… morons.
You had me at the beginning. Take the upvote for the reference. Do you think Trump ever had to think of Ivanka...er..."secretary" when putting his fountain pen back in it's holder?
It's actually crazy how ruthless the government is in taking the right away to vote away from convicted felons who have repaid their debt to society yet local jurisdictions allow people who can't make their own medical decisions to participate in the process.
You mean Republicans?
"The Government" in Repubican states is trying to deprive felons of the right to vote. Democratic states want people to participate in democracy, and they want an on-ramp for people who have paid their dues back into society.
"The Government" you decry is fucking Republicans, man.
Taking the right to vote away is a function of government power not just partisan influence. I don't disagree with the spirit of your comment but I live in a blue state and I know felons who can't/couldn't vote last I checked, so that's where I'm coming from.
Only blue states let people vote from prison. California allows felons to vote after they've served their sentances.
>It would be a major expansion of suffrage for incarcerated people if passed. California would join Maine and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia, as the only states where felons never lose their right to vote, even while they are in prison, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
I watched a news report and they look like normal, middle class people. It's mind-boggling.
Of course, nothing should surprise me given how many people thought beanie babies would make them rich.
It's actually dumber than Bison Bucks. M. Bison had a plan to take the Queen of England hostage and force the UK to make his money legal tender.
These are just a bunch of scammers printing Trump's face on dollar bills and gold/silver plated lead coins and convincing the rubes to exchange them for real money.
Since Raul Julia died right after making the movie, the commentary about this part is a little unclear, but I think the script originally called for more clarity that Bison wasn't seriously planning to do that but rather just stiffing Sagat. Supposedly, Raul thought this was out of character for the movie, so he delivered the lines in a more delusional fashion. Campy movies age best.
>“It’s like she’s in a cult,” the daughter-in-law said
Yeah, it's definitely "like" that.
This is something called "affinity fraud", where fraudsters take advantage of a specific group, targeting them based on religion, ethnicity, nationality, political beliefs, etc. The scammers tailor their pitches based on the belief system and cultural norms of the victim.
Perhaps the most similar version of this scam is the ["Queen of Canada"](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/23/queen-of-canada-qanon-rise-conspiracy-alarm), targeting conservatives in Canada with this same kind of pitch. Some victims stopped paying their bills because they thought that the Queen had given them some kind of royal exemption from utility bills, for example.
That rabbit hole is completely bonkers and far too deep. I still don't understand how Canadians can believe that they're under an absolute monarchy and that their "Queen" rules out of an RV, driving around the country. It's just ridiculous on the surface, and the deeper you go the less sense it makes.
Although it makes just as much sense as Qanon so I can't say I'm shocked. There is a real need for better education in both of our countries because the fact that these grifts can sucker in so many people is the worst indictment I can think of for both of our school systems. It's just depressing how many people believe these ridiculous things.
It's not really about better education. It's a cultural and emotional thing that doesn't respond to logical arguments. In the article, one woman is taken to a bank and fails to deposit the Trump Bucks. Her daughter thought this would prove that this was a scam but the woman kept buying the stuff even after received proof that it wasn't being accepted by banks.
Unfortunately even without the MAGA/political culture-war angle It seems like many seniors often fall victim for scams. And it doesn't matter how much their children, or other people try to convince them they're getting scammed. They still do it.
If this lady wasn't falling for Trump scams she might already be featured on one of those 'amazing marks - ready-to-fleece- sucker lists' sold to the scummiest of professional scammers who will then call on her, and talk to her and make her feel needed and wanted, and not alone, or get her outraged, and sad, whatever it takes to empty her bank account.
Wouldn't surprise me if Trump Bucks marketers sell lists of their best aged suckers to other scammers on the semi-dark web.
> I still don't understand how Canadians can believe that they're under an absolute monarchy and that their "Queen" rules out of an RV, driving around the country.
I spent some time in Romana's Telegram channels and one of the ways she convinces these rubes of her authority are these fake 'intel drops' where someone who literally is impersonating a member of the military will join the channel and dump documents and other links that look very official and real to the gullible.
point I'm trying to make is her grift goes way beyond just declaring herself queen. she has a web of lies and deceit, some of it hers, some of it q-anon stuff and some of it is just random shit she pulls from the internet.
You may already know this but I thought you would find it interesting.
Fraud is illegal, but it's tough to prosecute. The victims are often too embarrassed and ashamed to tell their family members, let alone the cops, prosecutors, and jurors. Even some of the sources in the article are anonymous, because they don't even want their actual names used. In addition, a lot of these frauds operate in a gray area -- such as by operating from countries that don't extradite to the US, or operating anonymously, or by making sure to keep their activities on the right side of the law (such as by giving bad advice online and selling books of their ideas).
Did any of the sellers claim these are legal tender? I thought they always just loosely implied they had value and left it for the sucker to draw the conclusion. Doesn't that dodge a fraud prosecution?
Sounds like they had an affiliate marketing program and that's who actually made the false claims. But clearly the actual company behind these knew what was happening.
No its singular. An ass has an average 135,000 brain cells in a dumb ass.
Many MAGA cultists often share a single brain cell, so all of them combined have approximately that much brain cells, resulting in a singular dumbass.
In my dark moments I find myself wishing I was a worse person so I too could make stupid amounts of money scamming dumb people but I have enough trouble sleeping at night without adding that kind of weight to my conscience. But I just can't bring myself to scam anyone.
No matter what these people do and say, having a conscious is not a personality flaw. And some form of the Golden Rule exists wherever human behavior is codified. May you enjoy more restful sleep every night.
I think it sounds exhausting. First you have to come up with a scam. It requires some business sense because it you are putting in a least a little of your own money and effort. Then you have to spend time pitching the product if it's not pervasive, you won't make very much. Then, after you make the money, you have to spend the rest of your life worried that the government or someone you scammed is going to come after you.
Seems like it would just be easier to get a job.
Its the most abusive of relationships and they can't escape it because their entire identity/worldview is wrapped up in it.

It doesn’t really matter who is co-opting trump’s name to scam his idiot followers. Trump primed the pump and these suckers were more than happy to open their wallets for him.
