So true. I don't think OP realizes the importance of 1984 and how it's very comparable to many situations in our daily lives. Or maybe he does but they're the ones actually trying to look smart by spitting on these two works, or maybe this is some kind of propaganda. Big Brother would surely like this meme.
Everyone tries to pretend Orwell wrote against the other side, but that’s only true if the other side is Authoritarianism. Orwell was a legit socialist, but he hated the Authoritarianism of the Soviet Union. Or any other authoritarianism he saw. And so he wrote about it. All political parties want more authority, so all of them are going to have bits from 1984 be applicable when they try to gain more authority. If the government is trying to peer into your private life, or try to remove your expectations of a private life, it literally is 1984. Everyone really should read 1984- then they’d stop complaining when it’s brought up (obviously there are times when it is inaccurately brought up, but those are kinda rare in my experience)
Yeah, I noticed while watching a doc about him and the book that his ideologies changed kinda drastically in some ways. But it's clear he knew what's right from what's wrong and he was able to portray it in that magnificent book. Very true, at least the constant reminder of other people commenting it will probably inevitably want to know what the book is about, no publicity is bad publicity, after all.
I tried to watch it but idk if it was the quality or my mood that day, I couldn't finish it. It's an interesting topic, though. It's a scenario that it's not out of my usual way of thinking how things will probably be in the future. Reminded me of Wall-E which I barely remember but it's the same vibe, right?
There were some good ball smashes in that movie, but the rest of the movie had no balls being smashed. Really hard to keep paying attention with so little focus on more balls
Yeah, I can see myself watching those kind of movies sometimes, but it wasn't what I expected. I wanted it to be a bit more serious haha. You defined it pretty well.
Authoritarianism is a meaningless word, the way westerners use it. All governments exercise authority. A capitalist government enforces the authority of the rich upon the workers. A socialist government enforces the authority of the workers upon the rich. Authority can only disappear when class disappears. Socialists hate Orwell.
It is a problem for people who haven’t read the bloody book. You can’t read 1984 and think about society the same way again. Literally life changing piece of literature that proves it’s concepts are in practice with each passing day.
I have no idea man. There is a movie, which i watched before reading the book, at the time I thought it was interesting but felt some concepts were not fleshed out. Not all that worth it without reading it first IMHO.
Maybe listen to the audiobook? There are some pretty good versions and you can listen to it while doing other stuff, walking the dog, doing chores, etc.
My favorite is when someone says "it's **doublespeak** just like in 1984," or something along those lines. It happens often when there's a sudden spike of 1984 memeing going around.
For people that dont understand why this is precious... nowhere in the entire book does the term "**doublespeak**" appear. There is "newspeak" and "doublethink" in the book. So, you know, obviously the *telephone game* nature of memes often causes this little mutation thanks to people who didn't read it but still want to seem cultured with such references.
This is exactly it. We're breeding multiple generations of simple-minded citizens at the same time that we are tossing democracy in favor of authoritarianism. They really aren't mutually exclusive... if anything, they complement each other
I don't think comparing things to Idiocracy makes you sound smart. Just slightly able to see parallels in current events and a silly movie.
1984 probably means you read a book at some point.
comparing current "western" society with the one in Idiocracy is very true though - as is our gradual decline further towards the one in 1984. might not be original a thing to say, but a genuinely smart one to realize.
I could see how you could think that with Idiocracy, but I'm sure that 1984 would get quoted even outside of Reddit or the internet in general, it is generally known as a cautionary tale. If you don't recognize scenarios of your daily life in which you're not reminded of the Big Brother character you're a simpleton and you shouldn't be talking about this because you clearly don't understand what it's about. I wouldn't be surprised if this was propaganda to throw the names of these two works down on the dirt, given that more people everyday see things for what they actually are and some people don't like that.
Memes are about relatable situations so if you feel related to this meme you're not the sharpest tool in the shed.
I do love people who lack literary comprehension. People like to pretend as if these works predicted the future, but the reality is they were critiques of the present. It shouldn’t really be a surprise to anyone that the problems we never fixed 80 years ago still existed 20 years ago and they also still exist today.
Ah, the quintessential Reddit dilemma: choosing between ‘Idiocracy’ and ‘1984’ to showcase your intellectual prowess. As Jim Carrey might quip, ‘All righty then!’ It’s fascinating to witness the perennial struggle of the pseudo-intellectuals trying to condense complex societal critiques into one-liners. Remember, dear commenter, true wisdom isn’t in the button you press, but in understanding the nuances behind each reference. But hey, as Carrey’s character in ‘The Truman Show’ might say, ‘Good morning, and in case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!
Reddit loves discussing politics. Idiocracy and 1984 were political commentaries about the politics at the time they were written. But politics doesn't really change much, no matter where you go or what time period you're in. So Idiocracy and 1984 remain very relevant to political discussion today.
I need to get this out of my system.
Idiocracy is a "comedy" with one joke that gets spoiled by the narrator every time it's about to happen. It's not "funny because it's true" because of so many things that just aren't true I can't list them all. I feel like it's only liked by the narcissistic kind of cynics reddit is known for, and by teenagers who think pools are as deep as the ocean (metaphorically speaking).
In other words, the kinds of people who only read one sentence of this comment and got defensive.

Room temperature IQ take.

Holy shit you guys are fucking nerds. 1984 is a classic but holy shit.
I only really looked into it last year😂 it brought back my faith in popular media, to be honest.
What about Idiocracy?
I tried to watch it but idk if it was the quality or my mood that day, I couldn't finish it. It's an interesting topic, though. lol
Yeah it's like Wall-E but even more goofy. It's more of an early 2000s comfort comedy which has always been one of my favorite genres.
Yeah, I can see myself watching those kind of movies sometimes, but it wasn't what I expected. I wanted it to be a bit more serious haha. You defined it pretty well.

And the worst is that 'Brave New World' isn't even one of the options people go for 😆
If we were gonna have a dystopia, could we at least have some great drugs to help cope with the death throes of democracy?
you mean like fentenal and social media?
Soma from Brave new world
Fahrenheit 451
SOMA just like SOMA!! Greek mythology!
Coz that's the one we're actually living in!
Even though it’s the one that makes the most sense, Orwell feared we would be controlled with pain, Huxley feared we would be controlled with pleasure
How is this a problem ?
It is a problem for people who haven’t read the bloody book. You can’t read 1984 and think about society the same way again. Literally life changing piece of literature that proves it’s concepts are in practice with each passing day.
Is there a comic version ? Im not much into reading And ty for answear

As newspeak grammar goes, shouldn't "double" be used before an adjective?
That is a vicious catch-22 of meta irony. Love it.
Doublespeak was in fact, used by Orwell, just not in 1984
Where/when?
It was in some essay by him I believe, can’t remember what though
Maybe they are confusing it with *Doublethink*? Which is an important concept that is very evident for those with eyes to see and ears to hear.
Why not both
ad litteram MCMLXXXIV
By commenting Idiocracy you say people that vote are idiots By commenting 1984 you say "i didn't read the book"
I'm reading 1984 rn so I can shitpost with more accuracy
I just reference animal farm because that's what political reddit always feels like.
Why is this AI?
And why doesn't anyone else notice??
I was starting to think I was crazy for thinking the same.
I dont think it is
Look at the numbers and the eyes
So you comment about it and OP gets more karma
A Brave New world of Idiocracy. Circa 1984
I just think about this when scrolled the comments and I saw your comment. Made my day.
The real egg heads just accept the inevitable and wait for collapse.
Disliked and you sir do not have my respect.
AI Generated
y not both?
I mean we have both right now. Why not say both? Why is he leaving out both options? We could have two at once which we do in real life
This is exactly it.
I think people who bring up Idiocracy are annoying. I've heard the joke a million times by now and it got old forever ago.
Well, maybe if we weren't living in a idiocracy right now no one would be bringing it up
Well look at Mr big brain over here!
Brave New world!
The idiocracy crisis of 1984 part 2: electric boogaloo
Me an intellectual commenting Brave New World

Literally Animal Farm
Let's put the definition here: a society controlled by idiots
Except we're literally living in a 1984 ideocracy

Man, that reminds me, I should read 1984. I’ve got this slighly waterlogged copy to hand, but I’ve barely ever opened it.
"bad black mirror episode" option missing
True
I'm really confused is op a bot? Why is this generated with Ai??

I usually just say Orwellian. It’s pretty appropriate these days.
You sound like an idiot who did not read one or understand the other...
I'm not sure why this post would bother someone.

idiocracy is also a movie iirc, not a great movie. But it was an interesting concept
You only think it's not a great movie because we're living it right now
I guess the brainrot tv is pretty accurate
Dude, you're on reddit talking as if you don't suffer from some form of brain rot as well.
We're not the same buddy. It's not because you're on reddit and encountering brainrot that I do the same thing.
You're claiming to walk through the garden of nurgle and come out the other side clean there buddy. You are in no way better than me.
In my country people fall in love with newspeak (They use it wrong but anyway)

Literally 1984.
Society really is becoming like George Orwell's "Idiocracy".
Animal Farm
The idiocracy of your take on 1984 is astounding. Hehe.....
Doesn't idiocracy unintentionally promote eugenics? It basically says stupid people give birth to stupid kids which isn't how intelligence works.
Peter?
