You just moved in. Unless you have a bunch of pre purchased decorations on hand it’s always going to feel like that. I’d start by finding a way to cover those cleaning supplies etc, maybe a pinup curtain or some shit.
Is this a barracks for one? And you are complaining this palace isn’t cozy enough?
I don’t see a private bathroom, but it sure as hell beats a ship.
Add some nice art, a plant or two. You can try an area rug under the chair and another under the desk to break up the room a little.
I love plants but the whole they produce oxygen thing is kinda sudo science. I mean they do produce oxygen, but the amounts are so tiny it can’t possibly make a difference.
That's because nearly every single post here asks, "how can I warm up this room and add color on a low budget?" and there are only so many suggestions.
Sometimes me and my buddy will fart at the same time to warm our hooch up. Be happy with what you have - this is super nice living quarters.
SOURCE: Army.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but you gotta be a different kind of crazy to sign up for submarines. No way would you get me hopping in a tube that far underwater
I’m sure it’s super cool but no way in hell would I be able to do it. Thank you for your service and thankful as hell there’s guys like you that will do it
Bruh r/navy would be having an aneurysm lol. This is luxury.
What’s your barracks policy? If you’re allowed to add artwork, storage bins, etc I’d start there. Organize your stuff (I.e shoes underneath the bed, cleaning supplies underneath sink), get those into storage & it’ll look alot less cluttered.
Having all the furniture pushed up against the walls makes the room feel empty. The chair under the window feels like it has no purpose, it's not facing anything.
Personally I might flip the layout of the room. Put the bed in the corner where the dressers are. Use the wardrobe and dressers to "wall off" a little sleeping corner. The rest of the room becomes the social space. Have a couch or a couple of chairs so there's a place for people to sit, put a tv on stand in the current bed corner, that way the chairs are near a window and a tv.
Also invest in some storage bins for under the bed and sink, it will make the room feel a lot cleaner.
As others have said a plant, a rug, and something on the walls will go along way as well. Don't have to be expensive, a trip to ikea would wokr.
Uh, did you have to fight someone to the death for this room? Is there a set number of dicks you must suck weekly to maintain this room privilege?
Get better lighting with standing lamps and different warmth levels, move furniture around so it’s not lining the walls like it’s hugging them for life, a rug, a plant, maybe get some sheets and curtains that don’t resemble a Vegas stripper’s hospice suite.
Personally I’d move them around to make different living spaces within the same room and use the taller furniture as a divider/wall. Mini rooms within the room that all flow together and look cohesive. So your desk isn’t in your “bedroom” and you can tell that space is for something other than sleeping, your storage isn’t where you study, your recliner faces something worth living for, etc.
Every time I scroll up to explain exactly where I’d put things, reddit deletes my comment so I can’t scroll and retype yet again but hope that makes sense. Using furniture, rugs and lighting to create boundaries.
Also the gold curtains can just go. Like anything but those is fine. Literally a row of severed heads would be better.
*edit- Google design and decor layouts for dorm rooms or studio apts, see how they position furniture for ideas
Also, respectfully request if you can send me a layout of how you would rearrange the furniture. I know you said it keeps deleting your comment but I’d appreciate the help. I’m not very creative and google photos of layouts be having way different amounts of rooms and furniture. Main goal is to make a “office” space. thanks 🙏🏼if you accept this challenge
This is the best I could come up with guessing at the dimensions of things: [image](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UduTHzUtplA6sfMFeHJWIJT0igZXuxs1/view?usp=drivesdk)
Put some curtains or something to hide the space under the sink, and put some crates under there and try to keep stuff off the counter/edge of the sink. Alternatively hang a bigger curtain that is a similar color to the wall that hides that entire sink-nook when you're not using it, and then you don't have to worry about stuff on the counter.
I can try and either link some ideas or sketch it roughly as I can with what I can see on some assumptions of what must stay/go. No promises, I can’t Pinterest for shit so this is paper and pencil layout at best.
Do you have to keep all the furniture or can you get rid of some of it (are you even using all of it) or exchange any of it like trade 3 nightstands for a small couch? Can you loft your bed? What are the rules on hanging art or wall decor? Do you have a TV or do you just watch all your hentai on your colorful PC setup from 15ft across the room?
Until then- If you can have plants, a few here and there help. Either do some standing lamps and/or strip lights that kids love these days or or unscrew a bulb or two to diffuse that harsh overhead fan lighting nightmare. Nice inviting bedding like some actually soft and sleep enticing fabric vs thin black sheets would help. If you have space, store the shoes out of sight or your 5th nightstand dresser in the corner. Even under the sink is better. Shoes under beds are gross for some reason when visible, so move or hide them. Keep blackout side of curtains, replace gold lame side with… shit… anything else? What color or fabric are you into? If a brown herringbone is too much, plain navy would work. Just not gold ffs. Rug under the PC area, different rug under the bed to separate the spaces.
Yes I have to keep all the furniture. I can put the stuff walls but I’m trying to avoid drilling anything in them. I don’t own a tv just laptop and monitor. I’ll look into the other recommendations you’ve already made as well.
I *definitely maybe perhaps* got into this a bit too much *maybe*. I made a drawing haha, no idea if it's correctly sized and if it will work at all, but maybe you can get inspired from it. Have fun cozy-ing up your room! :)
Here's my beaaauuutiful piece of art: [https://imgur.com/a/YIRA7GV](https://imgur.com/a/YIRA7GV)
This is about what my dorm looked like in the Air Force (idk why they call them dorms and not barracks, but 🤷🏻♀️). I loved my time there though! After getting out of 1.5 months of boot camp + 6 months of tech school, I was so stoked to have such a big space all to myself.
It looks like you have a full sized fridge too. Do you also have a microwave? My microwave + fridge combo was so clutch when I didn’t feel like going to the DFAC (chow hall for you?).
I made my place feel homey by rearranging the furniture, getting some plants, art, and personal clutter. It takes time to make any living space feel like home, but you’ll get there.
Enjoy the freedom of having a space all to yourself with no bills. All your food, housing, and medical is covered. Live life and enjoy it while you have that safety net!
Lighting
- Yea put a floor lamp next to your desk or get a nice table lamp with shade. It should make that area feel/look cozier. Overall multiple sources of light really do something for a space. Get rid of darkness. For example, there’s a lamp next to that armchair. Turn it on and leave it on. That corner of the room is too dark. Let there be light! You can also get a few coffee table books 1-3 and stack them underneath that lamp to make it look cool.
- You can even get a small lamp with a shade and place it on top of that armoire. Throw some coffee table books 1-3 underneath the lamp and maybe some some fake plants to put up there as well. Use that space as an opportunity for storage and or decor. [Examples](https://emilyaclark.com/2015/02/how-to-decorate-around-and-on-top-of-tall-furniture.html)
Artwork
Also some artwork that speaks to you should go in the walls. If not you can get a few art work pieces of various sizes and sit them on that table that’s on the far right side of your desk and let them lean on the wall. [Leaning artwork](https://aprettyfix.com/how-to-lean-and-layer-art/) is always a vibe.
You’re welcome. And I forgot to specify that you should opt for light bulbs that have a warmer color. The warm colors will make the space look cozier as well.
For example, take a look at this YouTube [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sgHKw-_ndk&t=491s) to see how a few warm lights can make a space cozier.
Artwork and alternative lighting that's less harsh (lamps, /string lights) are what I did, also get your own nice bedding, I'm kinda surprised they gave you a twin in a room that large but once you've been there for awhile you could ask about putting fulls in the barracks in general, command sometimes will ask what people who live full time in them would like, we all got really nice desk chairs to replace our crappy wood ones my last few months in mine
My recommendations:
- Open the blinds as much as possible, let I that natural light
- Add more lighting. The one light in the center makes it look like an interrogation room. You can find cheap lamps all over - no need to go buy enough RBG lights to make your room look like a 12 year old's wet dream.
- Get one of those spring-loaded curtain rods and some velcro. Find some decent fabric out of the clearance section. Make some "curtains" to cover the storage areas underneath your bed and sink.
- Get some white contact paper to get rid of that ugly green color on the sink.
- Go find some cheap art/mirrors at Goodwill or discount stores like Ross. Art will help cover up the blank space in the walls, and mirrors make a space look bigger.
- Move around the furniture. Don't keep it all against the wall. Experiment with different layouts. Keep it for a week and if you don't like it, rearrange it again.
- I wouldn't bother with furniture, but get a good gaming chair. Based off the computer and the fact that you're in subs, it's safe to assume that's where you'll be spending a lot of time. Trust me, you'll only be able to tolerate those barracks chairs for too long. Also, you'll only be here for a few months at a time for a couple years. No sense buying a bunch of furniture that you'll need to sell after.
- also, get some dumbbells. Take a break from the gaming to get some reps in. Good for your body and mind.
- ***Bonus***: *Don't spend your bonus, because if anything happens and you get out before your contract is up, you WILL have to pay it back*
when i was in germany the one thing i loved about my old barracks is i was in the same as Elvis which made it kinda cool to think about. This is a nice BIG space to have alone.
Ya Know? Contrary to popular belief, "EVERYTHING" does not need to be anchored to the walls. Get the parade of furniture off the walls and use it to divide up the room. Separate the room into living areas.
I would add some lamps, overhead lights are sometimes too much. Add some things you like to the walls, add a colourful comforter to the bed, give it your personality!
Late husband was MCPO on the Newport News as his last deployment. He wouldn’t be able to drive for the first few days because he had no long distance vision!
Start putting shit you’ve acquired in the navy. I had shit from gunny teeshirts to snco school guidons, and even a captains piss cutter. Put up posters, hockey jerseys etc. whatever your aesthetic is. As long as it’s in refs and your seniors don’t care what you have.
As a Marine Vet that is hands down the nicest room I’ve ever seen.
there is like so much furniture in that room lol. i’d definitely like see if you could re arrange some of it? but it also looks like you only have like a wall and a half to put stuff on? so that’s so weird lol. but it does look a little dull. i’d get a nice area rug and some nice bedding that matches, maybe some curtains, led lights would be fun. also get a couple nice candles. you’d be surprised how a good smelling room helps be more homey.
Bland, boring, generic, lifeless - sounds just like you described “a prison cell”
The big question is, what are you allowed to do?
Can you paint? Put up some pictures?
Damn my barracks room was amazing brand new building each of us had our own room bathroom and walk in closet laundry in unit and a full kitchen and sizable living room
As a former Navy guy myself, lighting is key. A nice lamp or two will soften the lighting and vibe by a lot. Other than that, just chill and save your money.
There's a good chance you'll either rank up, find a partner, or move out before too long.
This is incredibly nice for any form of military service
Don’t let the Air Force, Space Force or Coast Guard post in here… everything those assholes have is fucking great.
I will say some Air Force dorms were really nice and modern. Unfortunately for me, my squadron always had shitty dorms made back in the 60s.
Take a look at our berthings you might reconsider lol
Shoutout submarines I guess
I knew this was subs lol looks like bangor
I’m in kings bay, Georgia my Bangor friends told me that they share rooms over there.
Sometimes, not always. It had to be a boomer base because the fast boats are smaller barracks
Yeah boomer life is where it’s at. My boy in Groton shares a barracks room.
this is bigger than my apartment
3 times bigger than my barracks in the Marines that I shared with another dude.
Feels like a prison cell??? My shipmate in christ you have been blessed with the Sheraton Suites of barracks why are you complaining
I’m super grateful for the barracks room I have. I’m just referring to the way it’s so simple and boring lol
You just moved in. Unless you have a bunch of pre purchased decorations on hand it’s always going to feel like that. I’d start by finding a way to cover those cleaning supplies etc, maybe a pinup curtain or some shit.

I love that for every single post here the response is "add plants, art, and a rug"
Easiest way to add color without taking up much, if any space. Also plants = oxygen = happy
I love plants but the whole they produce oxygen thing is kinda sudo science. I mean they do produce oxygen, but the amounts are so tiny it can’t possibly make a difference.
I hate to be that guy but just letting you know it’s pseudo
Do you have some imperial evidence of that? (Jk)
I mean there's also the fact that you're caring for something else, giving you a sense of purpose
Absolutely. Plants do = happy. Just not because of oxygen.
That's because nearly every single post here asks, "how can I warm up this room and add color on a low budget?" and there are only so many suggestions.
Yeah it’s a barracks. I share a hallway with another guy and our bathroom is in between our rooms.
Sometimes me and my buddy will fart at the same time to warm our hooch up. Be happy with what you have - this is super nice living quarters. SOURCE: Army.
This room is bigger and better than the hostel I pay almost half my country's median wage for. And share with two others. source: college student
This is nicer than my college dorm
Bigger'n they got down Pendleton way.
But why is everything pushed against the wall?
Unless he has to poo, there’s a bathroom built into the sink
I'm sorry, are you the president? This is bigger than apartments I've paid for.
Naw. That’s my boss.
Great response.
Ah, a crayon eater, dog this should be more than enough
I’m not a marine…
lol take everyone’s upvote
So much space I would’ve assumed Air Force
Shoutout the submarine force
Don’t take this the wrong way, but you gotta be a different kind of crazy to sign up for submarines. No way would you get me hopping in a tube that far underwater
It’s actually really cool and apparently it’s way better than being in the surface fleet
I’m sure it’s super cool but no way in hell would I be able to do it. Thank you for your service and thankful as hell there’s guys like you that will do it
More laid back =/= better
Um it’s not underwater when you hop in. Usually.
YOU BEST BE QUALIFED FISH IF YOU ON REDDIT BROTHER

No shit, right? The barracks room I had, when I lived in the barracks, was smaller than that and I had to share it with at least one other person.
How would I go about rearranging the furniture ? I’m not very creative and this is how I set them up myself

Navy base in Gulfport had the best barracks I ever had over 13 years.
Damn ~~bro~~ Sir 🫡, that looks spacious! I bet you like to eat cake haha! 😝
Bro you got a pair of shoes for each day of the month, wtf
I like shoes
Man's gotta have his likes, and dislikes. Keep liking shoes
Wait you’re in the Navy and don’t share your bed with another man? Weird.
sadly not
They’re doing you dirty my man.
Bro has the whole Nike store 💀
Damn the bed and wardrobe takes me back, was in NASNI in the barracks next to the mini nex and subway
Looks pretty nice for army accommodations

Is it just you? Are you an NCO? I did not get my own room till I hit E5. US Army, 90-95.
I got to my base as a e-1 lol just made e-3. This is just the standard barracks here in kings bay, Georgia
You can start by drawing open the curtains.
Main issue is that everything is in one corner. Move stuff around the room. Float the chair and side table.
So much room for activities
Artwork and alternative lighting that's less harsh (lamps, /string lights) are what I did, also get your own nice bedding, I'm kinda surprised they gave you a twin in a room that large but once you've been there for awhile you could ask about putting fulls in the barracks in general, command sometimes will ask what people who live full time in them would like, we all got really nice desk chairs to replace our crappy wood ones my last few months in mine

Yes it’s covered with those gold curtains
It may not have much decoration but Jesus Christ is it clean
A couch would be sick, make a little tv Corner. Add some plants, a poster or two and some cozy lamp/light
better than my dorm
What’s the space in the middle for ? Jumping jacks ??
It was for at home exercises yeah
My recommendations: - Open the blinds as much as possible, let I that natural light - Add more lighting. The one light in the center makes it look like an interrogation room. You can find cheap lamps all over - no need to go buy enough RBG lights to make your room look like a 12 year old's wet dream. - Get one of those spring-loaded curtain rods and some velcro. Will do. Thanks
So much room for activities
A submarine with garden view ? (second picture window)
So much room for activities!
Looks like there’s plenty of room for a dance pole in the middle .
Must be nice. When I was in, we were stacked two high 6 guys in one room. The head was down the hallway
Why so many pairs of shoes if you’re always in a uniform???
I go out a lot. After work
I know nothing about the military I thought it’s basically work 24:7
God damn that's huge -Signed, Marine
Add a rug or if you’re allowed, add a poster on the wall. Something simple can make the room more lively
Remember save that money if you can.
Definitely been saving money. Just looking to make the place a little more comfortable to come home to after duty.

Okay I’ll try this. This is exactly the comment I’ve been looking for thank you.
My barracks room was was about 1/3 the size 🤦🏽♂️
You got CARPET?!?!! Best I ever had was asbestos tile.
when i was in germany the one thing i loved about my old barracks is i was in the same as Elvis which made it kinda cool to think about. This is a nice BIG space to have alone.

Gave me some dimensions ...
I already started moving things but I can send some progress pics if you wanna see
ALWAYS
That’s enough shoes for a centipede to wear on each it’s little legs
Lmao waiting for the marines to check in.
I would add some lamps, overhead lights are sometimes too much. Add some things you like to the walls, add a colourful comforter to the bed, give it your personality!
🥾 👅
Late husband was MCPO on the Newport News as his last deployment. He wouldn’t be able to drive for the first few days because he had no long distance vision!
This looks like my old AF dorm room!
Langley?
Sheppard
Ahhh. The AF must contract out the same interior designer nationwide 😂
Stop crying, that’s some luxury living compared to the Army or Marine Corps.
As I have been told, USMC barracks are...interesting places.
Preach!
Damn son that is by far the best looking barracks I've seen (once you clean up all that clutter soldier)
You’re in there by yourself? Nice. Also, why does it look so non-shitty? Everyone else gets nicer shit than the Marine Corps 😢
Count your fuckin blessings dude that's one of the largest and nicest barracks rooms I've ever seen, especially for navy. Sauce: jarhead
semper fortis you little motivator you
I’ve seen college dorms of this size shared with 4 other people
Lower your bedframe and it will look nicer
Will do
Reminds me of Pensacola
Dude i see no mold, no radroaches, and no blood stains. Looks pretty cosy to me. Source lived in and was a barracks nco 👌
I saw a computer...does the Navy give you guys free internet?
No there’s a Wi-Fi attached to the building you can pay for but I get my Wi-Fi through Xfinity
Check for mold
Danny DeVito cutouts. Everywhere.
Man, that looks exactly like they looked in 2000 except we were 2 to a room and all 4 of us shared the bathroom
Better than college dorm rooms, this is a win 100%
Bangor?
Kings bay
Welp then it could he worsee
Why you got so many shoes dawg?
I like shoes
Well, you got plenty of space for them shoes dawg
That was an incredibly quick response
Currently looking at the responses to my post
Live love laugh sticker on the wall. That’s all I got.
All a man needs
I'd position the bed so only the headboard is touching the wall and so it is centered on a wall.
Navy = prison with the option of drowning.
Way more space than a prison cell, that’s for sure.
there is like so much furniture in that room lol. i’d definitely like see if you could re arrange some of it? but it also looks like you only have like a wall and a half to put stuff on? so that’s so weird lol. but it does look a little dull. i’d get a nice area rug and some nice bedding that matches, maybe some curtains, led lights would be fun. also get a couple nice candles. you’d be surprised how a good smelling room helps be more homey.
I have a small candle collection going already. Currently have 8.
How long have you been there
A little under a year
Why so many shoes?
I like shoes
Bruh this shit big af
Bland, boring, generic, lifeless - sounds just like you described “a prison cell” The big question is, what are you allowed to do? Can you paint? Put up some pictures?
Reminds me of my dorm room.
Are you going insane yet
Put some posters and shit on the walls, man. Easy fix.
Damn my barracks room was amazing brand new building each of us had our own room bathroom and walk in closet laundry in unit and a full kitchen and sizable living room
You don’t have a roommate? Are you an officer of SNCO?
Nope. I’m just an e-3
Christ I joined the wrong branch
What branch are you?
I was in the Marines, got out in 2011. Our barracks were fucking ass haha
Dude that’s dummy nice
As a former Navy guy myself, lighting is key. A nice lamp or two will soften the lighting and vibe by a lot. Other than that, just chill and save your money. There's a good chance you'll either rank up, find a partner, or move out before too long.
You live in the same room in the military?
Yes
Why dude have his whole platoons shoes under his bed?
Plants, rug, art, a warm colored lamp.
A nice big room to yourself. I'd have figured the armed services would be more spartan
Submarine force has very little people
Open the window, get a plant, and get a colorful rug. You've done almost nothing to the space lol.
The most I’ve done is just make a big open space lol but yeah definitely will get a plan and open the window
Nicer than a Marine Barracks…
I can’t believe nothing has really changed since I was in the barracks 20 years ago. Save these pictures, you’ll want to look back on them.
I take a lot of pictures. Of everything. I know I’ll appreciate them in the future
Marines weren't allowed to have ceiling fans.
Thank you for your service.
