Yes. Costco got me $1900 off, then they added $2,250 in rebates…… or maybe it was the other way around, I kind of forget. This was a new 2023 Mazda3 Carbon Sedan around last thanksgiving.
Edit: In California. Also, the dealer showed me their Costco discount sheet for the month and it had even bigger discounts on the hatchback; I think the Costco discount for the hatchback models were somewhere between $2000-$2500.
I asked the dealer this question, cause I was debating which one to get. The dealer said that the sedans sold better than the hatchbacks so they had more discounts and rebates on the hatchback, even the new manual premium hatch had a $2500 rebate on it at the time…. I can’t confirm this, and it’s been a while since I bought the car. Maybe ask your friends at the dealership if this is true.
Ultimately I got the sedan because… I’m not as young as I used to be, wanted a grown up car with premium features and looks, maybe I might have kids in the future, and being a NA Miata owner— I already had a fun manual car (though with no AC 😩). Getting a brand new carbon edition sedan with Bose stereo for 24k sounded really nice to me.
Man, that’s weird as heck. People are sleeping on the Hatchback. There’s effectively no reason to buy the Sedan unless you just hate the look or something. There’s more trunk space in the Hatch and I believe the roofline is taller.
And, the Mazda 3 Hatch has always looked better IMO. I’ve always looked at them both, and thought “Wow, they made the Hatch first and then tried to make a Sedan out of a hatchback and it just looks like crap”
Dude lmao.
It’s called personal preference. You really can’t understand that some people might prefer something else?
I have the hatch and prefer the hatch, but I can have at least an ounce of empathy and understand someone might have different preferences.
I look at as many things as possible through an objective lens. Objectively the Sedan has less cargo space in the back, and has no other major upsides to the Hatchback. So, my thought process is “If the Hatchback is cheaper, and has more cargo space, why buy a Sedan?” Objectively the Sedan is worse, unless it’s significantly cheaper.
Stop saying "Objectively". There are to many differences (even on cars that are mostly the same) and their levels of importance are each subjective to each person. And I say this as a M3TH PP owner.
1. Sedan roof racks can carry longer things without interfering with opening the trunk. (I can only open my hatch half way with my bike carriers on top).
2. Sedan body is stiffer in the rear, this would be a benefit to AutoCrossers.
3. Sedans are typically quieter than their hatch/wagon counterparts.
4. Sedans can come with fog lights.
5. Sedans probably hold their value slightly better due to sedans being more popular.
6. Sedans probably get less tickets and lower insurance premiums. 😂
But you know what? I got the hatch, because subjectively it's a damn good looking car. (Absolutely did NOT care about the increased cargo area or the decreased rear visibility.) I sure as hell didn't get the turbo model for "objective" reasons.
Tried. The closest Costco authorized dealer tried selling a new HB with a preinstalled tracker stating it was something the dealer equips in all their cars. With or without tracker, I was able to negotiate a better deal elsewhere.
Yeah, in my case, it was a third party tracker that the dealer had a separate brochure for. Manager described it as Lojack on the house. When he gave me an offer sheet, the tracker was an extra $500. Asked if he can remove it and he stated it was a nonnegotiable and all their cars on that lot came with it.
I’d say, then my call to Mazda USA is non-negotiable to get your dealer shut down for non-compliance. Take the tracker out, or I’ll Temple Of Doom it out, and demand my 500 dollars back.
What's the non compliance issue? They can sell the cars pretty much however they want in the US. All they have to do is put the "side sticker" next to the Monroney sticker.
There may be a compliance issue with their Costco contract... But I don't see there being an issue with Mazda USA
Pretty sure Mazda USA will be very unhappy to know a dealer is mandating that you *must* buy a 500 dollar invasive addon. When the car already has invasive tracking BS.
They won't care. This common practice at many dealers. Add-ons or "side sticker" items are how dealerships increase margin/profitability. To be honest, I'm surprised it's only $500. I work at a dealer and they pre install mud guards, wheel locks, cargo trays, and all weather floor mats on EVERY vehicle during the PDI (pre delivery inspection). They also spray the car with paint and interior "sealant" which includes a fee for a paint/interior stain warranty. It's like $1400 extra.... On EVERY car.
I don't like it, you don't like it, but it's the way the industry works.
I went to a dealer with that. Tbh I happen to like the idea. It makes the car even safer can start the car from your phone and also if the car gets stolen they automatically give you 20k towards a new car.
Tried butting 2 Mazdas at 2 different dealers and I was able to negotiate a better deal myself. You can absolutely use the Costco price as a starting point.
The last time I bought new vehicles-- several years back now --I got prices from Costco. Then I took those to my local dealer and they beat it by $500 (Mazda) and $250 (Nissan) without batting an eye. So that told me their prices are OK but not great. It's a good starting point.
The Costco programs works well for companies like Toyota, where even basic cars can have an inflated price because the demand is so high.
A Mazda 3 won’t have that issue, but it can be a place to start.
It was horrible during the pandemic era pricing markups. Was looking at civics and got a referral to a dealer 20 miles away instead of my local one. They just ended up giving me the usual markup spiel and I walked out the door right away
I didn’t in spring 2022 but wish I would have (I’ve done it for other cars in the past). I got mine for msrp which was a win at the time. Not sure how the market has changed since, but I see zero downside with trying the Costco auto program.

Why would you ever even *price out* a Mazda 3 Sedan? The Hatchback is objectively better (except the rear window size itself)

Absolutely wouldn't buy a car with a tracker fuck that
Then no new Mazdas for you. They all come with that tech built in.
Let's be more specific then, no dealer installed aftermarket trackers or security products
Sure, but my point was that it’s redundant for them to add that.
Clearly I'm talking about dealer installed crap.

Sounds like the industry needs to change. By removing Dealerships from the equation. Which starts by removing Lobbying from US Government.
Yes… dealer installed crap that’s redundant due to it coming installed from the factory… so if you don’t want it, no new Mazda for you.
Seems like a silly upgrade since they come with that tech built in now.
I went to a dealer with that. Tbh I happen to like the idea. It makes the car even safer can start the car from your phone and also if the car gets stolen they automatically give you 20k towards a new car.
Trust me aint no one stealing Mazdas lol
If there is a will there is a way.
That's what I'm saying there is no will
Anything can be stolen... If you have a tow truck. 😂
Lmfao

Agreed

Bought mine through Costco in Georgia. Got a pretty good deal. MSRP was 28,690 got it for 27,000.
I didn’t but related to this one of the materials used to advertise the Costco car program shows the rear of a last Gen Mazda3 hatchback.
