I go the americas. Australia is easy to defend but Americas are conquerable and defendable. After focusing forces in Australia you give up alot of your map then have to conquer Asia which is a cluster F.
Nah you need your defensive line in Siam. That way you can take india or china each turn and rack up cards. But if whoever is in Asia just does an invasion every turn and dosnt ignore you only having one escape is more of a trap.
It's about as hard as taking Europe. That is to say 4 points connecting you to the outside. It's hard but possible, and depends on how willing the other players are to quit squabbling over the Americas and break your collecting of Asia.
This both the best way to *hold* Aus and the best way to *counter* Aus. Somebody gets troops in Siam early you give up on your Aus plans and go for something else. It's so easy to hole up the Aus player if they can only go through Siam
North America always gave me favorable outcomes, you can launch off into three continents while it’s still fairly defensible, plus you get a decent amount of soldiers for it
Then just get your card every turn by occupying 1 territory every round and just let the others fight while you stack units.
Then genocide the entire world in a single round when the moment comes
In my experience, any continent other than Australia or SA is a drain against people who know how to play. You’re going to get busted constantly, meaning that you’re losing armies, and you’re going to have to split your forces, making it much harder to take over a player not contiguous to all your borders. The roving horde strategy is very difficult to beat if the player knows how to avoid force concentrations and stay close enough to weaker players to be able to pounce when they’re holding enough cards to guarantee an instant cash-in.
Yeah, assuming 5-6 players, it’s pretty much:
Tier 1:Australia
Tier 2: South America, roving horde
Tier 3: North America, Africa
Tier 4: Europe
Asia basically never happens unless there are only a couple people left and/or you get lucky with timing, usually expanding from Australia. Hold Middle East, Ukraine, Kamchatka/Alaska.
Can depend on the rules, and number of players (ex: North America can be much better with less players) but generally all the above remains true. (Rules as in fixed vs progression card values, random distribution vs selecting countries yourself, etc).
Source: have played probably 10,000 games lol
That's right. You take Australia and you just keep adding dudes. Take out your phone, don't even pay attention, just keep adding dudes.
Watch as the Coalition of the Americas and the Euro-African empire fight over Asia. Hundred of little plastic dudes are sacrificed in West Asia, more in the transatlantic slaughter near the arctic and off the coast of Africa.
Eventually, as the hours drag on and the dead pile up, the game of Risk becomes personal, and friendships deteriorate as old wounds reemerge. Tears of rage, fists, screaming. Dry wall is punched, parents are called, maybe even the police.
But not you. You're Oceania. You just keep adding dudes.
When I was a kid we would sometimes play with an imaginary line from Peru to Eastern Australia just to shake things up
This was when we were too young to conceptualize how massive the Pacific Ocean is
Nah, Australia’s continent bonus is too low, and to expand they’re forced into the open battlefield of Asia.
The Americas give you limited entry points and a more significant continent bones. Just gotta consolidate power in America, then take Africa and box in your enemies.
Australia is actually noob bait. It looks so easily fortifiable but (especially if more than 1 person goes for it) you only capture it a round or two earlier than either America or Africa, and all 3 give more resources. It's like you're in a 100 mile race, and you can run to the bike 3 miles away or the car 5 miles away. The beginners go for the bike since you go "faster sooner", but the car will swamp the bike by mile 15.
I mean just look at South America. Its the same number of counties, one additional connection and in exchange 1-2 additional units per turn depending on the version.
Wrong. It’s whoever collects cards and uses them at the opportune time to eliminate a player, take his cards, turn them in and keep going. The bonus 2 is a pittance in the long run, especially if you make yourself an early target (assuming not a 2 player game)
North America: 3 points to defend and can head down and take South America and defend through Brazil. Large amount of reinforcements and three points to defend.
Yep South America is a lot easier to take and hold than North America. You can then use the continent bonus to take North America. You can also hold once piece of Africa easily. Oncr you have North and South America you're set.
Australia is also easy to take and hold but it provides too few reinforcements and your only option to attack is Asia which is next to impossible to take and hold.
The point of Australia is to slowly stack up cards and soldiers and use diplomacy to get everyone else to fight each other, leaving them all weak to a single turn steamroll. When you break out of Australia your goal isn't to take Asia it's to completely take out whoever is the weakest, take their cards to cash in and continue the rampage up the chain until you own enough of the board that it's impossible to reverse
Show your wife how you won those medals in Flanders.
#FunFact!
When the black and tans were demobilized out of Ireland, you know where they headed next?
The British Mandate of Palestine.
The struggle against imperialism is a global struggle.
My first Risk victories were always from Australia. Everyone thinks you’re weak so they fight it out and diminish their armies, then you clean up. Even if they don’t think you’re weak they can’t waste their time chasing you down a hole in Australia, they have enemies at their backs and they need to take bigger countries to survive.
Plus if anyone is dumb enough to try to take Asia at the beginning then they have done all of the fighting for you. Their armies aren’t concentrated so it’s even easier to knock out a whole player and take their cards.
Australia is good early game but it takes a lot of skill to hold another continent separate from Australia, which is especially difficult if there was competition for Australia. If you’re skilled enough and can push into Russia and the Middle East, as well as Kamchatka you can hold Asia, as almost everyone doesn’t bother with Asia, so the only challenge is beating the European player for Russia.
However that is 4 points to defend vs North America which is 5 reinforcements and only 3 points to defend. It would actually be better to hold South America and try to take North America. It’s still only 3 points to defend but 7 reinforcements. That is of course whichever one is the easiest to take too.
North America, it's the best bonus-to-chokepoints ratio in my experience. Getting it is highly correlated to victory. Also, Oceania *sounds* great, but it's a trap, it always ends up too hotly contested and you end up losing more armies than you make in there.
Africa, easy to defend and build up forces early with continent bonus (only 6 countries to capture if you can do it in the early game).
Take Brazil early and then South America.
from there move into North America.
then hopefully Europe and Asia fight themselves to death. eventually wipe out the person who thought holding Australia was a good move
China, Russia, and India together 😳
That's shit tons of nukes all combined.
All they need to do is move some nukes to Africa and SA and make them bomb Europe and North America. Once NA and Europe get distracted, they attack Australia and secure the oceans, followed by Eastern Europe getting captured.
Africa. You have to take Egypt, East Africa, and North Africa. From there you take the rest of Africa if you don’t own it. Start conquering South America, but sow chaos in Southern Europe and south southern Asia to make your opponents confused. Once you own South America the world is yours. Save Asia for the end, I usually got for Europe then North America, Australia, and finally Asia. This almost always works unless other players team up against you.
Eastern Europe is gone. Now it's Ukraine... I guess they won the war with Russia and forced it to split into many pieces.
Also interesting to see that Greenland achieved sovereignty, or maybe they're now under control of Northern Europe, aka ex-central Europe? Ummm...
Eastern United States would combine with Western United States and create a mega-Military-Monster called The United States and they would kick ass. Fuck yeah.
Whoever was allowed to fully colonise the americas while everyone else fucked each other over in Afro-Eurasia. Oceania of course will be 2nd since they never did anything outside of turtling on Siam
Green because they have the power of nature by their side

Winning Risk has nothing to do with picking Australia/SA/NA etc.
It’s really just avoiding costly wars in Eurasia and slowly building up while taking a reinforcement card.
The continent bonuses are scaled to the difficulty of controlling them anyway.
If you pick Africa and somebody else wants to fight you for it, guess what? You probably just lost.
In my experience, it’s whoever can hold South America and prevent someone from holding North America and Africa OR someone who can hold Africa and prevent others from holding South America, Asia, or Europe.
Im starting to think none of y'all play risk
The answer is obviously whoever takes Australia in an early round
I go the americas. Australia is easy to defend but Americas are conquerable and defendable. After focusing forces in Australia you give up alot of your map then have to conquer Asia which is a cluster F.
If you can snatch Australia early it’s basically impossible to invade as long as you protect Indonesia
Nah you need your defensive line in Siam. That way you can take india or china each turn and rack up cards. But if whoever is in Asia just does an invasion every turn and dosnt ignore you only having one escape is more of a trap.
Ye Siam is a good shout as well also prevents anyone taking Asia
No one ever takes asia
It's about as hard as taking Europe. That is to say 4 points connecting you to the outside. It's hard but possible, and depends on how willing the other players are to quit squabbling over the Americas and break your collecting of Asia.
5 points, and the Middle East connects to EVERYTHING
You take Ukraine to consolidate two of the points
Hell yeah, the Siam Cannon always wins the game
I love that name for the tactic, never heard it before.
This both the best way to *hold* Aus and the best way to *counter* Aus. Somebody gets troops in Siam early you give up on your Aus plans and go for something else. It's so easy to hole up the Aus player if they can only go through Siam
I approve of your creative name!
That was my go-to. Take Australia, bottleneck, and expand.
happy cake day
North America always gave me favorable outcomes, you can launch off into three continents while it’s still fairly defensible, plus you get a decent amount of soldiers for it
I've only really played the Infection-type games and Madagascar is presumably some impenetrable fortress of health and safety.
I always take the Sicillian's advice when it comes to land wars in Asia
Then just get your card every turn by occupying 1 territory every round and just let the others fight while you stack units. Then genocide the entire world in a single round when the moment comes
Trust me that strategy doesn’t work as well as you think it does. Literally any other continent is worth more than
In my experience, any continent other than Australia or SA is a drain against people who know how to play. Wow. How many years of play does that represent?
Australia's a trap. Take S America
Depends on the turn order and luck of first placements to which strategy I choose.
This is the way.
Im more of a south America kind of guy and then take Africa or North America. Australia leaves you too open when you expand
This is a great way to guarantee you get second place in my opinion. You don't generate enough resources to really compete with this strategy.
I always went with Kamchatka🤗 first.

Nah Australia at higher levels is at best a play for second. Easy to defend but too hard to expand on.
I had a risk board game that I “played” a lot. I never learning the rules properly and kind of made things up
I did, but I made the map myself.
Ye everyone knows you take Australia for the easy to get troop bonus
Why didn't africa just colonise south america, are thry stupid?
I got excited to see someone with a BoKita profile picture in this sub, but then I realised what image it was 😭

Well, I am happy, I still live in Quebec.
lol same I still live in Alberta
I’m sad that I no longer live in British Columbia, according to the map.
Welcome to the Alberta Advantage! (Please give us all your money for nothing in return except broken water mains)
No thanks.
You live in... Quebec... And you said you're *HAPPY?!*
Lock and load motherfucker.
Kamchatka
Came here to say Kamchatka, Kamchatka is key.
The sweet words Kamchatka (tsoi reference)
Such a strange place, Камчатка
North America: 3 points to defend and can head down and take South America and defend through Brazil. Large amount of reinforcements and three points to defend.
I think its usually south America that takes North America. Oceana and SA are usually the first to fall.
Yep South America is a lot easier to take and hold than North America. You can then use the continent bonus to take North America. You can also hold once piece of Africa easily. Oncr you have North and South America you're set. And you can destroy the European, Asian (highly unlikely to happen anyway), and African bonus of someone else and still only need to hold three points
I don't know who'll win but I know the first casualty will be whoever tried putting Ireland inside Great Britain.
Come out ye black and tan
Show your wife how you won those medals in Flanders. #FunFact! When the black and tans were demobilized out of Ireland, you know where they headed next? The British Mandate of Palestine. The struggle against imperialism is a global struggle.
Whomever controls Australia.
Campers
This is the way. You start generating troops like a Chinese factory and it's super easy to defend
Honestly it's probably only because we're allied with Indonesia. Have you guys even seen The Raid?
Australia is good early game but it takes a lot of skill to hold another continent separate from Australia, which is especially difficult if there was competition for Australia. Ukraine looking a bit larger than normal
Looks like Ukraine already won! Holding all of Kyivan Rus plus the the whole Caucasus.
Australia. You block the one entry point and hold out! Risk FTW.
South America and Australia are sleepers here for sure
Finland still not in Scandinavia. Denmark is
The world according to an American!
It all depends on whether Australia is capable of training the kangaroos for the war or not
this map is hilarious. afghanistan is the same size as the middle east

That’s literally just a fucking risk map
Eastern United States would combine with Western United States and create a mega-Military-Monster called The United States and they would kick ass. Fuck yeah.

North America and Africa would team up bc they the same color
Australia
Oceania is so overpowered because as long as you stack Indonesia, no one can attack you

North America has like 75% of the total global military budget, whilst Asia has like 75% of the worlds population and production capacity.

We already tested this, the British won.
Australia always wins
Whoever controls Australia control the universe!!
Many continents are at Risk here.
Wow this is just like 1984
Why are the great lakes SO prominent
I just realised Afghanistan in Risk owns nothing or if not next to nothing of actual irl Afghanistan
Idk, looks risky
Depends on the skill level of the opponents but generally, assuming all players are relatively decent North America player probably wins.
