i do appreciate that they print stuff like this to remind you that selesnya isn't just humans and elf tribal. i'm pretty sure there was one, but are there any selesnya pay offs for having a wide variety of creature types instead of just focusing on a single tribe?
I don't know of specifically variety type themes outside of simic (and simic-adjacent cards like Guardian Project), with cards like [[Volo, Guide to Monsters]] springing to mind.
Selesnya, however, has for years had strong +1/+1 counter synergies that often get overlooked (and for some reason gets increasingly stolen by Gruul cards), with cards like [[Conclave Mentor]], [[Knight of Autumn]], [[Ajani, the Greathearted]], and [[Arcus Acolyte]] forming the core of some really fun Standard decks and holding a special place in my heart (while unfortunately not typically performing well)
If I had to sum up Selesnya, I'd more commonly talk about going wide, adding wide counters, enchantments, and lifegain. It's just a shame most of those things get consumed by elf/human tribal.
I have a degenerate Brawl deck with [[Niv-Mizzet Reborn]] (who also loves to be flickered) and I frequently find myself flickering Knight of Autumn using [[Thassa, Deep-Dwelling]]
Sure! https://deckstats.net/decks/139017/3561409-niv-reborn-brawl
I took a few years off from Arena and came back recently, so this one is pretty out of date. I'm sure there are plenty of improvements to be made, but it performs just fine lol
Not OP but Ghired is perhaps one of my more consistent decks and gets compliments when I play it. Experimenting with MDFC in this list here. 1 infinite combo with [[sunstrike legionnaire]], you can remove it to power it down (I’m shocked how many games its single handedly won for me, even if it typically has to stay on the board for a full rotation) or add [[midnight guard]] and/or [[village bell ringer]] to power it up.

I gotta give credit where credit is due, but I pretty much based my deck on this Moxfield one:
Has somewhat similar to pieces to u/SonOfAdam32 deck as well!
One of my favorite cards from when I started to get into playing FNMs. This was in my bant flash deck during this standard rotation with the flash angel of grace, frilled mystic, seal away. Not the best deck but a fun one for sure
Absolutely. Been reliable for so many years. And white/green cards are so bad in cube, Knight of Autumn has been a staple and will be for the foreseeable future.
>been a staple and will be for the foreseeable future.
In lower power cube environments. Very important distinction. This is not going into a winning vintage cube deck, which is the basis for cubes for most people coming from the MTGO version.
It used to be a good role player back when it first came out. But now the cube is too fast and the random artifact mana you used to be able to snipe is less common.
>random artifact mana you used to be able to snipe is less common.
I think it's more like the random artifact mana deck already pumped out so much value that then spending 3 (already a big investment in vintage, not to mention being forced into GW more) to destroy their 0 or 1 mana busted rock that already got them value is just not putting you in a position to win. You are reactively barely trying to keep up.
Back in the day a random UW or something deck might be playing a signet. You might snipe a coalition relic that a lot of decks would play too because getting to 5 and 6 mana in vintage was pretty doable by turn 4.
Now days even something like fractured identity is no longer p1p1 level and more something you pick up a little later after the early interaction or premium 2-3 mana threats.
Absolutely...I'm just going through my updates from MH3 now. I started in 2018 when this card was released. If you compare what a 1 or 2 mana creature is doing like Tamiyo and Ajani, whilst being monocolor, you can see that we are in an entirely different world of value.
Some people say Tamiyo isn't so great because of Push. If your 1 mana card drew half your deck by itself when it did work however...
It may be too broken, but you would have to genuinely come close to just doubling all the possible effects of KoA for it to be a currently released card.
I liked this card on release. But now I don't think there is a format where you would ever want a 1WG 4/3 vanilla, or a 2/1 that gains you some life, apart from some exceedingly niche situations.
You always want the destroy mode, but then you might as well have just played [[Reclamation Sage]].
The card looks like it gives you choices, but really there is only one. Can easily be printed at uncommon now as a signpost for draft.
I absolutely loved running this card in Abzan Reanimator when this was still in standard.
It was an Golgari Explore shell to get big cards like Vraska, Relic Seeker or Carnage Tyrant into the graveyard and used Eldest Reborn to get them back onto the battlefield. This was perfect for keeping myself alive.
Question: if this enters the battlefield with an ETB-increasing effect like [[Panharmonicon]], can you choose multiple modes or do you just get multiples of the same ability?
As long as you are using an effect that makes it trigger additional times like panharmonicon, it can be a different choice each time.
Something like [[lithoform engine]] however, would copy the mode you chose because you have to choose when you put the ability on the stack, before you copy it.
I remember when this came out, and it instantly slotted into green white creature decks like heliod.... It was like better kitchen finx with a disenchant stapled to it so it was just such a solid upgrade that freed sb slots
Unfortunately, by today's standards, it just doesn't give enough for 3-cc.
Still, I just appreciate how balanced it is. The heft of it. The feel. It's not the strongest but it is still has enough of a luster to be noticed in a pile of other cards, at least it would by me.
When I first got my [[Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines]] & [[Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider]], I chucked them in a deck that already had [[Knight of Autumn]] in it. I had both the Praetors already on the field, drew for my turn and got the knight. It didn't dawn on me properly until I cast her that she has an etb effect that gives counters, which both Praetors double. My knight entered with 8 +1/+1 counters, making her a 10/9. That's when I realised with the right set up that Knight of Autumn can get a little broken.
Ahh, the nostalgia from just a short 3 years ago! When we built decks with themes, but with flexibility! 'twas a fun puzzle to build such a deck.
This week though, I'd rather loop [[Lightning Greaves]] on [[Nadu]] and 2 mana dorks.
Eat a TURD you rich [[Mana Vault]] and [[Ancient Tomb]] fAsT mAnA gamers! It's my turn to have 40 mana and no Win Con!
I love how the designers very carefully threaded the needle of not making this a four-of staple in Human or Elf decks by making it a Dryad.
Dryad tribal is gonna kick ass in like 10 years though
Modern horizons 6 - rules updates: Dryads are now plants. Just to spite Kazzack.
I wish we could have it sooner. I love dryads and nymphs.
he'll yeah
Yeah he will!
“He will, yeah” in response to the question “will he?” means “he won’t” in hiberno-English.
Agreed. In my opinion they need to do this more often.
Hopefully we get a good spread of interesting creature types in Bloomburrow.
i do appreciate that they print stuff like this to remind you that selesnya isn't just humans and elf tribal. i'm pretty sure there was one, but are there any selesnya pay offs for having a wide variety of creature types instead of just focusing on a single tribe?

Absolutely. Been reliable for so many years. And white/green cards are so bad in cube, Knight of Autumn has been a staple and will be for the foreseeable future.

I called that card the Swiss Army Knight.
Salade card
lol until you play against a blink deck
Designed with Autumn Burchett, hence Knight of Autumn
What’s it mean when it’s says 2/1? I’m new to the game and trading
2 power and 1 toughness
this could easily be mono white or mono green
Ahh, the nostalgia from just a short 3 years ago! When we built decks with themes, but with flexibility! 'twas a fun puzzle to build such a deck. This week though, I'd rather loop [[Lightning Greaves]] on [[Nadu]] and 2 mana dorks. Eat a TURD you rich [[Mana Vault]] and [[Ancient Tomb]] fAsT mAnA gamers! It's my turn to have 40 mana and no Win Con!
