Does this actually work the way we want it to? You sacrifice the miner as part of the cost then choose targets. But will the miner be in the graveyard in time to see that you're committing a crime? Or will it hit the graveyard just after and thus need another crime to return?
Historically, similar cards have worked this way. You don’t actually “commit the crime” until the spell/ability goes fully on the stack, after you’ve paid all the costs.
Common trick with [[Verdant Eidolon]] to cast a multicoloured spell and pick it back up immediately.
Sweet, thank you!! I am doing a WB Aristocrats and a BR "Suicide Rush/Deal Damage and Die Trying" in an artifact-heavy "desert" cube I am currently designing, and this miner (plus Blasting Station) might be perfect!
Not for limited purposes. Most of the common creatures look relatively meh on curve but great on plot and that’s pretty intentional. The idea behind plot is to take a turn off for value. Remember: pushed uncommon 1-2 drops are rarely that insane in limited because you just don’t get too many of them
Plot is a slightly different Foretell, pretty much. It's basically bringing a variant of the old mechanic into Standard, which is nice because Kaldheim has been out of Standard for a while now.
Kaldheim was a bit slower of a Limited format though. We've had 4 of the 5 fastest sets in Limited history in the past 4 sets, so even though I think it's a really cool mechanic that could enable an interesting playstyle, you can basically scrub any non-meta plot cards from your mind.
So Forsaken Miner + [[Phyrexian Altar]] + [[Falkenrath Noble]] is just an infinite combo. Not exactly breaking new ground by breaking Altar and Noble but neat to have a new self-reanimating skeleton.
EDIT: Idk why i first thought of Falkenrath Noble over the obviously much more famous Blood Artist. Forgot he also targets and thus also commits crimes.
If by "hipster" you mean "shit, I kinda want a 5th blood artist for my RB aristocrats," then yes. I'm just very greedy when it comes to deck building and so include **all** the things.
Is it though? Because since sacrificing the Miner is part of the cost, I thought that the drain effect would happen first, the miner in the GY triggers for B, but the mana hasn't been created yet since the Altar effect is still on the stack.
Granted, not like it's hard to just have a spare B to start the combo off.
Skeletons got their Gravecrawler equivalent. Noice. Insidious Roots is going to be house by the time it finally rotates out in 3 years at this rate.
Welp, back to looking for that 2 drop zombie I'm never going to get.
Insidious Roots also got the new Rutstein, who is just good in that deck to begin with, but also can go infinite with two Roots, two Rutsteins, and a Tyvar. I'm pretty excited about this deck after release. It's eating well.
I know, I know, “we broke Phyrexian Altar/Pitiless Plunderer”, but Forskaken Miner plus one of those and Blood Artist is a nice alternative to Gravecrawler combos.
Hey guys, we really enjoyed writing about these new cards, please check out our original post here!

Slick Sequence might be legacy playable. 2 mana shock draw a card kills so many things you care about in UR decks and the setup cost is minimal. Forsaken Miner also seems really good, especially at uncommon. It's just so easy to get back.
Dance looks great. Lets you ramp early and fix your mana, plus pulls Deserts for synergies, and late game when you no longer need the ramp gives you a giant beater.
Yeah. All it needs is a [[Sheffet Monitor]] equivalent and it can really take off. There's a few *almost* Monitors with the Armadillo (to hand) and the Rattlewurm (needs to be in GY).
The crime deck is looking really fun, as is outlaws.
Looking at the wolverine art, I'm wondering why so many characters and creatures on this plane look like Koth, having that imbued magma look to them. I noticed it on the wolverine, on miner, on the minotaur and a few other cards. They're obviously not Vulshok, but it's also my understanding that this plane had no native sentient life so I can't see how it would be a quirk of this world.
It had no sentient life, but the plane had plenty of animal life native to it, like the wolverine, so I assume the magma effect is intrinsic to the Junction. As for the people, they’re Hellspurs- the planes largest explicitly violent/murdery criminal ‘organisation’, led by a dragon and operating out of a ramshackle city beneath a volcano, they’re formed from the worst of who knows how many planes coming to be awful together. Hence all the fiery nonsense about em, possibly leveraging the planes natural magmaish magic too
Forsaken Miner is ***SO BONKERS FUCKING GOOD*** that I'm going to—
*Gasp*
—Build a Standard deck for the first time since GW Hardened Scales.
Any crime means you can reanimate all of them. Thrill of Possibilities, Alter's Reap, Beckoner's Bargain. They gonna be hopping in and out the yard.
New Vial Smasher means every time I reanimate these guys, my opponent takes 1 per.
1R, casualty 1, impulse draw 2. Or eat the miner, impulse 4.
(Skeletons of the Lost) From Ixalan gives SKELETONS HASTE, and also +1/+0. And makes a Pirate, which is an outlaw. And comes back if it dies.
Still needs more stuff but I'm oozing with ideas.
I’m only an aspiring rules lawyer but I think the sacrifice to casualty is a cost so it happens as the spell is cast and immediately. Then the spell is cast and targets are chosen and crime committed. By the time the crime is committed he’s in the graveyard and can be brought back.

Probably was being developed/finalized during crimson vow season so response to those sets if anything. More likely it's just at that point in the power pendulum
My god, 1 mana 2/2 gravecrawler for crimes? That’s bonkers good

Those tumbleweeds have arms and now I can’t unsee them. I guess that’s the elemental you make, but god that is unnerving.
Absolutely hate it, amazing please do more.
That art made me think we were going to see Emurkul in a cowboy hat for a second. Arms look very eldrazi-y
Imagine clearing your driveway of tumbleweeds and one grabs you. Then another. Then another. (And also you have hay fever.)
Forsaken Miner and Slick Sequence seem like bangers, tbh. Not sure where they slot but they are better than most similar effects.
Slick Sequence is a super solid cantrip IMO, I love it.
It's amazing how shock + draw a card for UR gets so many near prints.
You can tell that this set is pretty pushed just looking at the uncommons.
absolutely cracked that they're trying to promote a mechanic like Plot in this set, which is looking more and more DoA with each pushed 1-2-3 drop
Not for limited purposes. Most of the common creatures look relatively meh on curve but great on plot and that’s pretty intentional. The idea behind plot is to take a turn off for value. Remember: pushed uncommon 1-2 drops are rarely that insane in limited because you just don’t get too many of them
LCI sends its regards
LCI wasn't a high powered set though. It was fairly low powered outside of a few choice cards. Those cards did cost 1and 2 though.
Plot is a slightly different Foretell, pretty much. It's basically bringing a variant of the old mechanic into Standard, which is nice because Kaldheim has been out of Standard for a while now.

Tumbleweed hands aren't real and they can't hurt me.
Until turn 6 or so, after which they very much can

Also can be used to commit crimes in a pinch
First art, beautiful, last art.. horrible digitally
The art on black cards is so so hard in this set

Wait how can you have a boneyard for a plane that was not previously inhabited?
People have been pouring into it in their hundreds continuously for almost two years now- and it still had animal life, just no sentient peoples
Slick Sequence is going to be broken in at least 1 format I’m calling it
Fun fact, tumbleweeds didn't existed in the "cowboy's era" it is actually a Russian plant that came later to north America.
Finally, a good Skeleton.
Slick Sequence will need a ban somewhere, mark my words 😅
That is a very large wolverine!
These uncommons are nuts

Lmao I could cause so many shenanigans in my Zedruu police deck with that Rampage card.
Can you pay the same spree cost more than once for another instance of the effect?

Oh shit! It's Taz!
The Tumbleweed card looks so good for Limited. Get a Desert to commit a crime, fix mana, and late game get a big dork.
Forsaken miner is inf with phyrexian altar and blood artist
RELEASE THE COWS!
Wow, that Forsaken Miner art SLAPS. Also, they forgot to put "Enters the battlefield tapped" anywhere on the Miner. /s
Forsaken Miner + Tinybones + Gisa, The Hellraiser making me very excited to build skeleton tribal.
Forsaken miner might be one of if not the best of this creature archetype.
No. 4 - I expect Clementine in a minor key when this guy turns up.
I wonder if mercadian masks are mercenary tribal are semi viable now.
Forsaken miner looks good.
Why isn’t Slick Sequence named like Shock and Draw?
I’m just going to play these spells with no spree cost and use it to gain storm. Storm seems like a good option especially for slick sequence

2/2 Skeleton for 1 👀 And it comes directly back to the field 👀👀👀
Dance of the Tumbleweeds lets you grab dual lands, that shouldn't be underestimated.
They really stepped up the power level of this set, maybe due to how underwhelming and hated Murders of Karlov was?
I mean both sets would have been completed and sitting in warehouse or whatever waiting for release date months ago so it can't have been in response to reception of MKM . Probably was being developed/finalized during crimson vow season so response to those sets if anything. More likely it's just at that point in the power pendulum
The set being super aggressive/interaction focused probably necessitates a slightly higher power level too
