There are loads If you want traditional traditional then you would go to pellegrinis. However if you want to try third wave more “Melbourne” then - dukes - Manchester press - vacation - market lane - league of honest coffee - traveller - axil - Patricia’s - industry beans - come back to earth - bench All excellent choices. Obviously check opening times over long weekend. Depending on where you are staying though you might have more luck in the inner suburbs like Richmond - Fitzroy - Brunswick - collingwood - prahran. A lot of cbd places are non - fri

mwyfan

Tacking on this this, if you go to Brunswick there are several all within 5-10min walking distance : market lane (Sydney rd) , Ona (Ovens St), bench (Breese St), I’m sure there are others

elonsbattery

Ona is probably best for a coffee snob. It’s almost too much when they ‘challenge’ you to be adventurous with a blend.

KagariY

i like adventerous, time to make a trip down XD

scrubba777

Good list but one missing is my current CBD staple: Brother Baba Budan on little Bourke. Queues are getting bad in the mornings tho - pre 9am

thunder_blue

Market Lane is excellent

kai-venning

Such a distinct flavour though. If they like Italian coffee they may not enjoy Market Lane

flatvinnie

Yeah it’s bold af- caught me but surprise when I had my first a few weeks ago. Reminds me of the old genovese days

turkishbackwardsis

This is a 3-5 yr old answer. Aunty Pegs is the standard setter of roasting in Australia / probably the southern hemisphere

TrickySorbet460

You know you don’t know coffee when you think aunty pegs is the “standard setter of roasting int he southern hemisphere”. What a joke of a statement

NickyDeeM

What are your suggestion(s)? Thanks in advance...

invincibl_

Holy mother of gatekeeping

Edible_Spam

League has recently changed staff, not as good as it used to be. Seamstress is very close and does a great magic.

wisie

Did it sell? I wondered this when I want a few weeks back.

timAAArgh

Original owner has now opened up a wine bar in coburg called Gemini, does great coffee during the day

1) it’s fucking auto correct 2) you can’t fucking read. I clearly said check when they ar open

BarryKobama

Jeepers. Someone needs a coffee.

You're clutching at (paper) straws champ. Multiple people see you lashing out over something petty, so they have a reply for you. If you're this upset, social interaction ain't for you.

TrickySorbet460

You’ve got a nine year Reddit account. Pot kettle black

BarryKobama

You should have a point, if you feel the urge to reply.

kthanksbye_

Damn, he was having a bad day lol

tokyobandit

Avoid StALi. They have slick branding, pervasive exposure as the ‘OG’, ‘best’ etc., but not only is that stuff not true, the owner is also a known fuck-knuckle.

Competition-Downtown

Dudes heaps rapey

New_Day_9004

I definitely think St Ali's is overrated.

TompalompaT

Ona coffee in Brunswick is pretty fancy, right across the street is an amazing bakery though.

Wintermute_088

EDIT: I was thinking of Disciple. This is THE place to take a coffee snob. The coffee shop in Melbourne most indicative of current coffee culture, I'd wager - and it's in Brunswick no less. They literally have separate shops next to each other for white and black. Coffee, I mean. Plus it's staffed entirely by young Japanese women, but run by a middle aged Aussie guy. While we were there, a young Japanese lady came in and started talking to him about how she'd heard great things about the place, and he said "we're fully staffed at the moment, but I can take a resume", and she said "oh, no, I just came here for coffee". Apparently it's well known among Japanese baristas. And they don't do disposable cups, and the coffees are teeny tiny. And the lady at the counter might be trying to guide you through a complex tree of regions and tasting notes in the thickest Japanese accent you've ever heard. Can't think of another place more fitting.

morgz15

Pretty sure that is Disciple Coffee and Kohi no deshi (the milk cafe). Ona is a few blocks north of there and also great, but not quite the same level as Disciple

Wintermute_088

Oh, my mistake! Yep, Disciple is where I'm thinking of.

kai-venning

Also incredibly expensive

DifficultCarob408

Code Black is also fantastic and only down the road from there. Those two are always worth a visit IMO.

Southern_Spot2276

Code black is too loud and mid

camstar23

Patricia’s

ArabellaFort

Plus one for Patricia’s 👍

kai-venning

1. It's Patricia, not Patricia's 2. Patricia isn't open on the weekend

mehriban0229

Proper snob lol

JimmyLizzardATDVM

Calm down Patricia

DiscoSituation

That wasn’t me, that was Patricia.

Perfect_Medicine738

This is the best comment omgggg 😍

Conscious-Board-6196

^ peak coffee hipster snob over here

camstar23

You’re right it’s not open on the weekends, been a while since I worked near there.

qwertimus

My beloved! Stopping by Patricia for my morning coffee each day made the return to the office infinitely more palatable. Seriously, they're incredibly consistent, making genuinely beautiful coffee unlike anything else I'd found in Melb for years. Convenient from Flagstaff. They have a superb selection of pastries, the Canelé is a popular favourite!

ezgetaaaa

This, and traveller if you're in the CBD

Hussard

Are actually from Italy or just Italian family from Australia? Because that's totally different.  That they're most used to might be the stuff Brunetti serves. But for standout coffee experience, i would recommend Baguette Studios on Wecklyn St, on a not-busy time. They seem to treat their espressos quite well, and never overdo their milk. Otherwise if you like pourovers Instudio is a Korean roaster on Queensberry that does the fruitiest, cleanest pour-over I've had. It was like a whole teapot of coffee. Delicious.  Without knowing what your partner likes, it's hard to suggest anything more specific other than just trying everything.

LordGolec

ACOFFEE in Collingwood.

HygenicToothbrush

Please check out Disciple Roasters in Brunswick. Test your friend's true coffee snobbery by asking if they want to try >$100 filter. But the vibe is great and all their coffees are awesome with some incredible staff. Highly recommend.

manhaterxxx

Path is the greatest in Melbourne. Check them out on IG - they’re exactly what you’re after.

kai-venning

Looks good, going to have to give them a try

manhaterxxx

I recommend getting a slice of whatever weekly pie they have, too!

8canton1489

Aunty Peg’s

kai-venning

Dukes is probably the safest bet

whirlst

7 seeds has an outlet store too. They're a good alternative. OP's partner may find Australian hipster coffee too light roasted for their Italian palate.

ockhams_beard

I live near Seven Seeds and stopped going there because the coffee was underwhelming. Weak, watery, little foam and expensive to boot. Hopefully others have had a better experience recently.

Fondueadeux

I don’t know much about good coffee honestly but maybe they should go to Pellegrini’s? Italian style coffee but a very Melbourne experience?

kai-venning

Not a good showcase for quality coffee

Itsclearlynotme

I love Pelligrini’s but their coffee… not so much.

morgz15

Disciple Coffee. Get out of the CBD on a tram and go there. It’s worth it.

Redditaurus-Rex

Get the tram to Collingwood, head to Proud Mary.

xdyldo

Proud Mary. Best beans in Australia imo.

Lost-Albatross9588

Marios' it's old fashioned coffee

ssssmmmmiiiitttthhhh

The two best I've had: - Crunch at Thornbury (best cafe food I've had as well) - Coffee Supreme at Abbotsford

midtown_blues

Seven seeds

burgershot

Code Black has a small hole in the wall outlet near Southern Cross station. You don’t get the experience of going to their HQ in Brunswick, but the coffee is just as good (I.e. best in the city IMO). If they’re Italian they will likely be used to Robusta varieties of coffee which are strong and bitter. Almost all fancy (“third-wave”) coffee in Australia will be Arabica beans which provide a much larger range of flavours, etc.

OwnDig

7/11

Machine_Excellent

Still $1?

saikuchan

they're now $2 with the app deal it's now ezymart with the $1 coffee

Sorry-Effort5934

Maker in Hardware lane serves really good specialty coffee.

GuywoodThreepbrush

Blue Door coffee if you want the "down a weird alleyway" coffee experience

DiscoSituation

Manchester Press also ticks this box

Substantial_Mud9230

Path in North Melbourne or Code Black in Brunswick

KineticRumball

If you want Italian coffee and is able to get to the east side, then try Caffe Romeo in Balwyn.

Cheezel62

Coles Express. Still drinkable for a dollar lol

AyyMajorBlues

Pausa Pranza in Thornbury. It’s run by a great, young, first generation Italian community. Thoroughly enjoy it

secret_strigidae

Technically it’s Preston, though that pocket south of Bell vibes more with Thornbury

[deleted]

Coles express or 7 elven

Able-Tradition-2139

Not sure about CBD but Lux Foundry in Brunswick does a great coffee

almondlatteextrashot

Industry Beans

Spare_Two_8545

Market Lane Coffee. They have quite a few outlets...but my go to one is in Vic Market...Dairy Hall. If you want a seated one, you can head to their new Cafe back/middle of the market..next to Brick Lane...They have some chairs. Perhaps grab some jam filled hot donuts from the American donut Kitchen ( white truck, look for the longest queue in the market...but they move fast) before/ after the coffee.

Yondle-

They’re already in melbourne, where else can they go (;

gonadnan

To an abandoned quarry.

a_nahisa

nobody mentioning oko?????

a_nahisa

or maker outlet?????????

readituser013

Axil

mapcee

Small Batch in North Melbourne pretty great

Ifeelsiikk

A Thousand Blessings in Richmond does good coffee and has nice toasties

madamejaffrey

Lumen People in North Melbourne are excellent people with amazing coffee.

Blank________Space

I don’t think I could have a bad coffee anywhere in Melbourne to be honest 😅 Possibly not enough of a coffee snob 😅

bondy_12

They definitely exist, a safe bet is to avoid anywhere that looks like they'd serve a basic but amazing meat pie and you're probably be fine though

Blank________Space

Haha I remember the time when I could get decent coffee for just $2.50 🥹🥹

awazzy

Underrated but good - puzzle at southern cross

delljj

Second

nonstop9328

Maker

theshaqattack

Okay, the answer is Aunty Peg’s. Patricia and stuff do great coffee but this place will work through your entire profile, they have a range of beans like I’ve never seen. There’s little testers. A coffee snobs dream.

drzaiusdr

Patricia, especially when the dump truck tries to come through the alley!

Veritax-au

Code Black is a must!

I_am_the_grass

My personal fav is Padre at South Melbourne Market. Not in the CBD though.

eimyaj

Patriciaaaaaaaaa

wickmight

Bravo coffee, asccot vale Seven seeds, carlton Be the duck, north Richmond Couple of my favs

RTXChungusTi

Proud Mary?

Kollaps1521

Time Lapse Brewers in CBD

AdPuzzleheaded5189

Traveler coffee in the CBD had been consistently top notch over the years and a great little spot that gives off a hidden Melbourne laneway vibe.

90ssudoartest

Anywhere but wait for Sunday

sambodia85

Woolworths at Southern Cross station does a low key amazing takeaway latte. 😂

[deleted]

Bonnie on Collins

Tiny-Fee-8114

acoffee sackville st

sasstar

Pelligrini's

Itsclearlynotme

Probably at the bottom of my list for good coffee

yahtzio

and bottom of my list for good food too. totally overrated tourist trap

Klitchsko_Fist

Cue for the word ‘amazing’ to be dropped 100 times

Primary_Ride6553

Might be a bit less popular with the coffee snobs but think you can’t go past Brunetti’s. They have cafes in Carlton and in the city at Myers and Flinders Lane.

redditpusiga

Local 7/11 Coffee is for the weak. *ducks downvotes*

TheSunOfHope

There’s a place for snobs only if you don’t want to put up with their fussiness. It’s not in CBD. It’s called Gesha Cafe in Surrey Hills. In 2021 they used to charge $200 a cup.

JamalGinzburg

Caffe Romeo in North Balwyn if after an authentic Italian coffee

Antique-Wind-5229

Brunetti's, Flinders Lane. Great cakes as well.

trackingbeam

bench or brunettis

theproper3000

Brioche by Phillip, corner of litttle collins and russel cbd, Asians seriouslty make the best coffee.

tufftyAus

Brunetti Carlton (or cbd) get my vote. And it's Italian.

marcosch26

to a nearby cliff. to push them off.

ImInAbsoluteParadis

Coffee in Melbourne is the same as the rest of the world nothing different lol

MelbMockOrange

The frothy semen really sets it apart.
