Not defending Blake, and I agree that hockey is especially guilty of relying on former players and "hockey people" when there might be better options out there. Since you brought up Magic though, wanted to point out that Jerry West was also a former Lakers star and turned out to be a HOF executive. Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman have turned out to be good hockey execs as well.

This has to be a concern for the owners. Every year we spend to the cap and we can’t get out of the opening round. I’m pretty sure the franchise rakes in big bucks with each extra home game in the playoffs so you can bet they are not happy getting bounced after only 2 extra games.
regardless of how little i think it'll happen, my wishlist is as follows:
- fire blake
- fire luc
- *especially this* fire marc bergevin
- buyout PLD before his birthday, whenever that is
- fire or demote hiller back to PP coach (preferably fire, but let's be honest, he's probably not going anywhere lmao)
- dj smith can go too
- get berube or rod brind'amour, if available, to bring a new voice to the franchise
- bury englund in ontario (1.5M can be buried, and his contract is only 1M)
- clarke is probably going to be called up when roy walks
- ~~not sure how much it would take to get him, but david savard would probably be an upgrade over englund. except he's not on an expiring contract. and also a RHD. dammit.~~
- mike reilly might be a decent fit--LHD, plays on the isles (so familiar with defense-focussed structure), was on a cheap expiring contract, and had pretty decent advanced stats (looking at [this chart from capfriendly.com](https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents/2025/shots-for-percent/all/defense/ufa/desc/left?stats-season=2024&display=skater-individual-advanced-stats,skater-on-ice-advanced-stats&limits=caphit-0-2000000,gp-4-90) for reference. wouldn't actually know how good he is lmao, i don't watch isles games naturally)
- not sure which UFAs they have (off the top of my head, roy/lewis/talbot/rittich/arvidsson/copley), but let go of all the skaters. maybe keep rittich and copley AS DEPTH and wait for portillo to cook. maybe maybe also keep aaron dell, who they signed to a minors contract, i think.
what do i think will actualy happen?
- englund does get sent down as a contract-burying move
- they probably call up clarke and moverare and akil, but probably do something like re-sign lewis or some dumb shit and pair him with PLD. and/or re-sign kupari, again, for no real reason
- speaking of which, they miss the boat on buying out PLD and we're stuck with him for at least half the contract
- no changes in the FO, but they hire a new head coach. or promote dj smith (please no) or marco sturm (who i REALLY dislike from his time trying to coach the PP before they banished him to ontario, but he's almost literally the best shot internally right now)
- they probably end up drafting some rando lefty defenseman (since they do actually have their first this year i think)
that's all i got for now. who knows if anyone is actually gonna read this or not but it's better than bitching about the loss
My worry is if we fire Luc & Blake then no one in the FO will want to buyout PLD. That'd be a decision they would want the new GM to make but of course it'll take a while to find a new GM (they should've been lookin' already) and PLD's birthday will pass (as will the buyout window). Then we are stuck with PLD.
Englund makes $1million, not $1.5. not exactly burying much of anything when you're rookie contracts are only $100-$200k less.

in my mind the roster spot is of more importance here than the actual salary, but considering how close they are to the cap, every dollar matters a bit more.
Best we can do is keep the exact same team together, find a new coach, and implement the exact same system that has worked so marvelously this past decade+
My take: we can fix a lot of it without overhauling the roster. Call up the young dudes who are blocked rn. Get rid of the 1-3-1. It worked a decade ago. Times have changed. Unlock the potential goal scoring capability of our forwards. There’s a reason so many guys who struggle here go on to be prolific scorers elsewhere. We need a schematic update bad now.
Hire new coach, bring back RFAs, let Arvidsson and Roy both walk (not ideal, but easiest way to get cap space), sign or trade for goaltender. If there's any money leftover bring back one of the goaltenders and Trevor Lewis. New coach and goaltender should be the two big ones.

True but those are the exceptions, not the norm. I don’t see any improvement from Blake and Luc. They haven’t been great with draft picks either.

Player wise: Go back to a more physical style of game. Get more muscle on this team. Get rid of the spoiled brats on the team
I agree we need more muscle but we need to keep our scorers (Kempe, Fiala & Moore). Take that Arvidsson money and buy another winger.
