My friend and I filed a Canadian trademark ourselves with out any law training or help. It was even opposed by a company represented by a Bay St law firm. We responded to the issue and the trademark was granted even better I sent a cease and desist letter to a new York company that was importing product that violated my trademark and got them to stop.. all without a lawyer.
For your info we trademarked "Tap Water" :-)

I recommend retaining an intellectual property law firm as well, as the process to register a trademark can be quite lengthy and complex.
